Do you know people who are constantly wanting to know how bad they can be without having to go see their bishop? Or do you have friends who always do the right things, not because they take pleasure in it, but only because they are supposed to? Brother Bytheway says the best attitude is to want to live the commandments. John tells about some young people he admires who have learned to do just that. In his entertaining yet inspiring way, he compares these faithful young members to some of his heroes from the Book of Mormon. Listening to John Bytheway is like listening to a good friend--someone who doesn't put you down but who helps you see things more clearly. After you've heard what he has to say about attitudes, you may want to change yours--especially about going to church and seminary and doing the right things.
John Bytheway (born October 1962) is an American author and academic, who is well known as a comic motivational speaker for youth within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Born in Salt Lake City, Bytheway attended the University of Utah and Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, receiving a Master's Degree in Religious Education. He also served as a missionary for the LDS Church in the Philippines.
Bytheway is a religious studies instructor at BYU, currently focusing on the Book of Mormon. He also serves on the Aaronic Priesthood/Young Women Writing Committee for the LDS Church. Bytheway and his wife Kimberly have six children.
As I was listening to this it sounded like he was talking as though he was single, before he got married. So this must be one of his much earlier talks. You can tell. It's much more juvenile than some of his other talks that I have listened to.
"How bad can I be?" and "How good are we 'post to be?" "You mean we're 'post to listen to our mothers?"
Mormon 1:15 "And I being 15 years of age...I was visited of the Lord and tasted and knew of the goodness of Jesus." Can you do that at 15, I think you can. It means you need to give up some of your favorite sins. Be valiant. Stand a little taller.
Part of my new Bytheway audio collection, I chose to listen to this talk this week (11/12/08) even though I knew it was run I listened to when I was about 14 or 15 years old. I didn't realize how much of this talk I remembered (various jokes and such). But there was plenty that I did not remember was in it. And as I have over the years made more personal connections with the prophets and characters of the Book of Mormon, the stories he shared meant so much more to me now than they did over 10 years ago.
One thing that I didn't realize, but which I needed a lot recently was his part of talking about "What is pure in heart?" This has been a question much on my mind and trying to apply it to myself. So I very much appreciated his part referring to that. The whole talk is great. I love these talks. So grateful I grew up with some of them--wish I could have had more. Wish I owned more, too!
John Bytheway is by far the most influential and entertaining speaker I have listened to and read. I might not be active in the church, but I still love listening to him & remembering the messages he brings to life.
