Meet Melody Ford, a singer-songwriter, and Tyrell Hampton, her best friend and musical collaborator. For over a decade, they’ve built a life together through music, trust, and deep friendship, carefully avoiding the truth of what’s always been there. When one night finally changes everything, they’re forced to face not only their feelings, but the emotional fear, missteps, and timing that kept them apart.
This Song Is For You is a contemporary Black romance about two people who have loved each other for fifteen years—and only just found the courage to admit it.
Imagine everyone around you can see you’re in love with your best friend of fifteen years, except the two of you. Would you take everyone’s advice and explore the connection? Or ignore the signs to stay in control and avoid jeopardizing the friendship? Those are the choices Ty and Mel wrestle with in This Song Is For You!
This story was absolutely beautiful. Ty and Mel’s bond is instant. You feel the way they show up for each other through the good and the bad 🤏🏾 Their journey of discovering an unwavering love (and pushing past all the “what ifs”) was everything. A true friends-to-lovers with funny banter, real character development, and so much heart.
I think this book is perfect for those who loved the movie, "Brown Sugar" starring Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs. Because just like it was obvious to all except to Syd and Dre that they were into each other, Tyrell and Melody clearly loved each other. No matter who they dated, there were always home to each other.
There were times I grew frustrated with Melody over the course of the book. Really, Tyrell was always up front about how he felt and dropped hints plenty of times that he was feeling Melody. Melody tries to say she and Tyrell dating would take the focus off of their music, but then she goes out a date with a very popular tv star so her excuse not to date Ty seemed silly. Then she says because her mom abandoned her after the death of her father she doesn't want to lose anyone else, but SHE is the one who opened that door when she went on the podcast and said "maybe" instead of "no" to the idea of her and Ty dating, even knowing he was entertaining someone else at the time. She seemed to stir things up and then go into hiding and I was as tired of her games as Ty was by the end of the book.
Although Ty and Melody's issues throughout the story are pretty much their inability to show their feelings, they did have a little hiccup when the girl Ty was messing with before Meldoy said she was pregnant with his baby. Now she ended up not keeping it, but Melody felt betrayed because if Ty said he loved her, why was he sleeping with someone else? The thing is, again, Melody was being a hypocrite. The only reason Ty was even out with Natalie was because she told him it would be a good idea to date other people to take the heat off of them being in a relationship with the public. And then Natalie admits it wasn't even his baby, and that she told him that to make him mad because he hurt her over his obvious feelings for Melody. And how hurt was she really, if she got pregnant by another man in the same timeline as when she was dating Ty? Natasha could go on somewhere with her lying self (lol). I'm glad that she didn't totally derail Melody and Tyrell's relationship.
All in all though, I did really enjoy this book, but it was basically Ty and Melody being difficult for 200 pages when all they really had to do was talk to each other. I'm glad they both not only got their happy ending, but their career as well and that they could be successful together. And I think the author did the spice in this book very well!
3.5 ⭐️Imagine being best friends with someone for years and the chemistry and connection is there. Everybody can see it. Y’all share the same passion for music and have both dealt with grief. The support and love is there, pretty much everything you’d need in a relationship. But you’re too scared to cross that line, so you bury those feelings deep inside.
I loved the MMC. He stood on business and wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, but the FMC stressed me out. 😅 Like girl… let this man love you!
I enjoyed their vibe together. It was cute. Overall, I recommend it if you enjoy slow burns that put you through it a little 🤏🏿😂
This is the kind of story that keeps you wanting more. It's a present day tale of modern love. D. Michelle created characters that are relatable and used language that gave us 20-30 somethings a glimpse into what it looks like when you still believe in love, in spite of. All things considered, I enjoyed the ride. I felt like I was rooting for the characters and even saw myself in the midst of the pages.
I just finished this rom-com and I can honestly say it felt fresh in a way that’s hard to find lately. It’s light, flirtatious, but still grounded in something real. You can feel the affection between the characters from the start, and what I loved most is how their relationship grows so naturally from friendship into something deeper. I wouldn’t even box it strictly as friends to lovers. It leans more into that quiet, almost inevitable kind of connection, like they were always meant to find their way back to each other. And of course, it’s not easy. One person leans in while the other holds back, constantly giving reasons why it shouldn’t work, even when everything between them says otherwise. Some of my favourite moments were from their university days, just watching them meet, connect, and slowly build something without even realising how much it would come to mean. From that first spark to the very end, what never changes is how deeply they understand each other. It’s the kind of story that makes you smile without forcing it, and that quiet, steady connection between them is what stayed with me the most.
This was such a cute debut book! First off the cover is absolutely stunning.
In this we follow our main characters Melody and Tyrell who have know each other since college after meeting at a party. Since their initial meeting they were in each other’s lives daily while trying their best to deny their feelings for one another.
I’m such a sucker for friends to lovers trope and tbh is definitely fits the category for it. There were definitely moments where I wanted them to just get it together and love each other.
The only thing I would change in this book are I wish it was a bit longer just to see more yearning between these characters in their adult years.
Overall a very good debut and this author has a long writing career ahead!
Arc reader here: Honestly friends to lovers is kinda my jam so this book had me at hello.
I love that the characters temperaments were so realistic, it made me feel like Ty and Mel actually my two love bird friends trying to figure out how to move out of the friend zone ! I was rooting for them, frustrated with them, smiling while rolling my eyes at them lol long story short this book came with all the feels ! What a refreshing, heartwarming love story . I loved every single minute of it .
Absolutely beautiful! I could not put it down. I fell in love with the characters and saw so much of Mel in me. Book will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions but hold on tight. It’s worth the ride… wink wink. I took a break from romance but this book reminded me why it’s my favorite genre. Something about a slow burn will always do it for me. The author does justice of highlighting the struggle of being a career woman who still craves romance. A must read for anyone who believed they couldn’t have it all but deserves nothing less.
Melody and Tyrell were frustrating to say the least.. Melanie more so than him. I understood why Melody was hesitant but ma’am at what point is enough, enough. Even the family was like “we were just waiting for y’all to get onboard” LOL. This was a slow burn with yearning and two people pushing through their fears to admit… they have always been each other person from the very beginning.
If you want a story will you are hoping love wins but they must go through the turmoil to get there this is for you the MMC was so intentional with what he wants I still can’t stop thinking about him. This story gives you all the love feels even when they are pushing one another away. 10/10 read and the cover is beautiful
I devoured this book in 1.5 days! Ty and Mel took me on quite an emotional rollercoaster, and I needed to see how their story evolved. The characters felt so real and relatable, and I was fully invested in their journey. The push and pull, the friendship, the love… it all pulled me in and kept me there.
Now let me go get into this playlist! D. Michelle, I’m already waiting for your next book!
I loved this book. Two best friends who have had deep love for each other since college and is just now getting around to how they actually feel about each other after 15 years! This story was beautiful I loved the little drama we had in there and I’m not gonna lie the fmc was very stubborn lol but I can understand it from her past trauma.
I ate this up in less than 24hrs!! Two best friends with over 15yrs of friendship and the mutual love for music finally move from friends to soo much more. I loved the funny banter, slow fire that ignited between them both and how relatable the characters were. I absolutely couldn't put this one down!!
Ty and Melody are best friends who are in love with each other but they also work together. Ty is ready to take their relationship to the next level but Melody is hesitant. Most of the book is spent with Melody in her head and in her own way. The back and forth really was frustrating. This was a new to me author and while this book frustrated me, I look forward to reading another book by her.
Friends to lovers is in my top five tropes. This one was written so well. Melody drove me insane with her antics and all but the chemistry her and Tyrell had was amazing. This is a slow burn but it kept me wrapped in the story the entire time. If you are a hopeless romantic you will definitely enjoy this story.
That is how you come out the gate swinging on a debut! This book was so good I finished this book in about 4 hours total. This is D. Michelle’s first book and she beautifully captures Tyrell and Melody’s friends turned lover’s story with the music to match. Read this book y’all!
