I'm the author of the webcomic Dinosaur Comics (that's the comic where the pictures don't change but the words do, it's better than it sounds and I've also done crazy things like turn Shakespeare into a choose-your-own-path adventure, write a comic for Marvel about a girl with all the powers of a squirrel, or mess up walking my dog so badly it made the news.

Doomquest #1 is a great new direction for the character. The setup is pure Doom ego — Reed Richards gets invited to a prestigious international event, shares his grand plan to travel back through history and fix all of humanity’s wasted centuries, and Doom is so personally offended by the idea of Reed rewriting history in his own image that he decides to do it first. That’s such a perfect Doom motivation. North nails the voice completely — brilliant, imperious, petty in the most magnificent way. Mobili’s art gives it the scale the story demands. Strong start to what looks like a really fun time travel romp with the best rivalry in comics at its center.

Wow, Ryan North shows us a Dr. Doom more dedicated to his people and his ideals, which unfairly don't align with those who call themselves or see themselves as superheroes or the good guys. As they say, every story needs a villain, but thinking about it carefully, who is the truly cruel or villainous one? The one the population labels as a villain, or the one who does good but whose actions are questionable?

I gave this book a try as it seemed "wrong" to not be reading a single Marvel ongoing anymore. I'm really enjoying what Ryan North is doing with the Flash at DC, and I mostly enjoyed his Fantastic Four until a dinosaur arc and getting caught up in a line-wide event.

Now the weird thing about this book is that it's out of continuity whereas I went in thinking this must be a follow up on "One world under Doom", which seems typical of how confusing I find Marvel publishing these days.

Putting that aside though, and we're left with what feels like a timeless Doom story. Arrogant villain who should be brilliant but their ego always ruins any chance at genuine greatness. We want him to fail and it's fun seeing how he does so.
My only real complaint is with the pacing - it already feels like this could be done as an annual sized issue and much of this could have been done in a few pages. The tease for next issue sounds great but it would have been nice to have gotten there already.

The art also has an uncanny timeless quality and could be anywhere from the 60s to the present although the style most often reminds me of 90s Salvador larocca/Carlos Pacheco there are also scenes that reminded me of John Byrne. I don't know if this is intentional because of the time travel theme but it's a nice touch if it is. I thought their depiction of Reed Richards was too old though - he looks like he could be Uncle Ben's bench buddy here.

It's a shame this is out of continuity but maybe that's the reason I actually enjoyed it because it is removed by whatever the current "Marvel style" is. I will be giving the next issue a try. Maybe I should give the Fantastic Four by North another chance too?

Will I read the next issue? yes

Wait for the trade collection? Given it's apparent out-of-continuity status I'm guessing this will work well as a collection - especially if the time-travel gets convoluted which there are hints of already.

Did I need to read previous issues/series? No. Don't worry if you think "oh no, not another installment in the recent One world under Doom saga". This has nothing to do with that storyline (yet?).

Will I read previous issues Technically "not applicable" but when this is by the regular "fantastic four" book, I have to question why I'm not reading it.

No sé si esto es algo paralelo al finiquitado evento de World Under Doom o es algo fuera de continuidad que esté a proporcionar nuevas historias asociadas al personaje de cara el debut cinematográfico en el UCM... Sí, Ryan North entiende al personaje. Tanto que el pensar en una trama de viajes en el tiempo es algo más propicio que cualquier otra propuesta... El juego aquí está en que a priori Victor no aparecerá en estos momentos pasados con su aspecto tiránico y épico, con lo que habrá que ver si realmente esto es el quid de la propuesta o lo que termine de disipar el interés (¿CÓMO QUE 10 ENTREGAS?).

Sí que el cliffhanger es divertídisimo

It was an interesting dive into Doom, but one thing bothers me. Why did Johnny help him, was what I was going to write, but Doom is jumping through time. He will probably jump into Johnny.
