Every scar tells a story. Selene’s screams a warning.
For twenty years, Detective Selene Rowan lived a lie, convinced her weak magic was a defect. But when a brutal force tears through Ravenholt, draining the city’s magical population, the seal beneath her scar fractures. It releases a terrifying power that paints a target on her back.
Ravenholt stands as a powder keg; the match is lit. To survive, Selene must outwit the Highspire elite—a society of marble halls and bloody secrets. Her only guide is Riven Ashborne, a lethal enforcer representing everything she hates.
Untrustworthy and skilled, Riven claims he wants to stop the carnage, but his motives are as dark as his reputation. Bound by a volatile alliance, they investigate a string of magical murders, tracking a killer harvesting power for a catastrophic ritual that could unmake the world.
In a city built on deception, truth strikes as the most lethal weapon of all. Selene discovers her entire life has been preparation for a war she never asked to fight.
PERFECT FOR FANS OF CRESCENT CITY AND KATE DANIELS If you enjoy the high-stakes romantasy of Sarah J. Maas or the gritty, magical action of Ilona Andrews, this character-driven fantasy thriller will pull you straight into the corrupted streets of Ravenholt.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Genre: Contemporary Urban Fantasy / Romantasy / Paranormal Procedural / Magical Murder Mystery Setting: Gritty Urban Landscape / Modern Magical Enterprise Leads: Subverted Chosen One / Lethal Enforcer (Dual Perspectives) Dynamics: Enemies to Reluctant Allies & Lovers / Found Family Themes: Institutional Betrayal / Moral Cost of Power / Redemption / Criminal Investigation Tone: Fast-paced / Character-driven / Romantic
This gave me House of Devils / Crescent City vibes. The plot was solid, and the tension between characters added just enough intrigue to keep the pages turning, & the people are likable! Overall, a good read with a compelling storyline.
This was a first Urban fantasy for me and I have to say I loved it. I loved the characters, the plot, the spice. It was all around perfect and not overwhelming. The FMC and MMC relationship did not disappoint and def enemies to lovers. Loved the FMC’s main partner in crime though, very protective and fierce in his protection of her. It doesn’t end on a cliffhanger which I am ok with, I’ve been reading a lot of those lately and this was a good ending to the first book. I look forward to the next adventure with Selene and Riven! Thank you to the author A.M. Bennett for the advanced copy!

This story was a breath of fresh air for me. I really enjoyed the characters, world building, and Magic. However, that was not the pinnacle for me…
Readers, we have adults who act like adults! They use their frontal cortex! It really was quite nice. So often there are 20yos who act as 40yo saving the world but can’t ask a question. Or I have read 30yo who remind me of high schoolers. Here we have MCs who talk, ask questions, and respect each others wishes (mostly haha.) These MCs have their basic morals and ideologies but are still able to grow, learn, and show understanding.
Also we get a dual POVs that show us tension and romance (with just enough spicy time)without it being constant. “Omg they are so hot all I want to do is jump their bones!” We can focus on the plot.
Which speaking of plot. Great pace and kept me interested and excited for the next book. I need to know what happens next!!!
4.5⭐️ Urban fantasy is not a genre that I typically read, as I tend to like my fantasy books to have a setting as far from reality as possible. In fact, I've rarely found an urban fantasy that I've enjoyed. Brand of Dusk might be the first urban fantasy I've read that I had a hard time putting down!
The story follows Selene, an, at first take, rather ordinary human police detective trying to solve a string of mysterious magical murders alongside her wolf shifting partner Dane and other members of their criminal investigation unit - and it quickly evolves into something far more sinister and supernatural.
The setting immediately made me think of Crescent City (which I've never exactly been a fan of), while the characters' problem solving and high-stakes investigations took me straight back to my days when I used to binge Criminal Minds. Brand of Dusk had all the things I liked about Crescent City but none of the things I disliked (the heavy world-building and overly descriptive details).
There was never a point in this story where I felt even the tiniest bit bored, and that is a rare thing for me to say about a book. The pacing was fantastic. The world-building should have felt extensive, but it was delivered in such a way that I never felt overwhelmed. This book was one revelation after another, one mystery to solve after another, a twist here, a turn there - it was full-speed ahead the whole time, and I loved I never knew what was coming!
The writing is lovely and immersive. The characters are memorable, and a few who were introduced near the end, I can see becoming lovable and a sort of found family for Selene in future books - especially the bickering twins and the giant Goran (who I kept picturing as a muscular, broody Hagrid from Harry Potter!).
I loved the small, heartfelt flashbacks to Selene's childhood with her parents and how the reader began to piece together her true identity alongside her. Though I enjoyed Selene's character for the most part, there were times she frustrated me. As a detective, I felt it should have been her nature to have asked more questions pertaining to the secrets that were uncovered about her life. Yet she repeatedly got herself into hot water which she could have avoided beforehand had she just asked the obvious questions.
And then there's Riven, the MMC, a dark and controlled shadow wielder whom I wanted to love but I never could quite get a grasp on his character. He was almost too controlled and cold. IS he truly a good guy? Is he going to be a villain? What even is he? But perhaps this confusion was intentional.
Selene and Riven's intimate moments were beautiful, though I wish there had been more development between the two of them beforehand. Their romance is an unusual take on the "fated mates" trope that I have not seen done before.
That ending had me scratching my head and wondering where this is all going to go. All in all, I highly enjoyed this action-packed little book. If you love crime solving with a blend of the Crescent City atmosphere, smooth world-building and a storyline that will keep you guessing, this will probably be the book for you.
Thank you to the author and BookSirens for sharing an advanced reader copy of this book with me. This review is my honest opinion, and I'm leaving it voluntarily.
I received an advance copy of this book. This is my honest, voluntary review.
4.5 rounded up.
A harsh and gritty dystopian UK backdrop with a paranormal underground where Law & Order meets an alternate universe. I ate this book up!!
The world-building in this is absolutely top-notch. It’s completely immersive from start to finish. I was hooked on how deeply intertwined the characters and their relationships are as the story unfolds.
The tension and angst keep the pages turning, and that slow burn? 😮💨 Riven and Selene are everything… the chemistry is undeniable 🔥
You’ve got a strong mystery/whodunnit thread woven through magic and action, so there’s really something here for everyone. And while the ending is definitely a cliffhanger, it felt like the perfect stopping point. It was just enough to leave me desperate for the next book without leaving me hanging.
Brand of Dusk by A.M. Bennett was my first urban fantasy read and it definitely made me want to pick up more in the genre.
I really enjoyed the mix of detective work and magic, it kept the story feeling interesting the whole way through and made it such an easy book to sink into.
I loved how varied the characters were, the friendships and the dynamic between the FMC and MMC. She was strong and determined, while he had that protective “carrying the weight of the world” energy. Their connection felt instant, and I really enjoyed the fated mates vibe created through their light and dark magic.
Also, what a cliffhanger! Looking forward to the next book in the series!
I am very lucky to have received this ARC for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received an e-ARC copy of this book from the author.
I loved this one! It really reminded me of Crescent City. It was a perfect modern fantasy mystery. I really enjoyed the characters and the love story too. I also really liked that it didn't end on a huge cliffhanger, and that we got some closure for the main storyline.
As a reader, I am apparently incapable of resisting books filled with dark magic, dangerous secrets, and characters who make choices that have me muttering, "Oh no... don't do that..." as I turn the page faster. Brand of Dusk took that weakness and weaponized it against me. From the beginning, this book has the energy of someone handing you a mysterious glowing artifact and saying, "Don't touch it," right before everything inevitably goes horribly wrong. The world feels dangerous, the stakes never stop climbing, and every time I thought I had a handle on what was happening, the story casually pulled the rug out from under me and asked if I wanted another emotional crisis. What really kept me hooked was the constant feeling that nobody was truly safe. Alliances shift, secrets pile up, and the tension sits in the background like a monster waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Every chapter felt like a countdown to disaster, and naturally, I kept reading because apparently I enjoy stress when it's fictional. The characters are exactly the kind of people I love reading about—complicated, messy, occasionally making decisions that had me yelling at the book, and yet somehow impossible to stop rooting for. Even when I disagreed with them, I understood them, which somehow made their mistakes hurt even more. And can we talk about that atmosphere? The entire book feels drenched in shadows, danger, and the kind of magic that always seems one bad choice away from becoming a catastrophe. The vibe is immaculate. Dark without becoming hopeless. Intense without losing the emotional core. By the end, I was sitting there staring into space, trying to process everything while simultaneously wondering how soon I could get my hands on the next book. If your favorite fantasy experiences involve dark magic, questionable decisions, mounting dread, emotional damage, and a complete inability to stop turning pages despite knowing your feelings are about to be personally attacked, Brand of Dusk deserves a spot on your reading list. This book grabbed me by the collar, dragged me through the shadows, emotionally bullied me for several hundred pages, and somehow convinced me to thank it afterward.
“I have spent over twenty years waiting to die,” he whispered. “I thought I had nothing left to lose. I thought I was just a weapon waiting to be broken.” … “But now… I am terrified.” “Why?” I whispered. “Because now I have a reason to stay.”
Thank you very much for the author A.M. Bennett for sending an early copy.
Wow! Someone please make a movie out of this book!
It wasn’t my usual read but I loved it soooo much! The book is a perfect combination of sci-fi and fantasy with detective book elements. Like CSI and Criminal Minds but with wolf shifters and magic. It was perfectly balanced and action driven. A.M. Bennett created cinematic experience just with written words. My jaw was on the floor with the rich world building and all the actions happening in the book.
The magic was raw and powerful, the characters felt like real people with real reactions. The side characters were amazing, the good ones, the bad ones, they all felt so real and made this book easily enjoyable. There were banter, tension, magic, detective work and so much action. I loved every chapter of this book! The last 20% was pure adrenaline. I was turning the pages and my heart was beating so fast I wasn’t sure I will survive the end.
Dane, Selene’s partner and best friend was my favourite side character. He supported her at every step of the way and I loved him a lot!
I love strong female leads and Selene was exactly that. Fierce, unstoppable and unyielding. She learned to control her magic which she never knew existed and I rooted for her the entire time.
The MMC Riven reminded me so much of Rhysand. He is a shadow-wielder (insta approval) with a tortured soul and body. He was strong, protective and savage. The perfect combination of you ask me… I loved him and Selene together. Their connection was everything I wanted to see in a fantasy book❤️
I just loved this book and can’t wait for the story to continue!
I would first like to thank A.M. Bennett for selecting me to be an ARC reader and reviewer for their book Brand of Dusk.
Wow. That was unbelievable!! 🤯
4.5/5 star ⭐
It was amazing!! It had me hooked from the beginning! Especially because I’d read ‘the copper rain’ its prequel novella.
There was dark intrigue, murder and mystery. Not forgetting the magic! And the lore of the story isn’t one I’ve come across before making it even more enjoyable, as I didn’t know what to expect as it went on.
I enjoyed how real life jobs (detective’s) were incorporated into the world of magic making this one of the better urban fantasy books I’ve read.
I loved the characters together! The tension, and the subtle yearn made it romantic without it being romantic. I could not get enough of them.
The ending tore me up and now I cannot wait to see where book 2 takes us! Because I NEED to know what comes next!
The world was beautifully crafted - murky, frightening and dirty, a city run by wealthy crooks in impeccable suits, sat in glass offices, looking down at the people scrabbling below them.
This is essentially a gritty crime drama, where the police try to bring down the bad guys, but it is so much more…
Add magic, but not the fluffy cute kind, the earth shattering, destroy the world kind.
Add corrupt officers and red tape, to frustrate and entangle the good guys into uselessness.
Add illegal magical human experimentation, creating monsters from already dangerous people.
Add a love interest that is so full of yearning and hot as hell.
And finally, add a hidden magical legacy buried so deep for so long that it may not be discovered in time to save the world…
It was heavy, sobering, hot and devastating. I was here for it all!
Brand of Dusk by A. M. Bennett completely surprised me in the best way — my first urban fantasy mixed with crime-solving detectives, and I was hooked. It blends mystery, magic, and romance so seamlessly.
You truly get a little bit of everything here: enemies to lovers, protective partners, banter, tension, magic, worldbuilding, and a plot that keeps you invested the whole way through. But what stood out most to me was the character growth and depth — every relationship felt meaningful.
I also loved how much story was packed into under 400 pages. Nothing felt rushed, but every chapter moved the story forward in a way that kept me fully engaged.
Overall, such a fun and immersive read with incredible character depth, strong world building, and the perfect mix of crime and tension.
I received an ARC of this book, and remembered why I am a total sucker for urban fantasy - it definitely delivered. This was a 4.5/5 read for me. It did start a bit slow, but once the story started unfolding, I couldn’t stop reading.I liked the magic world but even more how everything was introduced and slowly explained throughout the book. Piece by piece, things started clicking into place and making more sense and that totally kept me on my toes. Selene and Riven’s relationship was another highlight for me. I liked seeing how it developed, and the dual POV made the story so much better. Dane is the kind of friend I’d want in my life — fierce, loyal, zero judgement. Brand of Dusk feels like a really strong start to the series, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Brand of Dusk completely wrecked my ability to do anything productive because every time I thought I’d read “just one more chapter,” something happened that made it impossible to stop. The tension in this book feels constant in the best way—like everything is balancing on the edge of disaster the entire time.
I especially loved how heavy the emotions felt without losing the darker fantasy atmosphere. Selene and Riven’s connection was done in a unique way (without giving anything away) and kept me wanting for more and more as I read through.
There’s also something really cinematic about A.M. Bennett’s writing. Certain scenes felt so vivid I could picture them perfectly, and a few moments genuinely made me stop reading for a second just to process what happened. Definitely one of those books that sinks its claws into you and refuses to let go. It sets up perfectly for the next book and I cannot WAIT for it to come out!! Thank you to A.M. Bennett for allowing me to read and review this beauty, you’ve definitely gained me as a fan of your work!!
I’m not normally an urban fantasy fan. I love this book. The prequels were more than enough to grab my interest and I haven’t been so excited for a book release in a long time. The book definitely lives up to expectations. The characters and the whole city are expertly brought to life, complete with all too believable bureaucracy and corruption.
The only real complaint I have is the story has very strong “chosen one” vibes with incredible power just suddenly revealed. Might be my least favorite trope in fantasy. Don’t let that deter you though, Selene and Riven feel _real_ at a level I wouldn’t expect from a new author. If this is what she can do on her debut novel, I’m excited to see how much better she gets as the series progresses. Book 2 is already a must-buy.
To say this story was riveting is putting it mildly. This story had me all over the emotional roller coaster. Selene.. oof. I feel for her so much. She truly struggled with her own self worth and identity for so long. It was almost cathartic to see her come into own. And i love that it didnt feel rushed or fake. The plot was there and in depth but not so much as to be dragging on. The spice, while there, was not all there was to the story. The character development was sound and logical and just truly great. If you like Urban Fantasy and world building and myths and legends. This book is for you! And dont pass up on reading the prequel novella Copper Rain.
If you like the world building of Crescent City and the Plot in the House of Devils series then this new series is for you! I think the only reason I made it 3.5 stars was because some of it felt like it had been done before and was similar to other series’s. I will say the authors writing style was amazing and I loved how she pieced sentences/paragraphs together, it flowed so well. I just had a hard time connecting with the main characters of this book but I do think I’ll continue the series as the rest comes out!
This book was great! I really enjoyed the pacing and I am grateful I read “Copper Rain” before this to get an understanding of the different magics, species, and characters before beginning the main story. I especially enjoyed that the characters felt rounded and not one-dimensional. There was tension, suspense, happy moments, mystery, and delicious spice. There was a cliffhanger, but the story playing out directly in this book definitely felt wrapped up nicely and the super pressing issues were resolved and questions were answered! I am super excited for book 2!! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
ARC review :) From the first chapter this book kept me guessing. I loved the mix of romantasy, urban dystopian and magic in this book and when you learn the history of why the magic is the way it is *mind blown* loved the way it all circled back. Our mmc is a shadow daddy and while that has been a very well used trope, this shadow daddy actually has a purpose and I love how he and our fmc’s relationship evolves. A great read if your looking for something a little different in your romantasy tbr :D
I absolutely loved this book. Urban fantasy at its best. I had read the prequel a few weeks before this that delved into the backstory a tiny bit, just enough to get you hooked to read the main story. The dynamic between Selene and Rivan is great. The magic system is unique. The overall story ended on a cliffhanger so I’m very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series! I highly recommend.

Went into this one a bit unsure but ended up pleasantly surprised. A fun, entertaining read with solid world building and character development. Modern world meets high fantasy with a nice, unique twist. A solid 4.5 ⭐️
I completely missed the transition from a police investigation to a full blown page turner.
Riven and Selene captivated me. The authors descriptions painted vivid pictures of light and dark, drawing me into their world and their historical story. The relationship is so intense, with plenty of emotional pulls.
The settings were easy to visualise, and I really enjoyed the constant rain.
This first book establishes a strong foundation for a series.
While I’ve never read House of Devils or Crescent City I’ve seen those comparisons in another review and wanted to add for fans of those series.
I have been hooked on Urban Fantasy lately, don’t get me wrong I’m a fantasy girl through and through but there is something so familiar when the world isn’t a far leap to our own.. I mean when you take out magic and shifters (although maybe I am just a regular human and don’t see the supernatural world - a girl can hope right)
The tension and slow burn between our FMC and MMC and the chemistry between Selene and Riven was perfect! This book really felt like high-stakes (I mean people were dying and bodies were showing up drained - what is more high stakes than that)
This is perfect for fans of Criminal Minds but wish they sprinkled in some fantasy. I definitely can’t wait for more
Brand of Dusk completely caught me off guard in the best possible way. I went into this expecting a fun urban fantasy, and instead I got an action-packed, emotionally layered, addictive story that blended magic, murder investigations, paranormal politics, and slow-burn romance so seamlessly that I genuinely could not put it down.
The easiest way to describe the vibe is Criminal Minds meets fantasy noir with magic, wolf shifters, shadow wielders, and a dystopian atmosphere that somehow feels both gritty and cinematic at the same time. Every chapter pulled me deeper into the mystery, and once the twists started unfolding, I was absolutely hooked.
One of the strongest parts of this book was the pacing. There was always something happening, but it never felt overwhelming. The worldbuilding was rich and immersive without drowning the reader in information dumps, which made it incredibly easy to settle into the story. I loved learning about the different magical beings, the politics, the investigations, and Selene’s growing connection to powers she never knew she possessed.
Selene was such a strong FMC. Fierce, stubborn, capable, and determined, but still emotionally vulnerable in ways that made her feel incredibly real. Watching her slowly uncover the truth about herself while navigating a world that suddenly became far bigger and more dangerous than she ever imagined was so satisfying to read. I rooted for her constantly.
And then there’s Riven. Broody shadow wielder? Emotionally tortured? Morally gray and terrifyingly competent? Yeah, I was done for immediately. I loved that their relationship actually had tension and emotional buildup instead of instantly revolving around attraction alone. Their chemistry simmered through every interaction, and the romance balanced perfectly with the plot instead of overtaking it.
Honestly though, Dane deserves his own special mention because I adored him. Protective best friend and loyal partner dynamics will always get me, and his relationship with Selene added so much heart to the story. The side characters overall were fantastic and already felt like the beginnings of an amazing found family.
The action scenes were also incredible. The final stretch of this book had my heart racing because the stakes just kept escalating, reveal after reveal hitting one after another. I loved how cinematic everything felt, like I could perfectly picture every fight, every magical confrontation, and every emotionally charged moment.
What surprised me most, though, was how mature the characters felt. Everyone communicated like actual adults, made understandable decisions, and had emotional reactions that felt grounded and believable. It made the relationships and conflicts so much stronger.
By the end, I was completely obsessed with this world and already desperate for the next book. If you love urban fantasy with strong worldbuilding, detective mystery elements, slow-burn romance, magical conspiracies, and dangerously compelling shadow-wielding MMCs, absolutely put this on your radar.
Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Brand of Dusk is an urban fantasy that leans heavily into hidden magic, political corruption, and a personal awakening that turns the protagonist into the center of a much larger conflict. At its core, it follows Selene Rowan as she uncovers a buried truth about her own power while a city called Ravenholt begins to unravel under a mysterious magical drain.
The strongest part of the novel is its worldbuilding. Ravenholt feels layered and volatile, with a clear divide between ordinary citizens, magical elites, and those caught in between. The Highspire society, with its polished surface and underlying brutality, adds a strong sense of tension and political unease. The magical system tied to Selene’s scar and the draining of magic across the city gives the story a compelling central mystery that drives the plot forward.
Selene herself works well as a grounded entry point into this world. Her discovery that her “weak” magic was never a flaw but something far more dangerous adds emotional weight and stakes to her journey. Her growth from someone living under a false understanding of herself into someone forced to confront her true nature is one of the more engaging arcs in the book.
The ensemble cast and Selene’s fellow officers also help stabilize the story. Their interactions bring a sense of camaraderie and realism to an otherwise chaotic situation, and those quieter moments of shared frustration, fear, and determination help balance the larger magical conflict.
Riven Ashborne, however, is a more divisive presence. While his role as a morally gray enforcer is meant to add tension and unpredictability, his dynamic with Selene often leans too quickly into romance. The relationship development can feel abrupt and underexplored, which weakens some of the emotional credibility between them. Instead of a slow build rooted in trust or shared experience, the connection sometimes feels forced into place, pulling attention away from the stronger mystery and action elements.
The central plot—tracking a killer harvesting magic for a world-ending ritual—remains engaging throughout, with strong stakes and a sense of escalating danger. The idea that Selene’s entire life has unknowingly prepared her for this conflict adds weight to the narrative and helps tie her personal arc into the larger story.
Brand of Dusk follows Detective Selene Rowan as she uncovers corruption, hunts a killer terrorizing her city and fights to reclaim her identity. Poor Selene is perpetually going through it, from her partner/bff Dane, being severely injured and needing a temporary new partner (insert Riven) to her constantly getting some life changing revelation about her past. If you have mommy/daddy issues and want to cry, this is the book for you!
Bennett’s writing style is descriptive and fast paced. It's character driven with a high impact narrative with a unique magic system. The world feels immersive and is full of tense moments painted against a dark, gritty noir landscape. It’s a testament to the writing how quickly I got attached to characters after only spending one chapter with them. When her heart dropped, so did mine. When her breath hitched, mine did too. Even the description of Selene’s apartment told me more about her and served as more than just a room for a scene to take place in.
Like its prequel novella, Copper Rain, this story begins with a murder, which forces Selene into a shaky alliance with Riven, a lethal enforcer hiding his fair share of secrets and trauma from her. They may be enemies but the star-crossed lovers' chemistry is obvious and they’re incredibly buzzy from the start. That feeling of knowing when someone enters a room without having to look? They have that. Literal sparks are flying! No notes carry on.
Selene has a commitment to these victims before it becomes personal for her and she won’t stop even if it means confronting own family and force. She is the key to the primary mystery though there’s a bit of a power creep. It's necessary for the plot to progress at the pace it does and explained but still feels worth mentioning.
On one hand, I’m excited to have discovered such a talented author so early in their writing career but I’m equally devastated because it means I have to WAIT to read more. Devastating! Book 1 also ends on a cliffhanger. The wait is now doubly devastating. I've rounded up my rating since Goodreads uses whole numbers and I’m eagerly anticipating the next installment!
Thank you to the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion :)
Rating: 🐧🐧🐧🐧.5/5 Quick Reasons: I almost thought I was going to have to be real mad at this book for a minute; fast paced, breakneck rush to the finish; unique world building, intriguing magic system
Huge thanks once again to A.M. Bennett for the ARC copy! This review is voluntarily written and in no way altered by this gesture.
The hush that followed was crushing. We were all just debris, I realised. Fragments of a magic that didn’t belong in this world, washing up on this shore, trying to pretend we were people.
There is a quiet sort of purple prose to this read that ensnared me from the beginning, a begging to race breakneck to the ending just to figure out where the start began. The characters are vibrant and fleshed out, breathing in reader's ears with every flip of the page, painting themselves into every shadow. Every time I read a book with cop or detective characters (which is not often, I'll admit), I find the read soul- shuffling and entirely worth the broken pieces. This dark, gritty fantasy noir pulls on the heartstrings and leaves you desperately seeking more-- which means I'm now standing here, forlorn, impatiently awaiting the next book.
The world building is gritty and believable. I found myself able to shuffle right into the middle of the action, practically living through the characters. This is a brutal, fast paced read filled with mystery, mayhem, magic, mutiny, and murder... among other themes that may or may not also start with the letter M. For a book that plays with "dark" and "light" magic, this is done in a unique and enthralling way that kept me on my toes throughout.
“History is written by the ones with the power,” Riven said, stepping away from the periphery of the room. “The microphone is simply a tool they purchased.”
I highly recommend this read to lovers of magical noir, star-crossed but fated loves, and whirlwind fantasy reads. The Eclipse is dawning and the portal has cracked, Penguins; how far will you go to save the world?
Brand of Dusk is an urban fantasy with a mix between Criminal Mind and Crescent City vibes - which for me was really refreshing, because we got the fantasy, but we also follow good old police work and the bureaucracy that follows.
In this book I got my world building and depth, which I was hoping to get, after having read the prequel novella The Copper Rain. And FYI: The characters are in their late 20'es and start 30's and acts like that, which was nice!
Plot We’re following the detectives Selene and Dane as they investigate the murders of Calystari women who’ve been completely drained of their magic. The Highspire Elite are powerful people, sitting on wealth, influence, and even controlling parts of the police departments. As Selene follows the trail of leads and bodies, everything begins pointing back to them. She’s forced to work with the consultant Riven Ashborne - a dangerous shadow-wielder, but also the Highspire’s pet. Riven claims he wants to stop the carnage, but Selene doesn’t trust him. As the case unfolds, Selene begins uncovering long-buried secrets and slowly learns unsettling truths about herself and her own origins. To avoid the coming war building in the shadows of Highspire, she ends up forming a reluctant alliance with Riven.
Themes Dynamics: Enemies to Reluctant Allies / Found Family Themes: Institutional Betrayal / Moral Cost of Power / Redemption Tone: Fast-paced / Character-driven / Romantic
Normally, I’m not the biggest fan of urban fantasy, but A.M. Bennett did an amazing job here. So overall, this was such a refreshing urban fantasy read, and I already need the next book. If you enjoy fantasy mixed with murder investigations, political corruption, reluctant alliances, and morally grey characters, I’d absolutely recommend giving this one a chance.
This was great, a mix of police procedural, CSI and a gritty, urban, paranormal vibe. In Ravenholt, the city where this is set is there is a mix of humans and the supernatural, but these arent your usual urban paranormal species, except the wolf shifters. No vampires, witches, Fae or pixies. Here we have 3 magical races, the empaths who manipulate emotions, the shifters and the shadow weavers.
Selene Rowan is a 28 year old cop investigating a series of murders of drained magic users. She is half human and her magic is weak, but the scar on her shoulder has been playing up for days and her investigation keeps running into red tape and officialdom. Someone is blocking her efforts to bring the killer to justice. And when she and her partner and best friend, wolf shifter Dane follow a lead, both are injured badly.
Taken off the case she is partnered with a new investigator, Riven Ashcroft, a chilly and forbidding Enforcer, working for Highspire, the powerful elite of Ravenholt. But Selene is determined to keep digging and what she uncovers will shatter her view of herself, her magic, her parents and and threaten everyone she loves.
I find urban fantasy and bit hit and miss sometimes, the protagonists are often rather juvenile and they can get a bit samey. But this was so well done, with interesting lore, magic. With adult characters not kids.with a dark gritty feel, corrupt police, secrets, mysteries, danger.
I felt this cleverly combined high fantasy elements like powerful magic, hidden chosen ones, self sacrifice, fated mates and saving the world, with a twist, by setting it in an urban environment with modern technology likes phones and computers. With a strong cast of supporting characters, found family and a burgeoning relationship and bond with Riven, it all sets us up nicely for book 2.
Let me say, as someone who has NEVER read Urban Fantasy before, this is one of my favorite books!!!!
I am leaving an honest review from the advance readers copy I received.
Concealed Identity Shadow & Light magic Forbidden magic Enemies to Lovers Sassy side character you meet later on Shifters Empaths Action packed Murder Mystery
Brand of Dusk grabs you and THROWS you in to the world. Everyone is written very memorably. You can read each person as a living, breathing being. Not just fake people on a page. The world is vibrant and living. It changes and gets effected by the event around it.
My favorite character? EASILY Torvin. He's so witty and I'd love him lol
We start off the bat with a brutal murder. Then the real story starts. Selene is this detective who knows something is really wrong. Everyone tells her to drop it, even her former detectice father. But of course she refuses to give up. She keeps pushing, and when Dane gets seriously hurt, they try to keep her on a leash. Selene gets assigned a partner/"babysitter" once she sniffs to close. And from here, we finally get to meet Riven Ashborne.
Riven has a secret. He's playing his cards well. Keeping his bosses thinking he's their lap dog, but really he plots their downfall. It's super refreshing to see a MMC who doesn't already know EVERYTHING and learns alongside the MFC.
If you have wanted to try branching out to Urban Fantasy, Brand of Dusk is THE way to go! I was fortunate to receive a version of the prequel as well, because I am NOT ready to leave this world. Copper Rain *hopefully I didn't get that wrong* will be exciting! I can not wait to see what will happen and if we get to see any familiar faces.
