Abounding Secrets
Emmaline Whittier has led a privileged life since birth, but now that her beloved Colonies are in danger, she has made the choice to lose everything if she must to protect her homeland. With the help of a group of dedicated fellow spies, she gathers information from the British officers and passes it along to Dr. Joseph Warren. You know those stories that reach you just when you need them most. Well, Abounding Secrets is one of those timely stories. I so needed the messages secreted within its pages. Ones of Letting my Heavenly Father lead. Of trusting and placing my hope in Him, not the outcome. Knowing that He always knows best for me comes what may. I can trust His plan.
This is one thick book which I loved because there was more to read, obviously 🤭😉😍. The spies, the intrigue... what can I say? This book was so captivating, and there were so many moments when my heart was racing, fearing for the characters' very lives.
Peter is honestly so sweet, and I love his sincere faith. He doesn't have all the answers, but he tries his utmost best to trust in His Lord. He tries to help everyone around him to become the best version of themselves.
Emmaline is amazing, courageous, and all together a lovely heroine, and I can well see why nearly everyone adored her. I felt for her, so with what happened to her near the end, Peter was right that God is the one on whom our dependence and purpose should lie.
The romance was sweet and chaste. I loved how clueless they were of each other's feelings.
As to favorite scenes, I think I shall giggle every time I think of the line, "so blue."

And the lineup of side characters! There was barely one I could dislike. Even Henry. They were just so personable.
I can also see the incredible amount of research that must have gone into this novel and commend the author for a historical tale well-told 🇺🇸🎇. Historical Easter eggs are my favorite, and the colonial time period has fascinated me for a long while. I think she portrayed Warren quite well. Coupled with my introduction to him in though another fictional novel, I think I've gotten a fuller glimpse of the man, and despite even some of his faults understand and like him all the more (though Manoah needs to stop 🤨).
Though the ending perhaps did not come about in a way that I expected, I think it fit the story well.
CW: the British euphemisms bl--dy (I lost track of how many, but it had to be at least 1/2 dozen), broken leg, kidnapping, blood, torture, Ale (portrayed negatively 👍🏻), one firey touch, looking at lips, mention of never giving anyone "benefits" (very chaste mention of word, nothing more said on the subject)

So gripping... but ending it on a cliffhanger (I have my suspicions who it might be 👀)). Now, I am dying for the next book... but will have to await it.

5 stars. As a Canadian, I'm a loyalist. But I've certainly read plenty—and continue to read plenty—of books about the American Revolution. This one particularly intrigued me, being by a dual Canadian-American citizen. I was not disappointed by how she approached the war. She did such a great job presenting everyone as real and human—no side overly perfect, no side overly monstrous—while still keeping true to reality/what happened. I think the (absolutely gorgeous) cover sums up the book: both intense and deep. Of course I enjoyed the whole espionage aspect, and the story certainly had me on the edge of my seat; but I also enjoyed the quieter moments, with all the spiritual discussions and lessons, the gentle love and deep respect everyone evinced. The romance was so sweet, and the characters so amazing (Peter, of course, just proving the rule that fictional Peters are lovely); besides, the writing sank me completely into the era—and I loved the way the author highlighted the fine side of Boston... something you don't often see in books like this. Overall, this is the highly satisfactory start to a very promising series and I can't wait to know what happens next!

Sara is an incredible writer! This story drew me in from the start, and every minute away from it between starting and finishing was agony.
Emma and Peter are an adorable couple, and I loved the realistic but relatively low tension relationship. It’s a breath of fresh air after the stressed relationships seen in so many books.
The history, mystery, and mayhem was impeccable. The way the tension ratcheted up gradually made the climax feel like the inevitable, rushing toward what might end in hope or despair. And I must say the ending was highly satisfactory. . . but I neeeeeed book two regardless.
I’m guilty once more of choosing side characters as favorites, and am of the firm opinion that Nathan, Henry, and Tacy deserve their own books. 😂
The faith element was mixed in so well. Emma’s growth, especially, was touching, and Peter and Tacy’s faith was so sweet!
*I’ll come back and add content warnings later, as I’m nearly falling asleep while writing this. 😂 I would be comfortable handing this to a teen. 😉

True to its name Abounding Secrets ushers readers into a historical world of espionage within colonies on the brink of war.
From the very start a tone of mystery and who can you trust was set. It added a slight suspense thrill throughout the whole story.
I felt the setting was well done found all the talks of different codes very interesting.
I loved the characters and their relationships. Peter and Emmaline both felt authentically driven yet imperfect.
That end surprised me a bit and circled back to the intrigue I felt at the beginning leaving questions that make me want more.
