Even with its very welcome cast page, it can be hard to juggle what the heck is each character’s deal between volumes of this manga. I do feel that the effort is, in fact, worth it though.
Partly because some of these plots work quite well. Yuri and Tsumu’s sister issues have been bubbling along for ages and Yuri really lets it all hang out this time. In fact, she unleashes her frustrations brutally enough to cause Tsumu to have another asthma attack.
It’s not hard to see Yuri’s point - she feels that she’s given up everything for Tsumu and gotten nothing back and that has built up to become pure resentment. Still, that’s her sister and not much feels worse than knowing your words are like daggers and wielding them anyway.
There’s also the ongoing drama of Aria’s brother attempting to fix the competition to his own desires. I really liked that his obvious villainy is just that, obvious, which takes things down some interesting paths.
Having so many characters does mean that you get lots of smaller moments, like Koyuki’s big showdown with her parents. It’s wild that she’s almost too old for the industry at 21, but that’s idol life for you. Little bits like that help flesh out a lot of the core cast.
Of course the biggest part of this volume is the latest showdown between Team Light Star and Team Dark Star. It’s mercifully easy to follow, even with the explanation lying mostly in the previous volume for the various positions.
And the showdowns are engaging, albeit not on the level of something like, say, Wandance. I mean, the volume ends on a predictable spot, but considering that this is a reality tv competition it’s one you could argue was inevitable (to say nothing of the composition of that final round).
In yet another good move, these matchups are well realized, utilizing character traits and developments we’ve seen, plus some we haven’t, to make for a very brisk and exciting read. There are some very manga-esque ‘a-ha’ twists that really work.
Yes, I still think that Girl Crush is better than this on any given day and I’ll likely remind everybody of that each time. But this is no slouch and there’s no reason to choose between them if you don’t have to - they both have merit.
4 stars - nothing like seeing a bunch of young women trying to claw their way to the top by going over one another to bring out the drama, basically. Good stuff.
