Today is the most important day of my life. They call me in for an interview. Twenty applicants, so I am told, and I’m one of them. I would do whatever it takes to get hired. I need the money, and it's about time I finally got a job. But as I step into the elevator, and the doors close behind me, the lights go out and I'm trapped with a total stranger. Turns out he isn't just a stranger. Turns out that guy is about to change my life.
Authors' Note: THAT GUY is a free, sexy prequel novella to the full-length novel AN INDECENT PROPOSAL, that will be released on February 23rd. Read it here for free first. THAT GUY will also be included in the full-length novel.
Familiar trope of the heroine, Lauren, and the hero, Mr. I'm So Damn Hot and Mysterious, I Don't Even Tell You My Name Even Though I'm Supposed to Be Trying to Calm You Down, Though If My Name Just Coincidentally Happened To Be Ted Bundy (Which It Isn't), It Probably Wouldn't Help, So Maybe That's a Good Thing After All, And This Right Here Is Why I Should Tell Tell Chicks My Name Because Look How Long This Pseudonym Is, getting stuck together when their elevator breaks down.
Neither has access to a cell phone, which right there, puts this book into the Are Ya Shittin' Me Category because I think most people have a spare phone embedded in their anal canal in case they get stuck in an elevator during an earthquake.
Lauren's there for a job interview at LiveInvent which is located in Los Angeles in a very high-end building in which she must take the elevator to the 30th floor.
So, lessee...this is in Los Angeles, where earthquakes go for Spring Break to drink too much tequila, lose their panties, and sleep with some rando named Raul (No? Just me? Uh, moving on...), so you'd expect said high-end building to meet some pretty strict seismic code. Well, except for the elevator which was apparently built in some third-world country using a Ron Popeil Spray-on Hair and Build Your Own Elevator Kit (two payments of $9.99 plus shipping and handling) because during aforementioned earthquake, the elevator breaks down, and no emergency lights come on, nor are Lauren and Mr. I'm So Damn Hot and Mysterious, I Don't...geez, just tell us your name for crap's sake!...able to use the emergency phone/button.
Lauren proceeds to freak out because all she can think about is Death by Elevator Car when she should be coming up with ways to jump on Mr. Hot and Mysterious like most of us would (No? Just me? Uh, moving on...).
Mostly what I remember about this story is that Lauren sweats a lot. Copious amounts of flop sweat. Copious amounts of sweat not related to attempts at divesting Mr. Hot and Mysterious of his Tommy Hilfiger boxer briefs.
And, of course, as Mr. Hot and Mysterious asks her questions to calm her down, Lauren admits she is a virgin. Hence, my formula of "Boxer Briefs + Remove = Problem Solved" doesn't sound so silly now, does it, Lauren?
Because they're both getting low on air, and Lauren is getting dehydrated because she doesn't have access to a banana and some Gatorade, they decide to kiss because that's in the Stuck in the Elevator Manual, despite what I felt was a decided lack of sexual chemistry.
Maybe if Lauren had decided to make a grab for the boxer briefs, I could've gone with it, but no. She spent her precious time laying in a pool of Fear Sweat, suffocating in an elevator that is evidently as air-tight as her virginal cooch.
Then they're rescued, but she still doesn't know who Mr. Hot and Mysterious is. The End.
Lauren--I'm no rocket surgeon, but I can pretty much guess who Mr. Mysterious is. THE GUY WHO WILL SOON BE INTERVIEWING YOU. And who will subsequently hire you. And have an affair with you (the DOL will not be impressed).
Since I can evidently see into the future, I guess I won't have to buy the next book in the series which is okay, because I gave this quickie a rating of "Meh." Neither good nor bad, but not something that made me want to press download immediately or take an elevator.
I will, however, up my deodorant game because of the Fear Sweat quotient, but that's about it.
This was a short story, I guess this was like the start and makes people all work up because it certainly did that to me!
Bless Laurie, she was really desperate for this job and she sounded like she was in a bad position. I thought that because of the blurb, this story will have a huge twist, which it did but I didn't expect such devastating twist.......
I thought both of them would survive but.........
I mean they were in the elevator, they should have survived......
such a sad ending, and people should know that I'm not good with sad and tragic endings... :(
This novella was a pleasant surprise! I'll admit that to some extent the story was a bit of a stretch, but I loved the incomplete ending. Definitely a great start to a series!
3 Stars: This series has me up in knots trying to figure out the freaking order. Something is up with amazon. I have two copies of the same book with different covers that follows this introduction. Going nuts.... Want to finish it but it doesn't look like that will happen...
BTW... I recommend if you can get your hands on the the rest from an online distribution center like amazon, b&n or smashwords.
It has many redeeming qualities. The characters were likable at best neutral at worst. The writing was much better than expected. I developed an interest that withstood to the end. The plot was nice, somewhat original or had its own unique flair. The writing was good, and the pretense wasn’t half bad, the romance was simmering with few exceptions. The male/female lead showed hints of abuse both verbal and physical, or signs of spot on or forced chemistry. It was a tiny bit predictable. Overall, liked it enough, entertaining.
I found this to be a very interesting prequel novella. As the blurb states a woman heads for a job interview and then is stranded in the elevator with a stranger. My attention was grabbed from the beginning and then delightfully held through the elevator scenes as the tension rose for the occupants with the passage of time. I was left wanting to know more about these two strangers who made a connection in the darkness before they were abruptly parted. Also included is a preview of the first chapter of An Indecent Proposal which left me very curious as to how it connects to the prequel. I have an idea that I’m keeping to myself. I’m also curious as to what the friend just got her into, I suspect something about that too. I look forward to reading more.
I was bored and I've been dropping a lot of novels either because it was boring, shallow story or not so good writing style. I had this book for awhile and it crossed my path so I've decided, why not try it?
For such a short story, it was really really really good! Great writing style, it's not boring, it was exciting and very interesting. I like how the turn of events. I just loved it. And hopefully book 1 would be as satisfying or better.
5 Stars This prequel novella is well written, although short, but it held my attention from beginning to end. I loved the whole story line and can’t wait for more. I am left with more questions than answers. J.C. Reed is one of my favorite authors so I had to give this one a try. This is my first time reading anything by Jackie S. Steele, but I have to say that these two authors write well together. Can’t wait for the next book!
I realize this was just the prequel, but it was so predictable, cliché and so unbelievably unreal that I have no desire to read the series. I guess this prequel should have made me eager to read the next book, which it failed to do miserably.
This LITTLE prequel novella is set to be a teaser to the first installment of ,'An Indecent Proposal'. And I must say it left me wanting more. It left me wondering what happened to 'THE GUY WITH NO NAME'...
On a down note it was a tad bit predictable but it left me wanting more so I'll be picking up the first book...
Loved how intense this small part is and you don't find out how it all fits together until the 3rd book. Laurie is going on an interview and gets stuck in an elevator with a Mystery man who saves her life. But before they are rescued she tells him 4 secrets.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
They were trapped in an elevator. They were saved separately by the fireman. At least they kissed before that. Can't wait to know what is the next plot.
Received as an ARC COPY for honest review. Wow what a really good Prequel. This just held my attention from the word GO. Lauren enters a lift (with another person) on her way to an interview. The lift stops and the lights go out. omg!!! I actually felt as if it was me in the lift. The intensity of it all. knowing someone else is there with you and not know what they are doing, thinking...phew such feelings. Then there is the main thing that did it for me!!! His Voice. I could almost hear his voice. Such good writing and I actually said out loud "oh no!!" when it finished. Can't wait to read the full story.
What interested me about the book in the beginning, to be honest, was the cover. After I read the blurb, I decided, despite it being a short novella, I wanted to give it a try. My thoughts now? I wish it was longer! Not because the story in this book wasn't good, but because it was awesome! I was left wanting to know more. Now I can't wait for the next book to see what happens!
I really recommend this novella! It's short, but it's really intriguing and it convinced me to read the full novel when it comes out in a few weeks. Trust me about this book and give it a try! It's great!
That Guy is compelling and captivating. This is a prequel to a new series, and it does its job, and does it well. I want to shout from the rooftops how interested I am in what comes next. It is a short prequel, but what it lacks in length, it makes up for in the riveting storytelling. The authors J.C. Reed and Jackie Steele are a combination to watch out for. The writing is wonderful, and the storytelling makes That Guy a quick and enticing read. So excited to see what direction this is going to lead to! Must have more now.
Having read most of JC Reed`s books there`s no doubt this is going to another big hit. The starting storyline is unusual and gripping and has your imagination working overtime. I wanted this first novella to be so much longer, but with the added bonus of chapter one from the next book I can see were headed toward another brilliant epic love story. I was given this ARC to read for an honest review.
this was a great prequel to Jackie steel and jc reeds upcoming book...who was trapped in the elevator with Laurie and will she be able to find him after the chaos of the library floor crashing, and what about the secrets that she was sharing with Mr Sexy voice...cant wait for the book to come out I need answers like yesterday
I am giving this a three star only because the story was too short for me to give a honest review. It left me wondering what happen to the guy in the elevator, and then to read a part of An Indecent Proposal it kind of confusing so I will have to wait until the next book come out so I can give my opinion.
This is a really good prequal novella I just wish it had been a little longer but it has left me wanting to find out more about Laurie and her secret and the guy in the lift. At the end of this novella we are given a preview of the first chapter of Indecent Proposal and I am quite intrigued to see how it all connects so I will definitely be reading this full length novel when it's released.
This is a prequel but also has the first chapter of "An Indecent Proposal". Laurie is stuck in an elevator with a stranger, a sexy stranger but she didn't get a real good look at him but she just knows he's hot. When she starts to panic she feels the need to get her secrets off her chest. Before things can go to far they are saved. That's all I'll give away but the end leaves you wanting more.
It is so confusing if you have already read the Indecent proposal before... coz it is not connected or it is very much hard to say, but very catchy, this prequel will keep you rooted to the next book and keep you wondering WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED OR HAPPENING...
Confusing, confusion with lots of Confusion... but in a very catchy way...
This is a basic introduction to the series. A quick elevator scene and tragic event leaving readers wondering wtf happened and if we'll ever hear about "the man with the sexy voice" again. Here's to hoping they meet again. This prequel was enough to hook me into continuing to read the Indecent Proposal series.
I took a chance, not having heard of J.C. Reed before. I am glad that I did. I enjoyed this prequel very much and am excited to see where it leads. I am off to pre-order "An Indecent Proposal" right now.
Nice intro to her new book. I really want to know what happened to the guy on the elevator and what happened at her job interview. Can't wait to read the full length novel to find out what happened in the past and what will happen to Laurie
An interesting read that leaves you captivated. Stranded in a lift with a mysterious guy. Its dark and confessions are made. I have to admit I was hooked I read this and went hunting for the first book in the series
