This was great fun, as was the series in general. It was a shared-world scenario, one of a series of children's books set in the thoroughly delightful city of Quentaris, which was based on the Italian Renaissance city-states, but which, IMO, closely resembled Terry Pratchett's Ankh-Morpork. Only, it has a thing called the Rift, which leads to other worlds, meaning any author writing a book in the series had an excuse to have invaders, visitors, or trips to, other worlds. I think The Revognase may be the novel that introduced the city's female police chief, a character I loved in all the books. The series was unfortunately scrapped when the publisher was taken over by Hachette - really unfortunate for me, too, because I had been invited to write a Quentaris novel , dammit! :-(

If you 're curious, I think two of the books - though not this one - are currently available on iBooks. You might have to search your library or secondhand bookshop to read more.
