Captain Orion Thrace is transferring to the Valkyrie, a pirate-hunting battle cruiser in the last frontier of known space.
Officially.
The reality is more complicated.
On his way to serve a short life sentence of hard labor, the Devil—the most feared, loved, hated, and celebrated pirate across known space—escapes during a raid on the fleet caravan. Are the raiders trying to rescue him? Abduct him? Or settle an old score? The Devil doesn’t wait to find out.
To escape, he switches identities with a fleet officer who didn’t survive the pirate raid.
Captain Orion Thrace.
Now, accidentally in command of the Valkyrie, and under constant scrutiny, the Devil must get off the ship before his deception is exposed—and before he’s dragged into a plot to ignite a war.
Synjyn Rourke is the Devil You Know (ebook from Dark Shadowy Cabal). He is a pirate convicted of destroying a habitat ring and sentenced to a labor colony. The ship carrying him is attacked because he has value, but he manages to escape, somehow taking on the persona of a Consolidation Captain. But circumstances and help push him to a new place in life. Arthur Mayer tells a fun, exciting space adventure with more promised to come.
This is a fast-paced space pirate/battle story that I hope has a sequel soon. Characters were interesting and well-developed; even minor characters had personality. Dialogue is snappy and there are lots of interesting details that let you get a feel for the world the story is set in.
While the premise of identity theft in such a digitized society strains credulity, the author nimbly sidesteps the issue with astonishing adroitness, offering up a semi-plausible evasion that even the main character has difficulty believing, which honestly adds to the overall tension quite nicely!
