I picked this up because I have a lot of events coming up, weddings, graduations, significant birthdays, etc. All of them carry the distinct risk that I will be required to toast. Following the boy scout code, I purchased this in preparation.

It does what it says on the tin. The toasts are pretty comprehensive, decent, and I liked how the book was easily accessible through its categories. I've used one or two of them and reveled in the attention a good toast can produce.

I received this book through the Goodreads Giveaways program--my first ever entry and also my first win, what luck!

Having only seen the title, I assumed this book would have a bit more on speech writing rather than just quotes divided by occasion, but I realized that there really isn't a one-size-fits-all way to write a speech for a particular occasion. I recently went to a wedding where the maid of honor (sister of the bride) read off a very funny, sarcastic, and at times borderline-mean speech which worked excellent because that's the kind of humor those sisters share. That same speech wouldn't work for another family who would want a tear-jerker type of toast--in fact some might've found that speech offensive!

So, when I put that assumption aside, I was left with a pleasant little book (and by little I mean it can fit perfectly into a purse, if you're the type to need inspiration when out and about) that is well designed with rich purple pages and quote text, all organized by type of event. I have no doubt I'll find great use for it when I need it for any upcoming events I find myself having to give a toast at. There are so many proverbs, poems, prayers, and odes in this book that you can use in a speech or use to base a speech off of.

While I may not be looking forward to giving a speech at this current moment (too nerve-wracking!) I am grateful to have this book nearby to give be a bit of a nudge when I've found myself procrastinating too long (a common problem when faced with an upcoming speaking event...) Thank you Goodreads for sending this to me!
