258 books2,579 followersI live in the teeny, tiny town of Taylor, NY, (Alliteration Alert!) though my mailing address is Cincinnatus, my telephone exchange is Truxton and I pay taxes and vote in Cuyler. All of these are at least in the same rural county in the southern hills of New York State; Cortland County. There are more cattle than people here. The nearest “big” cities are Syracuse and Binghamton and they are an hour away, in different directions, and not really all that big by most standards, though they both seem humongous to me. I look out my window to see rolling, green, thickly forested hills, wildflower laden meadows and wide open blue, blue skies. My road is barely paved. The nearest neighboring place is a 700 acre dairy farm.
My house is a big, century old farmhouse. I moved in here after my divorce in 2006. Just a little over a year later, the house, which I had named, SERENITY, burned. It was 99% gutted, and I lost my two dogs, Sally, an 11-year-old great Dane, and Wrinkles, my 14-year-old, blind bulldog. This was the culmination of my Dark Night of the soul, which had seemed to hit me all at once in 2006-2007. My mother died that year, after a 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was only 60. The youngest of my five daughters had left home that same year, and while that’s not a tragedy at all, it felt like one to me. Then came the divorce. And finally there was the fire--it seemed my darkest night wasn’t quite finished with me after all. I had lost almost everything before that point, and as I poked through the wet ashes and soot the next day, I realized that I had now been stripped all the way to the bone.
No better time to start over. (And no, I didn’t come to that realization that day--there were a few days of wallowing in pity first, particularly the day after the fire, when I hit a deer and smashed up my car, which I was practically living in!)
That’s when I started to laugh. Just sat on the side of the road as the deer bounded, uninjured and carefree, out of sight, and laughed. It was just too ridiculous at that point, to do anything else!
And from there, I picked myself up, and brushed myself off, and said, okay, there’s only one way to go from here. Forward. And that’s what I did. There I was at the age of harrurmphemmph, living in my one, mostly undamaged remaining room, with a dorm-sized mini-fridge, a futon, a TV, my cat (nine lives!) and a laptop. And not much else. (Though thank goodness the room that survived the fire, was a room that had its own attached bathroom!)
Since then I have rebuilt my beloved home, which really has become my haven, my “Serenity.” I share it now with my fiancé, Lance, and we have accumulated quite the little family together. “Little” being a relative term. We have a pair of English Mastiffs, Dozer and Daisy, who weigh 203 pounds and 208 pounds respectively, and a little pudgy English Bulldog named Niblet, who is bigger than both of them, inside her mind. We also have the aforementioned cat, Glorificus (“Glory” for short,) who adores her canine pups and keeps them firmly in line. And we've acquired a pair of stray cats as well, a mother and son, Luna (Lulu for short) and Butters aka Buddy. Lulu showed up pregnant during a lunar eclipse, had a litter, and vanished again. We found homes for all the kittens except one. Butters. We got him fixed and kept him. A few months later, Lulu returned, again expecting. This litter was born on the "Monster Moon." Again, all the kittens were spayed and neutered and placed in homes, and this time we got Lulu to the vet in time to spay her before the cycle could repeat.
Glory is not amused.
She has a story of her own, my old Glory cat, having been with me before the Dark Times descended, she went through it all with me, moved with me, survived the fire, and remains with me still. She's tolerating the newcomers. Barely.

Two by Twilight has two novellas from the Wings in the Night series. For some reason they are in the wrong order - we start with #9, Run From Twilight. Michael, an ex-cop turned vampire, knows that Mary is in danger, but how to tell her without scaring her away? As he sets himself up as her guardian and the danger comes closer the sparks begin to fly - but will she be able to accept him for what he is? A cute good cop rescues sexy girl tale with a bit of a twist. A little predictable, but still a lot of fun.
The second novella is #6, Twilight Vows. This one was my favorite of the two - possible because it's Irish - love reading stories about Ireland. When Donovan O'Roark returns to a castle that contains haunting memories for him, he finds himself entranced with Rachel - a local village girl. Rachel also thinks he's quite fascinating, but she's the only one that isn't afraid of him. When the horrible thing that happened in the past begins to repeat itself, it's up to Rachel to save the day this time. This story was quite romantic and very sweet. The characters were fun and a little different.
The second novella is #6, Twilight Vows. This one was my favorite of the two - possible because it's Irish - love reading stories about Ireland. Mini raccolta di due storie:
-Twilight Vows
Storia carina, dai toni cupi ma d'effetto. Nulla d'eccezionale ma dei soliti toni della Shayne. Certo, si va a collocare prima del racconto di Dante visto che ne da in una certa sorta il via, ma nonostante tutto riesce a scostarsi e a rimanere tale. Anche se breve non perde in nulla rispetto a quelle più lunghe...e poi Rachel piace. Non si contraddistingue nel suo stereotipo di protagonista umana in una storia vamp ma riesce a catturare l'attenzione su di se, maggiormente di quanta ne catturi Donovan.
-Run from Twilight
Collegata alla storia delle trame principali tramite la presenza fantasma di Cuyler Jade (Campanellino credo di ricordare :P ). Lo stacco temporale con la precedente storia è forte ma non troppo distante. Il legame poliziesco che si instaura tra i due nuovi protagonisti del racconto, Mary e Michael, riesce a fare da ponte con i racconti precedenti e con il futuro prossimo libro. Questa è una pecca delle antologie ma che comunque almeno sono da apprezzare. La storia dei due non ha molto di diverso dalle precedenti. Lei possiede l’antigene, lui la vuole proteggere perché minacciata da uno spietato assassino, ma ciò nonostante è carina e funzionale nel suo scopo di ponte temporale.
Come antologie non è particolarmente accattivante per il contenuto obsoleto della trama, ma per lo meno riesce semplicemente a dare un senso agli avvenimenti degli altri racconti e ai loro personaggi senza abbandonarli del tutto a se stessi. Nulla di eccezionale, volendo lo si può tralasciare ma se si vuole avere una visione a tutto tondo della vicenda è meglio non perderselo. Sufficiente complessivamente ma gli do qual cosina in meno di 4****.

I feel like Run from Twilight is the weakest installment in the Wings in the Night series. While the overall idea of the story isn't bad, it feels very rushed. I wish that Shayne had taken more time to draw the story out and develop the romance, as she did with her earlier stories. Just a few stories ago, we had Twilight Hunger, where she experimented with dual storylines, and introduced some truly interesting characters that we see again in this volume--for a distractingly short amount of time. Run from Twilight feels like a huge step back. Twilight Vows, however, is a legitimately interesting story with that plays well into the rich back story that we got with Dante, and certainly makes up for the lag of the other novella. It's just a shame. They both could have been such nice works.

Good, fun, entertaining vampire romance collection with two short stories/novellas. One is a reissue and I had already had it, but it wasn't pricey to buy this book just for one story.
The good: Well-written, sexy, and fun. You like both couples, though I did like the second story much more. I had no problem with the way she wrote the Irish accent. Its not correctly spelled, but that's what most of us hear when speaking to someone Irish. A little exaggerated, but as he's centuries old, maybe that's the point.
The not-so-good: For some reason, the stories are in the wrong order. Drives me crazy. And I felt both stories could have used more of a 'happily ever after' chapter to wrap it up. I also don't really like that the heroine in the first story, Mary, was sneaking around to get information on Michael. I don't know, the paranoia was a little too exaggerated to me. These reasons are why it's rated 3 stars instead of 4.
It was worth the read though! I don't even care if neither story really adds to the overall series storyline.

Run from Twilight... Mike and Mary... Mike - police officer in 1928 Chicago - Capone is shooting out with rival gang, and when a scared child gets in the crossfire, and Mike moves forward to cover the child, and takes 9 bullets... in the hospital, a vampiress offers him life, telling him he is worthy - and he takes her up on it... when he goes to his wife the next night, she has been preparing to commit suicide without him, and in fear at seeinghim alive, she kills herself rather than face his change...
80 years later - Mike has lived his life on blood banks, and helping the police around the country behind the scenes, but basically alone... and e becomes aware of 4 women with the belladonna antigen, in different states, that were missing and murdered and then he feels the psychic warning about mary...
Mary is putting herself through school slowly, working at a bar; she has been getting crank, threatening calls, and someone broke into her apartment... and Mike has been coming in for 2 weeks, not drinking, just watching her... she confronts him, thinking he might be her stalker - he tells her he is there to protect her... and a male coworker is apparently dead - burned to death in his bed - and there was evidence found that he was her stalker...
It is 4 nights until the full moon, and that it when the other women were taken... and each night they get closer... she is drawn to him, she doesn't trust her own judgement... she calls a paranormal pi at the referral a policeman... the 3rd night, he tells her he is a vampire - she goes to the pi's office, and learns more... when returning late to Mike (who is awake & with the policeman trying to backtrack her route),
she pulls over to help someone on the side of the road. and it is her coworker, who is the murderer... his sister died in a car accident, she had the belladona antigen, but the vampires would not save his sister... so he joined vampire slayers, and was killing prevampire women... by stabbing them numerous times, handing them upside down, slashing their throats, and letting them bleed to death... he attacks Mary, stabbing her numerous times, but the pi couple who followed her finally caught up and he ran off... she was still bleeding to death when Mike found them, and he of course turns her... and their connection and love can continue to grow...
Twilight Vows... Donovan and Rachel...
200 years ago, Ireland, Donvan was a young man who was getting weak... as he stumbles one night on the way home, a man, Dante, helps him, and tells him he is dying and he can save him - and turns him vampire. Donovan wakes up the next night in his coffin, laid out at the local tarvern - and when he tries to tell his family and his fiance (a Sullivan) that he is alive and still himself, they call him a devil, and his fiance insists they kill him, and the priest and his father come at hime with a stake and mallet... he escapes,
and lives 100 years with Dante as his only friend. they return to Dante's castle above the village, and though Dante had taught Donovan not to trust humans, Dante falls in love with another Sullivan maid from the village... and when he tells her the truth of himself, she returns with the villagers just as dawn is breaking, and set fire to the castle, and the two make a run of it to the woods - going in opposite directions... donovan hides out in a haystack, and never sees Dante again - assumes he is dead...
and over the next 100 years Donovan is alone - not trusting anyone... he periodically returns to the castle- hiring workmen to restore parts of it... and he is drawn to another Sullivan girl, this one with the antigen... and he rescues her from almost drowning in the lake, and comes to her in the night after her parents died, holding her hand as she cried - but disappeared, and she believed he was a figment of her imagination... and she goes to America for 8 years to work on her doctorate in anthropology... and she returns home to work on her dissertation, about the town legend of Dante and Donovan...
and he shows up in the tavern, startling the locals... and she follows him, and he knows it... and he takes her into the castle, and shows her around the main hall and it's history... and it is storming,, so he takes her to the room Dante had set up for her Sullivan ancestor to sleep and tells her to leave in the morning, and not to explore the castle as it was dangerous... they share an almost kiss, and almost bite, but he leaves her...
and in the morning, she breaks her word, and looks for the way to the front door, and gets lost, and stumbles down stairs, and scares some bats, and falls asleep, and opening many doors, as evening falls, she opens the door to his room, and its casket, and his rising...
and he keeps her another night, and there is attraction,, and fear on both of their parts... and he tells her she cannot leave until he has set up a new identity, and he tells her of himself, and shares his garden, and brings her to a suite of rooms, that he obviously set up for a dream woman... for her, one he had been drawn to... and she comes to realize she loves him... and he invites him to her bed, having saved herself for her dream man... but she knows not to scare him with the depth of feeling he was not ready to accept...
and Mary, from the tavern comes the 2nd night to tell her that the men were coming to the castle, and she leaves him to try and stop them... and she fails, and she follows them to the castle... where Donovan is waiting for them, and he has come to accept her innocence... and as one of the men raise their rifle, she jumps to try and stop him, and is shot... and the men are shocked by their own behavior, Mary tells them it is only a surface wound, and looks at Donovan to say can you save her...
and leaves them, and Donovan confesses his love, and Rachel says yes, she wants to be with him always...

Two stories in this, the 2nd better than the first. I am not a fan of vampire stories, that story line soured me on the writing. Years ago I read a lot of Maggie Shayne but lost track of her - perhaps her writings such as this is why.

Non mi piacciono quelli divisi in due, già di principio. Quando poi le due storie sono scollegate, come in questo caso - tenute assieme solo da un tenue accenno nella seconda parte - la mia testa si rifiuta di comprendere. Carino ma boh.

Questa storia mi ha fatto pensare un po’ alla storia di La bella e la bestia ma comunque mi è piaciuta. Semplice,delicata,con brevi scene hot e un buon intreccio . Peccato per il numero limitato di pagine lungo cui si distribuisce. Termina troppo repentinamente e ci lascia appena intravedere il futuro dei protagonisti. Nella seconda parte troviamo Mary un’altra giovane donna portatrice dell’antigene che viene presa di mira da un killer di futuri vampiri. Una notte Michael,un ex poliziotto e ora vampiro le spiega cosa sta succedendo e le promette di proteggerla. E’ un amore improvviso perché Mary sente di conoscerlo da sempre pur non avendolo mai visto . Michael da canto suo cerca di resistere perché ha già sperimentato sulla sua pelle l’orrore di rivelare alla sua donna cosa sia in realtà. Ma non ha fatto i conti con la sua protetta che si impadronirà del suo cuore per l’eternità. Stavolta troviamo un breve giallo con una punta di suspense. Passione,amore,buoni sentimenti e un intreccio intrigante. Ben scritto ma come il precedente si sviluppa in poche pagine.

Two short stories (Book 6 and 9) in one volume from the Wings in the Night Series. Frustrates me how all these books have been released in package deals out of sequence. Me....I NEED to read in sequence.
Both are interesting reads and fill in some gaps/information with characters and storylines in the other books, but at the end of the day neither book left me wanting more and I felt they were both spot on average (and dare I say it 'really cliche'). I know these paranormal romance books are cliche by nature, but after reading some of the other series (ie Black Dagger Brotherhood) this series has faded in appeal.
Book 9 was definitely the more interesting of the two books. Book 6 was actually really painful and I wouldn't recommend it.....nothing happened. Just some villagers going on a rampage to kill a vampire, while the vampire is getting it on (PG style) with a local lass in his castle.....yes....that is the entire storyline there (spoilers and all :-p)
I will keep reading the series as I am curious to know whether some of the more recent books (the most recent of these two was written nearly a decade ago) steps up the pace a little.
This book I would recommend for die hard fans of the series. For those not familiar with the series, I would skip most of the first 9 book and only focus on book 3 and 5.

As usual, I love the stories that Maggie Shayne has told. In this book, I got two. The first was the story of Mary and Michael. I loved the story of how Michael became a vampire and I loved how it intertwined with the romantic story between him and Mary. He does have plenty to be protective of since there is a serial killer after her. I will say that this story pulled at my emotions as did the second story.
The second story also has plenty of history in it. It is the story of Donovan and Rachel. Again, the back story of Donovan pulled at my heart strings. I must say that I love Rachel. She is one of my favorite vampires. She's got a lot of fire. I loved the romance in both books and I loved the action in it. One final note of happiness, I was joyous that the second story happened in Ireland. So, the setting was also pleasant and welcome. I will say thank you, Maggie Shayne for keeping me entertained. She always seems to do that. I recommend this book for anyone who loves vampires, romance and the paranormal. I really don't think you need to look any further than this series for all of that.

Two 150 page novellas packaged together.
RUN FROM TWILIGHT. Ugh. The heroine and hero know each other by glances over two weeks before the start, then it is game on. My problem is that it goes straight to love for no particular reason. Also, the author plays fast and loose with details. When it suits her, the police suddenly have the heroine's blood profile and are smart enough to decide a string of murders is because of a rare "belladonna" antigen. It's cheesey.
TWILIGHT VOWS. Better premise on why the hero and heroine love each other, but same cheesey blood antigen reason for causing vampires and The Chosen humans they can love and change. Did they really know all about antigens in 1808? Somehow I think detailed blood work ups weren't common then so as to be the talk of vampires in remote Irish villages.
She writes well. I just have a problem with the details of her vampires - a special belladonna antigen, dying young when human, bleeding to death both before and after changing - and the facts of convenience.

"Twilight Vows" book 6 in the series. 5 stars. Focuses on Rachel Sullivan (a Chosen) and Donovan (vampire) in.... Scotland- I believe. A short, but very sweet story.

A fun escapist read. I actually started reading this a while ago, and when I picked it back up, I thought I had the wrong book at first because of the two different storylines. The story I preferred wasn't even mentioned on the back cover, which was a bit misleading. There was a violent "sizzle" scene that made me nauseous to the point that I had to stop reading and lie down :P I don't think I like vampires as much anymore...

Fun, quick read. Some reviewers complained that Mary and Michael couldn't possibly fall in love in just a few days. Newsflash people - this is FANTASY, vampires aren't real either. So just go with the flow and enjoy the story.

Ambas historias cortas son muy entretenidas y la verdad me han gustado mucho, pero no les encuentro sentido en cuanto a la línea argumental de la saga. Es obvio para mí q los libros están conectados entre sí, así que me resulta difícil encajar estas dos historias en el mundo creado por Shyne.

My all time fav in this series is Michael's story in Run From Twilight. The heroine Mary is the type of heroine I am on board with. A tough gusty chick who stands by her man. You go girl!

Just read Maggie's free Wings of the Night series of 6 books. All were exceptional and would make a much better movie than the Twilight series did.
