Anya Volkov has spent years learning how to hold herself together. After working under a superior who made her doubt every instinct, she’s clawed her way back into confidence one shift at a time — quietly proving she belongs in the chaos of the ER. She doesn’t need saving. She doesn’t need hand-holding. What she needs is control. And then Desmond Vance walks into her trauma bay and calmly dismantles that illusion with a steady voice, a grounding presence, and a way of looking at her that feels entirely too perceptive.
Desmond doesn’t get distracted at work. At forty-nine, he’s built a career — and a reputation — on control, precision, and never letting anything, or anyone, get too close. But Anya is different. She listens. She adapts. She trusts him in a way that slips under his skin before he can stop it. What starts as quiet mentorship turns into something charged, something dangerous — something neither of them is willing to name out loud. Not in a hospital where boundaries matter. Not when everything between them feels like a line waiting to be crossed.
Spice 🌶 🌶 Found this book captivating from the beginning Fml couldn't break with her mentor at work he constantly undermining everything she did Ml instantly attracted to the fml thought once would be enough and it wasn't Once the ml had the accident and the trama it showed low and how he had to fight his inner demon along with the fml help as support as she treated him no different
It was like reading greys anatomy
Will be reading more by this author thank you for the arc

I had some difficulty understanding the timeline in the beginning. The story starts when Desmond and Anya meet at the hospital and there is an immediate ✨something✨ between them. About 40 pages / 9% in Desmond’s internal monologue is about being inside her, which felt quite sudden. A few pages later he tells her he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about her for “a while”, but it’s unclear how much time has passed. Weeks? Months? Later it’s revealed that it’s been about a week, which makes Desmond’s revelation seem kind of dramatic.
The characters are quite flat. There’s very little backstory and we hardly know anything about them besides their names and that there’s a significant age gap between them. Same goes for the plot. There’s two people who are immediately attracted to each other and they act on it quite quickly. Even though everything happens in secret, it never quite built the tension or intrigue I was hoping for.
I honestly found the story quite boring until halfway through. Up until that point, I felt like it was more smut than plot. The plot really only starts going with the last sentence of chapter 32, on page 175. And even then everything stays a bit too superficial for me.
I do think the second half of the book was a lot better than the first, but it wasn’t enough to fully make up for the first half for me. The ending also came quite sudden, I feel like there was room to expand there and create a bit more depth.
In general, though not really my style, the book isn’t badly written. It lacked depth in my opinion, which made it hard for me to connect with the characters.
I honestly didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did! I usually avoid workplace romances, but Vital Signs completely shattered my expectations. The story drops us straight into the chaotic environment of a busy hospital, following Anya’s professional growth on the night shift alongside Desmond, a senior colleague who actively empowers her rather than intimidating her.
The respectful power dynamics truly stood out to me. Desmond genuinely respected Anya as a colleague first, giving her confidence back long before they ever got together, which is incredibly refreshing for an age-gap romance. Their emotional connection is incredibly strong, perfectly balanced with steamy scenes and a great sense of humor, all set within a surprisingly non-toxic work environment. While I do wish there was a bit more background on their initial attraction and a direct conversation where they actually defined their relationship status, those are minor gripes in an otherwise fantastic read.
If you’re into Medical Romance with plenty of heat (which can easily be skipped without missing a thing!) and incredible character growth, add this to your TBR immediately. I will absolutely be reading the rest of the series. As this quote perfectly captures: "I walk beside him—not behind, not hidden—into whatever came next, waiting on the other side of frosted glass and tough questions."
Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
So, I think that the premise is good. The medical information are well done and I think that the overall ER setting was captured well. LOVE the amputee rep and especially the focus on his frustration and anger. The misogyny aspect was definitely aggravating, so also done well.
Now… while I do like the characters and the idea of their relationship overall, I do think that it could’ve been done better. While the sexual attraction was realistic and the spice hot, I feel like it lacked a bit depth? Atleast when it came to their actual relationship. That kinda came out of nowhere…. And how did they learn so much about each other? Idk. The whole thing was solid, but that kinda threw me off a little.

Vital Signs by L.V. Brooks is exactly what its title promises—and more. This isn’t just a story you read; it’s one you physically feel. Your pulse quickens, your breath catches, and before you realize it, you’re completely inside it.
From the moment Anya Volkov steps into her second year as an ER resident—transitioning from day shift into the unforgiving intensity of nights—you can feel the shift. The chaos sharpens. The stakes rise. And then Dr. Desmond Vaughn walks into her trauma bay.
And everything changes.
Desmond is not loud. He doesn’t need to be. At 49, he carries a quiet authority—the kind built on years of control, precision, and an almost surgical understanding of people. The way he dismantles situations with calm certainty is compelling enough. But the way he sees her? That’s where the tension ignites.
What begins as mentorship quickly evolves into something far more dangerous.
One of the most powerful elements of this book is the dual point of view. Experiencing both Anya’s and Desmond’s perspectives brings the story full circle in a way that feels intimate and deeply immersive. You don’t just see what’s happening—you understand why. You feel the restraint, the curiosity, the internal conflict from both sides as their strictly professional dynamic begins to fracture.
And when it breaks, it doesn’t ease in.
There’s a moment where control slips. Where Desmond pulls Anya into his office under the pretense of drawing a line—one time, get it out of their system, and then it ends. But that moment doesn’t resolve anything. It ignites everything.
From there, the tension doesn’t disappear—it deepens.
What follows isn’t a traditional slow burn from the beginning, but something more volatile: an initial loss of control that transforms into a sustained, simmering tension neither of them can fully contain. Every interaction afterward carries weight. Every glance feels loaded. Every choice feels like a step further past the point of no return.
There’s also an underlying dynamic that begins to surface—subtle at first, then undeniable. A current of control and surrender, bordering on dominance and submission at times, that adds a charged intensity to their connection. It’s never overstated, which makes it even more effective. It lives in the pauses, the restraint, and the unspoken understanding between them.
And the tension?
Unrelenting.
L.V. Brooks crafts a dynamic that feels both controlled and completely volatile. You know the boundaries. They know the boundaries. And yet… they blur. Then break.
By the time you reach the later chapters, those hospital rules don’t just bend—they become irrelevant.
What makes Vital Signs stand out is its immersive nature. You don’t just watch Anya and Desmond—you live beside them. You feel the pressure of the ER, the weight of decisions, the pull of something that shouldn’t exist but refuses to be ignored.
And yes—the title couldn’t be more perfect because this book will absolutely affect your vital signs. The pacing, the secrecy, the tension threaded through every interaction—it’s enough to make your heart race right along with theirs.
This is one of those rare stories that doesn’t just tell you about intensity—it creates it.
Flawless in execution. Addictive in pacing. Unforgettable in connection.
If you’re looking for something that is equal parts psychological tension, slow-burn chemistry, and emotional immersion—with an edge of something darker simmering beneath the surface—Vital Signs delivers in every possible way.
Phenomenal ARC read (thank you L V Brooks. Couldn't put it down, was riveted. I gasped, I cried. Such a great story, amazing writing. So much love for this one.
Please go in cold. don't read the spoilers.
Anya & Desmond. She's a resident, he's the attending. It's sort of forbidden, also age-gap, super smart MCs -- all of which makes it very very hot. First half is how the tension buds and builds. They stumble their way to a nascent FWB situationship (ish) -- but before anything can even really take root, there's a pretty catastrophical event that turns this entire book on its head. The second half of the book is them being catapulted into a new reality that neither of them planned for, and how it impacts everything for them. And how they navigate this unchartered territory, together.
This author is an auto-buy for me. I found her a little later, with Hallpass, but I've been a firm fan since. She has a very unique knack with how she explores relationships. She frames them up so well, digs deep to the heart of them and takes you on these deep, emotional odysseys where you just get so wrapped up in the main characters. There is a story and a broader picture, but it's secondary to the intensity of the developing relationship. She also writes some very nice spice, if that works for you : )
Why I loved every single second of this book: 🖤 witty banter 🖤 he falls first 🖤 lots of spice 🔥 🖤 tension. So much tension 🖤 good ol trauma bonding
This story jumps right into the good stuff. I felt like I was watching a medical drama. So much action right off the bat. I was pulled right into the story and couldn't put it down. The tension, their proximity, I could feel it. It was so genuine and real.
The characters are sarcastic and funny, and that is what really pulls me into a story. Not just the MMC and FMC, I genuinely liked every single character. Aside from Patel, obviously.
How vulnerable Desmond is absolutely gutted me. It was beautiful that in his lowest moments he never diminished Anya. That's book boyfriend material right there. Anya has unwavering love and he never took advantage or took it for granted. LOVE.
Let's just give a quick mention to everyone's favourite L.V Brooks microtrope...to do with Desmond...and his pants. 🔥
And that ending, subtle and beautifully done. Did I mention I friggin loved every single second of this book?
Let's also just honorably metion the dedication. I have lots of strong words for whoever this was (it was probably a man 😂). But that's a rant for another platform.
Thank you so much to L.V Brooks for allowing me to read and review this ARC. Your stories are some of my favorites.
This was everything I was needing on a week where I didn't have an episode of The Pitt to look forward to. Also, an mmc who is so perfectly Jack Abott coded?? I'm thriving.
Insta-lust/insta-love can be tricky, but I think it worked really well in this story and it was kinda necessary, for a number of reasons that I won't elaborate on. But I mean, the way they were so attuned to each other while working on traumas and how quickly they became this well-oiled machine just spoke to how strong their connection was. They had such an easy rhythm together - it was kind of magic and also fascinating to read about. I loved the way Desmond helped foster Anya's confidence and only highlighted her skills that were already there.
The halfway point took me by surprise. I think I should have been expecting it, but I was just vibing with Desmond and Anya and was as blindsided as they were. It honestly warmed my heart to see the way their loved endured through adversity. I think they very easily could have succumbed to the weight of it all, but they thrived, and although it wasn't always pretty, they both persevered and made each other stronger through it all. It was beautiful and the very definition of what love is made of.
I picked this up expecting a steamy hospital romance, and instead I got a full‑body experience. It’s filled with adrenaline, longing, sass, and a plot twist that genuinely knocked the wind out of me.
Anya Volkov is the kind of FMC I root for instantly. She’s thirty, brilliant, sharp‑tongued, and constantly underestimated by everyone on the night shift… except Dr. Desmond Vaughn. And that’s where the magic starts.
“His presence was infuriatingly alluring.”
The forbidden tension between them is unreal. Every hallway interaction, every clipped instruction, every moment he watches her with that quiet intensity, you feel how far gone he is. Desmond isn’t just attracted to her; he’s enamored, undone, absolutely down bad in a way that makes every scene crackle. And Anya, she gives as good as she gets. Her sass, her competence, her refusal to shrink herself with the help of his praise and encouragement, it’s intoxicating.
“All flushed and ruined. My fault, entirely.”
The hospital setting adds this constant hum of urgency, and the spice hits at exactly the right moments. But what surprised me most was how well the emotional punches landed. When the twist drops, it reframes everything, and watching them navigate it together made the romance feel even more earned.
By the end, I wasn’t just invested, I was obsessed. This is the kind of forbidden, high‑tension, high‑heat romance that keeps you awake long after the night shift ends.
A huge thank you to L.V. Brooks for the early copy!
I received an advance reader copy at no charge. This is my honest, voluntary review.
Read for: A forbidden workplace romance in a medical setting, with plenty of spice, an age gap with highly competent characters, and hurt comfort.
What a journey for these two.
First, I have to say that I love L.V. Brooks shouting out Shawn Hatosy's performance on The Pitt as inspo for the MMC, Dr. Vaughn. It made the age gap and his overall vibe incredibly hot.
What I enjoyed:
Early scenes with Dr. Vaughn and Dr. Volkov at work. Their chemistry in a high pressure environment and the way they moved around one another was intoxicating.
The balance of emotional and physical connection as the story went on.
Several spicy scenes that I wont spoil, but wow do they stick out in my mind.
Meeting some of the other characters in this universe.
Dual hurt comfort that takes place with such care due to their emotional connection.
I would have liked more integration with other side characters. And more backstory for the two leads worked in.
Overall, this was a spicy, enjoyable journey. If you like any of the tropes listed above, give it a read.
Vital Signs by L.V. Brooks is the perfect read for people who are obsessed with The Pitt and Jack Abbot.
The way the romance between Anya and Desmond developed was so beautiful. They didn’t have a crazy meet-cute or a traditional relationship arc; they just naturally gravitated toward each other and leaned on one another during the hardships of their lives. I loved that they had the difficult conversations that were needed, but communicated through them without ending in a major fight or breakup.
This was the kind of book where you completely immerse yourself in the story and forget that you were reading in the first place. The writing was great, and the pacing was perfect. Every time I put my Kindle down, either to go to bed or to work, I found myself wanting to pick it back up and keep reading.
I loved the hints at which couple will be next in this series. The few scenes they were in have me so excited for their story, and the angst that will probably be included in their romance.
Thank you so much to L.V. Brooks for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
First, I want to thank L.V. Brooks for giving me the opportunity to read this book early!
This book blew me away in the best way. I’ll admit I’m not usually a fan of the instant-attraction trope, but L.V. Brooks wrote it in a way that made me fall in love with the characters.
Anya desperately needs to believe in herself more, and Desmond, who never loses control and doesn’t let anyone get close, can’t seem to stay away from his intern. What starts as a one-time thing to get it out of their systems quickly turns into a real and raw connection between them.
The writing style in this book truly impressed me. It’s so well written, and I found myself underlining so many quotes.
Anya and Desmond’s connection, although fast, feels very natural, and it’s incredibly easy to root for them.
This book has so much depth. It’s emotional and made my heart ache for them. The way the author portrays vulnerability, the love between the characters after everything they’ve been through, and how trauma can affect a person, while also showing that it’s okay to ask for help and not always be strong, made me love this book even more.
I want to thank L.V. again for this amazing opportunity, and I can’t wait to read what you write next!
I was lucky enough to snag an ARC of this. Came for the thinly-veiled Dr. Abbot smut, stayed for the sweetest, most wonderful couple.
I love the world of romance books where the rules of what is reasonable are not quite what they are in the real world. Where a senior attending can prescribe One Dick-Down to his resident as a reasonable solution to their mutual attraction to just “get it out of our systems.” And that’s like, chapter two.
What follows is a delightfully spicy couple of weeks for Drs. Volkov and Vaughn as they swear they’re just having fun. Mmhmm. Sure you are, you sweet dumb angels.
Then some plot happens which I won’t spoil, but rest assured these two keep the romance alive.
This was such a fun read, and I love the dynamic between Anya and Desmond so very much. They’re just fun to be around, as it were. I haven’t highlighted and annotated this much in aaaaages.
Anya & Desmond both work overnight in the ER. He is her superior and senior. So you already know there’s going to be line crossing, angst, HR, and some Greys Anatomy like storyline.
This is a dual POV, so we get to read the story through both of them with each of their thoughts and feelings throughout. There was some great spice but the “depth” of the story felt off for the intensity of their relationship. It’s like they went 0-100 pretty quickly without knowing each other- unless that’s just implied. There is a point in the book where things take a turn, and at that point the relationship takes a hit but I enjoyed from then on- the type of relationship between them and how one opened the others eyes to understanding “I’m here with you/for you”. Again- the relationship felt rushed and awkward as to how it got where it ended up, but overall it was very much a Grey’s Anatomy episode.
I received an ARC for Vital Signs book one the the Saints of Salem series. Im excited for the opportunity. This is Anya and Desmond's story... Anya is a second year resident. She used to work bays but gets moved to the night shift. Desmond (Des) is a senior resident. And now has Anya working for him. He is told she is shy and not up to standards Des is surprised that that is not even close to the case. Anya is a brilliant doctor and blossoms under is calm small directions. Their attraction is instant but both know its not professional. So they agree to just once that quickly becomes a friend with benefits arrangement. Then the incident happened and they have to maneuver in a new way that deepens their connection. I loved them together their was never a power imbalance even with him being older and her superior. Can't wait for the rest of this series.
Vital Signs by L.V. Brooks is an emotional and engaging romance that kept me invested from start to finish. The story dives into themes of trauma, healing, and love in a way that feels both raw and relatable.
What stood out most to me was the connection between the characters. Their dynamic was filled with tension, vulnerability, and moments that genuinely made me feel something. The emotional beats landed well, and I found myself rooting for them as they navigated their complicated circumstances.
There were a few pacing issues here and there, and I would have loved a bit more depth in certain areas, but overall, the story was compelling and hard to put down.
If you enjoy romances that balance emotional weight with strong character chemistry, this one is definitely worth picking up.
Code Blue because this book had me stop breathing for a few parts! The tension and banter between Desmond and Anya was so well crafted. I did not see the twist halfway through, but it added so much depth to their characters. I loved how the author portrayed love not only in the physical context, but in the emotional one as well.
I highly recommend this book to those that love medical romances, forbidden relationships, and banter with tension that can fill a room!
Thank you to the author for letting me be part of this ARC. Please note all reviews are my honest and unbiased opinion.
Dr. Desmond Vaughn, the boss, and Dr. Anya Volkov, the resident -- a secret, taboo romance in a medical setting -- Grey's Anatomy in book form - love it.
The chemistry was instant and Desmond fell first, offered that they have a one and done, and they go about business as usual. How did that work out for you Desmond?
Their relationship grew, clandestinely, and it became harder for them to hide it. A life changing injury due to an accident just strengthened their feelings for each other, made them stronger as a couple, and their support for each other was emotional and heartwarming.
This story follows Anya, a medical resident, and Desmond, the attending physician she definitely shouldn’t be falling for. The chemistry between them builds slowly at first, eventually turning into a complicated friends-with-benefits type situation. Just when their relationship starts to take shape, a major event completely changes the direction of their lives. From that point on, the story becomes an emotional journey of navigating unexpected circumstances together. This author always does an incredible job exploring the emotional depth of relationships, and this book was no exception.
Hands down, one of the best "They're both doctors and they work in the same hospital department" books. Also, I like how majority of the book takes place in the hospital. Not a whole lot of outside conflict in this one, which I love. And no miscommunication trope in sight, at least not to me. Honestly, I can't blame Anya; I, too, would choose Desmond if I was her. The characters compliment each other so well. I was sad I got to the ending so quick.
I was hooked from the very start. I received this book as an arc reader. I read it so fast because it grabbed my attention and didn’t let go. Anya starts working the trauma bay on night shifts where she stumbles into Desmond, her superior. He has her full attention from the very second they lock eyes. This power dynamic has a hold on Desmond so much he can’t stop thinking about her. They both fell for each other at the same time, but he fell the hardest. Author L.V Brooks wrote so beautifully that I hope to read even more by them. It was such an awesome book that I was so glad to read!
Obsessed doesn't begin to cover how I feel about this book.
I love Anya and Desmond so much. They are my emotional support couple, your honor. They grow together and are the supportive partners they each need. I felt ALL the emotions, and the spice was the cherry on top.
I need the next book in this series A S A P!
Thank you to the author for my copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was absolutely amazing!! I have been looking for an ER setting book and this one exceeded all expectations! The relationships between Anya and Desmond was perfect. Their connection not only in the professional realm but also romantically was perfect!! Even when tragically struck, they remained stuck to each other! Anya didn’t let anyone’s opinion of her medical experience stop her! Omg I don’t have a bough good things to say about this book!!
Okay immediately, that dedication, that’s some Queen business right there This book had me up crying at 2am, I was not prepared to feel so deeply for these characters or for love to be displayed in such a real way. This one didn’t shy away from any of the ugly bits and I feel like in romances the ugly bit are downplayed or honestly just swept under the rug. Brooks leans into that in this book and I leaned in with them and hell yeah it’s a ride my friend
LV did it again!! Love The Pitt? The Resident? ER? Greys Anatomy??
Run to this book on release day!!
Anya and Desmond’s love story tackled all the emotions, all the potential stressors of their career and then some! I almost broke for a bit thinking: “oh no… don’t you do that!” But she didn’t and all was well and I absolutely loved every bit of this read!
Bring on the rest of the series my love!! I can’t wait!!
This dual-POV, forbidden workplace romance—with an age gap, medical setting, and plenty of heat—had me hooked right away. The writing drew me in instantly, making me feel deeply connected to the characters. LV Brooks crafted Anya and Desmond’s story in a way that made me feel like I was right there with them. The tension of their forbidden relationship kept me completely invested. If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, you’ll love this book.
Avoid spoilers—you’ll definitely want to go in blind.
I enjoyed this book a lot Anya and Desmond were a spicy couple together This book is giving Mohabbot from the Pitt with Desmond in inspiration from Dr Jack Abbot from the Pitt. With Anya I really related and resonated with her regarding her anxiety and second guessing with her work. Their relationship was a slow-ish burn but then it becomes hot and heavy and the level of spice is hot hot hot 🔥🔥🔥 All in all this is a great read and I highly recommend it!

An addictive age gap romance, plenty of spice, and a hospital romance that brought all the tension and high stakes. Add in the emotional moments and a twist that had me staring at my Kindle in complete shock… I was hooked.
The tension between Desmond and Anya was EVERYTHING—the kind that builds slowly and then hits all at once. Their story pulled me in so deeply, and I felt every moment with them 🤍
L.V. did it once again!!! I absolutely LOVED this story, and I desperately needed a romance that didn’t involve a 3rd act breakup! I love how delicately L.V. handled the amputee storyline, everything felt so gritty and real. There were so many times I caught myself tearing up, for both Anya and Des! Their chemistry and the way they knew what each other needed was so swoon worthy. I am so excited to see what else happens with this series 😍

I was immediately hooked by Vital Signs by LV Brooks. It is a strong, moving story that I felt a part of. Anya and Desmond are amazing characters and doctors that I cheered on from the beginning; but later also respected immensely. I admire how they show such strength and determination throughout. This is a definite must read!!
