The Destroyers have come from beyond the stars, and the Din-no race is dying beneath their guns.
Outgunned and outclassed, Blazeward's forces are all that stand between survival and annihilation. Those he leads are more than just soldiers, they are his kin. But his courage and cunning may not be enough. The alien invaders possess technology far beyond that of the Din-no, and his kind have been driven back into their underground metropolis, and the final days of his race are fast approaching.
This is the battle that will forge his name. With hope fading, every decision weighs heavy, and one wrong move could doom his kind. The Destroyers must be stopped. No matter the cost.
An action-driven, emotionally charged military sci-fi novella from an alien perspective, Blood On The Stars tells of the moment a leader is made, through fire, sacrifice, and impossible odds.

Blood On The Stars by Matthew Gill is the latest addition to his Universe of UCEF (United Creatures Empyrean Force), following on from the fantastic short story Exodus To The Stars and ahead of the upcoming novel Vengeance From The Stars.
This novella details one of the final great battles on the homeworld of our heroes, the Din-no race, before they are forced to flee by the invading Destroyers (as covered in "Exodus..."). To best picture the Din-nos, imagine splicing together the DNA of Halo's Master Chief and Zootopia's Judy Hopps. In this world, names aren't given, they're earned, and the Battle of the Great Western Hall is where our hero, Captain Blazeward, will earn his.
Blood On The Stars is a sustained burst of kinetic action from start to finish, full of explosive set-pieces and breathless momentum. Amongst the explosions and fierce fighting, the author once again manages to give us protagonists we care about, stakes we can feel, and writing that soars from page to page.
"...in the absence of orders, a captain must make decisions, even if they cost him. To refuse was a decision in itself."
Highly recommend for fans of scifi fantasy or military scifi like Warhammer or Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers.
I really enjoyed this story, in so few pages you get a real sense of character to the different leaders. The book felt like one big military sci-fi battle, filled with tactics, twists and turns that keep you on your toes! It expands on the previous novella well, and leaves the door open wide for the full novel coming soon! A definite recommend if you like sci-fi and battles 👀 The action never slows in this fast paced story!
Thank you to the author for sending an earc for a review!
Wow. Matt I love your writing and I am so invested in this Din-no story! Blazeward is such an incredible character and I’m so happy I got the story I asked for 😉
Set against a backdrop of interstellar conflict, the story leans heavily into the weight of leadership—every decision carrying consequences that ripples far beyond the battlefield.
Through Blazeward, we see exactly what that burden looks like, and even how he earned his name, adding a more personal, almost mythic edge to his character. everyone feels a little morally grey, shaped by the brutal world they’re surviving in
There’s also a strong emotional undercurrent beneath all the action. It’s not just about war in space—it’s about the cost of it. The choices, the consequences, and the way it changes Blazeward are explored in a way that hits harder than you might expect.
I got the change to read this arc novella, even though I did not read it before release, I’m still thankful for the opportunity.
I signed up for this arc because of the cover, it’s so cool! But I did find out, which I’m so grateful for, that war type of sci-fi is not for me. However, I do see that this is a great novella, with an impactful story.
You follow captain Blazeward and his geminus Flamewrath along the journey of how the got the names that they did. I also have no idea what the word geminus means but I just rolled with it 😂 It’s an action packed story, that will teach you to never give up. A great setup for the continuation of this series. Just sadly not a story that I can dive into.
If you do like these kind of stories, try this and I will guarantee that you will love it.
An enthralling read, Gill manages to create a uniquely novel setting in a saturated market that flows naturally from the characters and the narrative. Time is given over to explore the characters fully, something Black Library books often miss in their desire to charge headlong into exhastively drawn out action sequences. But Blood on the Stars doesn't lack in tension, drama, and conflict. Thrilling battles, devistating loss, heroic last stands, all are present - they are just given time to breath, and are broken up with the emotional toll exacted on our protagonists.
A carefully considered, enjoyable read from a budding author.
Again the author has such a great sense for writing battle scenes while always keeping the context of the characters emotions and motivations.
Blazeward and his cohort continue to be a great group to follow abs Blazeward is a character easy to root for though is clearly not without his flaws. Very excited to see where this goes with the full length novel.
If you’re a fan of military sci-fi, Warhammer 40K, or Star Wars books about soldiers fighting against stacked odds this series is for you!
A fresh sci-fi novella which is action packed and sets up for a stellar series! We are introduced to some great characters and some memorable action scenes. A true military sci-fi story. We're talking futuristic weaponry, aliens and explosions. Oh, and fire..lots of fire! Matthew Gill describes the action with incredible detail and packs a brilliant amount of build up story into these short pages which makes big promises of what is to come in the series!
Awesome novella that left me excited for more. The action was great, ramping up more and more. The end, especially the epilogue, had me excited for what is to come. I’m especially interesting in seeing the world building. Both how it expanded in the space adventures, and what is revealed about these firearm wielding rabbits.
I wish this book was longer and a little more in depth in the backstory. It’s a very short novella not even 100 pages. And it is packed with a lot of action, and even in that short amount of time you do get a good sense of the characters and their growth. Definitely interested in reading what comes next. Very good sci-fi battle story.
Blood on the Stars expands on the short story Exodus to the Stars. We learn about the battle and what a battle it was. How the names were earned was awesome!
This was a fantastic read, pacing was great and full of action! The story is really building on vengeance for losing their home world and excited to see how the story progresses!
A great read, thoroughly recommend Some warhammery vibes whilst being its own thing :) Looking forward to following Cptn Blazeward's story in future instalments!
Set in an action-packed last stand, the space opera novella Blood on the Stars delivers with both vivid imagery and high-stakes decisions as Captain Blazeward learns to strategize and live with the necessary sacrifices of war, to hold the line and protect his species from extinction.
Many thanks to Matthew Gill for the ARC! All thoughts, opinions, and critiques are my own.
(My review contains no spoilers.)
I very much enjoyed reading this second (prequel) novella, as we near the beginning of the UCEF series. It was fast-paced with well-written battle scenes and military strategy that kept me intrigued throughout. Cinematic in that I was right there amongst the desperation and heavy fire.
I was hoping for a bit more rumination and emotional processing — explorations into the grief that follows the losses of war and a species potentially nearing extinction. Though overall, there was definitely an improvement in the writing compared to the first novella.
Looking forward to Gill’s continued growth into the first novel of the UCEF series, as well as the continuation of this original and compelling universe!
The space-faring bunny warriors return for another adventure. Sounds unusual? It absolutely is, and honestly, that is part of the charm. Blood on the Stars by Matthew Gill is a short but engaging military sci-fi story that delivers a fast, action-packed journey through space.
The story follows Captain Blazeward, who suddenly finds himself facing a crisis that threatens not only his mission but also the survival of his people. We witness the early stages of the war between the Din-no and the Destroyers, a conflict that begins to shape him as both a soldier and a leader. What I appreciated most is that he is not portrayed as a flawless hero. He carries the consequences of past decisions and feels the heavy responsibility of command, learning that his choices affect not only himself but everyone around him. This adds an emotional depth that elevates the story beyond typical space combat.
The narrative is filled with tense combat scenes and high stakes, giving the story the feel of a cinematic space adventure. The danger feels real and the sense of urgency keeps the plot moving quickly, while the crew around Blazeward brings personality and warmth to the story through their interactions, which nicely balance the intensity of the battles. Because of the novella length, the plot moves at a brisk pace and some elements could have been explored in greater detail. A little more time spent on the characters or the world might have made the emotional moments even stronger. Still, the story works well as a fast and entertaining introduction to what feels like a bigger saga.
Overall, Blood on the Stars is an enjoyable military sci-fi adventure with action, strong stakes and likeable characters. It is the kind of story that can easily appeal to both younger and adult readers who enjoy space battles and heroic journeys.
Verdict: A quick, action-packed space adventure with a strong emotional core and promising world-building. A fun read that leaves you curious to see where the story will go next.
Many thanks to Matthew for the eARC of this novella! I really enjoyed reading it and appreciated the opportunity to experience it early.
Blood on the Stars begins immediately after Exodus to the Stars, but provides enough information and understanding to jump directly into this story.
After establishing current events, the story switches to the past, telling of a desperate defense of the Warren, a major Din-no city, in which Blazeward and his geminus, Flamewrath, earned their names -- as most of their people only have designations.
While it was one major battle, the story is told as waves hit. Between waves, they have chances to reorganize and plan. Despite the characters having numbers rather than names, I was able to keep it straight, even through my dyslexia, so good job on that. I did not realize, for quite a while, that the letter in each designation was tied to that person's military unit.
I also liked the leadership theme, with the contrast between logic and heart, and felt that arc was done well.
The story is very direct, with dialogue being on-the-nose. It doesn't provide a feeling of more going on, just the current events. I've decided that the Din-no people are just blunt and honest, much more open and unguarded than humans; but that perception would crumble if another group behaves the same. (Then it would shift to author inexperience. So I suppose the jury is out on that.)
Because the story wears everything on its sleeve, and also repeats metaphor type, I would have to say this story could improve its prose. I feel the story structure is strong.
I was left with questions I want answered, and I hope later installments will answer them.
Thoughts: If you're into: ✅Space ✅Military Sci-fi ✅Red Rising, Starship Troopers, Warhammer. ✅Aliens Then I think this book is for you!
Characters: For the Main Character Captain Blazeward he reminded me heavily on the MC of the movie "Starship Troopers" called Rico. The consequences of his actions, the deaths of his comrades, leaving friends behind, fighting and losing. It showed his struggles as a leader and the decisions he had to make despite such decisions possibly hurting others around him.
Pacing: It's very fast paced, from chapter 2 onwards it's filled with action and drama, fighting galore which is my shtick so I loved it. I would say I was confused with the terms and names, everything was just thrust forward towards me and I didn't know what to do with such information. Kind of wish that in the future there will be a sort of character log or a dictionary for the terms and characters.
Ending: Since this is a prequel I would say it was a solid ending and a stepping stone for the future story, which I haven't read but I totally wish I have. I won't spoil anything obviously but if you want to read this before the first book I would say go ahead, I don't think it's too confusing and I don't think you'd need much context to read the story since it's pretty much explained throughout.
•Now THIS is what my brother would love to read, I might save up for a copy. Special thanks to the author for sending me an ARC, loved it sm :>
Blood on the Stars didn’t just meet my expectations… it detonated them.
After Exodus to the Stars, I was already locked onto Captain Blazeward like a gravity well I couldn’t escape. That novella planted the obsession. This one? It feeds it! Fueling every question, every curiosity, every desperate need to understand the man behind the legend.
Blazeward is not just a character. He’s a force. Scarred, complex, carrying a presence that bleeds through every page. The weight of his name, something so rare in a world built on numbers, hits even harder here. You don’t just read his story… you feel it pressing against your chest.
Matthew Gill doesn’t write worlds, he flat out ignites them. The scale, the emotion, the sheer intensity of what’s unfolding here is staggering. Every moment feels purposeful, every line sharpened to cut deep. There’s a rawness to the storytelling that refuses to let you stay comfortable, and that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable.
This isn’t just a continuation. It’s a deepening. The stakes climb higher, the emotional punches land harder, and the connection to these characters becomes something almost personal.
I came into this already hooked.
Now? I’m completely owned by this universe.
If you haven’t started with Exodus to the Stars, fix that immediately. Then come here, and be ready. Because Blood on the Stars doesn’t just deliver…
This novella is a quick read that hits hard! The story is framed as Captain Blazeward telling his comrade how he earned his name, with most of the book telling the story of past combat against invading aliens. It was a great way to get more background on these characters and more worldbuilding under our belt!
The story is a military sci fi that has a real authentic feel to it, with unexpected rabbit-like aliens as the main characters. The worldbuilding is fascinating, and often went in interesting directions I didn't consider, with some elements that feel almost like science-magic mixed in with the harder military sci fi backdrop. The plot sets our protagonists against near-hopeless odds, which is when heroism has the chance to take root. We not only see dire combat, but also a lot of heart, some clever strategy, and strong comaraderie.
I think my favorite part of this story is that the characters are as much of a focus as the plot. I think it can be easy in military sci fi for the characters to be eaten up by the focus on plot - but not here! We really get to know not only Captain Blazeward, but the rest of his crew as well, and interpersonal conflict and resolution is as much a part of the story as military action.
Overall, if you like character-based military sci fi with interesting worldbuilding that you can read in a couple hours, I definitely recommend this one!
Thanks to the author for sharing an early ARC copy for me to read and review.
A most enjoyable and action-packed scifi romp in the tradition of Harry Harrison, Tim Zahn, Alan Dean Foster and more recently the 4HU mil-sf books plus author Michael Lasco.
This felt like YA that straddles the line to bring in adult readers and does that well. Non-human characters are a plus throughout this including some nifty genetic/spiritual/cultural points-of-difference.
At under an hour’s read on Kindle, this book is too short to be a novella, and is more properly placed as a “novelette”. Meaning it’s mercifully short and punchy in the age of 600-page epics. Perfect for a commute or for bedtime reading.
My only gripe was how tough it was to focus on alphanumerical “names” for creatures (e.g. B31) for an entire story, but I get why this is the way it is and you do get used to it.
Terrific debut! I received an ARC of the book and I'm leaving this review of my own volition and with my own opinion.
Blood on the Stars is a dramatic, fast-paced military sci-fi novella following Captain Blazeward and his soldiers as they make a daring last stand defending their home. The battles are brutal, and the reader is right in the action. We get moments to breathe when the characters do, and in those moments, the story deepens the relationship between Blazeward and his soldiers, which provides a nice counterbalance to the fighting. My favourite aspect was seeing the pressure Blazeward feels as a leader, the tension between his heart and his head, his orders and the realities of the situation.
If you like action-packed military stories, this is for you, but it would also make a good read for someone wanting to try military sci-fi for the first time. The short length and the fact that it's the start of a new universe make it a good place to dip your toe in.
Blood on the Stars is a novelle, so shorter than your average novel. While shorter, Matt doesn’t skimp on the important stuff however: there is character building, internal conflict and also some big external conflict.
The Main Character Blazeward and his team are at war with the appropriately named Destroyers. The story is intense, but it’s mostly about the main characters and their choices.
Choices are hard, especially when in conflict. Let alone when the conflict will have effect on your entire world. I think Matt does an excellent job in creating such a vivid scene within the less-than-average number of pages.
It’s exciting, you care about the MC plus there is some fun, well worked out tech in Blood on the Stars.
I recommend this book to scifi lovers, conflict chasers and people who just want a good short read.
Really fun ride that kept me hooked from start to finish. The action scenes were exciting, inventive and easy to follow, and there is a strong sense of danger throughout that adds tension. I especially liked the atmosphere in the warren tunnels and the stark differences between the Din-Nos and the Destroyers. There is a constant feeling of dread, balanced with moments of individual courage and heroism that make the characters stand out. The setting is engaging and feels bigger than what we see here, which made me curious about what comes next.
Short but exciting opening to the story of Captain Blazeward. It definitely feels like the start of a larger story, and I would love to see a sequel.
If you thought Exodus To The Stars set a high bar, Blood On The Stars clears it with room to spare! Matthew Gill has taken the foundational promise of the first story and really amped up the intensity. It isn't just about the action, Gill makes this story hit home by adding so many more layers to Blazeward's character which makes every one of his decisions and sacrifices hit that much harder.
Obviously the standout for me was the Battle of the Great Western Hall. I've been waiting to see this conflict play out since it was mentioned in book 1, and it did not disappoint. It has everything I look for in military sci-fi: inventive tactical moves and countermoves, desperate leadership under fire, and those perfect little hints strewn throughout that point toward a massive eventual payoff. The action is relentless, but it never sacrifices the emotional weight of the soldiers fighting desperately for all the right reasons.
This novella is the perfect build up to the full length story coming later this year. If you haven't started this series yet, fix that immediately!! Blood on the Stars delivers on every single promise and I am completely hooked.
What a ride. Blood on the Stars is an action packed, last stand story with a strong sense of duty and camaraderie. The worldbuilding feels real, vast and full of texture. It drops clues of what’s to come, some of which made me gasp, spiking my curiosity!
The characters shine, even through the action’s carnage. You’ll have to read to find out but you’ll feel the weight of command and the intense bonds of brotherhood. I absolute recommend reading and can’t wait to read the next book. The UCEF universe started with a trickle… but the dam is about to release a full epic strike! Revenge on the Destroyers!
Matt’s world isn’t just expanding—it’s transforming into an intricate world, and his skills as an author are growing right alongside it.
Matt is already heading toward the top of my favorite-writers list. The motivations of his characters feel lived-in, action sequences that hit with choreographed precision, and a world that layers it's lore without ever feeling like homework.
And nothing feels forced. The reveals about the Din-no civilization, for instance, never come at the expense of pulse-pounding tension. They land with the weight of earned payoff—the kind that rewards fans who’ve been paying attention while keeping newcomers hooked.
The fight scenes and military tactics were the strongest parts of this novella, and I loved those scenes!
Sci Fi worldbuilding can be tough in a novella, particularly if it's as intricate as this was. I felt the characters didn't come alive for me as much as they probably would in the author's head, and the worldbuilding felt heavy/ rushed at times. Prose also felt a little overdone, where it took too many words to convey what needed to be said.
Overall, a great first start for a new author and I'm glad he brought his world to life for us. I expect in a full length novel this world will have more time to come alive.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 “Names are not given, they are seized” Blood on the moon is a fun battle filled space odyssey and a hell of a journey. I mean who wouldn’t want to be aboard a Star-travelling vessel. Blazeward the captain faces the end of his world and does so along side some fun wisdom spitting characters. He also carries the weight of his decisions and earns the respect of those aboard his vessel. This book would appeal to all age groups teens to adults. It is a short book but you will definitely enjoy the ride. Thank you for sharing your book with me.
my rating is 4.25 This nonstop, action filled novella was a fun ride. Surprising to me was the amount of heart shown too. Our main character, B30 also known as Captain Blazeward, leads a last ditch effort to save the Warren and protect the citizens within. He is clever and strong, yet has a soft heart. The captain shows himself to be a great leader, despite being thrown into the role during battle. The enemy, who are almost untouchable will be his greatest challenge. So good!
Blood on the Stars builds on the events of Exodus to the Stars, and gives us a flashback to the events that precedes Exodus to the Stars.
In Blood on the Stars, we learn how Blazeward and Flamewrath earned their names, and hooo boi it's quite the story! It's tense and gripping, brimming with battles against possible odds and desperate decisions made on the brink of total annhilation - everything you could possibly want from a military scifi novella.
Can't wait for the next one!
Perfect for fans of Horus Heresy, Halo and Gears of War.
This was a great read. If you are looking for a quick fix to a heroes save the day or some guardians of the galaxy mid battle scene vibes then this is absolutely for you. It’s a great, nice short novella to the UCEF world and will have you hooked from the get go. I’m definitely intrigued and want to read more from this world when I get a chance. Definitely recommend giving it a go, all you sci-fi lovers are going to fly through this one.
I had the pleasure of reading the ARC of Gill's Blood on the Stars, a novella set in Universe of UCEF.
Blood on the Stars is a fast-paced action tale with grit, blood, and choices that will have a lasting impact. It builds on what Gill did in his short story, Exodus to the Stars, and we gain an even deeper understanding of Blazeward and the Din-nos, and the plight they've faced. "Names are not given. They are seized." is incredibly fitting and to see how Blazeward earned his name (and Flamewrath!) was rewarding.
When I read Exodus to the Stars, Gill's short story, it had left me wanting more, and that's exactly what I got with Blood on the Stars!
