A Sea So Cruel
Missing villagers. An overcrowded orphanage. An unwanted betrothal.
The seaside kingdom of Salendron knows despair well, and Princess Asta is the only one working to protect it. Outraged by her father’s disregard, Asta begins investigating her townfolks’ disappearances. I love a good standalone, but this one put me in that rare grey area where I’m thrilled to know how everything ends… and also wishing for a full series so I could stay with these characters longer.
This story swept me away from page one. It blends royalty, siren lore, fae magic, and ocean‑deep secrets into a world that feels both haunting and irresistible. I was hooked immediately—asking questions, side‑eyeing characters, and trying (unsuccessfully) to predict where Stacey Foss was taking me.
Kaid is a sharp‑tongued Lord on the brink of becoming a prince, forced to confront the end of his carefree lifestyle if he wants to be the leader his realm needs. Princess Asta is blunt, guarded, and fiercely protective of her kingdom, and her character growth is one of the highlights of the book. Their tension is thick, but the real magic lies in the layers: Kaid’s jealousy, his strange immunity to the siren song, the mysteries surrounding his mother, and the way every answer only leads to more questions.
The reveals are wild—finfolk bloodlines, fae ancestry, hidden mothers, cloaked enemies, and betrayals I never saw coming. The battles on land and sea are cinematic, the merspecies are unique, and the inclusion of sign language is a thoughtful, beautiful touch. And when everything finally comes together? I was devastated, emotional, and completely obsessed.
This is a fantastic story—full of twists, heartbreak, and a powerful message about harmony, identity, and choosing who you want to be. I didn’t want it to end.

I absolutely LOVED this book 😭🌊✨
From the very first page, I was hooked. This was one of those books where I kept telling myself, "okay, just one more chapter," and then suddenly hours had passed.
One of my favorite things about it was the nostalgic feeling it gave me. It isn't a retelling, but it definitely has some Little Mermaid-esque vibes that immediately pulled me in and made me fall in love with the story.
And honestly? As a water sign, anything involving the ocean already has an advantage with me ☠️🌊
But this book offered soooooo much more than that.
The folklore was fascinating, the banter was fun, the romance was engaging, and the emotional moments made me incredibly attached to the characters. By the end, I genuinely wasn't ready for the story to be over.
I wanted to stay in this world longer.
Recently I've discovered how much I love fantasy stories centered around the sea, folklore, and magic, and this book reminded me exactly why.
This was an easy 5 star read for me and I absolutely recommend it.

This story was a good time. I knew I wanted to read this when I saw the trope he’s the damsel in distress. I love the Little Mermiad vibes and elements, without it being a direct retell (though I do love retells).
The first half of the book really drew me in, in terms of Zaid and Asta their banter was top teir and the yearning that was speckled in was great.
The second part of the book once the main couples were together moved pretty quickly but Asta was a little too back and forth me. She made this life alternating choice to save him but then wasn’t sure if he was serous about her. That didn’t 1000% track for me.
The book has spice but has alternate chapters available.
I do think one of the best parts about this book was the mental health/ocd rep.
Maren- I didn’t see that twist at the end coming - which is always enjoyable.
Overall fun book!

The story has decent bones but it would benefit from more editing. I felt like there was a confused sense of place and time, with too much modern wording to fit the fantasy setting. Phrases like someone being called problematic or discussing “dating histories” felt really out of place. I also think there was too much tell not show and that big moments were often skipped over. Linnea and Halsten felt really rushed as a result. I understand that Foss set out to make this a women-led story but I think she overcorrected with Kaid and left him too much of a damsel in distress. I would have liked to see him and Asta be more equals. Foss gets points for a unique story though, and it was fun to read a fantasy book that focused on sirens and sea folk.

Would 12/10 recommend this book! Between the characters and their development, the magic system, and all the small details in this book it made me fall in love immediately. I never wanted to put it down, the writing kept me so engaged!

I first discovered A Sea So Cruel while asking for mermaid book recommendations, and I'm so glad it ended up on my reading list. This was such an immersive fantasy romance. The seaside setting was beautifully written, creating an atmosphere that felt both magical and mysterious. Stacey did a wonderful job introducing the fantasy elements without overwhelming the reader, allowing the world to unfold naturally while keeping the central mystery engaging from beginning to end.
Asta was an easy protagonist to root for. She genuinely cares about her family and her people, and I appreciated that her determination never felt forced or overly self-righteous. Her dynamic with Kaid was another highlight. Their relationship develops gradually through shared experiences, making their growing trust and chemistry feel natural and earned. I also loved the thoughtful inclusion of sign language, which added another layer of heart to the story.
The supporting cast was equally memorable, especially Linnea and Halsten, whose relationship completely won me over. I only wish some of the point-of-view transitions had been a little smoother, and I felt the final conflict and its aftermath could have benefited from a bit more room to breathe.
Despite those minor issues, this was an easy five-star read for me. As someone who will happily pick up anything involving mermaids, this absolutely delivered. It balanced fantasy, romance, mystery, and emotion so well that I found myself completely invested from beginning to end.
If you enjoy fantasy romances with atmospheric worldbuilding, slow-burn romance, engaging mysteries, and a touch of Disney-inspired magic, I highly recommend giving A Sea So Cruel a try.

This was a fun Little Mermaid-inspired romantasy (not a retelling!!!)
I was sucked in very early into the book and honestly if all romantasy authors could take note on how Foss writes her spicy scenes, we’d ALL benefit. Probably the best ones I’ve read to date ~ AND if you don’t enjoy spice, she offers “alternate” chapters with considerably tamer versions of the same scenes to allow for the story/character development that occurs in the scenes to be accessible to everyone, which I think is a really, really cool little plus. And while in real life I’d probably punch someone for doing it, the negging banter from both our MCs was so much frickin fun lmao I adored their begrudged pairing from the get. A+ love it. Foss is also adept at planting little red herrings among her foreshadowing, which keeps it fun.
Now for the critique portion:
Most of my qualms have to do with pacing, especially in the latter half. The final two battle scenes lost me a bit, and the emotional impact of some of the events therein did not hit for me in the way I think was intended as a result, and I felt like we had a lot of buildup for the payoff we received, if that makes sense?
There was a bit of “tell not show” peppered throughout, but it wasn’t so glaring that I couldn’t look past it, with really only the exception of that final battle.
As far as relationship development goes, they felt pretty on-par with most romantasy books. A little fast, a LOT of (great!) banter, some kinda eye-roll-y mercurialness (totally cool with him one minute, SUPER angry and aloof the next with little warning…poor Kaid lol) mostly from our FMC which didn’t land with ME but I know some readers adore that approach! I won’t yuck your yum if that’s your thing! It’s just not mine.
Overall I enjoyed it. I am curious how this will expand out into a series, perhaps following the folks in the mountain (?), as the ending was pretty tied-in-a-bow neat.

I was hooked from page one! Honestly this was such a good read! Just filled with mystery, quests, secrets, growing love, friendship, and what it means to be family.
Asta, the FMC, spends her time actively trying to avoid Kaid, the MMC when he comes to be engaged to her sister Maren. Giggle worthy banter ensues and their chemistry is just so good! I really love Asta too because while she does struggle with her rituals, the author does not sweep it under the rug or make her seem less strong because of them. Asta is a bad*ss, who wields knives and can hold her own.
Kaid, while a womanizer in the past....he's such a walking green flag once he meets Asta. He's just enthralled and he just doesn't know why. I loved the banter, and Kaid just takes things in stride. And he absolutely is not opposed to Asta rescuing him, he's just all for her being her bad*ss self.
Now we get into the side characters, Linnea and Halsten!!! These two honestly are adorable and need to be protected at all costs. I really loved that they got to have their swoon worthy moments. Linnea has such a heart wrenching back story and when Halsted hears of it, all he wants to do is support her and he's just obsessed with all sides of her. I fell in love with these two and would not be opposed to having bonus/extra chapters just about them!
Of course the rest of the supporting characters throughout the story helped deepen the story and I just loved them. I really just enjoyed this story with all the plot twists and the ending was just lovely.

While it isn’t a re-telling, it definitely has Little Mermaid-esque but in reverse vibes. Asta is the fierce sister, second daughter of the king of the seaside kingdom Salendron. Her half sister Maren is in an arranged marriage to Kaid, the son of a Duke with a bad reputation. She instantly hates him. He is instantly interested in the only woman who can seem to resist his charms.
The story is a fun read. We get banter, chemistry and yearning sprinkled in the whole first half. We get betrayal and quite a few twist in the plot. We get the history and folklore of sirens (products of fae and Finfolk) at war with their ancestors the Finfolk in a battle to rule the world. Selkies, kelpies and fae also make their appearances. We get a search for artifacts, and the adventures that take them there.
The side characters (Linnea, Halsten, Gyrial, the twins Liva and Tova) are all interesting and keep the story feeling full. The loyalty between the main group of characters is admirable to watch as they are all ready to do what needs to be done for each other. The second half leans into the battle and the action really takes off. We also get a HEA which is always a plus for me.

The settings for this story were so cool. I really like how well they are described and how you can kind of feel the weather and the smell of the sea and and the rough journeys that the characters are taking. The setting is what originally drew me to the book so I was really pleased when Foss took her time to describe the castle and ocean.
As for the story itself, the first half of this book was so strong! I was immediately drawn into the world (if it wasn't apparent from the previous paragraph) and was very intrigued with the budding relationship between Asta and Kaid. I loved the mystery of what's happening to the townspeople, all the new characters, the scene in the music room... The entire setup to the second part of the book was just really well done and established.
The strongest element of the book by far are the characters. Kaid and Asta are both interesting main characters, but for me, the side characters were so much more fascinating. My favorite by far was Maren, who I desperately needed more of by the end of the book. I wish we'd had a bit more exploration into some of her decisions by the end of the book. Linnea was another standout. I liked the depiction of her facing her abuser and becoming more confident in herself.
My criticisms for this book are pretty minimal. My two biggest issues were the exposition dumps and the final battle. The exposition dumps weren't too frequent and I understand in a 400+ page story, it might be difficult to efficiently add information without just dumping it all at once. As for the final battle, I got a bit lost in what was happening. I don't know if it was just too much or not enough, but it was difficult to keep track of who was where (there are two main locations the battle is taking place) and some of the developments with Maren muddied things a little bit.
Overall, this book was really enjoyable! I think it'd be suitable for new adults and the blend of fantasy and romance felt quite balanced. People who like romantasy should definitely put this book on their summer list!

I had a great time with this book. The ocean world and the castle setting felt super vivid, and I loved how the author blended sirens, selkies, and fae into the lore without it feeling messy or overwhelming.
The first half was definitely my favorite-the pacing was spot-on, full of mystery, cool quests, and tons of romantic tension. Also, can we talk about the alternate chapters with the tamer versions of the spicy scenes? That is honestly brilliant. It’s so nice that readers who prefer clean romance can still get the exact same story and character growth without the explicit stuff.
The multi-POV format worked really well here, too. I loved watching the characters work through their trauma, and the FMC is just fantastic-strong, protective, and super relatable. Plus, the family dynamics and chaotic friendships balanced out the heavier emotional moments perfectly.
My only real gripe is that the second half slowed down quite a bit. The plot got really intricate and detailed, and by the time we hit the final battle, there were almost too many moving parts. It got a little tough to track the layout of everything happening during the epic showdown.
Still, if you love a good fantasy romance, I highly recommend giving this one a shot!

The multi-POV format worked really well here, too. I loved watching the characters work through their trauma, and the FMC is just fantastic-strong, protective, and super relatable. Plus, the family dynamics and chaotic friendships balanced out the heavier emotional moments perfectly.
My only real gripe is that the second half slowed down quite a bit. The plot got really intricate and detailed, and by the time we hit the final battle, there were almost too many moving parts. It got a little tough to track the layout of everything happening during the epic showdown.
Still, if you love a good fantasy romance, I highly recommend giving this one a shot!

My thoughts, the little mermaid has always been my favorite Disney movie… this book was awesome! It brought be down into the water with mermaids!! Love that!! I love how Asta, the FMC is a total bad ass with some OCD tendencies. I feel the spice level was very minimal and the book focused more on the plot. I was engrossed in the story from the very beginning and couldn’t wait to see how it ended!! There are a few alternate chapters with the spice level even less.
My first experience with a novel involving mermaids and I’m an instant fan! I absolutely loved this book!! If the author writes more… I will read more!!

I went into this intrigued, and it very quickly pulled me in.
There’s this constant feeling that something isn’t quite right, and I loved how the story slowly builds on that through its ocean folklore and unfolding mysteries. It kept me questioning everything and genuinely excited to see where it was going.
Asta was such a standout for me. She felt grounded and real, and watching her world shift around her made the story even more engaging. The tension and relationships were also done really well, balancing emotional moments with just enough chaos to keep things interesting.
Overall, this was such a fun, immersive read with strong tension and a lot of intrigue. If you enjoy fantasy with ocean mythology, layered characters, and a story that keeps you guessing, this is definitely one to have on your radar

I was immediately hooked, loved the setting and the characters. Great world building. There's sirens, there's finfolks, there's fae. There's secrets buried deeper than the Mariana Trench.
Kaid and Asta were great to follow, they're banter was hilarious. I love how Asta is smart - she doesn't just react, she thinks things through. She's strong and fierce because she trains. Kaid starts off your typical lazy prince character, but he doesn't stay that way for long. His growth is great.
If you're looking for a fantasy that blends existing lore with a whole new world under the sea, you'll love this book.

What a delight this book was, I am fascinated by the creatures of the sea in books becuase authors usually take to a new level. This one was no expectation, it had merfolk, kelpies, sea dragons and many more. But can we also talk about the amazing 4 legs companion? 🐕 love him! This book will have you at the edge of your seat start to finish, the story has many twist and turns some you might not even expect. But when I tell you that I didn't know where to go after finishing, it was that good. This author's writing was very well done, the characrers where done perfectly to fit with one a other (the good and the bad 🫣), the world building was great it was like I was seeing it play in my head. For sure, add to your tbr♥︎

A Sea So Cruel was divided into 2 main parts. the first half (part 1) was excellent, a solid ⭐ 4-5 stars. Perfectly paced, wonderful world building, banter, passion.
However, the second half (part 2) was a little slow.. and I honestly got a bit lost at times. I personally find it hard when books go back and forth between characters and scenes. It created a bit of choppiness/plot holes.
Overall, I would rate this book ~3.75/4 stars. Excellent plot & characters... a great read if you love finfolk folklore & character growth.

great plot, great characters, perfect hint of spice
This was really fantastic. Asta and Kaid’s first meeting was kind of iconic to be honest but I really didn’t understand why she hated Kaid so much when they’d never even met. It ended up setting the stage for the perfect type of tension between them which I loved. There’s a couple twists that had my jaw on the floor. The spice was great but there’s also alternate chapters available if you’d rather read a less spicy version. Halsten and Linnea were honestly scene-stealers, their chapters were some of my favorites. The Little Mermaid parallels were amazing and I loved this take on it. There’s a really satisfying ending and overall this was a wonderful read.

This book had me on the edge the whole time. From the start I wanted to punch Kaid due to his smugness but towards then end I actually felt for the poor guy. This had such a great tie in to Little Mermaid but gave such much of a deeper dive into sirens. After I read this book it actually led me to do more research on sirens because I loved it so much! I absolutely love how the author has alternate chapters depending on your level of spice you like so everyone can be included! World building was superb because throughout I could easily envision the world she was describing along with the story itself which I love for any book I’m reading. Would love if this was a series so I could stay with the characters because they were super enjoyable.

Review: THIS BOOK was so gripping with the wild (in a good way) world-building! Kaid and Asta’s character growth was some of the BEST I’ve read in a hot minute. Their banter was great and had me smiling several times, and while Asta was awesome to me right off the bat, Kaid did grow on me (and I didn’t think he would). The plot had SO many twists that were all pretty awesome. Dyri was my favorite from the start and still is. Overall, this was a wild action pacted fantsy romance that I thoroughly enjoyed!

This book was a very solid standalone fantasy novel. The world building was so wonderful that I almost felt like I was watching a movie in head. I loved the folklore inspiration and how it was a darker fairytale in the best possible way. The character arcs were well designed and I was invested in most of them.
The magic system was intentionally open ended, but I did want a little more explanation on some elements of it. The ending felt slightly rushed, but I imagine it’s tricky to pull everything together in a one off fantasy novel. This was a bit on the spicy side for me but the alternative chapters were a nice touch.
I’m excited to read more from Stephanie Foss, and I think she would do well with a duology or a trilogy.

Remember that scene in Peter Pan when Wendy calls the mermaids sweet and Peter says they'll sweetly drown you if you get too close? Thats the vibe of this book.

This is my first finfolk fantasy and I enjoyed it a lot! I would say it’s like a darker spin on the little mermaid- not to be mistaken as a retelling though!
The secrets, twists, mysteries and the revelations of how people were connected just kept building throughout the book. Definitely keeps you on your toes! I love Asta, she is strong, determined and doesn’t take shit from anyone and also is willing to do anything for the people she loves! Linnea really surprised me - in a good way! I felt like I got to watch her grow as a person and be the woman she was really destined to be! Ugh i think Halsten is my fav though!

This magical mermaid tale started out great, and has some unique world building and a very diverse cast of characters, however the pacing of the second half of the book threw me off some. Especially the last couple battle scenes, which were difficult to follow at times.
The spicy scenes were well written, and bonus points to Foss for giving alternate chapters if spice isn't your thing.
Overall it was an enjoyable read, with a nice blend of fantasy, interesting magical abilities and romance that would make a nice summer beach read.

Inspired by The Little Mermaid, but definitely with more violence, grit, and spice. A Sea So Cruel creates a world with tension, mystery, and overall I think it delivers.
Multiple POVs, yearning, banter - definitely done very well. I had some difficulty with the battle scenes and pacing in the second half, but the banter and longing really got me through it. As well as the first half setting up the plot so well.
I would read more from Foss, and more set in this world, which is why I rated four stars. It was really a fun ride and I would recommend if you enjoy Brothers Grimm type fairytales, and not the Disney ones.

I loved this book! The characters and story line were different from what I’ve read before and thoroughly enjoyed. This story was about discovery, acceptance, and realizing reality was not as it seemed. It would be crazy to discover sirens and finfolk were actually real.
The reader is discovering not only what the folklore and myths are but that they are based off of truth. The characters discover who they are and what they can be capable of. Reality as they know is distorted and turned into something else.
The storyline pacing is well thought out, banter is amazing to read, and the twists kept me wanting to read more. Definitely recommend this book!

This book was really a fun read. The spice level was accurate and the author does offer alternative chapters for that. I loved the lore and the blending of sea creatures and mythological creatures. A really good example of changing things up! The story was unique and intriguing. The banter between Kaid and Asta was perfect and I got such a sense of satisfaction with Linnea’s character growth. If you enjoy sea monsters, mythology, strong FMCs, this book is perfect for you. Well written and a great time

I am still in the process of reading this book but it is hands down one of my most favorite reads. If you are a fan of folklore/mythology and the monarchy archetype, this book will satisfy that itch with sprinkles of romance! You are given the option to read some chapters without sexual content as well which is really nice for the people who don’t get into that sort of thing. It is packed with action and so many mysteries to keep you wanting more. I highly recommend this book! I honestly see this being worthy of a movie adaptation.

It was energizing and the plot twist I was SO not expecting, I spent a few late nights with this one cause I just could not put it down unless forced when I went to work lol I loved the romance and the spiciness, and there are alternate chapters that are less spicy for those who might not be interested! I highly enjoyed this one!!

I was hooked from beginning to end, my only regret was that I finished it in one sitting. I'm glad that Maren character wasn't what I thought because at first I disliked her. But people would do anything for love. Also, while reading, it kind of reminded me of the the Little Mermaid but in reverse. I hope there is going to be more because seeing that Asta and Kaid started a family of their own cannot be the end.
