Over moraliteit

Durkheim ziet de moraal als iets wat zich binnen de natuurlijke wereld bevindt en wat wetenschappelijk onderzocht kan worden. In Over moraliteit, een bundeling van teksten geschreven tussen 1906 en 1920, zet Émile Durkheim zijn idee van moraliteit als sociaal feit uiteen. Over moraliteit is een sleuteltekst in het oeuvre van Durkheim en biedt een uitstekende inleiding in zijn nog steeds
relevante denken.

Émile Durkheim (1858-1917) was hoogleraar aan de Sorbonne te Parijs. Hij wordt samen met Max Weber en Karl Marx beschouwd als grondlegger van de moderne sociologie.

About the author

Much of Durkheim's work was concerned with how societies could maintain their integrity and coherence in modernity; an era in which traditional social and religious ties are no longer assumed, and in which new social institutions have come into being. His first major sociological work was The Division of Labor in Society (1893). In 1895, he published his Rules of the Sociological Method and set up the first European department of sociology, becoming France's first professor of sociology.

In 1896, he established the journal L'Année Sociologique. Durkheim's seminal monograph, Suicide (1897), a study of suicide rates amongst Catholic and Protestant populations, pioneered modern social research and served to distinguish social science from psychology and political philosophy. The Elementary Forms of Religious Life (1912), presented a theory of religion, comparing the social and cultural lives of aboriginal and modern societies.

Durkheim was also deeply preoccupied with the acceptance of sociology as a legitimate science. He refined the positivism originally set forth by Auguste Comte, promoting what could be considered as a form of epistemological realism, as well as the use of the hypothetico-deductive model in social science. For him, sociology was the science of institutions,[citation needed] its aim being to discover structural social facts. Durkheim was a major proponent of structural functionalism, a foundational perspective in both sociology and anthropology. In his view, social science should be purely holistic; that is, sociology should study phenomena attributed to society at large, rather than being limited to the specific actions of individuals.

He remained a dominant force in French intellectual life until his death in 1917, presenting numerous lectures and published works on a variety of topics, including the sociology of knowledge, morality, social stratification, religion, law, education, and deviance. Durkheimian terms such as "collective consciousness" have since entered the popular lexicon.

Met een geweldig duidelijke en interessante (en toch ook wel lang (wel 50 blz lang)) introductie van Rudi Learmans over het werk van Durkheim en zijn benadering tot deze essays las ik dit boek.

Durkheim heb ik al vanaf dag 1 al interessant gevonden en alle samenvattingen die ik van zijn werk kon vinden zijn uiterst interessant want 1 hij bekijkt de leer sociologie uit een hele andere hoek (de kant van de natuurkundige of de bioloog in plaats van de kant van een psycholoog of theoloog) die fundamenteel anders was dan de hoek van Marx die een visie had en heel gevoelmatig te werk ging. 2 Zijn geconstateerde ideeën en theorie zijn belachelijk interessant en zijn idee over het feit dat de samenleving "opdrachten" geeft aan individuen in plaats van vice versa is een hele interessante benadering tot sociologische kwestie en compleet anders dan Webers idee erover.

In dit boekje vertelt Durkheim iets over het moraal en hoe het de samenleving is die als een soort God de plichten afgeeft aan de individuen maar alsnog langzaam evolueert over tijd . Dit is een interessant idee maar het gammelt nog wel kwa inhoud en onderbouwing, hij is beschrijft de samenleving en het individue als 2 compleet gescheiden dingen zonder dat er ook maar iets tussen die 2 schalen staat wat zorgt voor een vreemde (en naar mijn mening foutieve) constatering. In mijn idee zitten er genoeg dingen tussen de samenleving en het individue die onbesproken blijft (kleine collectieven) en hij kijkt ook compleet over het conformisme wat toch wel veel te doen heeft met moraliteit maar misschien komt dat ook omdat hij nooit zijn boek erover kon maken/afmaken. Ik vond zijn 2de essay naar mijn mening interessanter en beter onderbouwd dan zijn 1ste maar dat komt waarschijnlijk door de tijd die er tussen de 2 zitten.

Goed boek zou m zeker aanraden!
