Guarded in Darkness

Rate this book
He was sent to protect her until he could eliminate her. Then she became the one person he couldn’t destroy.

Aria Connors thought losing her fiancé was the worst thing she would ever survive. Then come the gifts. The warnings. The feeling that someone is watching her while she sleeps. Until a masked stranger starts haunting the edges of her life—first as a presence in the shadows, then as a faceless voice, then as the man who seems to understand the most broken parts of her. The deeper Aria falls, the harder it becomes to tell danger from desire.

Ren is the Triads’ most feared weapon—a silent assassin known as the god of death. He was given one job: keep Aria alive until a key is recovered…then kill her. But Ren has spent his life obeying orders without hesitation. Aria was supposed to be a job. A problem. A means to an end. Instead, she gets under his skin, into his blood, and past every wall he’s ever built.

Now enemies are closing in, the secrets buried in Aria’s past are beginning to unravel, and the empire Ren serves will destroy them both before it lets them walk away. As betrayal, obsession, and desire collide, Ren will have to choose between the world that made him a monster…or the woman who makes him want to be a man.

Because in a world ruled by death, falling in love may be the most dangerous betrayal of all.

For fans of Peaky Blinders grit, Phantom of the Opera obsession, and Ocean’s Eleven schemes—with angst, spice, and sharp twists.

A year after tragically losing her fiancé, Aria Connors is still drowning in grief. So when Ren, her bestie’s former bodyguard, keeps finding reasons to show up in her ER at Chicago Memorial, she can’t help but be drawn to the quiet, enigmatic man despite knowing she’s nowhere near ready to move on.

Desperate for an outlet where she can say the things no one in her life would understand, Aria creates an anonymous profile on the TellNo1 app. There, she forms an unexpected connection with Ghostface444, who indulges the darker corners of her mind without judgment and gives her the freedom to simply feel.

Watching Aria navigate these relationships was fascinating because they each filled a different void. Ren quietly became the protector and caretaker she didn’t know she needed, while Ghostface444 gave her permission to embrace the parts of herself she’d kept buried. Neither relationship was simple, and both had me completely invested.

Ren is exactly the kind of morally questionable hero I eat up in fiction. Fiercely devoted, obsessively protective, and utterly unapologetic about the lengths he’ll go to for the people he loves. He’s equal parts predator and protector, ruthless everywhere except where Aria is concerned. The hunger. The yearning. The restraint. The man had me in an absolute chokehold.

Of course, nothing is ever that simple. As the Chinese Triads’ most lethal assassin, Ren has been handed an impossible choice: recover something Aria doesn’t even know she possesses to secure a life-saving heart transplant for his sister… then kill her. Knowing what’s hanging over every interaction between them made the slow burn almost unbearable.

Guarded in Darkness is packed with twists that kept sending me back to reevaluate everything I thought I knew. Every revelation peeled back another layer, and I loved that the story never took the predictable path.

I’m thoroughly invested in this series and already impatient for whatever comes next.

I’m gonna start off by saying there was multiple aspects of this book I did enjoy, such as the representation for ASL users and even the grief associated with the passing of a s/o. This book really had me locked in 60% through… then it started to lose me lol I feel like this story could have been cut in half and then I wouldn’t have gotten bored
Overall it was cute, not the worst but also not the best

Guarded In Darkness is the 2nd book in the Antihero Syndicate series, which follows a group that has come together to bring down The Association at all costs. I was so excited for this one after we were introduced to Ren in the previous book. He captivated me from the start and I was immediately hooked on him and Aria.

Ren is a selectively mute assassin for the Triad's, but he is also part of the Antihero Syndicate. He is forced to be their killer because they keep his ailing sister under thumb. He will do anything they ask so they will help his sister get a heart replacement, until they order him to kill Aria. He has been obsessed with her since was her friend's bodyguard the previous year. He is determined to find the key the Triad's believe she has and keep her safe.

Aria has been dealing with grief since her fiancé was killed in the fallout from the previous book. She has been trying to move on and has built a friendship through an app with a stranger who she can be her true self with. Of course, she has no idea this is actually Ren.

Ren has been assigned to keep an eye on her, but he also sneaks into her place at night to keep her safe as his other persona. The chemistry between them was fire and I loved seeing Aria come back to life. Ren has multiple secrets that could break her heart. How will they get through the betrayal, secrets, and danger?

Ren completely stole my heart and Aria was the perfect match for him. I am obsessed with this series and I am loving each character in the Antihero Syndicate. I can't wait for Sofia's book next.

Thank you to Victoria Lum for providing the ARC.

𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩 - bodyguard romance, assassin x nurse, dark romance, found family, secret identity, mafia romance, masked man, secret society

From the ending of book one I knew this book was gonna be a banger and it absolutely was did I say there and read the whole thing and one sitting? Yes I did because the plot was plotting, every chapter was so good that I had just had to go to the next one. Plus these two are absolutely so good together.

Aria made such a good impression in book one that I couldn’t wait for her to be in this book, I knew my girl was gonna be sad. And she definitely was going through it, I just wanted to hug her so tight because she deserves the world and definitely didn’t deserve that plot twist that happened in this book. Aria being a nurse is just so her. She’s such a caring person and I just love that by her.

There are so many twist and turns in his book. It had my head freaking spinning, but it was definitely eating, and I definitely did stare at my wall for a few minutes a couple times. But seeing Ren and aria fall for each other was so worth it because you could just feel their love and know that they don’t play about each other.

Ren oh Ren I am so down bad for him, since book one because I just love a silent MMC. So my obsession grow for him more in this book It makes no sense. Once you get to know him and his secrets, your heart will definitely break a little mine definitely did. And the bond he share with his sister is so special. I love seeing it. But he definitely kept me on my toes plus I just love his unhinged group of friends.

Aria and Ren are so perfect for each other. Their chemistry banter was just so good. They had me going through all type of emotions I just love them so much. This series just keeps getting better and better and I can’t wait for more especially the next book. I know I’m gonna eat that one up.

Thank You So Much for giving me this incredible arc !💐🖤

Ren, Ghostface, Reaper, Si Shen... no matter what name you go by, you are officially my favorite Syndicate antihero. (PLEASE DON'T TELL ELIAS) I was obsessed with you from page one. There's just something about a morally grey assassin that also moonlights as a masked daddy ROFL. But seriously, I loved Guarded in Darkness. Ren and Aria both have become one of my favorite Victoria Lum couples.

In Guarded in Darkness, the Antihero Syndicate is still trying to take down the Association. But Ren, who has many different identities (this isn't a spoiler) has been given a target by the Triads... and it's Aria. The question is why? What I loved about Ren was he goes from this man who refuses to use his voice. He chooses to be mute and uses this as a tool or weapon. But as his cold soul begins to thaw (or maybe it's just his new heart) Ren finds he wants to use his voice again... specifically with Aria. Aria, who's still grieving the loss of her fiancé from book 1. Can Ren find a new path in this world of games, murder, and questionable actions?

Aria was amazing. I loved how Victoria wrote her and Ren's characters. She showed us what grief continues to look like a year later, how that loss affects us, and what it's like when we open ourselves back up after. Aria was a great example of this. I was intoxicated with Aria and Ren's tension and couldn't put this book down. The Queen of Emotional Romances definitely has struck again and I'll gladly read every book!

Guarded in Darkness is a beautifully written dark mafia romance that had me hooked right away.. The constant sense of danger and nonstop action kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Ren is a deadly mute assassin with one mission: fulfill his obligations to the Kongs by completing every mark assigned to him, all in pursuit of the one thing he wants most. Aria is an ER nurse still struggling to move forward after the devastating loss of her fiancé. A fan of all things horror, she forms an unexpected connection through an online app where she feels safe enough to share her darkest thoughts.

Ren becomes completely captivated by Aria. When a bounty is placed on her and she is his next mark, he is forced into her world, making it harder than ever to keep his distance. They are connected in a way Aria does not see coming.

This story is filled with secrets, deception, danger, emotional moments, scorching chemistry, and twists that kept me guessing until the very end. I couldn't get enough of Ren and Aria or the chaos surrounding their journey. If you love dark mafia romances with suspense, possessively dark heroes, and plenty of unexpected turns, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Aria & Ren

Ren couldn't be a more tortured morally grey MC. I mean he could but then this book probably wouldn't have been so enjoyable. I loved how throughout the book he kept picking her over everything. Kept protecting.

Then tension is thick with these two and the slow burn adds to the depth of their connection. He brings out the darkness in her. The parts of her that she is connecting with.. the moving on, the things she watches when she's not working and the interactions she has with him.

& that plot twist.. Lord have mercy. I was yelling at the book. LOL

It was SO flipping good.

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.

Amazing story, awesome characters. Loved the danger and chaos. The back and forth with the characters really had me invested. They were both so captivating. Keri her safe until they could get what they needed and then end her life. But he couldn’t do it. He fell for her. For the first time in his mine he wanted to be something other than what others expected him to be. And I loved him for that. The two main characters were so good together. I loved the way they connected and how he protected her. A truly awesome story.

Wow!!! What an incredible book this is. Ren is si shen, a killer!!! He is told he has to get a key from Aria and the kill her, but he can't, she has become his obsession. He knows he can't have happiness with her because he has her late fiance's heart, he doesn't feel worthy of having it. So, he protects her and fall for her!
This story is incredibly well written with such strong emotion, it will blow ypu away. It's so addictive. And I absolutely love how the author wove in one of my all time favorite games (Chess) into the story. Don't miss this incredible book!!! I highly recommend

Victoria knows how to write some compelling dark romances! Aria and Ren were a fabulous couple. Ren is a stellar morally grey hero. His yearning from afar as Aria navigates grief is 10/10. And I loved how grief of a significant other was presented in this book. It felt like it considered instead of being an after thought or a plot device. The other thing I really loved was the hidden identities. I'm a sucker for this trope even when it seems like it should be obvious. I think it just adds a fun element. This dark romance is another hit in a fabulous series

This was another fantastic addition to the series! Aria and Ren’s story is officially my favorite so far. Victoria Lum does an amazing job weaving intricate details throughout a compelling, fast-paced story that kept me completely hooked. I also love how she gives us little glimpses into the other characters’ stories without taking away from the main plot. I couldn’t put this one down, and now I’m already counting down to the next book!

"For every heart that kept beating when it had every reason to stop... you're badass."

I fell in love with Victoria Lum's writing the moment I picked up *When Hearts Unravel*, and from that point onwards I was HOOKED.

When Ren was first mentioned in Sworn in Deceit, I was instantly intrigued by the mysterious, silent assassin lurking in the shadows. By the time that book ended, I was DESPERATE for his story. And Guarded in Darkness gave me EVERYTHING I was hoping for.

Ren isn't just another morally grey hero. He's Si Shen. The God of Death. The Syndicate's deadliest weapon. A man who was manipulated into a life of killing for the sake of protecting the only family he has left—his sister. He barely speaks. He doesn't smile. He believes his life belongs to everyone except himself.

Until a brown-haired ER nurse who loves book matching crashes into his world...And suddenly, his stolen heart starts beating for someone it was never supposed to.

"Because the only person this stolen heart answers to... is her."

OMG!!! I LOVED HIM.

Ren completely stole my heart. Watching someone who has spent his entire life believing he was nothing more than a weapon slowly discover that maybe—just maybe—he deserves love was EVERYTHING. His internal conflict between fulfilling his duty, protecting his sister, and falling for Aria was so beautifully written that my heart genuinely hurt for him.

Then there's Aria.

After losing her fiancé in the hospital blackout from book one, she's simply... surviving. She's grieving, trying to find pieces of herself again, and somehow keeps crossing paths with a mysterious masked stranger who appears whenever she needs him most.

I adored Aria. She's compassionate, incredibly strong, and despite everything she's been through, she never loses that part of herself that wants to help others. Watching her slowly choose to live again instead of merely existing was such a beautiful journey.

Their dynamic??

ABSOLUTE PERFECTION.

The tension between them had me holding my breath more times than I can count. The anonymous gifts. The late-night visits. The silent protection. The stolen moments. The MASK. Every interaction had me giggling one second and screaming the next.

"Every god has a weakness, even Si Shen. And perhaps this is mine. Her."

SIR??? WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT???

What I loved most was that this wasn't just a romance. Victoria balances romance with suspense, action, mystery, organised crime, shocking twists, and emotional depth so effortlessly that I never wanted to put the book down. Every revelation made the web of lies and manipulation surrounding Ren and Aria even more heartbreaking, and there were so many moments where I genuinely didn't know who to trust.

And can we PLEASE talk about how much these two had to endure? The manipulation. The sacrifices. The impossible choices. It hurt watching both of them believe they had to carry the weight of the world alone.

"This man, who never got to have anything because his life wasn't his… Until me. Until he stole those moments for himself."

THAT LINE BROKE ME.

If there's one thing Victoria does exceptionally well, it's writing broken people who slowly find hope in each other. She makes you fall in love with every flawed, damaged part of her characters until you're rooting for them with your whole heart.

Ren deserves the entire world. And honestly? He finally found it in Aria.

4⭐️ 2🌶️ ARC REVIEW: 📖 GUARDED IN DARKNESS 📖 by Victoria Lum ✨ This is book 2 in the Antihero Syndicate series. It can be read as a standalone BUT I highly recommend you read book 1, Sworn in Deceit, first so you can understand the Antihero Syndicate and its mission. The Antihero Syndicate commits violence in order to take down the more-corrupt The Association. Ren is an assassin for both the Antihero Syndicate, and the Kong family, a member of The Association. When his next target is Aria, the ER nurse he’s become obsessed with, things get complicated. He’s the Triads’ most-feared weapon, and she’s his only weakness.

Aria is feeling lost after the loss of her fiancé, and starts talking to a mystery man on a secret app. When the Antihero Syndicate learns that there’s a bounty on her head, the selectively-mute Ren is sent to be her bodyguard. Instead of killing her for The Association, though, he finds himself watching over her to keep her safe, like her own guardian angel. He is dangerous but finally found someone worth protecting. She puts everyone else first, and he thinks he’s only good for violence, and so they become each other’s safe place. When he remembers her favorite flowers after overhearing her tell someone one time. 🥹

Overall a fun, entertaining read full of twists, and perfect if you love a morally-gray MMC doing sweet things like he washes her hair, he has her favorite cookies delivered, his love language is gift-giving and making sure she eats…AND spicy things like dominance, hand necklace, he talks her through it, somno, and fun times with a knife handle.

Looking forward to Sofia & Tristan’s story in book 3–Taken in Seduction.

(I received an ARC for this book)

trigger warnings will be at the bottom of this review, to avoid spoilers
The FMC is an ER nurse and medical emergencies play out on page. On page violence by and to main characters, non-fatal injuries to main characters on page, gang/mob violence on page, organ trafficking, vigilante justice, gun violence and injury on page, the loss of a loved one by gun violence, grief, parental death discussed on page, stalking, assault, threats to the lives of main/side characters. Sexual content includes dormaphilia kink, somnophilia kink, c!ckwarming

Thanks to my attachment to the characters introduced in the first book, I took everything personally reading this one. I felt every hit Ren and Aria took. I was worried I would have to wait for Ren’s book. I can not tell you how happy I am that we got his second! I was halfway through the first page and I already knew he was a goner. Ren is the definition of obsessed, and I loved it! He gifts her…patients. It was very romantic. She’s the missing key, in more ways than one. But the most important way: Ren’s key to simplicity. It was more than love. Aria gave him a new lease on life, one he was convinced he didn’t deserve. I was unprepared for Ren to not just have emotions, but to SHOW them. Tears were wept. On top of very easily loving every character (as ridiculous as everyone perfectly is), I enjoyed every second of all the moving parts. The secrets, obsessions in the dark, danger in the shadows.

Two of my favorite side characters made appearances, and I MUST know if they are getting their own books?! BUT we do know who’s next and I am THRILLED! I know it’s going to be devastatingly delicious!

My Favorite Quotes:
• “No one else needs to understand except us.”
• “So you’re finally admitting you put all those people in the hospital for me.” “Romantic, right?”
• “Look at you. Making a mess. Dripping all over me. So f!cking needy. You need me, don’t you? This p!ssy needs me.”
• “I’ll always come back. As long as you’ll have me.”
• “You’ll never have another orgasm without remembering this. Remembering me. Remembering who once made you feel f!cking alive.”
• “Let me hear you break apart for me like I’m breaking for you.”
• “If I could, there’d be no force strong enough on earth to keep me away from you.”
• “I’m going to own you. Brand you from inside out the way you’ve scored yourself permanently into my heart.”
• “You’re…everything.”
• “Always. Only you. Forever you.”

Review of advance copy

Guarded in Darkness is the second book in Victoria Lum's Anti-Hero Syndicate series and it plunges readers straight back into the dark, dangerous world that was established in the first book. Set one year after the previous book's events, this one delivers a perfect blend of suspense, emotional depth, romance, and intrigue.

For me, Ren is one of the series' most fascinating characters. Operating from the shadows for the Syndicate, he is fiercely loyal to the few people he allows into his life. His devotion to his sister is unwavering, and her health and safety remain his driving force. While Ren has always appeared controlled and detached, Victoria expertly peels back his layers, revealing a man burdened by guilt, duty, and a growing desire for something, and someone, he believes he doesn't deserve.

Aria is still struggling under the weight of the devastating loss she experienced in book one. Consumed by grief and uncertainty, she is moving through life without truly living it. Her emotional journey is compelling as she grapples with the guilt of moving forward and the longing to feel seen and understood. The comfort she finds in her mysterious masked stranger creates an intriguing dynamic that adds both tension and vulnerability to the story.

One of the book's greatest strengths is Victoria's ability to balance multiple plotlines without sacrificing any of the pacing or the character development. While Aria's quandary remains at the forefront, the larger mysteries surrounding the Association continue to unfold. At the same time, Ren's concerns for his sister and his complicated ties outside of the Syndicate add further layers to an already compelling narrative.

The suspense steadily increases as Aria begins receiving unexpected gifts from someone unknown, and late-night visits from her masked protector. The emotional conflict intensifies as her connection to both the masked stranger and Ren deepens. Meanwhile, Ren finds himself torn between his mission, his loyalty to his sister, and the feelings he can no longer ignore. His internal struggle is one of the book's most powerful elements, particularly as he wrestles with his fear of being truly known and his belief that he is unworthy of love.

As secrets begin to unravel and long-hidden truths come to light, the tension really escalates. Aria is forced to confront difficult realities and make choices that will undoubtedly have lasting consequences. The revelations hit hard, challenging both the characters and the reader's expectations.

Victoria has crafted a captivating second book filled with emotional complexity, high stakes, and compelling character growth. Guarded in Darkness is an engaging and addictive addition to the Anti-Hero Syndicate series that will leave readers eager for the next instalment. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy intense romance, morally grey heroes, and high-stakes suspense.

🖤 When the Monster Chooses to Protect Instead of Destroy 🖤
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Some dark romances thrive on danger and obsession. Guarded in Darkness certainly has both, but what made this story unforgettable was watching two broken people slowly rediscover what it means to truly live again. Victoria Lum blends suspense, emotional healing, and breathtaking romance into a story that kept me completely invested from beginning to end.

Ren was one of the most compelling heroes I've read in a long time. Known as the Triads' deadliest assassin, he has spent years believing his only purpose is to obey orders and eliminate anyone standing in his way. Beneath that ruthless exterior, though, is a man carrying impossible burdens, sacrificing everything to protect the sister he loves. Watching Ren struggle between duty and the feelings he develops for Aria created such an emotional journey. Every choice he made pulled him further away from the monster he believed himself to be and closer to becoming the man he secretly longed to be.

Aria's journey was just as moving. Still grieving the devastating loss of her fiancé, she isn't simply trying to survive. She's trying to figure out how to live again without feeling guilty for moving forward. Victoria Lum handles her grief with so much care and authenticity that every step of Aria's healing felt earned. Seeing her slowly reconnect with joy, hope, and love made her impossible not to root for.

The chemistry between Ren and Aria was absolutely electric. Their connection begins in secrecy and uncertainty, but every interaction adds another layer of trust, vulnerability, and longing. Ren's quiet obsession never felt possessive for the sake of shock value. Instead, it became an expression of how desperately he wanted to protect the one person who made him question everything he'd ever believed about himself.

The suspense never lets up. Twists, betrayals, hidden identities, and dangerous secrets kept me guessing throughout the entire book, and several reveals genuinely caught me by surprise. Even when the story slowed to build the larger mystery, every detail ultimately mattered, making the payoff even more satisfying.

One of my favorite parts of this series continues to be the Antihero Syndicate itself. Every member adds another layer to the story, and the found family they've built together creates moments of humor and loyalty that balance the darker themes perfectly. I also loved seeing Ren's relationship with his sister and how deeply that bond influenced every decision he made.

Guarded in Darkness is a gripping dark romance about choosing love over fear, hope over hopelessness, and humanity over the life someone else chose for you. Ren and Aria's story completely stole my heart, and I'm more invested than ever in this incredible series.

Guarded In Darkness is the second book in the Antihero Syndicate series by Victoria Lum, following the group that has banded together to bring down The Association. I was excited for this one because Ren was introduced in the previous book, and I couldn't wait to learn more about him.
This story is packed with danger, mystery, action, and unanswered questions that kept me turning the pages. Ren is a selectively mute assassin for the Triads, but he is also secretly working with the Antihero Syndicate to bring down both the Triads and The Association. He's forced to remain their killer because they are holding his ailing sister “protected”—which really means imprisoned. He will do whatever they ask in exchange for their promise to help her receive a heart transplant.
When Ren is ordered to kill Aria, a woman he has been obsessed with for a year, everything changes. He begins searching for a key the Triads believe she possesses while also working to keep her safe from them. I loved both his internal struggles and the growth he experiences throughout the story.
Aria is dealing with the grief of losing her fiancé during the events of the previous book. As she tries to move forward, she develops a friendship with a stranger through an app—someone she can be completely honest with. What she doesn't know is that the stranger is Ren, who was previously assigned to protect Lana and has now been tasked with protecting Aria.
The chemistry between Ren and Aria was incredible, and I loved watching Aria come back to life as the story progressed. However, Ren carries several secrets that could shatter everything between them. How can they overcome the betrayal, secrets, and danger standing in their way?
The twists and turns were fantastic! There were moments when the amount of detail slowed the pace for me, but those seemingly small details ultimately became important pieces of the bigger picture. The reveals were well worth the buildup.
Ren and Aria completely stole my heart, and I loved how perfectly they complemented each other. If you enjoy stories filled with secrets, deception, danger, action, emotional depth, sizzling chemistry, and twists that keep you guessing until the very end, you'll definitely want to pick this one up.
While it does say it can be read as a standalone, there were moments when I felt like I had been dropped into the middle of an ongoing story and needed more background information because I missed something even though I had read. I would definitely recommend reading the first book before starting this one.

Thank you so much to Victoria Lum and The Author Agency for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Ever since finishing Sworn in Deceit, I'd been impatiently waiting for Ren's story. There was something about the silent assassin that completely fascinated me. He barely needed words to command a scene, and I desperately wanted to understand what was hiding beneath all that control.

Victoria Lum absolutely delivered.

One of my favourite things about this series is how every character feels layered, flawed, and emotionally complex. Ren might be a lethal assassin, but underneath the violence and impossible choices is someone carrying an enormous amount of guilt, responsibility, and love. His devotion to his sister, his loyalty to the Syndicate, and the impossible position he's placed in create this constant internal conflict that made every chapter impossible to put down.

Then there's Aria.

Watching her navigate grief a year after losing her fiancé felt incredibly authentic. Victoria doesn't rush her healing or pretend love magically fixes everything. Instead, Aria slowly rediscovers herself through two very different relationships. Ren becomes this quiet, unwavering protector, while Ghostface444 gives her a safe place to explore the parts of herself she'd been too afraid to acknowledge. Seeing those relationships develop in completely different ways made the emotional side of this book just as compelling as the suspense.

And speaking of suspense... the plot absolutely refused to sit still.

Every time I thought I'd connected the dots, another twist would send me straight back to questioning everything I'd read. Some reveals I suspected. Others completely blindsided me. There were multiple moments where I actually had to pause and process what had just happened before diving into the next chapter.

Ren completely stole my heart. He's exactly the type of morally grey antihero I love reading about. Protective to a fault. Ruthless when necessary. Soft only where Aria is concerned. The yearning between these two was beautifully written, and the slow burn made every emotional payoff feel earned.

Victoria also continues to expand the wider Antihero Syndicate world without ever taking focus away from Ren and Aria's story. Instead, every little glimpse of the other characters somehow made me even more excited for what's still to come.

If you enjoy dark mafia romance packed with emotional depth, morally grey heroes, obsessive devotion, slow-burn tension, layered mysteries, and twists that genuinely surprise you, I highly recommend picking this one up.

This series somehow keeps getting stronger with every book, and I am officially counting down until the next instalment.

Guarded in Darkness
Victoria Lum

Ren is an assassin for a Triad. Caught in a tangled web of family, business and deciet with little hope to extricate himself from the bloody and dangerous life he leads. Loyal to a fault to his sister yet, the Knight on the board for the Antihero Syndicate.
Enter, Aria an ER nurse grieving a traumatic event, unknowingly caught in a web of deceit and danger.
Ren and Aria conduct much of their early relationship in the dark by design. I did enjoy Ren's 'offerings' like a cat bringing dead things through the cat flap.

Although Guarded in Darkness is standalone, I felt that I was dropped into an existing cohort of characters and I desperately wanted a family tree to put everyone on the map. The Association and the Antihero Syndicate are an established conflict. Elias and Lana (Aria's BFF) come from a previous book, Sworn in Secret, where Ren himself was a major player. Oh well, one way to get me to go and read the authors back catalogue!

Despite what I'm about to say, I thoroughly enjoyed Guarded in Darkness. Ren and Aria were a great read. But this stuck with me.

Ren our MMC is portrayed as selectively mute. As an assassin, as a character who is a highly trained Triad operative, to be silent or near to silent makes complete sense.  The dissonance between a 'literary selective mutism' (term borrowed from Danielle E Price 2022) and selective mutism as it falls under anxiety disorders in the DSM-5 is for me, ethically difficult to swallow. The choice of identifying Ren as selectively mute is my sticking point.

Ren's silence is agency. A 'when the world goes to shit, this I can control' choice. As much as I hope, wish and strive for a more inclusive world where more of our community can sign even the basics, the majority of this character group are fluent in expressive and receptive ASL...for someone who is not deaf or hard of hearing but, has chosen not to speak. An interesting author choice. If there is a Deaf or Hard of Hearing character I am yet to meet, I will be thrilled.

And yes, I totally own that I am thinking too much about this rather than just leaning into the falling in love with the dark side of life, sneaky dealings, a few near misses while being introduced to a sophisticated underground society and band of brothers.

With many thank to the author, Victoria Lum and The Author Agency for a copy of the eARC ahead of publication.

Guarded in Darkness, the second book in the Antihero series, centres around Ren, a selectively mute Triad assassin who’s definitely not looking to fall for anyone, especially not ER nurse Aria. But feelings don’t exactly care about good timing, and things only get more complicated when Aria becomes his next target. But before he completes his mission, he must retrieve a mysterious key she’s unknowingly in possession of.

Ren was such an intriguing character. Deeply conflicted he was caught between two worlds, working for the Association while secretly working with the Antihero syndicate bring them down. It was a dangerous balancing act, made even more complicated by the fact that the Association had complete control over his chronically ill sister as leverage to keep him in line and ensure his loyalty. Meanwhile, Aria was still grieving the loss of her fiancé the year before. Seeking comfort, she confided in an anonymous stranger through an app, appreciating the freedom that anonymity gave her, allowing her to really open up, completely unaware that its Ren she’s talking to, hiding behind yet another mask. There’s just something about a quiet, brooding, emotionally repressed hero that gets me every time, and Ren’s selective mutism made him stand out even more. He somehow managed to be intimidatingly dangerous, protective, and incredibly swoony all at once and watching him try to convince himself that his growing feelings for Aria were somehow the fault of his new heart had me smiling. They do say it’s the quiet ones you need to watch out for, and he was living proof of that. He was dangerous, and ruthless when he needed to be, but underneath it all there was a vulnerability that made him impossible not to root for. The chemistry between him and Aria was fantastic, and I loved that their relationship didn’t feel rushed. Seeing them slowly lower their walls and begin to trust each other made every interaction feel earned. Their quieter moments were just as compelling as the action-packed ones.

This book had me hooked from the very first page. Guarded in Darkness was a fantastic addition to the Antihero series with everything I want from a dark mafia romance - danger, tension, twists, secrets, balancing the romance and suspense perfectly. If you love morally grey heroes, slow-burn romance, and high-stake stories with plenty of heart, this one is definitely worth picking up.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Guarded in Darkness completely pulled me in from the very first chapter and never let me go. Victoria Lum created a story that was intense, emotional, suspenseful, and impossible to put down. Every chapter had me wanting just one more until I suddenly realized I had reached the end.

Ren quickly became one of my favorite morally gray heroes. He is quiet, lethal, and terrifying to everyone around him, yet underneath all that darkness is a man who has never truly been shown what love or kindness looks like. Watching him slowly unravel because of Aria was one of the best parts of this story. His protectiveness, his silent devotion, and the constant battle between duty and his heart made him such a fascinating character. Every time he chose Aria over the life he had always known, I loved him even more.

Aria was equally captivating. After everything she had already endured, she could have easily been written as broken, but instead she was resilient, compassionate, and stronger than she realized. I loved seeing her find pieces of herself again while navigating a world filled with secrets, danger, and betrayal. Her connection with Ren felt natural, emotional, and beautifully complicated.

The chemistry between Ren and Aria was incredible. The slow build made every interaction feel meaningful, and the tension had me hanging on every scene they shared. Their relationship balanced tenderness with obsession in a way that felt completely believable. I found myself rooting for them through every twist, every heartbreaking moment, and every impossible choice.

The world Victoria Lum created was just as addictive as the romance itself. Secret societies, organized crime, betrayals, shocking twists, and a cast of unforgettable characters kept me completely invested. Every revelation made me question what I thought I knew, and I loved how the suspense never let up.

If you love dark romance with morally gray heroes, masked assassins, obsessive protectors, high stakes suspense, and a romance that grows in the middle of chaos, Guarded in Darkness absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR. This was an emotional, thrilling, and unforgettable read that left me thinking about these characters long after I turned the final page. I cannot wait to see what Victoria Lum gives us next.

MY THOUGHTS:
This was a fun read! The main characters totally keep you engaged into the unique and edge-of-your-seat plot line! This is a book 1 of the series but the stories are standalones. So, this book does have a HEA!

The FMC, Aria Connors, is an ER Nurse and the MMC, Ren Knight, is an assassin. Their complicated relationship gets even more complicated when her name comes up next on his kill list. There is a unique twist to their relationship following the death of her fiancé who was killed in the same shooting as the MMC where he was also shot.

FAVORITE QUOTE(S):
“Quietly, I remove my jacket and unholster my gun before setting it on the basket atop her dresser—the vixen has even set aside a special place for me to put my stuff.”

“Being with you in a way I’ve never been with anyone else. It’s all real. Too real. Because I was selfish. I wanted more from a woman I had no right to. I wanted your smiles. Your jokes. Your crazy taste in movies. Your lack of fear. I wanted your touches, your kisses, the way you fit perfectly in my arms. I knew I should’ve stopped and told you the truth. I was going to. But I kept thinking, one more day. One more night. One more chess game.”

“We’re all cavemen,” he licks the shell of my ear and adds, “with the right woman.”

I have found your newest, most dangerously addictive book obsession! Ever since I fell head over heels for Victoria Lum's writing (even though I totally read When Hearts Awaken out of order at first, oops 😂), I have been hooked. But when a certain silent, mysterious assassin named Ren made a cameo in Sworn in Deceit and showed up in the little epilogue in When Hearts Unravel lol, I became utterly desperate for his story. Let me just tell you, Guarded in Darkness gave me absolutely everything I wanted and so much more. If you love a morally gray, masked hero who is completely heartless to the world but a total absolute puddle for his girl, you need to add this to your TBR right this second!

Ren is known as the God of Death—the syndicate’s deadliest mute weapon who believes his life belongs to everyone but himself. But after a near-death experience and receiving a literal replacement heart, his world completely tilts when he crosses paths with Aria, a compassionate but fiercely resilient ER nurse who is trying to survive the crushing grief of losing her fiancé. What starts as anonymous confessions on a dark app, late-night shadow protection, and mysterious "gifts" left in her ER turns into the most insane, breathless slow-burn tension you will ever read. And the absolute kicker? Ren gets handed a new contract from the syndicate... and Aria is his next target. The forbidden, high-stakes angst of him pining for her while juggling his dangerous duty had me holding my breath the entire time!

Honestly, Ren has easily become one of my top book boyfriends of the year. Having a Chinese main character written as this tragically broken, fiercely protective dark romance hero meant everything t and can we please talk about him calling her gongzhu (princess) like excuse me?! 🥺 My heart completely melted. He is the ultimate respectful alpha; he would literally murder the entire world to keep her safe, but he still lets her call all the shots.

Watching Aria break free from her chains and choose to truly live again while Ren discovers he actually deserves love was a masterpiece of character development. Victoria Lum effortlessly balances the spice and deep emotional healing with high-octane crime suspense and twists that will completely blindside you.

✨ ARC REVIEW✨
⭐️ 4/5
📅 July 17, 2026

❤️ Masked Assassin
❤️ Stalker/Protector
❤️ Obsessed Hero
❤️ Secret Identities
❤️ Found Family
❤️ Morally Gray MMC

Okay, I knew Ren and Aria's story was going to be a wild ride, but AHHH... there was SO much happening in this book. 😂

First of all, the Reaper leaving personalized notes for Aria? I loved it. And honestly, Aria might be just as psychotic as Ren because this woman is literally asking herself, "Why am I smiling?" while being stalked. 😂 Meanwhile, she has absolutely no idea that the Reaper, Ghostface444, and Ren are ALL THE SAME PERSON. I was just waiting for everything to blow up in his face.

And Ren... you stupid dummy. WHY would you show up to Aria's apartment as the guy from the movie theater?! Sir, you are supposed to be a highly trained assassin. Pull it together. 😂

Honestly though, Aria and Ren just worked for me. They're both a little unhinged in their own ways, which made them kind of perfect for each other. Ren was supposed to protect her until they found the key and then kill her, but of course Aria had to go and get under his skin instead. I mean... we love an assassin who can't follow through with the assignment because he caught feelings. 😂

I also had SO many questions about everything happening with the Syndicate. I couldn't believe Aleksei came back, and Tristan being brought into the meetings?! Once everything started coming together, AHHH... SO MANY THINGS HAPPENED SO FAST. Every time I thought I had something figured out, something else happened.

Poor Aria was dealing with SO much throughout this book. And the whole situation with Blake and Ren having his heart is still WILD to me. Like... how do you even begin to process something like that?!

I had such a fun time with this one. I loved Ren and Aria together, and I loved getting more of the Syndicate and all the chaos surrounding them. Between the secret identities, a masked assassin, the stalking, and all the twists and turns, there was never a dull moment.

If you love dark romance with morally gray men, obsessed heroes, secret identities, found family, and a whole lot of chaos, I'd definitely add this one to your TBR.

Thank you to Victoria for the ARC. As always, all thoughts are my own.

I always knew I was going to love Elias's story (Sworn In Deceit) from the all snippets from his cameos in The Orchid series but I was not anticipating becoming obsessed with Ren instead!! Ren came in like a force to be reconned with and stays with you whether you want him to or not. Spoiler: I want him to!! 😏

Ren: the mute assassin, Si Shen; God of Death, heartless. Ren has a duty to the Kong's, complete his marks and they'll help him with his one wish. He is great at his job, he's heartless, doesn't speak to anyone and wants to believe that whoever the Kong's deem as a mark are bad people. But after a near death experience and a new heart, things aren't as black and white as they once were. His replacement heart seems to be beating to a different drum especially around a particular nurse with a no fear gene. Things begin to get complicated when the Kong's assign Si Shen with a new mark, one that could end one life but save another. Can Ren save them both or is he forever doomed to too be the God of Death and nothing more?

Aria: ER nurse, lover of horror and thrill seeker. After the loss of her fiancé, the man she was to marry was taken from her in the very hospital where they worked to save lives. With the grief slowly stripping away at the woman she was before, she feels lost. Looking for ways to cope, sometimes dangerous ways. Within these dangers, she somehow never feels alone with a shadow following her everywhere. Is this shadow there to keep her safe or to pose an even bigger threat to her life? Soon strange things seem to happen around her: "gifts" left in her ER, strangers asking her things she knows nothing about but also a man in a mask. What do these "gifts" mean, what do these strangers want with her and why does she feel drawn to this man in a mask? Will she find the answers before it's too late or will her love for danger catch up with her?

Ren and Aria's story is about finding yourself, finding a reason to continue and finding the Bonnie to your Clyde (but with an HEA 😉). Sometimes you just got to let your gloom shine and just be yourself. We are perfect just the way were are!

“Every god has a weakness, even Si Shen.
And perhaps this is mine.
Her.”

I discovered Victoria Lum’s books this year and safe to say i’ve found myself a new favourite author and she’s found herself a new fan. I fear this series if it keeps on going like this might become my top 3 series ever.

I was very intrigued by Ren in the previous book in series and i thought i had him figured out but i was surprised. He is a lot more complex than i thought him to be which was a positive sign. Ren was referred to as “God of Death” and is a very trustable mute assassin who is perfect in his job which is intriguing in itself but things take a turn when he receives a replacement heart which starts to beat for someone else and there comes a time where he has to make difficult choices.

“This man, who never got to have anything because his life wasn’t his…Until me.
Until he stole those moments for himself.”

Aria is the kind of heroine i love to read out. She’s grieving the loss of her fiancé and decides to start living again. Her strength was one thing which stood out to me and the love she had for everyone around her.

Their dynamic was one of my favourite to read! The chemistry between the two was INSANE and there were so many scenes where i legit held my breath. I love how this book offered much more than romance- it had action, mystery and anything one could possibly ask for!!

Read if you like:
BODYGUARD/TARGET
MASKED MUTE ASSASSIN
STALKER/PROTECTOR
MORALLY GRAY MEN
LOVER IN THE DARK
OBSESSED HERO
SECRET SOCIETY
MAFIA/ORGANIZED CRIME
DORMA/SOMNO PLAY
TOUCH HER AND REGRET IT

Overall, this is hands down going as one of my top reads of the year (just like the first one in the series is) and i genuinely cant wait for the next book in series cause the crumbs we got of that couple have me dying!!! I just know its going to be another hit! i have really high hopes for the whole series as a whole and i trust victoria to deliver!

thankyou to the author agency for the arc, im so grateful to have had a chance to read it early!

Guarded in Darkness by Victoria Lum
Book 2 in the Antihero Syndicate series(can be read as a standalone romance, but reading Book 1 gives more context about the world and recurring characters).

I have such a soft spot for dark romances where the hero is terrifying to everyone except the heroine, and Guarded in Darknes absolutely delivered that feeling. Ren completely stole the show for me. He's a masked, mostly silent assassin who's supposed to protect Aria... until the day he's ordered to kill her. That premise alone had me hooked, but what kept me reading was watching his walls slowly crumble every time he was around her.

Aria has already been through so much before the story even begins, and I loved that she wasn't written as a helpless heroine. She's grieving, scared, and trying to figure out who's threatening her, but she never loses her strength. Seeing her slowly learn to trust Ren while he quietly became more and more obsessed with keeping her safe was honestly my favorite part of the book.

The romance builds at just the right pace. It's full of lingering tension, protective moments, and that delicious "he'd burn the world for her" energy. Ren doesn't say much, but somehow every action speaks louder than words. Every time he stepped between Aria and danger, I melted a little more.

I also appreciated that the suspense wasn't just there for decoration. The mystery surrounding the threats, the mafia politics, and the Antihero Syndicate all kept me guessing, and there were a couple of twists I genuinely didn't see coming. It balanced the romance with enough action to keep the story moving without taking away from the emotional moments.

If you're looking for a dark romance with a morally grey hero who falls first (even if he refuses to admit it), protective obsession, emotional angst, and a heroine who finds light even in the darkest situations, this is definitely worth picking up.
