The Velvet Cage: A Dark Mafia Arranged Marriage Romance

Rate this book
He was the monster I was warned about. I just didn't know he had been watching me for years.

SYBIL VANCE
I was sold to pay a debt. Dressed in white lace, my father handed me over to the most ruthless, untouchable mafia boss in Chicago, entirely expecting me to break.

Thayer Thorne is a sociopath. He is cold, calculating, and terrifyingly obsessed with me. He locked me in a world of bulletproof glass and dark secrets, stripping away everything I knew. But the most dangerous part of my captivity isn't the men hunting us, or the blood on my husband's hands.

The real danger is that I’m starting to fall in love with the bars of my cage.

THAYER THORNE
I murdered my own father to take the crown, but I burned the world to the ground to keep her.

Sybil was never just a pawn. She was my endgame from the moment I first saw her. I dragged her into the shadows to protect her from the light, and I will slaughter anyone who tries to take her from me—even her own family.

She thinks I’m a monster. She’s right. But she’s my queen, and I will make her realize that she belongs to the devil.

Welcome to the Thorne Syndicate. The cage has no walls, but you will never want to leave.

"I was covered in blood. I was a monster. But you didn't run away. You stared at me with those massive, slanted blue eyes
"I knew right then
"I looked at you, …. and the absolute, terrifying realization hit me in the chest. You were mine. You had always been mine. It just took the universe thirteen years to put you in my path."
"You decided my entire fate in three seconds,"
"I decided my own fate,"
"Because the moment I saw you, I knew I would burn my entire life to the ground to keep you.".....

My father sold me to a monster to pay off a debt. He thought he was condemning me to death. He thought he was locking a fragile bird in a cage that I could never survive. But he didn't understand the fundamental truth of darkness. The cage only works if you want to escape. When you fall in love with the bars, when you surrender completely to the monster who holds the key, the cage disappears completely. It becomes a kingdom. I am Sybil Thorne. I am the Queen of Ash. And the devil is entirely, entirely, forever my pet.

If I ignore the repetitive words, the aforementioned editorial errors, and the lack of care that the book definitely deserves, I thought it was very good.

From the first page, I was on the edge of my seat. You don't get a moment's rest, there's constant action, something is always happening, to the point where I thought to myself that it's impossible for anyone to survive this...

Thayer, absolutely toxic, manipulative, possessive, and deranged, but he's just so damn amazing.
I felt so sorry for Sybil from the beginning, actually throughout the whole book, because... Thayer, but I knew she had it in her. She was amazing, and I experienced everything with her. From panic fear of almost everything, to love for which she kills, dies, lives... everything together. And I wouldn't worry about the age when it all started and when nothing really happened.

It's the kind of addiction you don't want to put down. At least I didn't put it down until I finished reading it. More, please...

Good but...

Some spoilers

I really went back and forth on whether to read this. I don’t mind dark romance, but when a 22-year-old man looks at a 13-year-old girl and immediately claims her as “mine,” it crosses a line for me and edges far too close to Lolita territory— reminded me of the escalator scene with the young girl. Given everything going on in the world right now, (unreleased files) it felt less edgy and more unsettlingly creepy.
It wasn’t the hero’s obsession itself that bothered me—it was her age when that obsession began. Even if he waited until she was 18 to act on it, knowing his fixation started when she was 13 made it difficult to overlook.
That said, the author is undeniably talented. The writing is strong, and the story pulls you in despite the uncomfortable beginning. However, there were editing issues that stood out—for example, in one line she’s wearing a black lace bra, and in the next it’s suddenly white. The book also felt overly long; by the end, I found myself skimming. The book was pretty good it just wasn't really what I was expecting.
