Fated Mates of Shadowbone Academy #3
A Bond So Deadly
Graduates of Shadowbone Academy. Stand as one, our forgotten, lost warriors. For without you… There will be no times at all.
When the queen finds out I'm fated to Thane and the others, I think my time is up, but now my bestie Blake, the demon queen, is here, and everything has changed. An unlikely alliance is forged, but there's no telling how long it will last.
If I'm going to survive, I need to claim my immortality, but even though I have most of my memories, I'm still prophesized to destroy my mates. Thane, Knox, Galen, Raith and I work hard to unravel the truth, but in the end there's only one thing we know for One way or another, my mates and I are the ones who will end this war. I just hope that when the shadows clear, we'll be standing over more than just ashes.
Let the battle begin.
A Bond So Deadly is a fun but dark(ish) why choose fantasy romance novel, and the third book in the Fated Mates of Shadowbone Academy series. It features a clumsy, relatable heroine, and her droolworthy, fated mates who will do anything to protect her. The story is in first person, present tense, and note that while the main focus is on our leading lady, there is also MM in the harem.
This series is connected to the Game of Psychos series, but can easily be read as a standalone series. For a full list of content warnings, please visit the author's website.

Review of advance copy
*** I received an advance review copy for free from Book Sirens and the author Mia Hartson, and I am leaving this honest and fair review voluntarily.
A Bond So Deadly was a fun read and a solid conclusion to the Fated Mates of Shadowbone Academy series.
One thing I’ve really enjoyed throughout this series is the pacing. It stays consistent from book to book, and this one keeps that same momentum without feeling like it’s dragging things out. The banter is also still one of my favourite parts. There’s enough humour and personality between the characters to keep things entertaining, even when the storyline gets darker.
I especially liked how this book wraps up the plot threads from the first two books. Everything comes together in a way that feels purposeful, and the conflict between Shade and the Queen becomes the real heart of the story. I liked the contrast between Shade taking the moral high ground and the Queen using increasingly selfish justifications for her actions. That made the final conflict much more interesting than simply having a straightforward good-versus-evil showdown.
And honestly… I love her men!!! 😂
Blake and her men are woven into the storyline really effectively, and I enjoyed watching their relationships and dynamics continue to develop while still keeping the larger plot moving forward. They feel like an important part of the story rather than something happening separately from the main conflict.
My one real sticking point was the other Originals blindly following the Queen. I had a hard time believing that all of them would simply go along with her without questioning what was happening or where her decisions were leading. Given who they are and what they presumably know, I wanted a little more resistance or independent thought from them.
Overall, though, this was an enjoyable conclusion. The series maintained a consistent pace, had great banter, brought the previous storylines together nicely, and gave me plenty of Blake-and-her-men moments to enjoy. A fun way to finish the series!

We have dark academia, dark fantasy romance, four shadow daddies and why choose, we have secret identities, a demon best friend, a soul bonded animali that is a phoenix and an evil queen. All the makings of a great book. And it is.
This is the third and final book in the Fated Mates of Shadowbone Academy. And it lived up to the expectations I had in my head.
This book begins right where book two left off. The demon queen, Blake and Shade’s bestie, arrive with her mates and the demon army demanding to know who is trying to hurt her friend. The shadow queen finds it all hilarious until she realises the truth and tries to broker a deal with the demon queen.
The shadow queen demands Shade stays confided to the academy and takes off to the shadow palace.
Shade finally has most of her memories, though there is still something niggling at her mind that won’t break through. It takes a long time for it to come through and the realisation of why it mattered.
The whole book feels like an emotional roller coaster. Just as things settle a bit, something happens. Only for something to change again. Nothing is steady, nothing is known, nothing feels real.
Shade overcomes her tragic start to life to be the saviour the world needs, to become the hope of a realm. To be the one that brings them all together. To be the one to show them all the way. Even when the others aren’t sure, she trusts her instincts. And she stands up for what is right. This includes when she saved Satine, even though the girl tried to kill her.
It’s those choices, those moments that make Shade the person she is. That makes her the one worthy of the realm.
This is such a good series, I have enjoyed it so much. There is a prequel series about Shade’s bestie, Blake finding her mates and becoming the demon queen, The Game of Psychos. And we have Shade still cursed and in crow form.

Here we are, the final book of the series, and Shade is still as naive as she was in book one. I adore Shade and her quirky (mostly) optimistic personality, but she was a little frustrating. Especially when some pretty major clues were flying over her head. Bless her heart. I would've liked a little more progress from her. I'm not looking for a fighter, but she could have put in a little more effort. Nevertheless, she's still my girl.
The guys have come a long way in how they treat Shade. They went from complete twatwaffles to totally devoted, and it's amazing. Especially Raith's monster, winky face. Only the prophecy was still in play, which threw a wrench in things for quite a while. There was also some hinky stuff going on with Shade and the bond. One of my favorite scenes had me questioning what genre I was reading, and of course Shade addresses it in the most ridiculous way. Things get a little dicey before the romantic tension gets resolved.
I enjoyed the plot. This series brought up a lot of questions but was stingy with the answers. Well, we finally get them in this book. We also get an up-close and personal look at the Xalgrith, especially their king. He's an sass minus the "s" just like Krosia. What is up with all the evil running amok? However, Krosia was worse because King Malgur never pretended to be anything but the villain. It was a dumpster fire, and the tension just kept building. Mia waited until the very last second to resolve things. The ending was incredible. It was action-packed with more than a few reveals. The ending was a little more emotional than I was planning, but it wrapped up Shade's story nicely. A Bond So Deadly was fantastic! I'm going to miss this universe.

To me, most of this book was a repetition of book 2. I honestly hated how insecure and ditzy Shade was in this book. I can understand it in book 1. She’s discovering this new life and feels truly overwhelmed. And maybe in some of book 2- she’s just coming into her powers here so the first half of the book would have made some sense but by the last half of the book is when her insecurities should have taken a back seat and we begin to see her character arc. It was disappointing for her character to not have any growth whatsoever. We could have had her character grow into these amazing powers throughout the entirety of the third book and not wait until the very last minute.
I also HATED that Knox did not grovel at all for his behavior. I hate that Shade just rolled over and took all his abuse and then when the big reveal happened all was forgiven no problem? Absolutely not. Maybe I’m petty?
I really loved the first book. It was such a fun ride. And then- I don’t know. It kind of felt flat with each book. I also did not see the point of Knox and Thane being together at all. It felt like they were only thrown together for the sake of having a MM “relationship”. And I use the term relationship loosely. It did not add to the story at all and just randomly popped up every once awhile like, “now kiss”.
Nothing really happened in this book until like 70% and by that point I was skimming lots of it just to get to the end.

Wow! Now that's the way to conclude a series! This is Book #3 of the Fated Mates of Shadowbone Academy series and you DO need to read the first two before delving into this one.
There was so much going on...so many emotions, betrayals, and surprises.
Questions get their answers after a lengthy journey of discovery. But of course, that leads to more...more anxiety and the need for more strength. Shade just wants her fated mates and to 'go home'...hide away together and have a HEA. Too many people are standing in her way...especially the shadow queen and a king and his creations from another realm.
Shade must wade through the plethora of new information she is getting, learn her true powers and figure out how to save the realms and all their inhabitants without fulfilling the prophecy of becoming the downfall of her loves.
I could not put this down. Started yesterday after dinner and literally saw the sun start to rise as I hit the last page. Awesome!

October 4, 2026In this third book in the series, Shade has survived the graduation games, but now the queen has discovered her mate bond. According to the prophecy, her mates are the ones who will finally end the war, but their bonded mate will destroy them. The queen has determined that Shade must be executed, but before that can happen, her best friend and demon queen rescues her. A tentative agreement is reached where Blake and her demon army will help with the Shadow realm's war effort, Shades will be confined to the Academy grounds, and their mate bond will never be forged. But making a deal with a shadow queen is more tricky than even they could have guessed.
I like how this series is interconnected with the world built in Game of Psychos, but in a separate realm. The familiar characters of Blake and her guys showing up added even more humor and tension to the situation and I loved it. The story is full of action and suspense, and also plenty of spice. I really enjoyed it.
Thank you to the author for providing this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.”

What an ending!
Now we’re back at the Academy with Shade, her mates, and her friends. Just as the Shadow Queen is about to end Shade’s life, her bestie shows up with her mates. Of course, the fact her bestie is the Demon Queen does make the Shadow Queen take notice and maybe think again about killing Shade. Honestly, I cannot praise this story highly enough. I love Mia Hartson’s writing, it just pulls me in and keeps me reading long past the time I should stop. Then we have the characters, all bigger than life with their own problems and Shade is just a human girl trying her best to survive as a student in the Shadowbone Academy. Against all odds, Shade is still alive and always doing what she feels to be the right thing, even if she knows she will end up being hurt by it. And…I really loved having Blake and her mates in this conclusion to the Fated Mates of Shadowbone Academy.

3.5 stars
I loved this series, but this last book wasn’t nearly as good, and the spice fell off. Every spicy scene was only a couple of sentences; they may as well have been fade to black. The book was so fast-paced there was barely time for relationship development. I wasn’t happy that FMC let Knox off the hook without even a token apology for all his abuse just because he learned new information that changed his mind about her. That guy literally abused her physically and tried to kill her a lot. I don’t care if he’s “devoted” now. I don’t forgive him. They also got almost no relationship development. He just stood around like a murderous puppy dog with sad/devoted eyes.
I’ll finish this review later when I get to my computer.

The final book in the Shadowbone Academy series
I was fully expecting the prophecy to be wrong, it wasn’t.
Shade continued to be the best person she could be, to help others, students and zenali alike.
Blake may have saved her at the end of the last book, but the queen is watching Shade even more closely. So are others.
The story bounces along, just as things go well, something else goes wrong. I was enthralled by the characters and the story. We finally meet the Xalgrith and discover what they want.
This book gives you all the answers you need and a huge feeling of hope.
I felt uplifted after finishing it.

Ugh I hate to say it but I really did not like Shade in this book. She became this weak, guilty, crying mess for most of the book. She was so funny and tough the other 2 books that this was a major let down.
There also was hardly any of the plot on the mates and their relationship. They were written almost like an after thought and then, hey let’s bond!
I also got real sick of hearing about the prophesy. At a certain point it just became so redundant and that everyone was oblivious to the true meaning of it just became obnoxious.
It was a pretty huge let down of an ending. Also why was there no bonus epilogue?! Major fail.

I loved the first few books and Shades character , but in this book I just felt Shade was so annoying . There wasn’t much character building for her and she just came across badly written. Disappointed by the last book. Felt the plot was rushed and that most of the book was about Shade and her weak character.

The ending felt amazing. Such a war-filled trilogy needed a very emotional ending and it delivered.
I do wish we got more of the guys and their lives after everything went down.
The week after epilogue was great but I would have really enjoyed a further along epilogue as in a year later or something like that.
Either way, it was great and would recommend reading the whole trilogy.

This was such a fun and intriguing read! I loved the twists, the magic, and the danger woven throughout the story. The characters kept me hooked, and I was definitely rooting for them along the way. A great paranormal read for anyone who enjoys a little suspense, magic, and mayhem!

a beautiful wrap up
I’ve enjoyed this story.
I love a happy ending that isn’t entirely obvious, when you know it’ll end well but don’t guess the steps to get there. Her past story and how it helped her now was unexpected and I absolutely love that she shares the heroics with her girls instead of it being one person who comes through with everything.

Shade and her mates story has sadly come to an end. This third book is action packed, spicy, it’ll make you want to strangle some characters and hug others, and that ending……well you’ll just have to find out for yourself.

The conclusion of Shades story and the answers to all of the remaining questions.
Shade becomes a baddie
Blake and her men are back for bits and pieces
The prophecy unfolds but is not what they thought it was.
