I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me

Rate this book
The Grammy Award–winning, legendary producer, global hype-master, and King of Crunk, Lil Jon, on the story of his life and his transformation into the high-volume showman behind a musical evolution.

For decades, the Grammy Award–winning artist Lil Jon has captivated audiences with the high-energy, chant-heavy, and bass-driven musical style that has become uniquely his own. However, before Lil Jon began his reign as “The King of Crunk,” he was just Jonathan Smith, a kid from the suburbs of Atlanta discovering his love for music and performance.

Now, in I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me, Lil Jon peels back the layers of his larger-than-life persona for the first time, revealing the circumstances that led to the creation of his world-famous persona. He recounts his early exposure to music and his rapid rise in the Atlanta music scene, highlighting his pivotal role in shaping the city’s distinct hip-hop sound. Beyond the creation of massive hits like “Get Low” and “Yeah!,” Lil Jon opens up about the personal struggles that accompanied his fame, including creative burnout and the search for meaning beyond the stage. He explores his rediscovery of his passion for DJing and reinvents himself as a multifaceted artist and entrepreneur, only to face a heartbreak no parent should ever have to endure.

With candid voice and thoughtfulness, I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and authenticity, delivering an inspiring message to aspiring artists, entrepreneurs, and anyone who dares to defy expectations, embrace change, and find success on their own terms.

Wow! This book made me laugh, cry, and be inspired. I thought I was going to just read a fun book about music and an artist I had enjoyed all of my life, but it had so much more depth than I could have imagined. I had such a fun time with this read and am recommending it to everyone I know!

Honestly, who doesn’t love Lil Jon? This was a fascinating read. I’ll admit that this is one of the few memoirs I’ve read where I didn’t know much of anything involving the origin story essentially.

The idea of Lil Jon being a punk skateboarder kid gives me an immense sense of joy.

Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

PS: Yes, I’ve already preordered the audiobook because I have to hear him read it.

"Yeaaaaaaah!" is the distinct shout of Grammy Award-winning producer, hype-master, and King of Crunk, Lil Jon. He takes his high energy to the page in a new memoir appropriately titled I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me. It begins with him as a kid in the suburbs of Atlanta—he was just Jonathan Smith back then—to his musical evolution. He opens up about creative burnout, personal struggles, heartbreak, his passion for DJing, being a parent, and reinventing himself as a multifaceted artist.

What I love most about reading memoirs are intimate details that have not been shared publicly and little known facts. There is so much I learned about Lil Jon from this book! For example, he made the beat for Too $hort's "Blow the Whistle" in a session for E-40. I am quite impressed with all he's accomplished, pioneered, and survived—including the tragic loss of his son. Lil Jon gives an inspiring message to up-and-coming artists, entrepreneurs, and music fans. The message to embrace change and find success on your own terms is loud and clear.

Happy Pub Day to Lil Jon! I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me is officially on shelves.

• WHAT?!
• Lil Jon wrote a memoir.
• YEAH?
• Let's read it!
• OKAYYY!

I think anyone with a pulse knows of Lil Jon, but how well do you know him? You know him as the King of Crunk. But in this book, you get to know the man behind the pimp cup. This was really interesting! Lil Jon is so much more than you might expect on the surface. A go-getter, always willing to try the next thing, even if it isn't the cool thing, yet.

I recently finished reading I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me by Lil Jon. I devoured this book in less than 24 hours. It was that interesting. I had no idea how much Lil Jon has done in his lifetime. He begins the book by going over his early life, family history, how he fell in love with music, getting his first job at Skate Escape, and how his DJing began at his own parties when he was a teenager. From there the book goes into his career and his adult life up until now including pivoting back into DJing, and creating a Mediation album. On top of how much of his life he was willing to share with readers I was stunned by how much great life advice he has sprinkled throughout his book.

This book had me laughing, reminiscing, and ultimately crying after reading the epilogue. This book is a gift that has been shared with readers. I truly think that whether you grew up listening to Lil Jon or have no idea who he is; you can find enjoyment and wisdom in reading I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me by Lil Jon.

I always find it difficult to give a star rating to memoirs, but in this case there was absolutely nothing I could find to give this book anything less than 5 out of 5 stars. It really is an amazing book.

I want to give a huge thank you to NetGalley.com, authors, Lil Jon and Paul Cantor and Atria Books | Atria/Black Privilege Publishing to have the privilege of reading an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley & Atria for the eARC!

I grew up listening to Lil Jon & know most of his most popular songs. He has such an iconic personality that I was excited to read this & see things from his point of view. I loved reading how he got his start, his family, & all the lessons he learned. I really appreciated how authentic & honest he was, & wasn’t afraid to admit all those times he may have messed up. The epilogue was so beautifully written & I was crying by the end of it. You can tell he put a lot of heart into his story.

My only critique is the first couple chapters were a little disorganized & repetitive. There were a few sentences that explained the same thing with different words. I’m sure this has already been addressed in editing by this point, but it made it a little difficult to get through those parts of the book. I’m glad I stuck with it though because I’ve gained so much respect for Lil Jon’s story. He is a master at taking his current circumstances & turning them into something beneficial.

This is what I mean when I say that I will read absolutely anything put in front of me.
We all know and recognize Lil Jon and his music and so his story following the trajectory and including many of the hits we all know and love made it easy to breeze through this one.
I think this could have done with a bit more editing, as the first couple of chapters covered many of the same things and didn't read as clean as the end of the book, but eventually the book did pick up a pretty good flow.
I enjoyed hearing about his early days hustle and how he has navigated the changes in the industry. It was a very quick read and interesting.

I must admit I didn't know much about Lil Jon before having seen him on The Apprentice and then on his HGTV show - Lil Jon Wants To Do What.

Boy what a difference technology makes today compared to when Lil Jon was young and working at developing his craft. His persistence and hard work come through as well as his gratitude towards others and the realization that relationships are important. And while I'm sure I've heard some of his music at one time or another, I plan to give a listen to some of his hits.

As a millennial, I've been a Lil' Jon fan for years, so I was thrilled to see he had a memoir. I knew almost nothing about him beyond the music and his larger-than-life persona, and this book did not disappoint. It was honest, entertaining, and gave me a whole new appreciation for the man behind all the iconic "Yeah!" and "Okay!" moments.
