ARC Review

Being back in the beautiful world of Jaeda was everything. 🐉✨

Scales of Flame takes you on such an incredible adventure filled with loyalty, ancient magic and love. The world building and lore in this book are insanely brilliant and unlike anything I’ve read before.

As much as I loved having the opportunity to ARC read this, writing a review with zero spoilers is a challenge because I have SO much I want to talk about. 🫣

The magic system is so intricate and clever, and the way the dragons are woven into the story is next level amazing. And the sass on these dragons?! 😂 They had me cracking up so many times, I absolutely loved them.

Eldreth, my red haired king is easily one of my favourite book men. His unwavering loyalty and dedication to Serae is felt in every interaction between them, even during moments of tension and fallout. 🥹

Serae is an incredible FMC. She’s strong minded, completely selfless and adapts to everything thrown at her. Her bond with her dragon is one of my favourite relationships in this book, and I wish I could talk about this more but for now you have to trust me!

We’re also treated to multiple POVs, each adding so much depth and intrigue to the story. I have a particularly special place in my heart for Ellan, his wit, humour and loyalty make him so loveable and I can’t wait to see where his character goes.

Serae and Eldreth are back in this sequel, and this time they must save the world from the darkness. They are tasked by the Great Dragon to close all of the magical doors to ensure the darkness doesn’t spread further in the Mortal realm. With the help of Bale and some newfound Dragonbound, Serae enters the dream realm to do just that, but the secrets and betrayals they all encounter will have them wondering if they will ever get back home.

I loved the first book; I felt like it had everything I need in an epic romantasy. This one was good, but I felt like it was lacking a key scene describing HOW Serae and the other Dragonbound got to The Door of Bone. Some of the fight scenes were a little long and drawn out, and I felt like shortening these and adding in their trip to the Bone Door would have made it much more well-rounded. That being said, there were still major plot twists and betrayals that made for excellent reading, and I honestly never saw them coming. Still a good read overall if you like bonded mates, betrayal, dragons, a unique magical system, and political intrigue, this is for you.

An immersive continuation of Jaeda's story that expands the mythology and dragon lore in genuinely thrilling ways. Serae remains a strong, selfless heroine, and her bond with Vaya'la deepens meaningfully as she and Bale take on the impossible task of closing the Great Doors between realms. Eldreth continues to shine as a devoted, loyal love interest, and the sibling dynamic between Serae and Bale adds real warmth alongside the political scheming and looming darkness threatening the realm. Multiple POVs, including scene stealing moments from Ellan, add welcome depth and humor throughout. The magic system and dragon mythology are richly detailed and inventive, though the middle stretch drags a bit with extended travel and heavy exposition, and a key transitional scene explaining how the characters reach the Door of Bone feels notably missing. Some fight sequences also run longer than needed. Even so, the plot twists and betrayals land as genuine surprises, and the final stretch pulls everything back together with real momentum. A satisfying, lore rich sequel for fans of bonded mates, political intrigue, and dragon-filled epic fantasy.

I was so happy to be back in this world! I missed the ancient magic and lore. And the TWISTS.... betrayals ....epic battles... this book packed a lot in with a well fleshed out plot of all the romantasy things you could love. Even though it is a book 2, the romantic tension between Serae and Eldreth is still TENSE at first and I loved watching it transform to just resolute loyalty and devotion.

There is so much more depth given to this book with the additional POVs. I'm trying to avoid spoilers but there is a lot more to the dragon bonds that predates our current world, there are so many intricate layers you can't even IMAGINE. The dragons are actually unexpectedly funny and cheeky? And they have no problem telling it like it is and calling out any potential ridiculousness & trying to correct it.

Also, personally I feel that Bale really stole the show in this book. There was so much he has to overcome and contend with in this book, my heart really broke for him between the last book and this one.

All in all, an enjoyable book 2! The middle area with the traveling did drag the pacing down, but a 4 star nonetheless!

So glad to be back in this fantastic and magical world.
Serae gotta be one of my favorite mfc of this year, it's so easy to empathize with her and root for her, and Eldreth is her best companion. But now her brother takes all the flowers because I found his chapters so much more interesting.
The lore I found interesting in the first book, this time is a little bit more slow and drags especially through the first 10 chapters, took me ages to get through those but then I found myself liking it more in the second part.
Anyways, it's not as good as the first book sadly, the plotwist are not as good and the vibes are just not the same, needed more explanation and less action I believe.

All in all I definitely enjoyed this book. The story continued on from the first book. Some questions were answered and others were formed. The first half of the book did feel like it moved very slow. It took me a while to get through it. Once I got about halfway though it definitely started to pick up and I couldn’t put it down. I am looking forward to the next book!

Meghan Le Fay does it again! Dare I say,... she has managed to bypass the dreaded sophomore slump! This book is even better than the first! I loved getting to see more of the world and learning more about the dream realm and the dragons. I can't wait for book 3!!
