This is the second book in this series featuring the reporter, Hyder Ali. Following on from his success in cracking the TriGate scandal in the previous episode, Hyder is now back as a reporter with the Daily Times in Franklin and has been given his own successful column ‘Hyder Reports’. When a foreign scientist working for the Centre for Inland Waters is found dead in bizarre circumstances, Hyder starts working on the story hoping to find an interesting story for his column. His old friend Detective Nolan has been assigned to the crime and they soon start working together again chasing up clues to uncover a plot that is more involved than a simple murder. When Hyder is repeatedly scooped by a freelancer called Echo Rose with her own blog “The Merchant of Truth”, he suspects that she is getting her information by illegal hacking and sets out to find out who she is.

I enjoyed this novel, the plot was intriguing and the introduction of another ‘rogue’ reporter competing with Hyder made it interesting. I found the writing a little patchy in places, mostly in descriptive sections early in the book, but it became a lot more fluid in sections of dialogue or action and did not detract from the story. I liked the character of Echo Rose, the ‘rogue reporter’ and hope we see her again in future episodes. 3.5★

I have read most of the reporter series now and I found them all very readable. The level of detail is exceptional and I am very excited to find stories about a (in our white Anglo-Saxon society) character who is not the same as us.

The Character of Hyder Ali is really cool. Believable and exciting. The plots are intricate and contain enough twists and turns to keep life interesting and to keep the page turning, but it is the characters and their relationships (the good and the bad) that make these books so easy to read.

Many times in one of my bookclubs I find myself saying. "I really don't care a jot about this or that character. I am not interested in their lives or what they do, be it good or bad."

NOT the case with the reporter series. I felt I could relate in some way to all of the characters. And the use of a reporter rather than a lawyer or a cop or a PI is really good as well. A neat device. Nicely handled.

I want more of these books. Have just downloaded The Crystal Towers to try something different. I do not expect to be disappointed.

Get a Proofreader!

Three stars. This is the second Fincham book I have read. The books are short, and the characters appealing. I liked learning more about the Moslem faith and family life. Plotting was pretty generic, and the eventual ending was predictable halfway through. Still, I would read more in the series if I weren't so annoyed by the numerous proofreading errors. Why go to the trouble of writing a book, when you can't be bothered to see that it is edited properly?

Tense

Fincham has gotten to be one of my top go to authors. This is my first of the Hyderabad Ali but I have been stacking up my library with other offerings by Gingham.

This story introduces us to another reporter, Echo Rose, who writes her own independent crime blog which soon crosses over unwanted onto Hyder's turf.
In addition to a mystery Fincham provides us with a little peek into Pakistani family dynamics and the Muslim Wedding rites and ceremonies.
As good solid read.

Good story

Hyder Ali is now a full fledged reporter for the Daily News . A horrific murder occurs at a local research company . His story is sabotaged by an online news blog by Echo Rose . There is good cultural discussion about Muslim culture that adds interest to the story .

Rogue reporter Echo Rose of the Merchant of Truth newspaper gets the scoop before Hydra, with evidence they say is missing. Who is this person but and alias, doing the scoops for revenge, since she couldn’t get hired, it backfires when the one that does the hacking for her is brutally killed, will she be the next. Nolan and Hyder with honesty and integrity work well together. Good series

This was an Interesting story and had a lot of cultural issues that were introduced that I was not aware of. The story has many facets and they all came together nicely at the end. I will read more from this author.

A mystery slowly unravelled

This was a GREAT mystery! Chose this rating because the language was clean and there were no sexual scenes to skip over. Will recommend. Book 1 was great too. Starting on Book 3 now.👍

whoa! 3.5 stars

Intense culture-clash/socio-economic/PSTD/graft murder mystery mixing Middle Eastern, American, East Indian and middle America into a gripping, hair-raising thriller. Insight into the genesis of Echo Rose (read all of the “Rose” series available first).

Hyde r the hero now is back on the story trail.

Hyde r the hero now is back on the story trail.

As much as I enjoyed book one, I think I liked book two even more. I enjoyed Hyders new role at the newspaper; the harmony of the main characters, bringing back members of Hyder's family, as well as Detective's Nolan and Lopez.

This time the story Hyder Is after has him being followed by a secret blogger who uses unsavory tactics get the full story and beat Hyder to publication. Regrettably Echo Rose gets into something bigger than she and Hyder together can handle: something that has caused the torture death of at least two people already and drags Hyder's family into the fray. Meanwhile detective Nolan is still relying on alcohol to numbs his personal losses, but when the FBI asks for him personally to assist on a case, he slowly pulls himself free of the bottle, focusing all of his professional experience and intuition on the tasks at hand, in a case that has him crossing paths with Hyder once again.

Our man nails his nemesis

An absorbing follow-up to the Silent Reporter, as we accompany our man on his dangerous journey to uncover the unscrupulous and murderous methods employed by a popular local businessman with greater political ambitions. Hyder Ali finds himself working along side Detective Nolan again and an FBI agent as well as a new and unexpected ally in increasingly more sanguinary situations, ultimately placing his closest loved ones in the greatest peril.
This was a genuinely enjoyable sequel to the first in what will hopefully be a superb series and shadowing our rogue reporter was quite riveting.
