A helicopter dad nearly spins out of control as his sons struggle to master the knuckleball—and perhaps save baseball’s most storied pitch from extinction.
The knuckleball is the only skill that can elevate an athlete without a superjock’s speed, strength, or explosive power to the Hall of Fame. Thrown without spin, it darts around unpredictably for reasons physicists and engineers labor to explain. It’s a secret weapon every pitcher should want to master, so why is the knuckleball close to extinction?
When a father discovers his baseball-crazed sons have the knack for the knuck, they begin a decade-long, cross-country quest to perfect the pitch. Along the way they meet the greatest to throw it, the scientists investigating its mysterious movement, sabermetricians, and executives who hope to resurrect it. The aspiring knucklers also learn lessons they’ll use off the field, proving that when life throws them curves, they have something to throw back.
I don't like watching baseball being played as much as I love a good baseball story with action scenes and relationship stuff. This book delivers on both. It is a beautifully written, multi-level story about three boys working to master the knuckleball and their dad's big dream: Could one of them get on a college team and, dare he hope, make it to the pros? This self-proclaimed 'helicopter dad' struggles with the question, "Does my kid want this as much as me?" Regardless of his struggle, he soldiers on supporting his kids by building a batting/pitching cage in his back yard, buying all of the latest baseball gadgets, and flying them around the country to participate in knuckleball clinics.
School of Hard Knucks is a multi-level story about the author's own childhood baseball aspirations, his relationship with his dad, then his kids, and his marriage. It is the story of the knuckleball and the knuckleballers, sprinkled in with the science of the knuckleball pitch. It is a funny, serious, and heartwarming tale.
School of Hard Knucks is a book about trying to solve the mystery of the knuckleball as well as the fathers and sons who are brought together by America’s favorite pastime. The knuckleball is a pitch nearly as old as baseball. Mr. Gaffney’s book is well researched and delves into why a pitch that has been historically successful has fallen out of favor in an era obsessed with velocity and spin rate and the technology that measures it.
The knuckleball’s evolution throughout the modern baseball era is told alongside the author’s own experiences with his three sons as they learn to throw the pitch. What starts out as fun in the backyard evolves as the family seeks advice from some of Major League Baseball’s greatest knuckleballers. Traveling the country, they are mentored by retired professionals, including Phil Niekro, Charlie Hough, and Steven Wright.
The knuckleball requires commitment and dedication. It’s about slowing the ball down and killing the spin when everyone seems to want the opposite. School of Hard Knucks is about walking a different path and staying on it.
Brian Gaffney hits it out of the park with his book, The School of Hard Knucks. He shares his entertaining adventures teaching his 3 boys how to throw a knuckleball. The book is full of lessons from some of the best knuckleball throwers of all time with a great story to go with it. The clever ways that Gaffney shares his passion for baseball will keep you learning and laughing about America’s favorite pastime as you turn each page.
Great book for baseball geeks and every father who ever played catch with his kids. Gaffney's exhaustive research is a delight to read for baseball history buffs. Anecdotes from baseball legends like Bob Uecker and Buck Showalter make the book a joy to read. The larger story is the one about a father and his sons chasing the dream of playing baseball after high school. Can't wait for the sequel to learn how Ben does in college and maybe beyond.
I’ll admit, I was a little nervous that School of Hard Knucks would be a dry, technical book about how to throw a knuckleball. I was pleasantly surprised to discover it was so much more! Along with fascinating baseball facts and stories about the rare knuckleball pitch, the book offers heartfelt lessons about parenting, guiding your children, and navigating real life. It’s an enjoyable and thoughtful read for sports fans and families alike. I highly recommend it!
I knew nothing about the knuckleball before I read this wonderful book. I now know about the wonders and challenges of the knuckleball, but there is much more to this book. It is about a father's dedication, love, and sacrifices to his son as he grows from childhood to become a college pitcher. This book is written with great wit by a man who is not afraid to admit his mistakes.
