If I Break #3

Beautifully Broken

Rate this book
The conclusion to the If I Break Series.

Cal’s back and his arrival changes everything.

Lauren knew it was coming but what she didn’t think he’d bring with him was an ultimatum.

A choice.

One that Lauren feels trapped under. A choice she’s unsure will make a difference but could possibly change everything.

The ultimatum isn’t the only thing Cal’s got with him but answers. The ones Lauren so desperately craves. But the truth won’t only affect the lives of he and Lauren but everyone around them…and not everyone wants the truth to come out.

The good thing is Cal doesn’t give a F…

…There's two sides to every story. In this one there’s three.

Holy freaken hell!

What a whopper roller coaster ride this book was....

I might have some whiplash, in a good way offcourse...

Now if you're reading this book then you obviously following this series. We know about the beautiful Lauren who marries a gorgeous guy Cal only to have her world turned upside down in when she finds out the truth why Cal left her...

And then we met the sweet Chris.
Opposite to Cal in many ways but as the book progresses we actually see pieces of each of them in the other.

Now in the final installment ..... ( I'm not giving spoilers) all I can and will say is that YOU WERE not expecting this kind of ending.

Who wins... Cal, Chris?

Who does Lauren love? Who does she choose?

The truth will set you free.

Portia Moore keeps you entertained with her writing all the way.

I can't say this book is anything less than 5 stars. I loved this series!!!

Everything I believed in, that I held on to was a lie... Except her. She's my truth.

So originally on 2/2 - I posted "So... anyone else think that Chris/Cal caught his dad cheating on his mom and that is what caused his DID? ... anyone think it may have been with Lisa?...Chris/Cal's dad is a prick and I hope he gets what's coming to him. I NEED this book pronto!!!

Now, 2/28- OMG!!!! I can't believe some of these twists and turns! So, Lisa, .

Man, I didn't see some of this coming, which to me is always the sign of a good book. I like to be surprised and PM certainly surprised us with some of these events.

Cal Chris

It was great to get both Cal and Chris's points of view. I loved seeing the relationship of Lauren/Cal from his point of view, because you could see how much he really really loved her.

smile-nina-dobrev-actress-brunette-face-female-celebrities

Lauren has some grit. This situation is almost impossible, but she knew who she loved and she was willing to fight for him.

And then that part- you know which one I am talking about- WTF!! Props to you Ms. Moore for that one. Bravo.

BUT (there always is a but), while most of the secrets were exposed, but there were a few things that after the dust settled still irked me MAJORLY! I felt like the ending was rushed. After about 85%, all the pieces get tied into a nice little bow. And I did not like some of PM's choice of what happened to some of the characters. Plus, I wanted a scene with Cal and Caylen and I never got that :( So 4.5 for about 85% and then after 85% the rating goes down because the ending was...no bueno for me.

#1. Mr. Scott-
aaron-eckhart-8
what a complete asshole. His resolution was unjustified.

#2. Lisa-
image8
It was noted in the end acknowledgments that PM was considering writing Lisa's story. All I can ask is PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. Lisa's character doesn't deserve her own story. What she did was the epitome of extreme selfishness. I do not have any desire to relate to her or her choices. Her actions make me disgusted with her. She is someone who got what she wanted at the expense of so many others.

which brings me to
#3 Gwen-
u50i0qwf_copy_4216
If anyone deserves to have their story written with a happy ending, it's Gwen. Why is it that characters who do the wrong things get more storylines than characters who are good and wholesome? Are their stories not worth telling because they lack the filth of those who make terrible choices? I think Gwen's happy ending deserves to be written. A woman who faced extreme difficulties in life- not being able to conceive, having cancer, going through chemo, having a child with a mental illness, and then finding out that your husband ... talk about a tough life. Poor Gwen needs a new man, that can give her the life she deserves. So I'll start my campaign now Portia please write- #Gwenshappyending

I think overall I didn't feel resolution with this whole Amen Gwen.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED IT.

This is the 4th book in the series and it is by far my favorite one. It answers all my questions, it blows my mind away and it brings the best HEA for me.

The book made me say, “OMG”, “No wayyyy!!!”, “What, come again??!!” “Whoops, what? Say that again!!” and it shocked me so many times.

This book is MIND-BOGGLING, folks!

I once read “Love Me with Lies” by Tarryn Fisher and each book in the series made me believe something else. The writer played with the reader like a puppet in that series. Also, I read Black Lies by Alessandra Torre. In that book again, the writer played with us for a long while, making us believe in our assumptions, which were all far from the truth. Now, here, there is another mind game going on, with series of even more shocking revelations, each making your previous belief an invalid one.

I feel as if I have discovered a gem 😊 I have one more book to go before I complete this series but for now, I am so happy that I dared to read this series.

This book is definitely not suns and flowers. It is not the love story of a perfect hero & a perfect heroine. Everyone has their imperfections in this story. Their journey is torturing most of the time. It has its bumps and crazy moments.

But what an experience!

So if you are not afraid of getting hurt through it all, I can definitely recommend the experience. I have so many things to say about the book but anything I say will be a spoiler.

P.M. if you need more details…

Or wait wait… I am making recommendations etc but there is one more book to go. Because I got my HEA, I keep forgetting about it and I wonder what the hell it is about... Hmmm… I am kinda scared that my happiness will be shattered to pieces as the next book’s title is “Shattered Pieces”…

Oh God, wish me luck… Please let me keep my HEA...

***********************************************

This book has 3 point of views, and one chapter from a 4th point of view. So very interesting, fascinating, really…

I can say that this is one of the best series I have read (except for the MANY EDITING MISTAKES, of course 😊)

***********************************************

Some QUOTES from the book.

If you haven’t read the previous books, these quotations may include spoilers, albeit minor… Still proceed with caution.

“I want to give her something she always wanted. I sure as hell can’t do it by myself. But maybe both of us together, we can give her the prince charming she deserves.”

***

“Remember Lauren, everyone has an agenda. No matter how much they pretend not to,” he says.

***

You can’t outsmart the universe. It doesn’t make mistakes. It catches up with you. Sooner or later if you’re meant to be fucked, you will be.

“No matter what. Whatever happens—if anything were to happen—nothing, under any circumstances,” I take her hand and place it on my chest and hold it there, “will ever take you from here. Even if it doesn’t seem like it, always know how much I love you. I’ve never loved anyone as much as I love you, and even if I screw it up...”
She cups my face in her hand, “You’re scaring me. Is everything okay?” she asks, sitting up and staring at me. No it isn’t but I won’t think about that now.

***

How can I be mad at a woman who has decided to put up with someone like me, who when she looks at me, lets me know I’ve never known true love before her?

***

These two men that I love more than any other person besides my daughter... both cut me deeper than anyone else has been able to, they just use two different knives.

Yep... ya está lista la reseña COMPLETA, o sea... de toda la serie jajaja en el blog, la hice en una porque me los leí de corrido. :D jajaja
http://www.virivillarreal.com/2016/11...

Y como no se en cual libro poner el link... creo que lo pondré en todos jeje.
Por cierto, en cada reseña aquí en GR dejo algo relativo solo al libro :)

Me encantó.

Ok, so we went straight from quirky to naff soap dramarama in this, the final part of this twisting, turning tale.

Before going any further I should say this review will make zero sense unless you've read this. Just wanted to save you time.

I was loving the revelations and the angst right up until the moment Collin arrived.

Nooooooo.

So, ignoring Collin and disregarding the fact that Chris does little for me (for my heart belongs to Cal) the drama was a tad on the side of a late night soap for me. I could've coped with one revelation, but there was one thing after another and when that happens, I become disengaged. Actually I just roll my eyes and think, not again. So yeah, clever plotting but a bit much for me.

Overall though, this has been an excellent series where the mystery has ramped up a notch with every episode, so I guess the payoff had to be something pretty jaw dropping and it truly was.

Recommended if you enjoyed a twisty, turny, angsty tale that messes with your mind or if if you love reading writers like Aleatha Romig or Tarryn Fisher then you'll love this.

Loooved!!!! All the angst, the secrets, the revelations!!! And Cal’s POV!!!! I loved everything. Seriously, when I started Book 1 I almost gave up a few times but I’m so glad I stuck with this cause it was so worth it. Loved how everything came together in the end and I totally want to read more from these characters.

Advanced Reading Copy (ARC) provided by Portia Moore for an honest review!

Sooooo this book..... 4 stars! :D

This is definitely a good book, and well worth the read. Why not 5 stars? Well, for one thing this book was missing a lot of the things that I was counting on to be there

Things I needed to happen in this book:

1)
Lauren to stand up to Cal-- I know she loves him and all, but like she needs to confront Cal about why he didn't love her enough to tell her about the DID thing... and also the fact that he doesnt stay with her when he learns that his wife is PREGNANT... even if his mom has cancer... thats when you tell the truth, bro.

Okay, this happened.... but not to the extent that I would have liked. While she really did stand up to him(and I really loved that) there were just some things that she let go that I was expected bigger explanations for why Cal left her. And he NEVER really just like flat out apologizes for leaving her....it's not that he doesn't apologize, and we see his view, but it just wasn't enough for me.

description

And I feel like Lauren just forgives things too easily with everyone! Seriously, there was this point in the book where Lauren feels bad for Cal's dad! like WTF was happening there???

description

2)This needs to happen to Chris's dad at one point:

description

yeah, that part was awesome
description

3) I really need a Cal + Chris to happen. Like seriously. Now.

Soooo again.... BUT it was such a short portion of the book!!! I feel like such a short time was spent on this, and I really expected this to be a big part of this book.... :(

And the one last thing I have a HUGE problem with?? THE ENDING. LIKE WTF CAL!!! THAT IS NOT NORMAL!
This series always has Jerry Springer references, and it wasn't till the end, till I really felt like I was reading a transcript of that show... like seirously, it was a bit too dramatic for me.

That said, it was still an AWESOME book. I LOVEEDDDDDD parts when Cal came back, and seriously, I was like sooooooooooo happy at the end

description

Still, I can't help but hope we got the end a little differently.

Nice conclusion to Laren/Cal/Chris's journey. With this crazy subject matter I found my heart broke for each of these characters and I just wanted them to find their peace. There was a lot going on and backstory coming to light soi at times I really had to focus so I wouldn't get lost or confused. I really would of liked a bit more for the ending but all in all I really enjoyed this series and my questions were answered.

4.5 Ping-Pong Stars!

Now, that's a weird tittle!
==========================

Anyway, I'm so glad that there's series novel that made me hooked from the first book till the last.

This is the last book of If I Break series. In here, we get the complete puzzles of what happened on the first book If I Break on Cal's POV. On the first book, there were many scene that needed explanation (indeed), so we got the final answers here....

In this book, we have:

Cal, the a**hole that you can't help but love him... *Ahem!*

Chris, the dummy that you can't help but adore.... :p

And our heroine,

The wonder woman Lauren!

God, I loved her!!

description

About the main characers...

Lauren loves Cal. Lauren loves Chris. Cal and Chris love Lauren.

Lauren Lauren

Cal and Chris hate each other so damn much. They want to banish each other existence!!

As for my tittle, it felt like that to me of Lauren. I mean, the woman bounce from here and there, Cal to Chris and little bit of Collin and then back to Cal again.. @.@

About the sex... *wink*

Sex with Chris is sweet...

Sex with Cal? ...HOT DAMN! Ha! Anything with Cal is hot hot hot!

description

Actually, it was : FUCK ME breathless...

Their reunite sex was scorching!

- ..."You'd be bored with Chris in six months," he says, his lips inches away from mine.

- ..."You belong to me. Just me," he says in my ears as he continues.

- ..."Chris could never do this to you," he moans in my ear. I close my eyes and bite my lip but it doesn't help.

"Let's be honest.. There isn't a choice.. You don't get to choose. I'm the only option," he taunts me, pushing deeper into me.

Hard to believe that it happened only once!! Wow...really this book is lack of sex if I may say...BUT the story got me hooked! And I was like "What will happen on the next chapter?" every chapter. Like the first book, the time plot was past and present story about Lauren and Cal. This made me had to focus hard.

My most favorite part was, where Cal telling Lauren he's leaving her. It was so sad... and even tough it's recalling of the same scene in book #1, it still make me sobbing. *ugly cries*

And then, when Chris drop the bomb after dinner... Oh my God... poor Mrs. Scott :'(
That was a HUGE blow! Created by Mr. Scott & Chris's best friend. Delivered by the mighty Chris.

No wonder Cal freaking loathe Mr. Scott. And Mr. Scott don't like Cal. Well, Cal knows his dirty secret meanwhile Chris didn't( Well, until before that dinner disaster....). And Mr. Scott wants to keep it that way that's why he tried his hardest to make Cal never "around".

This book full of many puzzle from the start. I thought when Cal finally back it will solve everything. But turned out I was wrong! LOL. We will find the final answer on the final chapter. So long eh.. but it didn't feel like that at all. at least to me... :D This author really good in making reading this book is not boring in every chapter.

description

LOL!!

Anyway, Thank you Portia Moore. Great story!

Thank you, so much Ms. Moore for giving me an ARC of Beautifully Broken. This series has open my eyes to such amazing work and beauty. I'm so sad to see this series end but I'm happy that Lauren got a happy ending. This was a wonder why to end the series and the characters that we all got to love.

The twist and turns this book had made me feel like a roller coaster totally didn't see any of it coming. But the age old question is Chris or Cal? Coming into this book I didn't know what one to choose but when I ended it, I chose both even though they're the same person they are two different and separate personalities.

Such a marvelous and satisfying read that will make you want to devour the whole book but also wish it will never end. Portia Moore did a brilliant job entertaining you with the amazing characters and words written in this novel. Totally worth spending money on.

I have waited forever for this book. Let me begin by clarifying that THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS

Positives:
- I will start by saying that I was a little worried about the whole Cal's POV. Normally, when authors write the same scene from a different POV (because some of the moments we saw through Cal's POV we'd already seen from Lauren's) it feels a little repetitive. But nope! Not this book! You absolutely nailed the two different perspectives and made the scenes just as authentic. I was both enthralled and relieved. Furthermore, Cal's persona was portrayed so well in his Chapters I could basically give you an A+++ brilliant!

- I enjoyed the fact that Lauren got some of her "fire/spark" back as Cal put it

- I actually learned to like Chris more but Cal will always have my heart

Negatives:

- I think it was really rushed which is such a shame. The climactic moment we'd been waiting for was over within like a chapter. What the hell? Suddenly Cal is a murderer and he's so fixated on that he has no fucks to give about anything else. Mmm, okay then.

- I wanted some form of closure from Lauren/Cal. Not closure as such actually, that's the wrong way to put it but a scene in which we see them acknowledge everything and Cal actually explains everything to her (we know why he did what he did but does Lauren truly?). There was a lot of Lauren telling Chris that she loves both of them etc. but I wanted that with Cal. I know it's stupid because it's the same person but because Lauren fell in love/married Cal - I thought there'd be a scene acknowledging all the history/hell that they'd been through but oh well. That was the biggest downfall for me personally, the lack of the original couple I had fallen in love with. When I think about it, Cal only truly came back for that lustful rough sex scene and then he was gone! (He did come back briefly when the whole dad thing happened too but there wasn't really a moment between them). I just thought that their relationship was better than that. More meaningful. I wanted an "I'm sorry I put you through hell but you're the best thing that's ever happened to me" with Cal towards the end. The book was good though. I don't think I'll love anything as passionately as I loved If I Break because that book was goddamn incredible and one of my favourite books of all time (and I'm a big critic!). It's unfair of me to compare it to that I think lol!

- Nothing about how the integration came about which ties with what I said on the earlier point. Suddenly Cal is okay with Chris? Like how did it happen? Who did he develop into as both? What was Lauren's reaction on it?

- WHERE WAS HILLARY AND HER BRILLIANT COMMENTARY HAHA

Overall, it was much better than book 2 but the ending left a lot to be desired. Very well written though overall. I didn't hate it don't get me wrong, it didn't leave me angry, it didn't leave me confused, it just didn't leave me ecstatic and gleefully happy like book 1 did. I think the problem was that I didn't feel connected to the renewing of vows because I was disconnected from her relationship with Christopher Cal Scott because I don't know what he's like! You had me with Cal/Lauren relationship 110% because I'd spent the whole of If I Break falling in love with them and that pairing and I wasn't entirely sure about Chris (being completely honest I wasn't keen haha) but perhaps together they were perfect but how do I know because I didn't see what he was like? I'm just disappointed because I didn't feel anything towards the end and I wanted to really badly. I was like "mm, ok then" which is such a shame.

Thank you Portia though for writing this series!

this book gave me life....I loved the fact that I was able to see things from Cal's point of view...loved seeing a softer side to him and seeing Chris get angry... loved the various twists in the book...kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time...all questions where answered in this one...
overall, this book was my favourite of all three because I was able to see seemingly selfish characters put love before their egos... The ending was perfect and I felt very emotional reading it..
I look forward to more of Portia's amazing work

I liked it - i liked the whole story. But the crescendo of the story was made out to be so big, and it all just ended too quickly. The last chapter explained it all, and right away - 6 months later every problem is fixed. It just seemed too easy-a-fix for such a complicated situation.

Oh wow, I literally can’t stop reading these books.

I’m more intrigued by this storyline having adding Collin into the mix has been insane. Knowing there could be more Alter’s is an insane thought and Lauren, she’s so freaking strong to deal with it all. Not knowing who you’re going to wake up to must be so damn terrifying.

Watching their backstory unravel was absolutely heartbreaking, the things this poor boy had to go through is insane and wow, I feel for him.

Can’t wait to read the next book!

Note: I received an ARC from the author in exchange for a review.

"Unraveling. If I had to describe a state that I’m in that would be it. I’m coming apart. He made me come apart again and again until I fell into pieces...

description
...Pieces he broke me into and threw into the deep-end of what’s now my life, and I’m drowning."

description

...And that's a wrap for the If I Break series!

I've definitely had my fair share of cliffhangers with this trilogy, and even though I've almost scratched out all my hair because of every frustrated state it has left me one installment after another, I can honestly and truly say that I will miss sulking in the corner while waiting for the next book to come!

I've been blessed with an ARC of Beautifully Broken by the lovely Portia Moore and I want to apologize for only creating a book review this late, especially because it's really long overdue. I've been very busy with school and had difficulty in finding time for my books. But when I did finally managed to squeeze in a few reads here and there, and I got to finish this conclusion to the series, I WANTED TO CRY! I was just beyond elated! This series has took me to--cliche as it may sound--a rollercoaster ride.

Cal or Chris or Collin or whoever alter was taking over--I actually didn't care anymore. Like Lauren, I have grown to love them all. I mean, it's like your own personal 3-in-1 man candy! Who doesn't want that?

But in all seriousness, I really admire Lauren for sticking with Chris/Cal and never giving up on him, especially when his DID was taking place. If I were her, I'd had a hard time dealing with different alters taking over in unexpected times. If there's something I'd like to give to Lauren, it's A+ for loyalty!
"Did you miss me?"

"Of course I did."

"Did you miss me when you were with him?"

"Especially when I was with him."

How Lauren managed to not fully breakdown and deal with all the crap given to her, I don't know. How she learned to love her husband with massive DID and accepted all his alters was also beyond me. Maybe it was loyalty? Maybe perseverance? Maybe it was for the sake of Caylen? But in the end, we all knew it was because of love.
"I love this man every day, every part of him, and I will for the rest of my life. My beautifully broken Prince Charming and I wouldn’t prefer him any other way."

Of course, drama was ever so present in this series, and this last installment was a whirlwind of it. Plot twist after plot twist. Yep, those killed me as well. Good thing Portia knew how to sew them together to create a good story. I loved how there was a right amount of romance, and how it balanced with every element of the story. Family issues, friendship, parent-child relationship, and even a little bit of science was nicely mixed into the concept.
"There is far more to me than meets the eye. It’s my secret weapon, my gift, and my curse. But every curse can be used to your advantage if you can wield it just right."

But of course, my favorite parts would have to be between Lauren and Chris/Cal. What drew me into this series is the dynamic between the two (any of the alters will do. Haha.)
"A new start.

That’s what he asked for. I told him no, because I don’t think we need one. Our history wasn’t the best but it’s made us who we are. Each step of the way, though bumpy, has made us who we are today."

One issue I have though was the part nearing the end. I wish I could've gotten more when Chris/Cal was on the process of getting better. I really wanted to immerse myself on how the "integration" was going to happen. I felt like that part was kind of rushed, so I was slightly disappointed I didn't get to read about it as much. Not nonetheless, I still loved the book!

Anyway, what a conclusion to the If I Break series!

4.5 stars!

Jeses crust, is there literally anymore drama that could be squashed into this convoluted dogs breakfast of a story. Three books deep and I have next to no idea why we needed three books for this. Half of the entire series is a re hash of past events from different POV’s. I generally hate back and forth timelines, they’re too disruptive and too often they serve aren’t effective. I get that they’re supposed to give us an insight into the building of the MC’s relationships, but often (as is the case here) they’re just very fucking boring.

I’m pretty sure the part I officially decided “this sucks” was the nearly half a whole chapter dedicated to the MC’s making burgers. There were definitely brief moments of, yknow, *thoughts and feelings* but Jeses crust, we don’t need an entire page detailing the ingredients and putting together of a basic homemade burger.

As I said, the issue here is the convolution. I can suspend belief and accept this is a split-personality ‘Me Myself & Irene’ plotline. I can accept the bitchy OW (who, tbh yes she’s an asshole but truly, Chris and his family and Lauren ultimately did her dirty with his shit).

But there is so much freaking OTT drama ON TOP of all that - because having a split personality is not drama llama enough so it seems. Noooo, sir. Please give me a healthy dose of “my dad treats my wife like shit for unknown reasons which turn out to be he had an affair with my best friend in high school and they have a love child together and that triggered my split personality who also misremembers my childhood trauma bc I’m also adopted which has never been mentioned until now and also I though my bio dad murdered my mom but actually my mom made me pull the trigger so that’s why I suck at being a human being”.

This book is just not well written enough to pull off this much drama well. Bless.
