When the Ice Breaks: Emotional Slow-Burn Romance

Sometimes the bravest comeback is choosing to stay.

Nova Clark was once America’s ice princess—until a devastating fall and a public betrayal sent her into hiding. Now she’s at Cloudrest Recovery Center in the Colorado mountains, determined to heal in private and never trust a partner—on or off the ice—again.

Reid Mallory didn’t come to Cloudrest for complications. The steady, guarded physical therapist has rebuilt his life on discipline and emotional distance—and falling for a world-famous skater who plans to disappear the moment she’s strong enough isn’t part of the plan.

But quiet training sessions turn into late-night conversations. Professional boundaries blur into lingering touches. And in the safety of being truly seen, something deeper begins to thaw.

For the first time, Nova isn’t performing. And Reid isn’t bracing for goodbye.

When Nova’s past resurfaces—and the outside world comes looking for her—she must decide whether hiding is safer than risking her heart.

At Cloudrest, healing comes first. But staying might be the bravest step of all.

When the Ice Breaks is a closed-door, forced-proximity romance about public failure, private healing, and choosing to stay.

Welcome to Cloudrest. A sanctuary for healing. I did read the prequel and I think that gave a better foundation for how Cloudrest came to be. I would definitely recommend starting with that novella.

At the end of Where the Air is Thin you get a glimpse of Novas story. An “ice princess” figure skater with injuries that go deeper than her fractured bone. Trust shattered. Identity questioned. Completely shut down to the outside world. Avoiding therapy in every sense.

Reid. An ex army physical therapist with emotional scars deeper than the ocean. Running, avoiding, exiting is his speciality.

Two broken people who find each other. it wasn’t a cutesy hallmark style love story. It was raw and real. Two people healing from injuries far deeper than the surface. Who were challenged by multiple layers. Their trust was tested. Their character questioned. It wasn’t rushed. You felt every emotion that Nova and Reid felt. You felt like you were healing with them. It was a story about redemption and finding your truest self.

✨Memorable quote : “The question isn’t whether you can avoid choosing wrong….its whether you want to choose differently”✨

This was a great read. And I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

A patient/therapist romance slowly develops between renowned pairs figure skater Nova Clark and her physical therapist Reid Mallory at Cloudrest mountain lodge in Summit Springs, Colorado in this clean slow-burn romance. Nova arrives at Cloudrest not sure it’s where she should be and totally out of sorts with everything that has gone wrong in her life since the devastating fall on the ice. But the team at Cloudrest are up for the challenge and know just how to bring her around to understanding that this will work and even though she threatens to be reassigned after her first session with the easygoing, practical all-seeing Reid, she soon realizes he’s the best for her. It’s a slow-burn romance and the pace of the book is slow and easy also but it suits the mountain lodge setting. The self-struggles the two face seemed to get a little redundant but overall I felt the story had some real emotion to it, had some bright and fun times on the ice and events that took place around the lodge and I really enjoyed the characters including several of the secondary characters. It’s a good look at how being in the limelight can harm the way a person sees themselves and allows others to define them.

Briar Hope has quickly become an auto-read author for me, so I was really excited to see her step into a full-length novel and she did not disappoint.

When the Ice Breaks is a heartfelt story centered on healing, growth, and finding yourself after heartbreak. The emotional journey felt genuine and thoughtfully developed, and I really appreciated how the story took its time showing that process rather than rushing it. I felt fully immersed in the characters’ experiences and struggles.

This is a clean, closed-door romance that focuses more on emotional connection and personal healing than physical intimacy. One of the standout themes was the contrast between public failure and private healing, which added a lot of depth to the story.

The only thing that I could change is the communication between the main characters. I found myself wanting a bit more openness at times. That said, it still felt realistic and didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment.

Overall, this was a touching and satisfying romance, and the perfect palate cleanser when I needed something a little softer and more reflective.

This was a decent story about personal recovery - of an injury and from past hurts. The FMC, Nova, is a champion figure skater who was been injured and dumped by her boyfriend/skating partner. She heads to Cloudrest for physical therapy and healing where she meets Reid, a physical therapist with hurts of his own.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I don't know that I will read more in the series though. I found it a little slow, and there was depth missing in the romance. Why did Nova and Reid even like each other? The first half of the book was so focused on the forbidden aspect of their relationship that it seemed like the actual development was lacking.

I also wanted more details about Cloudrest. It felt like information was missing as to what the program was like there and the roles of the secondary characters.

The book picked up at about 70%, though. There was some conflict and then the struggle to overcome it. It was much more interesting after that.

*Injured figure skater FMC
*Closed-off physical therapist MMC
*Forbidden (temporarily) romance
*Closed door.

Emotional in the best way!

This book was so good. It took me by surprise in its slow, steady, building to something meaningful way! I loved Nova and Reid. Nova, injured figure skater found herself at Cloudrest Recovery for PT. That's where Reid comes in. He is calm, methodical, always calculating things, and unfortunately closes off when things feel real. Nova is scared. She doesnt know who she is if she isn't moving and performing. Somewhere along the way these two start to feel but never cross a line until after she is done being his patient. When trials come will they step up or let fear win? This was so good, emotional in the best way!

This is Book 1 of the Cloudrest Recovery Romances series. And a wonderful start it is! Look forward to more from this world.

'Perfect for readers who love gentle tension, character-driven romance, and soft emotional payoffs.'

The characters drove the storyline and they were so very appealing and likeable and complicated and absolutely perfect together. Plot was intriguing and intense and well paced and. World building was solidly drawn and impressive. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

I saw this book and thought that the blurb sounded interesting, a bit different from my current reads.

When The Ice Breaks is about the FMC Nova recovering after an injury while skating with her partner. At first she’s closed off and reluctant about the process and her PT the MMC Reid.

As time goes by they develop a routine and respect for each other. They both feel that something more is developing between them.

I rated this a 3 star as it was a bit lack lustre and not much story wise. Was a quick read, had hoped for more it just felt like more could have been done with the storyline.

This is a story of healing physically and mentally, starting over and learning to trust so you can love again. A unique and interesting read that was realistic, emotional and had depth without being overwhelming. I enjoyed the FMC and MMC characters slowly getting to know each other. The author structured the story and characters so that it all felt genuine and not feel rushed. Very well written and worth reading! Looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

This writer is an intenser researcher. The details are awesome. The story is thrilling. I loved the story and the ways it unfolded. The writer was careful to describe, but not making it boring. It makes you want to read more to understand. Bravo, this is a winner
