Charles Demuth Collector’s Edition Art Gallery - A Comprehensive Collection of the Artist's Artwork throughout his Lifetime with over 225 Works of Art. American watercolorist who turned to oils late in his career, developing a style of painting known as Precisionism.
My recent stops at The Barnes Foundation and the Whitney Museum included some paintings by Charles Demuth. This artist rarely left Lancaster, Pennsylvania but did get to Europe just before World War I and saw the Cubist efforts of Braque and Picasso. Since I, too, enjoy the geometric deconstruction of form that was at the core of Cubism, I found Demuth’s experiments very engaging.
Demuth often melds his Cubist influence with a focus on the face of “modern” technology. He often chooses a utilitarian factory or piece of equipment. He renders the subject simply but with an underlying grandeur.
Though this book is sorely lacking a docent to lead me through all of the associations in each picture, it is a hearty collection of Demuth’s work. It confirmed for me that I seem to enjoy his Cubist experiments and depictions of theater more than his botanical efforts. You may see these differently. [Note that I viewed them on my Kindle Fire and the individual images were excellent allowing me to see as much detail as I could wish.]
