Beyond Reason

Rate this book
A 14th century love story set among the rugged hills of Northern England.

Forced into service at Glendennan Castle, Isobel is a young, destitute widow with an uncertain future. Under the threat of debtor’s prison, she must await the return of her liege-lord in order to learn of her fate.

Robert Montgomery, having served his time on the battlefields of France, is eager to return to England and his beloved Glendennan. As thanks for his loyalty to the crown, he's granted the hand of a wealthy baron's daughter. The girl is, by all accounts, a maiden of great beauty. Before Robert leaves for England, the betrothal is finalized and the marriage date set.

His future seems certain ... until he meets Isobel.

I just finished an outstanding book!!

Beyond Reason is a MOST WONDERFUL book!! I laughed, I cried, I rejoiced, I grieved, I was enraged at the evil, and I felt the incredible feelings of being in love. Robert and Isabel’s love story filled my heart. Such a perfect match and enduring love. Highs and lows. Happiness and completion that could be found with none other, mixed with tragedy and heartache and finally such sweetness.
I cannot praise the author enough. This lady can write! She brought these characters to life! She has a gift of creating an individual in such a real way. Nothing trite about her characters or storytelling. Each character jumps from the page be they good or evil. Even the horses have character!! She amazes me. She’s descriptive of the environment, the time period, the castles, etc and in all things you feel like you’re a part of the scene. There are authors who are very good at what they do, and some not so much. Maybe it’s just me, but in my mind Avril is exceptional!! I’ve read several of her books in the last few weeks and have several more to go! I can’t wait to begin the next one. Avril, thank you so much for giving me such reading pleasure.

A good fun read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The characters were well-fleshed out and the story had enough conflict and depth to keep me reading. It dragged a little in a couple of places and one scene was unnecessary, but this was a good read.

The fate of a woman

Many Historical Romance Writers use their stories to make personal statements about the gender imbalances in history. BORTHIRY has a knack for weaving an engaging story that shows us the reality of her book's social setting without compromising the story. BORTHIRY'S writing also reveals how the power imbalance was accepted within the society and often not questioned by those living it.

The character of Isobel is developed with believable traits for the time. Her experiences at the hands of Felix, and her acceptance of his power over her, shows us how delicate the livelihood of a woman was in those times and how reliant a woman was on the good grace's of a man.

ISOBEL'S reliance on Felix's master, Montgomery, blossoms into a ... well read for yourself. If you loved Jane Eyre, you will enjoy reading this book.

Author has Potential

Knowing that this is Borthiry's first book, it has potential, but did leave me wanting more. While set in Media England, I felt that the dialog didn't always feel like it fit (too modern at times) and the attempts at written accents was a little painful. The characters were alright - Robert and Isobel were not unique, but worked (even if their romance was ridiculously fast in its inception). In actually really enjoyed Elias and wish he had been in more of the book and I see myself wanting to read a book with him as a main character. While I won't rush to read another of her books, I would give her another try to see how she grows as an author.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed it. I love the characters of Isobel and Rob. Their relationship is developed beautifully and their pain is your pain! Love, romance and heartache are beautifully woven together to create this lovely romance. Enjoy!

interesting story

This book was well edited with few typos. The use of English was proper. And interestingly the story took a turn resembling the end of Jane Eyre! Nicely done
