Two enemies.
One prophecy.
A woman between them who could change everything.

Sean Archer has spent his life trapped in a small California town, forbidden to leave without knowing why. David Berkeley is destined for a life of crime, his strange gift of emotional coercion twisted into a weapon. They’ve hated each other for as long as they can remember.

But when a hidden realm drags them both across its borders, Sean learns he is heir to a kingdom on the brink of ruin—and David is bound to the bloodline that once destroyed it.

Caught in the middle is Anna Ainslan, a warrior with her own dangerous secrets. She can help David understand his treacherous magic, can inspire Sean to become the leader Luxoria demands in the face of looming war—but she’s also the only one either of them could ever truly love.

As conflict rises and fate tightens its grip, Sean, David, and Anna must decide if the ties that bind them are chains…or the only hope of saving two worlds. Because in a land where destiny rules, love might be the most dangerous rebellion of all.

The Ties That Bind Us is the first book in a sweeping dark fantasy romance series of enemies and allies, forbidden magic, and love that dares to defy prophecy. Perfect for fans of A Forbidden Alchemy and Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter series!

ARC reader:
This book turns the romantasy genre on its head. The ideas are fresh, the world is new but has some classic fantasy elements, and the characters are well thought out. There are some that you love and some that you love to hate. If you love a good love triangle, or is it a square? This one is for you! The ending leaves your jaw on the floor wishing you had book 2 yesterday.

I really wanted to love this book, but alas it wasn’t quite for me. The story basis, plot, characters, and fresh idea were all there! But, something about this author’s writing style didn’t jive as well for me.
I saw another reviewer say it was like Percy Jackson but for adults and I think that is spot on. For me, the modern vocabulary and nuances didn’t fit with the fantastical world she had built.
There were parts I enjoyed. The love interest developments, complex characters, mysterious history that is still being untangled. I truly believe this author has wonderful ideas.
Just wish more was revealed in this book. Too much was left unknown; making the book feel incomplete and more like an information filler book than a complete story.

I am curious enough to read the next book when it comes out.

4.5⭐️ ARC review

This story was so unique and refreshing! It’s a dark romantasy which takes tropes like the chosen one, fated mates, and love triangles (or love squares?) and comes at them from a completely different angle.

The story tackles themes of agency and imposter syndrome, and the romance is MESSY. There are characters you will love and characters you want to throttle - but they’re all complex and real and you’ll understand WHY they are making certain choices, even if they’re horrible.

Buckle up and prepare for a lot of world building in the first half of the book - there are a lot of names and species and histories to learn and keep straight, so you might want to take some notes. Once it all clicks - the plot takes off quickly and will keep you hooked.

That ending left me unwell and with so many questions and theories! I cannot wait to see where book two takes us

Thank you so much to Deidra Duncan for the gifted ARC!

This dialogue driven story was such a fresh take on the fantasy tropes we all know and love. Why choose, love triangles (circles?) (squares?), found family (found bros?) and portal magic.

The book leans on the darker side of fantasy. Just enough to really hit you in the feels. Our MMC’s pull and tempt you in completely different ways. And dare I say I may have fallen for a blonde?

You have secrets and a vague prophecy that keeps you guessing whose role is whose. Our FMC is immediately likable and you are also completely intrigued by her.

This is book 1 in the Bonds of Fate series so there is a bit of world and history being built. The last 30% will have you sat and absolutely needing book 2 ASAP.

This book has a strong foundation and good bones with a solid plot. However, this unfortunately, was a DNF for me. I had a lot of trouble with the 3rd person tense in this book. I’m not really sure exactly if it’s the execution or just mood. I don’t take DNF’s lightly and they’re rare for me. This review is solely to tell you to give the book and author a try. Just because it wasn’t for me at this time, doesn’t mean it isn’t for you or for future me. Thank you for the opportunity to read this one.

This book gave so many nostalgic vibes. It was a good mix of modern fantasy mixed with fantasy. There were great characters and an interesting storyline.

I did feel a little lost in the sauce sometimes but overall it ended on a note that had me wanting more. I love Deidra’s writing and can’t wait to read more of her books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️The Ties that Bind Us by Deidra Duncan

This book was like nothing I’ve read before. It gave me adult Percy Jackson vibes, in the best way. I was sooo emotionally attached to the characters it’s unreal. I am very partial to David though… he’s mine, you can’t have him!

I absolutely adore Deidra’s writing, and love how different this is from her other works. The dry wit she throws in, really does it for me.

The world is well described, the character each unique, and crucial to the story. I am sitting over here desperately begging for book two asap. If you like multiple POVs, fated mates (maybe), forced proximity, grumpy/ sunshine, who did this to you, enemies to lovers (Maybe) and dark prophecies, this is for you!

Be ready for a wild ride.

4.25/5 stars and 1.5/5 spice rating. Wow what a unique romantasy! I can't believe how these complex characters drew me in and yanked my heart around like that. Man! It was just one thing after the other. I give this book tons of points for originality, it mixed both human worlds and fae worlds while immersing you in unique magic systems, super challenging character relationships, mystery, and heartache. All the feels for this one! I did feel quite confused at the beginning, you are throw into quite a lot of information, world building, and characters, that feels a bit overwhelming at times. But stick with in because as you begin to unravel the world and get to know these characters, you will absolutely be locked in and committed by the middle of this story.

This book features two main MMCs, David and Sean as well as two main FMCs, Isobel (Bel) and Anna. There's a little of everything going on with these characters, soulmates, soul bonding, prophesy, unique magical types, various magical creatures, drama, love, heartbreak, and this is just book ONE. I would not say that these four give you a love triangle, not really, at least not in the traditional sense. This is much more like a Venn diagram with a bunch of overlap!

This story starts out with Sean and David, lifelong rivals, and mostly ordinary humans. Until one encounter thrusts them into the fae world, where they learn of prophecies that foretell their roll in an upcoming magical war to save the weakening magic of the realm from the Indigo. David and Sean also learn that they are heirs to magical bloodlines, naming Sean next in line for power. David and Sean meet a whole cast of characters who help them realize their magic, learn about their history, and even meet their fae family they didn't know existed. This book is full of adventure, found family, bonds (both magical and emotional), and rich character development.

You need to read this one if you are looking to be emotionally devastated, while having a love hate relationships with most of the characters at one point or another (lol). I also was obsessed with Morgan's magic, the ability to coerce someone to act outside of their own will can be so powerful and often feared, I thought it was such an interesting power for our characters to wield. I am so excited read book two in The Bonds of Fate series.

Favorite quotes:
"I think you'd give me anything I want. I could take every dark thought that's ever run through your head. I could force you to spill all your secrets. I could make you drop down and **** me in front of all these people."

"Incarceration with a woman he didn't trust. Restrained by a love he'd never wanted. Captive to a life already laid out for him."

Thank you so much to Deidra Duncan and Iris Influencer Society for this e-ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

First of all I would like to thank the author for gifting me this ARC.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.25/5)

The Ties That Bind Us is an engaging start to what promises to be an epic fantasy romance series. It blends magic, prophecy, reincarnation, political intrigue, and romance into a story that kept me invested from beginning to end.

Sean Archer has spent his entire life trapped in a small California town, never understanding why he can never leave. When he’s suddenly pulled into the magical realm of Luxoria, he discovers he’s the heir to a kingdom on the brink of collapse and destined to save it. Unsurprisingly, Sean struggles with the weight of that responsibility, especially as fragments of his past life begin resurfacing. Those memories complicate everything, particularly his growing connection to Isabel, who is magically blood-bound to protect—and love—him.

David Berkeley was one of my favourite characters. He’s spent his life hating Sean without ever truly understanding why, and once he arrives in Luxoria, everyone assumes he’s destined to become the villain because of who he once was. However, the story quickly reveals there’s far more to David than prophecy suggests. Watching him question his fate and learn to control his unique emotional coercion magic made for one of the book’s strongest character arcs.

Anna, the fierce pixie warrior, brings another compelling perspective. She becomes David’s mentor, helping him understand his dangerous abilities while refusing to judge him based on his past. She also carries a mystery surrounding her own parentage that gradually unfolds and has major implications for the larger conflict. The connection between Sean, David, and Anna forms the emotional heart of the story, with fate constantly pulling them together even as prophecy threatens to tear them apart.

The world-building is one of the novel’s biggest strengths. Luxoria feels rich with history, magical lore, and political tensions, and while there’s a lot to absorb early on, the payoff is worth it as the pieces begin falling into place. There are plenty of twists, shifting alliances, and revelations that kept me eager to see where the story was heading.

Overall, The Ties That Bind Us delivers an entertaining mix of fantasy, romance, destiny, and found family with memorable characters and an intriguing magical world. If you enjoy portal fantasy, enemies-to-allies dynamics, reincarnation themes, morally complex characters, and stories where fate is constantly challenged by choice, this is definitely worth picking up. I’ll certainly be continuing the series to see where these characters’ journeys lead next.

ARC Review

Excellent, highly recommend, absolutely would read again, moved-touched.

The motions this book put me through. Heart wrenching. Aggravating. Funny. Loved the development of the characters and getting to know them and see their different stories. First of all, I agree with David - that “b*tch”. Smh. I literally had to stop reading multiple times because of how badly she was irking my soul. Secondly, the complexities of David were so realistic and raw they really draw you in. He is the best character imo loved that we got to really delve into his background to kind of understand him better. Third, Sean I don’t really have much to say except - how did you not expect that to happen or her to be on some bs?…….. were you really that tempted you couldn’t listen to your instincts or the voice in your head instead of the head in your pants?. 4. I wish there was more of the interaction between Kywyn and Sean so THAT scene would’ve hit harder. 5. That B*tch. I really can’t get over her audacity. 6. Anna, girl, really?. With all the back and forth you got from David how couldn’t you connect certain things??? I mean I get it okay, you’re emotional. You can’t help it. But girl you aren’t stupid, why’d you go and do that at the end????? 7. Wish I saw more of Autumn and Cole’s relationship hoping they have more scenes in next book. 8. That B*tch smfh. 9. David I get you being salty about your mom but come on……… she could’ve helped with certain things. Also why didn’t you just open up and say SOMETHINGGGGGG. Ifykyk. Multiple times you could’ve. Really what happened is on you because it’s better to be honest and let others make their own decisions than lie or hide and make the decision for them. Really messing up the vibe here dude okayyyyy.

I got the ebook ARC. When the book drops or the second one is about to I will invest in the physical copy (worried the covers won’t be the same and we can’t have that). A book worth reading. A book worth sharing. A fantastic read. I am so great dip to have had the opportunity to read this before the physical copy came out and I am invested in this world and these characters and need the next book ASAP. Thank you for this experience.

I lied, I preordered the book. No regrets!!!!

Solid start to this new dark fantasy romance series and I can’t wait to read more.

Tropes:
Found Family
Enemies to Brothers
Soul Binding (but not what you expect)
Unwanted Fated Mate
Reluctant heroes.

I was lucky to be given an eARC of this book by the author- thanks Deidra. I really enjoyed her dystopian book “Until I Die” so I was very excited and intrigued about her first dark fantasy romance.

The story has multiple POVs, an intriguing magic system, solid world and lore building and will take all the typical book tropes and flip them on their heads! I honestly didn’t know where Deidra was taking us at times and it was so refreshing.

In short we have two MMCs and one FMC who were brought up in the mortal realm. Both the male leads have grown up hating each other and have had their own trials and traumas before their worlds are upended and they are led to the immortal realm. There they are told they are the ancestors of powerful fae who led the charge against their nemesis the Indigos who are literally emotional vampires- they feed off of the feelings of humans. They start to share their ancestors memories as the story progresses which of course shows us that there are discrepancies in what they have been led to believe.

This book has made a good start of immersing us in this new world. It has different types of fae who charge their magic in ways unique to them, an intriguing history which we are drip fed throughout the story and some unique main characters.

The only issue I had was I found the first 30% quite slow to get in to but I think that was purely because there was a lot to be introduced. I’m so glad I stuck with it though because the last 30% was so good and the ending had me raging because I want more. It’s difficult to compare it to other books because it is so crazy- but in a good way. Nothing is what you expect and in this big world of fantasy stories where it starts to feel a bit cut and paste it was a fun ride. I’m told it’s part of a four book series and I will definitely be sticking around for more.

This book (The Ties That Bind Us) effectively defies the standard romantasy blueprint, opting for a narrative that prioritizes deliberate world-building and complex character evolution over relying on tired genre tropes.
By rooting the narrative in the familiar tension of the mortal world before unveiling the protagonists' true origins within the fae realm, the author successfully establishes a compelling contrast between the characters' hidden sovereign bloodlines and their isolated mortal upbringings.

The development of the two main male characters, Sean and David, serves as the heart of the novel. Their individual journeys toward self-discovery—navigating new realities, complicated family dynamics, and their respective placements in the fae realm—are deeply engaging.

I particularly appreciated the execution of the enemies-to-brothers dynamic, which feels authentic and offers significant potential for growth.

Furthermore, watching the narrative carefully dismantle the villainous facade of one lead to reveal his deeper layers proved to be one of the most rewarding aspects of the story.

The romance is a true slow burn, characterized by sharp banter, emotional depth, and heavy yearning rather than an immediate genre high. It successfully integrates these intimate moments with a well-paced magic system that feels both intuitive and expansive.

While the transition between worlds could have been slightly smoother, the contrast ultimately provides a unique perspective that sets the stage for a larger, more intricate conflict.

The ending, particularly the heart-wrenching final scene, leaves me fully invested in the future of the series.

Deidra’s writing is evocative and descriptive throughout, making this a promising start for those who appreciate high-angst relationships, complex love squares, and characters who are as flawed as they are likable.

It is a refreshing, thoughtful entry into the genre that rewards the reader's patience with its layered setup and genuine emotional stakes.

The Ties That Bind Us starts out in the human world with Sean and David where they have been raised for their own safety, they are rivals who completely despise each other. They both feel their lives are not quite complete and there is something missing. In their own ways, they are pulled into the magic world where they learn they are heirs to magical bloodlines and there is an ancient prophecy foretold of a war where they have a role to save the weakening magic from the Indigo.

The first half of the book is an information overload, and it took me a long time to get through it. I had to take a break to wrap my head around it all. Once I got through the onslaught of it, the plot really got moving.

It is full of its own unique magic system, complex character relationships, flashbacks, twists, turns and betrayals all beautifully crafted. There is emotional devastation you don't see coming that will break your heart. Watching the bond grow between Sean and David is refreshing as they begin to unravel the layers behind each of them, discover what they keep hidden from the world and how they work together to begin to save it.

I cannot wait for book 2 after that cliffhanger, knowing this a four-book series and the tears it left me shedding.

"You sucked, but you kept doing it until you succeeded. It's what you've always done. This is no different."

"No Sean. It's not different. Being this person they want is a skill you can learn."

"It doesn't matter what they expect. It only matters how you react."

"The Dijante has his place. Light always comes with shadow. Once cannot exist without the other."

"Kind of feels like I'm shackled to someone who won't shut up but only speaks in limericks."

ADVANCED READER COPY REVIEW!

This is not your typical romantasy book. This is set partially in the mortal world and then in a magical world. The two together was so different than any other fantasy book I’ve ever read. It was honestly so refreshing. Some times it feels like with fantasy you are reading the same type of story just by a different author this was not that at all.

Our two main male characters are both in powerful bloodlines where they are the sovereigns but they were taken away by their mothers into the mortal realm to be raised as normal kids to help protect them. Sean was taken to the mortal realm with his mother and his “aunt” who also had a son. David was also brought into the mortal realm with these other mothers and children but was put with a different family and his mother left him. David and Sean grew up feeling different than other kids. Sean struggled feeling like he didn’t know who he actually was. David knew he was different just didn’t know exactly why.

They both eventually end up in the fae realm and everything changes for the both of them. Learning who they are, how to handle the changes, new relationships with parents and romantic partners, and how to fit in. Sean and David are different due to how they were raised.

As we went on I started to love David just because of his personality and he didn’t hide who he was. Sean on the other hand, I started to not be able to stand. He constantly refused everything and wouldn’t accept his situation after he desperately wanted answers. He quickly became romantically involved with someone and it just didn’t seem like the best match/ideal thing for someone who still doesn’t accept who or what they are.

The last maybe 30% of this was incredible and added so many different things to the story. I honestly did not expect what came next. That cliff hanger was cruel and I don’t want to wait for the next one I need the answers asap 🫠

Thank you Deidra for the ARC!

A complicated love square full of feelings and a bond that will slowly bring two of the souls together, this exiting fantasy adventure had me hooked right in.

You follow two MMCs who both were raised in the human world for their own safety, one by a loving mother and the other was placed in the hands of a cruel fake father. When they both return to the magical lands they were from, Sean who’s mother raised him turns out to be the foretold savior of their land and descendant of the one who previously tried to save their realm from his evil brother who the other MMC David is descended from. They must train in this new world and learn to better use their own strengths and powers while surrounded by immense pressure and a women who is also a reincarnation of the previous trio, who already hates David and is in love with Sean. Of course there’s another FMC Anna who also mysteriously came from the human realm and has similar powers to David that draws them together even if her might be dangerous.

I enjoyed all that was hanging in the balance for this group of friends and found family and how many twists and turns that kept the plot exciting and devastating at the same time. The complicated relationship between the 4 main players was fun to watch evolve and I can’t wait to see how it works itself out in the next books, especially as David and Sean slowly become more alike due to their bond. It was also interesting how the original tales of their previous lives was gotten so wrong and getting to see through flashbacks the truth and how the characters then reacted to that was a cool twist. With a bit of a reveal/cliffhanger at the end there with what I suspect will have a big impact next book, I cannot wait to see where the author takes this plot line next! My rating 4.6/5!

The Ties that Binds Us by Deidre Duncan
So many secrets! Sean feels trapped in the small town his mother raised him in. It was all to keep him safe. From what? She is longer around to answer all the questions he has. His Aunt Blaire isn’t helping. She just references The Mother’s will. Not at all helpful.
David doesn’t want his father to reference him as his Prince of Death. He feels like all he does is destroy.
Each man knows of the other and the hatred between them is real. And strong.
One day, Sean has reached his limit. With his cousin, Cole, in tow, they head out of town for the first time. They end up in Vegas. They take advantage of their situation. They end up drinking and at a club. Then everything goes wrong. Sean notices people with strange purple eyes and violence ensues. They are rescued by two women and taken through a strange mist.
David can’t take violence of his daily life anymore. He suddenly feels a painful pull in his chest. The pull leads him into the mist.
Now Sean and David, enemies, are in the same place at the same time. Sean the “Savior.” David the “Shadow.” Both men find that they are descendants of powerful people. And they now realize that they share memories with their ancestors.
And now there is a woman that has affected them both. But she doesn’t know where she came from or from who. How does she change things? She loves David, but will that change? Once David and Sean become closer, will she change them and how?
Will these memories be real? Is Sean the Savior? Is it what he wants? Is David as evil as everyone thinks?
The secrets that continue to come to light will change the course of both their lives. Even at the end, we are wondering what course each will take and how each man is becoming more powerful and like the other. Makes me anxious for the story to continue.

That Ties That Bind Us takes several familiar romantasy tropes and turns them on their head in ways I wasn't expecting.

The fact that the two main characters are male is, in itself, fairly unique within the romantasy genre. Duncan also flips the typical character dynamics, giving us a dark, brooding blond MMC alongside a dark-haired golden retriever love interest. I've also never seen a protagonist fight the restrictions of a fated mate bond so vehemently before, and that resistance made the romance feel much more interesting than the trope usually does, especially when the mated pair are obviously not right for one another.

The concept of heirs inheriting both the memories and powers of their ancestors was one of the book's strongest and most unique ideas, but it was also the aspect that confused me the most. Were they simply descendants? If so, how were they able to experience the memories of those who came before them? The story repeatedly stresses that they are not reincarnations, yet I never felt like I fully understood how the magic system worked. I also did not understand how their could be 4 rulers of the same kingdom/same people.  Where did Sean's jurisdiction start and end, as opposed to Bel's, David's and Autumn's.

David was by far my favorite character. His tragic backstory and emotional complexity made him incredibly compelling, while Sean never quite captured my attention in the same way.

My biggest issue, however, was the ending. I understand this is the first book in a planned trilogy, but I still expected some sense of resolution by the final page. Instead, it felt less like the conclusion of a first installment and more like the story simply stopped in the middle of a chapter.

Even with those criticisms, there are enough unanswered questions, intriguing mythology, and fresh takes on familiar romantasy tropes that I'm genuinely interested in continuing the series. While it wasn't a perfect start, it laid enough groundwork to make me curious about what comes next.

I received an advanced copy of this book, and this review reflects my honest opinion:

I’ve been in a reading slump lately, and The Tides That Bind Us pulled me out of it. The world building was intriguing without feeling overwhelming or overly detailed. I especially enjoyed how the story began in the mortal world before transitioning to the immortal one. While I think the shift between the two worlds could have been a bit smoother, I still appreciated the contrast and the unique perspective it brought to the story.

One of my favorite aspects of fantasy romance is a strong supporting cast, and this book delivered. Beyond the main characters, there are several compelling and likable side characters who add depth to the story. There’s also the potential for a love triangle—or maybe even a love square—which I’m excited to see develop in future books.

I particularly enjoyed the development of the two main male characters. One initially comes across as a villain, but as the story unfolds, layers of his character are revealed that make you question your first impressions. Watching that evolution was one of the most engaging parts of the book. At the same time, the other male lead is equally compelling for entirely different reasons. Both characters are flawed, complex, and ultimately easy to root for, which makes the romantic tension and relationships feel even more meaningful.

The witty banter, emotional depth, and tastefully written spice created a great balance throughout the novel. The pacing was strong, the magic system was engaging, and the overall plot felt fresh while still delivering the elements I love in the genre. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the rest of this series goes.

Thank you, Diedra Duncan, for the opportunity to read and review this fantastic eARC. This one is different from the usual Romantacy/Fantasy reads. It gives readers all the popular tropes, with a twist. A GOOD twist.

This book is a much-needed breath of fresh air for the often recycled Romantacy plots. I loved questioning the validity of fated mates and prophecies and portraying them in a negative light. 'Monsters aren't born, they're made' (from the film Send Help) applies here, and is done well. The characters are complex and likable. Ulterior motives are at play, adding to the suspense of questioning whom to trust and predicting who will betray whom as the series progresses.

My only complaint was the slow beginning and the slight awkward shift between worlds. The descriptions are fine, but I would have appreciated a better dialectal distinction. It's possible the author intended to show how similar the worlds are, given how easy it was to travel between them, but I struggled with it. The prologue and time spent in the 'mortal realm' at the beginning are where it struggled to hook me. There were also moments when the pacing (especially the dialogue) was a little slower than I liked, a stark contrast to Duncan's dystopian dark romance Until I Die, where the pace never seemed to stop. Regardless, the story and characters kept me interested as it built towards that ending.

I look forward to its July release and will smash that preorder button the minute it's available. And if we're declaring teams, I'm team triad.

ARC Review- Thank you Deidra Duncan and IRIS Influencer Society for the opportunity to read this story!

There was something about The Ties That Bind Us that felt so refreshing. It gave me major Shadowhunters vibes with its blend of supernatural beings, intertwined destinies, and the feeling that everyone is connected in ways you don’t fully understand until the story unfolds.

The beginning took me a little while to settle into. There are a lot of characters, different magical beings, and both present-day and historical storylines to keep track of, so I found myself taking my time as I learned how everything fit together. Once the pieces started clicking into place, though, I was completely invested.

What I appreciated most was how character-driven this story is. Rather than focusing on nonstop action, it spends time exploring the characters and their relationships. Watching those connections unfold was one of my favorite parts of the book, and I loved discovering how everyone was tied together.

The second half was where the story really took off for me. I ended up reading from 62% all the way to the end in a single day because I needed to know what would happen next. While this book answers some questions, it also leaves plenty of mysteries to explore, and it definitely feels like the first chapter of a much larger story.

Overall, I had a great time with this one. It’s unique, intriguing, and left me excited to continue the series. If you enjoy character-driven fantasy with interconnected storylines, supernatural beings, and an unfolding mystery that keeps you guessing, I think this one is worth checking out.

Thank you to Deidra Duncan for an ARC of this book for review. Thoughts and opinions are my own.
The premise of this is interesting, but the execution kind of fell flat, IMO. Not quite sure what it was, but the book was very slow in the beginning; the author trying to introduce you to everything all at once really bogged things down. Things picked up towards the end, but there was a lot to get through to get to that point first. I'll admit to skimming a bit because it was a lot and I couldn't tell if I was just uninterested, if it's the author's writing style, or what.

As Sean, and even David, started getting more involved/realizing things, the info-dump slowed down but then it felt like it was a little bit there as needed. I did like the past memories/lives aspect as things went on. The whole soulbond/mate thing is intriguing but also I kind of feel like Isobel can't be trusted?

The end is kind of a cliffhanger but not, but it also tears at your emotions! Holy hell does David get put through the ringer! Really hoping that whatever comes, he's able to find his way out of this because Anna really is for him, no matter what either of them seems to think/what magic is at play. And the epilogue makes it seem like others know this but maybe there's something in the way.

Overall, this book is intriguing. It's a little heavy/dense at the beginning as the author attempts to throw a lot at you all at once, but it's not a bad book. And I'm definitely interested to see how stuff falls out between Sean/David/Anna and the soulmate thing. Plus the epilogue.

This was more of a 3.25. I was so excited to read this and maybe my expectations were a bit too high. I don’t think I got along with the authors writing especially in the beginning, it was a bit difficult to get through, but then it definitely got better. There was a lot of telling at first and not showing, and also the way it was written was almost a bit too juvenile for me. I do think this writer has amazing ideas and loved the premise of this book. There are many things I did still enjoy about this, especially the unique premise of ancestors thoughts and feelings being reborn into our current characters. I also loved the flashbacks that we got to the characters from the past however, once certain plot points were established the story became a bit convoluted. My favorite character was definitely David, and he had a lot of complexity to him. However, while I understand where his love story went, I don’t quite understand why it had to happen the way it did and I feel like it was simply a plot point to push us in a certain direction, and it didn’t really make sense the way it was done. There was also a lot of repetition in some of the characters actions and I feel like large parts could’ve been taken out and the story would’ve progressed much better. I will be continuing on to book 2 as I do want to see what happens with the characters and how things get resolved, especially after the ending. Hopefully the writing will continue to progress and we will get more in-depth explanations for all the components in the story.

I’ll admit, the book felt a bit slow in the beginning (still drew me in, don't get it twisted!). I think it was because it was just starting and setting up for what would come next. It becomes even more interesting once Sean leaves with Cole to Las Vegas. The enemies-to-brothers concept was done well, and I can sense it had more room to grow in the next book. As the first book of this series, it definitely sets up the plot, settings, and character dynamics. I loved the romance that blossomed between David and Anna, and my heart was wrenching in the last scene where he was telling her not to love him (Thanks for ripping my heart out Deidra😭).

This book is very well written and very descriptive. I think, if you were to come into this book hoping to get the romantasy love high we all get with most romantasy, you’d honestly be mistaken. Like how its promoted, this book is the first in the series, so the build up and slow burn will continue on and be more developed later down the line. One things for certain though, the epilogue will keep you wanting more and it gave me the vibes of the after-credit scenes that come with marvel movies “David/ Sean/ Anna will return on Avengers: Doomsday”. I am excited to read the second one when it comes out as I can only hope that Deidra’s skills become even more better at storytelling as it already is *chef’s kiss*

4/5 Recommending for enemies-to-brothers, slow burn, yearning, angst, touch her you💀, and love triangle/ circle lovers (especially if you’re a masochist and you love getting your heart pulled out of your chest 😭😭).

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ - not *that* spicy just 2.5 explicit scenes and explicit words to describe said scenes are mild. Still good descriptive scenes tho!

This book got me out of my Romantasy slump in the best way possible! When the author says that she turns all the tropes upside down, she means it. I found myself constantly yelling at the book in shock at what was happening (no spoilers!). A truly refreshing and unique take on a fantasy world.

The way every character and twist and turn is thought out is so masterful. I found myself waivering between who was good and who wasn’t through out the entire book (and I don’t know that I ever actually landed). The moral dilemmas that the MMCs find themselves in tugged at my brain and heart, two sides of the story told from each perspective. The back and forth between our reality and the fae world is well done. You get a good sense for what it is like to be brought up an outsider and be thrown into a world so different from what you knew to be true. I really loved the mechanics of magic used and can not express how well everything is planned and explained. Whenever I had a thought or question, it was answered in the book.

Not to say that this book wraps up neatly, in fact my only complaint is that since I had an ARC copy I now have to wait even longer for the next book! It’s all good, I look forward to a reread where I’m sure I’ll find more Easter eggs and will appreciate the storyline even more than the first read through.

Thank you to the author for this gifted eARC, all thoughts are my own.

Received an eARC from the author

Multi POV, starting with two MMC POVs instead of the usual FMC then MMC. Finally. Refreshing change and I'm so into it.

David and Sean hate each other from birth. Not the fun fake-enemies thing, actual hatred. So watching that turn into something else once they get to the magical realm? Really good. Not enemies to lovers so much as enemies to ??? And of course they both end up drawn to the same woman, because why not. Honestly that love/hate push-pull is happening with almost every character in this book, and it's what makes the whole thing feel different from everything else out there.

The world itself is genuinely unique too, not another copy of a copy.

My issues: Some stuff barely gets explained, other stuff gets way too much attention. David randomly loves books once he's in the magical realm and there was zero setup for that earlier, so it felt off. Also multiple FMCs, and for a while I had no idea where this was going or with who.

Then Anna showed up and made up for all of it. She feels everything, all the time, full volume, and my empathic heart could not handle what she went through.

Second half fixed pretty much everything I was confused about early on. Finished the book fully invested in David, Sean, and Anna.

Worth it if you want something different from most romantasy right now. 🗡️📚

This book had a bit of a pacing issue; the beginning started fairly slowly. The world-building itself was lacking for me; there was a heavier focus on character development. The plot felt like it wasn't integrated at an earlier stage. When there were spots of plot or building, it was more of an info dump style than a natural progression.

By the halfway point of the book, I understood what the author was trying to say, and it was a good idea; there was still room for more world-building here for me. Getting more background information could've helped further the understanding.

Near the end is where that jumbled feeling really hit a peak, and I had to push myself. There was some confusion over who was who and what was what, but it did start to fall into place; the ending of the novel was redeeming.

Everything was tied up, and it made sense. I do believe that this was an interesting concept, and by the end of the book was fairly Enjoyable, but the heart of the story was hard to grasp. It felt like trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle, but a few pieces were missing, deliberately held away, which confused you about what the picture was supposed to be.

It felt like this was a sequel, as it felt like there were things I should have already known to help the story's overall flow.

The Ties That Bind Us is a dark portal fantasy romance and I really loved the premise of the story:

• Two heirs hidden in the mortal realm from birth
• Previous heirs memories passed down to descendants
• Lifelong enemies in a love triangle
• A realm on the brink of collapse

Unfortunately, this book wasn’t for me − or at least not at the moment. I started debating whether to finish it around the 15% mark and finally decided to leave it at 25% (roughly 140 pages in). Please trust that I did not take that decision lightly; I can still count on my fingers the number of novels I haven’t finished in the last five years.

I found the introduction of multiple interconnected characters close together too complicated for my current reading mood. I was losing track of who was who and what their motivations were but I do appreciate that the main characters are also overwhelmed. Ultimately, my decision not to continue reading came from a writing style that I struggled to get immersed in.

I think this book would be better suited to a reader who enjoys complicated family relationships and histories told through dialogue up front, with the main plot following after the background has been established.

I just finished The Ties That Bind Us and it did not disappoint. I applied for this ARC on a whim because I definitely judge books by their covers and this one was gorgeous. 😍The colors alone caught my eye before even reading the synopsis. 💜

Luckily for me Deidra Duncan allowed me on her ARC team!

This story follows a handful of main characters, each with their own unique personalities and quirks. As you read the story, my feelings for each character changed. The ones I disliked at the start ended up being my favorites in the end.
I felt that the beginning of the story felt a little on the slow side- Kind of reminded me of how ACOTAR starts off slow but then sucks you into the story about halfway through and you end up addicted.

You get to know a little bit of the backstory for both Sean and David which helps better understand them later on in the story so the slow start is totally worth it.

Sean and David get transported to another realm where they are caught in the middle of their own feud as well as the war between two realms. This book has lots of drama, plot twists, and excitement.

Once I got to about 70%, I could not put it down! The plot moves quickly and has lots of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. I reached the end and immediately wanted Book 2!

🌌This was slow to start, but I also could not put this down..

Being the first book in a series, I knew going in I was going to be left without answers as we wait.. and here I am... I want Book 2, and 3 and 4..

✨ I do love the banter that happens with each of the characters, and have quickly fallen for our main FMC Anna. She has a twist of fate going on, and I wasn't quite expecting it at all.

✨ I wanted to get to know David the most, he is intriguing in the most annoying ways, where you just want to walk away but can't.

✨ There's Sean, I like him? I think? Think of spoiled but also not. Haha he is intriguing in a way that makes you want to go wake up bro!

✨ I sooo want more Autumn, she makes me giggle. I hope we get to know her more as the story goes on, and I want to see what comes of Cole.

✨ And last but not least, Isobel. She's the one I first was like ok, I can like her, then quickly just can't. I feel for her, to an extent.

🌶️ The spice is roughly a 1.5 because it's there when it's there. On an off page.

Thank you, this has been an advanced reader review.

First, thank you to Deidra Duncan for letting me join her ARC team! Then, I want to start off with that gorgeous cover. The colors of the cosmos is what helped draw me in to want to be an ARC for this author. The blue, purple and black are all of my favorite colors.

This is a romantasy story with multiple POV's so the reader knows a little of what the main characters are thinking. I found that I had a little trouble remembering which ancestor went to which character. I have several auto immune illnesses that include brain fog as a symptom, so I believe that is why I had difficulty. The characters are very likable and are different from one another. To be honest, I developed a bit of a crush on the David character as I found him hilarious.

The first half of the book was a little slow for me but that was because the author was building the characters and their world, beyond the "mist." But not long after that comes a major twist and holds your attention!

Finishing the last couple sentences of the book my first thought was, 'When does the sequel come out?!?' I am so excited for the sequel! Before reading this, I have never read any of the author's work and it definitely won't be the last.
