When I am not writing, I toss tennis balls to my cadre of dogs. My house is filled with books and dogs, you can smell both when you walk in the front door. It's a good smell.

I have 36 published novels and am currently writing in the mystery genre. My latest mystery, The Dead of Winter, was a finalist for the Claymore Award and is the first in the Piper Blackwell series.

I live in a tiny town in the middle of Illinois that has a Dollar General, a pizza place with exceedingly slow service, a veterinarian (good thing, eh?), and train tracks...lots of train tracks.

I am glad I read this book on kindle. I can not imagine how huge the trade paperback must have been. There were so many good stories. This book was almost a teaser for authors I now need to hunt down and find more of their stories.

I actually finished this book a long time ago. It has taken me this long to write the review not because of the quality of the work included, which is astounding, but because of the nature and scope of the project. Dance Like A Monkey was a fundraising effort to help the late CJ Henderson cope with his climbing medical costs as he battled cancer.

CJ eventually lost that battle, but he lived to see this book. When I tell you he was both touched and humbled by the love and care it represents, there is no hyperbole involved.

The most notable thing about this title is not the names of the authors inside or the sheer size of the book itself, but the spirit of the work. The framework for this project came together over one short weekend. A call went out for help and everyone in the book and more readily answered that call. They received nothing for their work, and some might expect that what they offered up might reflect that. Those who would expect that would be wrong.

The level of skill and talent encompassed by Dance Like a Monkey represents the best offerings of the speculative community. Rich, entrancing stories that run the scope and breadth of what speculation has to offer. There is not one story in these pages that I did not thoroughly enjoy for its content, and appreciate for the spirit in which it came to be. And I say to you…dance, Monkey, dance! And know that it even now puts a smile on an old curmudgeon’s face somewhere in the afterlife.
