Really easy reading about friends to lovers and second chances, as this was basically all about Sean and Jared finally getting their ducks in a row, airing out past misunderstandings and thus, moving on together.

This should’ve been a slam dunk but there were several things that just didn’t sit well with me - things like super fast progression, awkward dirty talk, and a crazy ex-girlfriend that was well…. crazy. Toss in shoddy editing that didn’t catch misspelled words, wrong words, and rough sentence structure, all of which just left for a disjointed read.

I wanted to love this hard. Points for little relationship angst once these two decide on truthful full disclosure. I loved the small town vibe and most of the side characters as well. Overall, a great happy ending showcasing just how well Sean and Jared were made for each other - it just took them 11 years to figure it out. Oy.

I squirreled...

True facts. I was looking for another book that I thought was on my e-reader and this one caught my eye. Couldn't find the other book because as I discovered I hadn't actually put it on my e-reader. So I've remedied that problem but in the meantime this was a fairly short read at about 130 pages so I carried on.

'Always Been You' ended up being a good read as opposed to the awesomeness that I had been hoping for. The premise was sweet two guys in love with each other one gay and of course one straight or so our gay guy thinks. High school graduation should have been the beginning for Seth and Jared but instead it turned out to be the end...ok, a really long pause, like 11 years long. Until fate brings Seth back to their home town allowing Jared his second chance. Jared is determined to clear up whatever the misunderstanding was that caused Seth to run from him all those years ago. This sounded like it had the potential to have a lot of angst and I would have been ok with that if it had, but in the end I was spared the angst and I liked that. I was ok with the fact that there was a breakdown in communication between our two MCs which ended up being a big contributor to their problem but to continue that 11 years later when these men have both matured and have each become successful in their own right would have seemed a bit much. So, I was glad that the author didn't choose that route to continue their story. Instead we got to see a sweet reunion between these two as they got to know each other again and realize that their feelings were still as strong as ever and just to keep things interesting the impact of the outside influences that caused the original separation played out as part of the current story adding a bit of tension and drama as well as providing further detail to past events.

What took this from being at least a 4 star read for me was the sex. Sorry guys, I just wasn't feeling the love. I found my mind wandering here, there and everywhere. I made a couple of to do list and honestly had a little trouble keeping track of who was doing what to whom on occasion. It just wasn't working.

For example, I want a show of hands here and be honest with me and yourselves... you're at your parents' home. They're downstairs along with your two very young impressionable children and you are all there because you've had a very disturbing encounter with someone who has not only threatened your well being but that of your children. Are you really and truly going to be up for a round of mind blowing, scream your partners name out loud sex in your childhood bedroom knowing who your audience is? If yes than all I can say is your inhibitions are way less than mine because knowing my parents would hear me is enough to douse that fire. Add in two small children and it's game over because we all know children have no filters when it comes to the questions they ask...so really? Do you want to have to navigate that minefield? Sorry, I pretty much lost it on that one between picturing the look on my parents faces and imagining the types of questions kids can ask...I wasn't sure whether it would be appropriate to laugh or cry.

At the end of it all this was an ok story and before I forget while neither of these things factored into my rating they do warrant being mentioned:

As near as I can tell the cover that appears at the top of my review isn't the original cover and if that is correct as far as I'm concerned changing it was a good idea. Because rather than looking like a picture of two men who are supposedly the same age the cover below looks like a picture of a man who could possibly be in his late 20s and a much younger man who appears to still be in his teen years. In general I like the revised cover (at the top of this review) much better.

description

Last of all the editing could have been a bit better I'm pretty sure that was part of the problem in at least one of those sex scenes. They were just too convoluted or maybe just went on too long. More importantly and yes I have to admit this one still irritates me. I am sitting 'here' at my desk typing this review, however, if I want to listen to what you are saying I need to 'hear' with my 'ears (h-ear). This is basic grammar you're, your, they're, their, there, hear, here, wear, where, ware, I, eye, see, sea, bare, bear, and the list goes on but still it's basic. If you want to write a book and have me spend my money on it at least know these things use them appropriately, edit for them and if you can't afford a professional editor ask a friend with strong English skills don't ass-u-me you'll spot your own mistakes (chances are if you made the mistake you're not going to realize it's a mistake) and if you don't or aren't sure...well, google is your friend. Please use it.

Ok that's it class dismissed.

I wavered between a 2 and a 3 rating for this. While I like second chance stories and “the one who got away”, this didn’t feel quite like that because Jared’s explanations and actions didn’t make enough sense to me. While in high school Seth was bullied and had only one real friend, Jared. When an incident at a party shows him exactly what he doesn’t have, he leaves for college and is away for eleven years (and I questioned, did he never visit his much-loved parents during that time?) The eleven years have passed with Seth in a different place, until the friends who had children with Seth’s donated sperm are killed (and Seth is lucky to be alive) and Seth has custody. Back to his hometown he goes, opening a bakery and where he can utilize the support of his parents. Although it appears it’s been two years since the shooting and now, so it seemed like he should be doing better by now.

Of course, one of the first people he runs into is Jared and that meeting doesn’t go the way he thought it would. As they begin to reconnect, Seth has the feeling that Jared is keeping things from him. And he is, as well as the rest of Seth’s family. That part caused me to stop and say, “WHAT?” Had the shooting occurred a few months ago, I’d have said okay, that’s why, but it’s been two years. Seth already comes across as pretty fragile and they treat him like he’s a child. At one point his mom says, “Just trust me when I say that not everything was as it seemed all those years ago,” and my thought was, mom, how do you know? Because Jared told you so? The parents and Seth both automatically believe a lot from a man who hid things from him and who hasn’t been seen in eleven years.

Jared’s choice of girlfriend also got me. If he never realized how much Becky and her brother bullied and hated Seth, then he wasn’t much of a friend then. To come back and date the one person guaranteed to hurt Seth didn’t sound like someone who was pining at all, let alone cared. The story Jared gives of that night at the party didn’t click for me, sounded more like a man rewriting history.

I have read other books by this author that I liked very much but this one was missing something for me. It’s an over the top mystery with a wicked bitch involved. Becky’s brother was a distraction. Seth’s kids are adorable, especially the older than his years Lucas

A sweet story of love, trust, betrayal and reconciliation, Always Been You makes us think of the what if's in our lives.... and wish.

The Blurb...

Seth returns home and Jared is determined to finally make Seth his. Unfortunately not everyone wants that to happen.

Seth Hall returns to his hometown for the first time in eleven years. Now a father of two, he vows not to let his past intervene when he sets up a happy, stable life for them. That is, until Jared, the boy who had broken his heart all those years ago, turns up wanting a chance with him.

Jared Stewart thought he had lost his only chance to be with Seth. When Seth finally comes home, Jared makes it his mission to catch Seth once and for all but unfortunately not everyone wants that to happen.

Will they be finally able to make a life for themselves together? Or will they be torn apart again, by people they thought they could trust?

Not for everyone, but...

The blurb says it all. Always Been You begins where Seth and Jared meet up and once more their love for one another resurfaces and they cannot ignore it or each other. Deep down in the relationship is a trust between two young men who faced betrayal from supposed friends and finally, years later, find that trust still strong. It is this trust that makes them communicate with one another and take up from where they had left off.

This is not the sort of plot that everyone can identify with or even want to read about. Some would say that this is too flimsy a plot; some would say that Seth is kind of pathetic; and some would say that this is a plot that is just too good to be true.

I say that these are the reasons why I continued to read this story and just enjoy.

Seth was bullied all his gay teen-aged life and Jared was there as his rock to hide behind and prop him up. He depended on this rock and when Seth is faced with a betrayal, his rock crumbled from underneath him and he floundered. He is unaware that Jared flounders too.

Fast forward eleven years later and we get two men, successful in their own rights, yet failures without one another. A tragedy brings them back together and their love flourishes.

This is where "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" comes in, with a twist of Psycho and Fatal Attraction. The character of Becky was scary. Jess Buffett succeeded in creating a psycho-woman who scared me and both characters.

As for Seth? I saw him as someone who relied on his rock Jared for most of his young years and the perceived betrayal was so traumatic that he runs and continued to run. When he gains his rock once more, his flight or fight instinct kicks in when danger is perceived. However, due to his trust in Jared, despite his initial response of flight, he trusts. This is a very common type of character, I have seen and met many like these. There are just some people who rely on their Jareds and are the better for it. The question of "what happens if" comes when or if they lose that rock.

Now for Jared? I saw him as a rock who needed a rock to hold on to: Seth. Many perceive a manly man or macho man in Jared but forget that these types of men have a need of their own: their own Seths. Without Seth, this rock can tipple topple and fall over and cracks start to appear.

I honestly enjoyed this book, even though I know that many will disagree. I just find the character of Seth to be so real and common that I feel they should have their happy endings. Yes, Seth relied on his rocks Jared and his parents, and many would see this as a weakness.

But is the presence of support groups considered a weakness? I see this as just a part of life and if that keeps Seth and characters like him, strong, who am I to disagree?

Oh dear. I had trouble finishing this; in consequence it took me ridiculously long to read.
For about half of it I was taking notes, writing even more than I usually do about all the ways this does not work for me But then I realized it’s not worth the effort.

Let’s get this straight. This is a hetero romance of old school, where one of the guys is the smug, powerful hero who manages everything about the woman, is possessive and forceful as hell, and smiles at his little woman’s antics or insecurities – until she insults him. To that he reacts with passionate manhandling and shouting, of course. And that’s just the first scene.

Jared does treat Seth like a moron or a child, and to be honest, Seth seems to regress into helpless mode pretty fast around Jared.
The sex, too, felt strangely heterosexual. Can’t explain how that is, since the basic mechanics were of course man-on-man. Just the way they reacted to each other, or the motions described. The only difference was the, er, exact location of entry, as it were. Oh well.

Details are off as well.
Seth left eleven years ago; Jared flashes back to two years ago repeatedly, but keeps referring to eleven years in the flashbacks. That kinda thing annoys me. (And why is it that almost every book I read teases me with inconsistencies regarding timing? I don’t see others ever commenting on it. Is it me? T_T)
There’s more that does not make sense once you start paying moderate attention. Lots that a good revision should have taken care of, improving the book hugely.

Even so, I probably still would not have enjoyed it. The writing is just too amateurish, reads more like an average fifteen year old’s first attempts at telling a story.
Which oddly makes sense, seeing how the interactions and people’s melodramatic eruptions and reactions might be more at home among teenagers than the supposed adults in the story.

Ah, now I’ve gone and scrapped all my notes, just to fill this space with babbling regardless.
I’m not giving up on this author yet; there’s lots of room for improvement after all.

An ok story even if I do not like the executions.

Seth seemed... weak willed from the start. Which seemed to compliment Jared's take charge manner. I would have preferred that he became angry when his children were threatened, became a protector, not panicked and curled up... He should have think of the children.

And there was an odd incident that I am not sure about...

Some people will probably hate the female villain. I liked that both MCs had nice supporting parents who became support systems in time of needs.

There were some parts I don't like, the rest was ok... A solid 3 stars.

The blurb sounded interesting and thankfully ARe provided an excerpt. I couldn't even get through that. There was already a mistake in the first sentence and the first few paragraphs were just dreadful.

Put it on my nope-shelf so that I won't accidentally buy this sometime in the future!

Seth returns to his hometown eleven years after having his heart broken by his high school crush. Now he’s starting a new life with his children and starting up his new bakery, when his long ago crush walks back into his life. Jared never understood why Seth left him behind and now he has the chance to make Seth his, but first they have to put the past to rest and sort out misunderstandings. But someone doesn’t want them to be together and sets out to tear them apart, can Jared convince Seth to stick around and fight for their love?

This is a great story of two young men who were driven apart by malicious friends, and then reuniting years later to discover love. Seth has been through hell, returning to his hometown with his children is the only thing he wants to do, but running into the man who broke his heart years before isn’t something he needed on his first day. Jared is excited that Seth has come home, he is determined to make Seth his and getting to the bottom of why Seth ran all those years ago is the first step. Jared is a very confident man, although he hid a part of himself when Seth left him, but after learning that Seth was injured Jared finally admitted to everyone what he really wanted and now he sets out to get it. Seth is a much more unsure character, he was ridiculed in school and then was hurt by Jared, so he is still sore years later. Add that to his recent loss and brush with death he does get emotional when those close to him are threatened.

Both characters are great and although at first there is some angst between them, they both recover quickly and dive into a rekindling of their feelings for each other. The relationship develops quickly and is both hot and loving, the children are sweet and cheeky and extended family wonderful. The storyline is good with a touch of malicious mischief, threats and a very unstable woman. I really liked how the story played out and I understood Seth’s reactions to the threats he received, I know some people don’t like crying men, but it really fits with the circumstances and wasn’t over the top.

I will recommend this to those who love reuniting high school crushes, an unstable threat, danger, hot sex, settling the past and a very happy ending.

Both Seth and Jared were sweet together. However, I couldn't get myself to like Seth! He just lacked strength in his character even after the trials he had been through. The story had some overly dramatic scenes, not to mention the break neck pace of their reconciliation and then being in a relationship. The bed scenes were HOT, of course, but I still think they moved too fast. Becky came out a little like a 2D evil witch stereotype. Seth's parents and Izzy were very nice and supportive, I loved reading about them.

I wish this book was longer. If it was, I think Ms. Buffet would have developed and deepened the characters. Overall, I rate this 3 Stars since I liked the ending. The couple's HEA was a very fitting end.

This is the first book that I have read from this author and I was so pleased with it. I wish that it can become a series. I can see so much potential for it. A little bit of young love lost and gained again, suspense, two shootings and a wedding. Great read.

3.25 stars probably, but not more.

I really wanted to like this more but it just felt too rushed and too slow at the same time. Either it was a tragic misunderstanding that left both men heartbroken for over a decade....or it wasn't - the speed of their reunion, dates and sex say it wasn't so traumatic as all that. The incident enabled Jared to realise his true feelings but he completely and utterly avoided Seth for the next 2 years even as helping him legally (which somehow Seth, responsible father and business owner, failed to notice). Seth loves and is close to his mum & dad but never returned to his hometown ever, in all that time. Becky was insanely obsessive and dangerous but was only triggered by Seth's appearance two years after her last date with Jared. . It was all too fast and too slow, which is a shame because actually nicely characterised otherwise, I appreciated the teenage misunderstanding, and the whole first love plot elements. The execution just needed some work.

I loved Always Been You. This story is well written, I laughed, I cried and even held my breath at times as I shared the emotions of the characters and their journeys.

Seth Hall’s high school days were some of his worst. Being the brainy, gay kid in school doesn’t always bring the best out in people. The one thing he thought he would always have though was Jared, even if he could only have him as a friend.

Jared Stewart was the typical high school jock, great looks, great body and popular. Jared had a secret though and one he was still coming to terms with himself. How could he have known one misunderstanding would cost him his best friend?

It has been 11 years since the night Seth and Jared last spoke. Neither one knowing what really happened but when Jared receives news Seth has been hurt he can’t breathe and heads for the hospital. A lot has changed in eleven years but one thing hasn’t the way Jared feels for Seth, but is he willing to put his heart out there and will Seth be prepared to listen. Can Seth and Jared come to terms with the past and move forward with their future or will some secrets be too much to forgive and ruin their chance at happiness forever.

J & Seth are a great couple but...

Okay, I like the two main characters, they had believable chemistry and got their HEA. There was not, however, much growth. After clearing up the misunderstanding in the first 10% of the book the only tension came from an extremely obvious secondary character. The rest of my issues come from little things that dragged me out of the narrative (Americans call it a counter not a bench, it's an elevator not a lift, bakers are at work around 4 am not 6, and it definitely is not dark at 5pm in New Hampshire in the summer, and the usual lack of quality editing that is rife in this genre....) If you're in the mood for a light read and don't mind little character development then you'll enjoy this story.

This is a good solid read with a lot of heat, angst and tears. Seth and Jared were sort of friends in high school, but then were driven apart. Now, eleven years later, the two reconnect when Seth returns to his home town after a near fatal shooting. Because of that event he has also become the parent of two kids, Ally and Lucas. The kids are biologically his, but who were supposed to get adopted by his friends who couldn’t conceive, but who died in the accidental shooting. Seth is starting a new bakery in town, and Jared’s sister is getting married, so they require his services. That’s how the two men meet again. Old flames get reignited, and second chances are given.

What happened eleven years ago is still fresh in everyone’s mind, including the horrible insane woman, Becky, who wants Jared for herself, and who with the help of her brother drove the pair apart back in the day. Lies and misunderstandings start getting sorted out, but old foes won’t let go so easily. It seemed evil people and fate conspired to break the aspiring couple apart, then AND now. Becky’s decline to insanity to threaten Seth AND the kids could become a hurdle too great to get past.

That’s a lot of adversities to overcome. But Seth and Jared get down to business too, and start talking, opening up past lies, and having phenomenal sex. I admit, a couple of times when the two guys got together in the sack I totally got chills. In a good way, I assure you.

So, this is a good read, not too long, with friends and families, sex and action, love and danger in equal proportions. The pacing is a steady climb toward climax, and the plot points are exciting enough to get the reader emotionally involved. I can easily recommend this.

However, this lost one star for me because the ending was just… unfinished. Instead of getting a view to the wonderful culmination of Seth and Jared’s relationship, we get an odd albeit not unforeseen confession that has no place here. It was just wrong placing for the scene, and because of it the story ends without the scene we’d been led to believe we would get. I was way disappointed.

But you read this story and judge for yourself. This is the first I’ve read from this author, and I wouldn’t mind reading more.

Seth is determined to make a new life with his two kids once he returns home after being away for 11 years. He never forgot the boy he fell in love with and when Jared comes back into his life, all his feelings, doubts and hurt come back full force. Jared lost his best friend eleven years ago and when he almost lost him two years ago he vowed to make Seth his once and for all. Now that he's come back to his life Jared is not missing his chance to be with Seth. Is the bond they forged as boys strong enough to hold up to the betrayals and the lies? Or will they never get the chance at all to make a life together?

I enjoyed this story, but there were some things that fell flat for me. Both Seth and Jared were interesting characters to get to know, but their story was full of misunderstandings, assumptions and betrayal. I could understand where each was coming from, but their coming together didn't feel believable to me. Yes, there was a connection and chemistry, but they never were together as a couple when they were younger and eleven years had gone where they were apart from each other. It is because of this that I can't easily believe that they would get involved in a relationship immediately after finding each other.

Add to that one sex scenes that felt out of place and some events that added nothing to the story and my disappointment kept growing. Although Jess Buffett's writing was emotional and entertaining, with an interesting conflict and a happily ever after, I just can't help but feel that Jared and Seth's story needed more. I believe that they needed more time to get to know each other, to make amends and to get used to being together, especially when they have two kids to think of. I do believe they are right for each other and that their love is genuine, I just think that it would help the believability factor if the story was longer and it spanned more than a few weeks.

All in all, Always Been You is a sweet, romantic story of second chances and new beginnings.

I received this title from the publisher through Manic Readers in exchange of my honest opinion.

Jared knows it was a big secret that made Seth run before, but he’s determined to get things straightened out and ensure Seth stays with him forever this time around. Unfortunately, there is someone in town who doesn’t want Seth and Jared together—someone who tried to get Seth to go away eleven years ago and intends to finish what was started now that he’s back.

Watching these two grow and find themselves, as well as love, was so sweet and emotional. Jared has a dominant personality, is determined, and will plow through whatever he needs to get his man. Seth is quieter and more sensitive. He panics a lot when things get to be too much, but over the course of the story he learns he has an inner strength that can see him through anything. He can fight. He just has to learn how.

I felt this story was really about growing up and learning to accept yourself just as you are. Ms. Buffett did a great job making me fall in love with her characters and really cheer for them. The storyline is believable and more than once, I found myself smiling as I read. There is plenty of heat and angst to keep me turning the pages as well. This sweet, emotional story will stay with me for a very long time to come.

I enjoyed this friends-to-lovers story. I liked the characters and felt sympathetic to their plight. Back in High School, Seth and Jared were on the verge of acknowledging how they felt about each other, when events drove them apart for eleven years. The plot had some good elements. However, I do think this book didn't fully live up to it's potential.

There was opportunity to provide more depth to the characters, to share more of what happened in the time they were apart - a lot would have happened in those eleven years. Some aspects of the story were too rushed. For example, the events that lead to Seth and Jared separation were explained but only at a high level, not fully delving into the emotional fallout. In truth, , just seemed a bit too convenient.

The immediate forgiveness and starting a relationship also seemed unrealistic, at least without a more detailed discussion of feelings. I also really struggled to fully understand why

Even though I think there are a number of areas where the story could have benefited from more depth, I still enjoyed reading the story of Seth and Jared. It was a nice hour spent reading of two nice guys with great families, who finally get their happy ending! But not before a bit of drama provided by the bitchy and deranged girl from high school.

Too sweet and sugary even for me. The premise is something I am interested in. I like series and a lot of the characters in the series were intriguing, but but....

I could not sympathize to Seth. He ran away from his perceived problem instead of confronting it. For a guy who claimed that Jared was his best friend and a good boy, he readily believed what his bully said and made decision for his future based on that. I could justify that stupidity with the fact that he was a teenager that time. And we all know, teenagers often make dumb decision. But to let the misunderstanding went on for 10 years? What drove him to such stupidity? Emo teenage angst 10 years ago just wouldn't fuel such longlasting grudge. He blamed Jared too for not contacting him, but couldn't he contact Jared? his behavior irritated me.

I am also confused about the educational background of the villain in this story, Becky. She enrolled in Cornell, was pulled out because she acted violently and harassed a staff member, and enrolled in Dartmouth. For someone with violent behavior history, to be accepted to an Ivy League university, don't they have to be very brilliant, or have a shitload of money (the family-name building kind) and at-least have the situation under control? If she is super rich(I assume that she has to be filthy rich to be able to be crazy and still study in Dartmouth), why doesn't it show and why is her brother a cop? I don't know, maybe it's just my ignorance about the working of Ivy League colleges, but I think it is more logical to just put her in local college that is easier to buy than Dartmouth. I kept questioning this that I couldn't get into the story.

overall, i liked this story. there were good and bad pieces to it though.

i love friends to lovers and i love second chance romances. this had both. what i don't love is the second chance having to happen because of misunderstandings, miscommunication and partially because of malicious acts of others. i also thought their reunion was a bit rushed. there was a lot of hurt and 11 years to build up that hurt and yet it seemed they forgave each other overnight, which is another piece i had a hard time with because of the children involved.

seth was bullied in high school because he was 'out' (although it seemed more like people just assumed he was gay and he just never denied it instead of making a bold claim). jared seemed to protect him when he could but never knew the full extent of the damage being done or the reasons for it.

seth and jared seemed to be a perfect pair with complimenting personalities and i would have liked to see more of their relationship develop at a slower pace upon reuniting. they both had supportive parents and some good friends.

there were a couple of pretty outstanding characters in the book - namely skye and possibly brandon, holly and isaac but i don't think we got enough of them to fully appreciate them.

the suspense piece of it was a little predictable but not terrible.

I really loved this book! Both of the main characters were well developed, attractive and interesting. I loved the town, the bakery and the kids. The time changes worked well. I liked seeing Jared and Seth as boys and then as adult. The author allowed readers to fill in the missing time at the same time the characters did which developed suspense.

This is a Nora Roberts-style gentle, cultivated New England romance full of big supportive families and quirky minor characters. It is not erotica. There is some sex, but the focus of the story remains on the romance between Seth and Jared. I haven’t read the author before, but I will be certain to look out for her other book.

Like too many good M/M books, it was very short for a novel. I wasn’t ready for it to end and I think the author could have spent another two hundred pages developing the minor characters, the back stories and the town even further. The kids were fantastic but I don’t think we were ever even told their ages. I also wanted to know more about Seth’s professional life in New York and Jared’s time at Yale. I’d love to see a sequel with Tyler or Skye’s story.

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.
