Encaustic is the art of painting with beeswax mixed with colored pigments and resin. This mixture is applied hot then fused with heat to bond each layer together. In the third edition of this popular book, Embracing Encaustic: Learning to Paint with Beeswax, offers illustrated step-by-step instructions that walk readers through the terminology, tools, and techniques required to bring this ancient art form into the modern studio. Topics include information on painting and fusing, adding and removing wax, photo transfers, incising lines, wax collage, adding texture and mixing your own encaustic medium and paint. The Inspiration Gallery includes 35 talented artists who not only share their work but also reveal their personal painting methods and explain why they are compelled to make the work they do.

This book is in two parts. The first (smaller) part has some basic information and some tips about a few encaustic techniques. It's mostly a small taste of what is available on her website/videos.
The second part of the book features beautifully photographed examples of work from many artists along with their own descriptions of the techniques used and artist statements about their overall works. This is really the meat of the book because Robertson selected a wide range of styles to showcase and included links to all the artist sites. This was one time when looking at an art book in ebook format had an advantage since I could tap over to the artist's site, then back to the book.
This book gives a good understanding of tools and techniques for someone like myself just beginning. Thanks to all the accomplished Encaustic artists who allowed their beautiful works to be viewed.
I enjoyed the techniques described in this book. There were a few things I will try soon with my own work. None of the encaustic artists that I love and follow we're included in the list of artists but that only shows how wide the encaustic art world is and it was nice to be exposed to Artists I typically wouldn't explore.
