Dogtooth Violet is a clam digger; and she's a girl. This colorful adventure takes place on an island in Maine. Here on the island, everybody has nicknames and the mudflats are frequented by some shady characters who do more than dig clams. Dogtooth Violet is a young clam digger in her twenties who lives with her niece and nephew in a ramshackle paradise on a beautiful cove. Her sister makes their lives miserable and threatens to sell the family homestead out from under them. Dogtooth Violet lacks the where-with-all to do much of anything about it, but not for lack of trying. One day while digging clams she meets a man on a yacht who changes everything. He loves clams and he falls in love with Dogtooth Violet. Mud over matter.
I spent most of my life gathering experience for my stories. It's hard to believe but from a young age I thought writing would be the ultimate art form. The various jobs that I've worked at are common; the number of different jobs I've worked at is uncommon.
Wall Street brokerage house clerk. Manhattan taxi driver. Wooden boat builder in Maine. Winter scallop diver in Maine. Fishing boat captain in the herring fishery from Massachusetts to Maine. I founded Maine's first grape vineyard and winery: Cellardoor Winery
As a visual artist I worked in oils, watercolors and flame-cut steel sculpture. Stephen King owns two of my pieces.
I have lived in Maine for most of my life and worked and played on Penobscot Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Having lived on three different islands, several of my books are based on the island world. Few people ever get to experience this earthy life, filled with smart, passionate and intensely wild characters.
