The Shadow Chronicles #1

K: The Awakening

Rate this book
“Fifty years ago the Shadows betrayed me, left me to wither slowly into nothing, chained deep inside a hidden mountain cave. Meanwhile they took control of my kingdom, killing or enslaving any who would dare oppose them. But I am a patient woman … and immortal. The Shadows should enjoy their reign of terror while they can, in the meantime, I will continue to stare at these dark walls plotting my revenge. After all, it is only a matter of time, and I have all the time in the world.” K.

In the small town of Vicaris, Mikel and his daughter Citera live in and run a small clinic. It’s often chaotic and overwhelming, but neither of them would have it any other way. But their desire to help those in need, regardless of race or status, has often made them a target of the harassment by the Shadows forces.

Even so, when their Full-blood friend Rigar shows up at the back door of the clinic with the emaciated body of a young woman, Mikel doesn’t hesitate to bring her inside. And when they find out only minutes later the Shadows forces, including their henchman the Enforcer, are heading their direction, Mikel bravely puts his life on the line to protect the mysterious stranger.

Unbeknownst to Mikel, this young woman is the immortal queen the Shadows have been searching for decades to find. And it doesn’t take long before Mikel and his friends find themselves thrust into the midst of an ancient feud that will eventually decide the fate of Vanteria once and for all.

I really enjoyed this one. The characters were all, mostly, likable with varied strengths an weakness and just a bit of blood and gore. A well done fantasy - but note there is no romance. I'm going on to the next book, so all good.

DNF 30%

It was taking too long to get going and I thought the dialogue was stiff. It could also do with a bit more editing, but mostly I gave up because I just wasn't that interested. If it hasn't grabbed me by 30% I figure it probably won't.

One to get lost in

I got lost into another world . I can't wait to read the next installment. The characters are complex but are written so well they are not hard to follow.

Magically epic tale

Don't know where to start with this one. An amazingly detailed, well paced, beautifully written take of persecution by those in power and the little guy rebelling. If you like stories like Thomas Covenant, Tolkien with the added twist of immortals and vampire like creatures...then you going to enjoy this!!

Love dystopian vampire novels? Look no further than K The Awakening by K.R. Fajardo. This is only my 2nd dystopian vampire read and I gotta say I loved it. Fajardo’s characters are multi dimensional, complicated people. They leap from the pages. This story has action, suspense and a little budding love story. I am looking forward to learning more about K’s back story. She seems very Bad Ass and I can’t wait to see her unleash her fury.

My favorite character was Jarod, the Enforcer. Jarod started off as this despicable Enforcer working as the henchman for the Shadows. As the story progressed and I peeled back his layers, I saw Jarod had a heart and the Enforcer was just the facade he was forced to wear.

The ebook also included a peek at the next book in the series, Linked. I can’t wait to read it in its entirely!

Good characters and a interesting world.

I really enjoyed this book and its interesting characters. A woman is brought to Mikel who's a doctor but she's no ordinary woman she's a Immortal who was put to sleep 50 years earlier by the Shadows. They are Full Bringers they are almost similar to a vampire they drink blood but can eat food but not Immortal like the mysterious K. The story is set 50 years after K is put to sleep I would have liked more information on the current world since we don't know if it's a fantasy world since there are cars, solar power being used as well as carts and horses. But I liked the different characters and really connected with them although the author switches pov in a middle of a chapter which I'm not used to reading. I've have enjoyed it very much.

It took me awhile to really get into this book, but I hung in there and around 40% in, things started clicking into place. There is still a lot of unknowns, even at the end of the book, but it has great world building and an original storyline. There are a lot of characters to keep up with, but the author does a good job with the cast. This is marketed as a fantasy romance, but there is not much romance in it to speak of – maybe that will be more defined in the coming books. All in all, this is a good start to a series although at times it felt a little too drawn out, but I’ve also found many first books in series the same way. It will be interesting to see where the author takes us in the upcoming books.. Reviewed by Cyrene

A unique twist on the vampire genre...

Although they are never called that, I would definitely put some of the characters into that class. But at the same time, none of the players even remotely falls into the usual lore and legend. But at its core, that's not what's important about this story. It's about life, family, friendship, hardship, and trust. And for varying reasons, all valid, trust might be the hardest emotion for any of them. And the most important if they wish to survive.
This tale is amazingly well written. It is creative, adventurous, at times heartbreaking. But it never once fails to hold your attention. Absolutely looking forward to the next installment.

Good story but could use some better structure.

A good story with integrating new world. A little difficult to get into the story in the beginning but it did get better and now am intrigued to read the rest of the series. The flipping between characters point of view was confusing so it would of been easier to relate to if it could have been one or two characters and only by each chapter instead of mixed. But the secrets are starting to unravel so makes it intriguing and there seems to be many more to come.

This book was really slow. I didn't connect with any of the characters. I have nothing against violence in a book, it's great when it enhances the story. But, every other page in this book someone is attacking someone else and it just felt completely gratuitous. I almost didn't finish reading it because I just wasn't that interested.

Awesome

Interesting new look at vampires with a twist. I liked that I didn’t know how this plot would play out. Kept me guessing and trying to learn more as I read. I love it when I can’t figure out the ending in the first few chapters. Great read!!!

I could not finish it. It started out at a good pace, but then slowed down a lot. The awakening took a long time to occur. I could not keep going, as it took so long to get beyond a lot of character background.

Didn't finish

I tried to read this but nope. I got to the 52% Mark and called it quiets. To me it felt t like the book, the characters anyway, were one big whine fest. Not a series for me but I hope the author does really well.

A different kind story, which at times was hard to follow. I wanted to stop reading it a number of times, but found I couldn't. It turned out to be an interesting read.

Wanted to like it. Didn't.

Two stars for the plot idea. I couldn't get past the slow, boring explanations of everything, whether it be people or situations. #smbslt

Not bad.

This was an okay read. I skipped through a lot of it because it was a little boring to me but I like the concept of this story so I made myself finish it.

Vampires and Terrians.....My interest has been caught.
This was a long yet very interesting story about a different world of vampires. The characters were awesome and the inner demons they faced made for a uniquely fascinating story. There were some places where I felt the story was long and drawn out and I did have a bit of trouble keeping up with the characters, because they would switch POV in the middle of the chapters frequently and you never knew who was going to take over with the story next. I also felt as if I couldn't connect with the characters very well either. This book did have its high points and it did give me chills while reading it in those areas. This author does have an incredible knack for storytelling and has really piqued my interest to read more about these characters and where the author plans on taking us. I also hope to have some unanswered questions answered too as the series unfolds more. I still do recommend this read.

I quite enjoyed this tale of vampires and humans living alongside each other. It's a fresh take on the classic Nosferatu tale, mixed with medieval and futuristic flavor.

My only criticism is that I found a few errors. But that's the editor in me.

Anyway, I also like that K was powerful but merciful. She was a vampire with - pardon the pun - some degree of heart. It's important to me that characters be three-dimensional. Check this out!

The first book in the series and the debut for the author. I was blown away with the writing, story, complexity of the world she created, number of characters she created and their development. I inhaled the book and the subsequent two books in the series. It looks like there will be more and I cannot wait.
Fajardo's writing is superb, complex, detailed and it flows beautifully. The story is interesting, complex, consistent, contains many characters, based on original idea and follows several situations in a parallel manner. The characters are consistent, well developed and sometimes contain layers of complexity. They are numerous: K aka Kajhoul, Jaron, Tyran, Jarod aka The Enforcer, Maya, Mikel, Citera, Dirik and some side characters. All of these characters are developed into detail and followed through the stories.
In this book we get introduced to the country of Vanteria and the harsh life of people in the town of Vicaris. Vanteria is ruled by three Shadows, cruel to no end. The situation in Vicaris is not good and it is not getting better. People are divided into races and classes, some living slightly better than others. Due to fate or combination of coincidental events, our main characters unwillingly end up on the same side and working towards the same goal. Their relationships are complicated and not without problems, and I cannot say all their problems get resolved by the end of this or the subsequent books.
I could not stop reading to see what happens next. All three books read like one continuous piece of work: K: The Awakening (The Shadow Chronicles #1), Linked (The Shadow Chronicles #2), and Forsaken (The Shadow Chronicles #3). Prologue of each book adds to the information we encounter later and to the layers of complexity of the story and the characters. I honestly do not have a clear idea where the series is going and this thrills me. It is a rare occasion that I meet a book, or a series or an author this good. All I have is praise, and if I could give it 7 stars somewhere I would. All in all, amazing books, and one of the best series I have ever read. I honestly cannot wait for the next book or books. I am hoping for plurality.

Love It

I was told about this book on Facebook and had to give it a try. I am not disappointed in the least. The characters gripped at my heart in so many different ways and I was constantly wanting to know what would happen next. The storyline is unique and felt like I haven't read the same story in different approaches. That is a huge deal for me. I found myself intrigued from the first two chapters in the book. I have my favorite characters already and that wouldn't have possible if they didn't have exceptional personalities and history. I would recommend this book to anyone. It's well worth the price and I wouldn't mind having a paper copy of this book for my bookshelf. I don't want to go into details because I think that it would spoil the unique storyline for the readers. I can only say that this is a book worth reading and giving a review on.

The Awakening by KJ Fajardo is a character driven story about the disruption of a physician’s family when an unconscious woman is brought to their clinic for care. Nothing will ever be the same again. What was once a peaceful, albeit, meager life is upended as the new patient, K, attracts the attention of many preternatural beings. I enjoyed this story very much, it is fairly meandering but does unfold solid world-building. It is a strong foundation for the sequel which I am looking forward to reading soon.
