About the author

Anna Dewdney was an award-winning children's-book author, illustrator, teacher, mother, and enthusiastic proponent of literacy and reading aloud to children. She was the author of the bestselling Llama Llama Red Pajama series of picturebooks, among many others. She lived with her partner Reed Duncan in Vermont where she worked, gardened, and spent time with her daughters and dogs.

This is my quarterly child's book entry. And this one is VERY basic: A board-book about llamas hunting Easter eggs, with a surprise ending. I will say that this is a very colorful book, and probably serves its purpose all right. I like the fact that author Dewdney chose an animal that at the time she began this series was probably new to many children. As for the verse and illustrations--OK, I guess, but no Dr. Seuss outing. In fact, most of the books I read back when I was a kid, though basic, were far superior in quality to this. As I peruse many of today's picturebook options, I see that most are pretty mundane, and really I think children are important enough that they deserve better.

Final note to gringos: The correct Spanish pronunciation of "llama" is "yama," not "lama."

Dewdney's stories are wonderfully simple, easy enough for children to memorize and begin word recognition, but still interesting, especially given the artwork and the various facial expressions! Just beautifully enjoyable learning opportunities for kids!

In this simple and rhyming children’s book, Llama is hunting for easter eggs. He finds some jellybeans and chocolate bunnies in the bushes. Then, he finds a magical surprise! It’s a bird nest, and one of the eggs is hatching! First a beak, then a leg. It’s a chick! Happy Easter, Llama!
Reason for recommendation: The text is written in rhyme, making it a fun and engaging read for young children. "Llama Llama Easter Egg" is a great choice for parents and educators who want to introduce young readers to the traditions and symbols of Easter, while also promoting important values like love, family, and togetherness.

It is supposed to be about Easter. It teaches it from a very secular view and it goes outside that as well. I am Christian and I don’t deduct stars for offering a different perspective, but the consistency in this Llama is awful. You can’t have the book shift from egg hunting to something completely off topic and then draw that into Easter at the end; this choice by the creator (or editor) sends mixed messages to the child being read to.

I would not pay for this book. Borrow it from the library first and see if you want commitment with purchase. Not the best Llama in the stack.

Anna Dewdney's Spring and Easter board book is great for the holiday season with toddlers to learn new vocabular words during Easter season, besides enjoying the colorful llamas and other animals. Any of the Llam Llama books are simple enough and interesting enough for the early readers. The surprise bird egg in the next at the end, as a leg appears first. A sure hit for young readers and a perfect gift from grandparents to give grandchildren.
