4.5⭐️ 4.5🌶

Tropes: older man, younger man, MFM, BFs son
Triggers: BDSM, Dub con, violence, open door spice

Are you looking for a how-to guide on how to get your dishwasher fixed on a friday night? Maybe you're looking for how to develop a daddy kink, when it's not really your thing. Does a southern gentleman get you going? No, how about a salt and pepper Dom. If your answer is yes to any of these questions, make sure you read this book. There are five spicy scenes in this book and two of them are two chapters long and will be sending you off to get some needed relief. Fav quote, "That nice ass of yours is going to look beautiful with my handprint "

ARC reader chiming in! I’m going to react as I read, so I will mark for spoilers below, but I will put spoiler free thoughts and feelings at the end for anyone who is unsure about this book.

That was a fun, quick read! Very spicy. Certainly very different dynamics between Janet and each of her men. I would absolutely have loved more, but I know there are more books coming, so I can be patient. Simple prose, good spice, and just enough plot-type stuff to keep things interesting.

I am going to preface this review with the fact that struggled with this book but mostly for my own personal tastes not because of the story or writing.

Things I liked:

I really liked the MMC’s Max was really interesting both his past and personality. I love a man who is so sure in himself that he has a capacity for cockiness, a big heart and sexually open minded.

As for Austen I hope in the next book we get to see his character growth and him come into his own maturity. He’s really sweet and sensitive I love that about him so watching his progression will be fulfilling.

The spice was well done and a lot more kinky than I expected but I wasn’t mad at it!

I am curious about how the past will play a part in the next books and I’m kinda excited to find out if we get to know more and how things play out.

The end will have you hooked for the next book, I love when an author makes me need to read the next one.

The pace of the story went at a good clip and there was no fluff to speak of.

Some of my struggles:

My brain cannot get on board with calling a dude “Daddy” I know many can and do which to each their own, it just pulled me out of the story.

Use of the word folds to describe the labia or outer vagina gives me such an ick, no idea why. However I would love for that word to never be used in a spice scene ever again.

The FMC repeatedly calling herself “a bitch in heat” felt weird to me but maybe that’s a turn of phrase I’ve never heard of outside its literal context. It felt like it was meant in a derogatory sense and not in a playful way to describe horniness.

I had trouble connecting to the FMC, she felt a little flat I wanted there to be more to her, maybe more back story or filling out of her personality more might have helped. I think more scenes with her living her life outside of the men and work would also be helpful in filling her out.

The BDSM / dominance was not well portrayed, explicit consent, boundaries, rules, etc. are all discussed before the activities that took place in the book actually happen. I encourage the author to do a little more research on the community and how things really go down with people who enjoy those kinks.

I first discovered "A Beautiful Mess" by Lizzie B. Brown when it was originally serialized on Kindle Vella. I was instantly captivated by the quirky characters and the romantic tension, eagerly anticipating each new episode as it was released. When I heard that it was being published in full, I was thrilled at the prospect of owning it outright and diving back into Janet's world!

The story follows Janet, a 40-year-old woman at a crossroads after a messy breakup. Her journey begins with a flat tire that leads her to Austin, a younger, charming gentleman with a playful demeanor. Their chemistry is instant, sparking an exhilarating connection that feels both fresh and exciting. However, it was Max, the older handyman, who truly captured my heart. I found him to be an instant love for me, and I was so happy that Janet met him. Max brings a sense of stability and wisdom to Janet's life, and watching her navigate her feelings for both men makes the story even more compelling.

What I particularly loved about this book is how Brown tackles the age-gap romance with sensitivity and humor. Janet feels authentic and relatable, wrestling with her own insecurities while embracing the complexities of love at her age. The dialogue is witty, and there were moments that genuinely made me laugh out loud.

The spicy content adds a tantalizing layer to the story without overshadowing the emotional depth. Each romantic encounter feels meaningful and well-placed, enhancing the overall narrative. Brown balances the heat with heartfelt moments, allowing readers to connect with Janet's emotional journey as she embraces her newfound freedom and desires.

Overall, "A Beautiful Mess" is a delightful read that left me eagerly anticipating more from this series. I hope to see a second book for this standalone, as Lizzie B. Brown has successfully crafted a charming love story full of relatable struggles, unexpected twists, and plenty of heat. I’m so glad I could finally own this story, and I can’t wait to see where Janet’s adventures take her next!

I really thought I was going to like this book, but i forget to lower my expectations sometimes when I see recommendations on Tiktok. I saw a excerpt on tiktok and loved the concept, but its kind of like a trailer for a movie or show. All the good parts are there to make you wanna watch and then the rest of Movie/show is just filler. In this instance the filler just wasn’t my cup of tea.

This is the first book that I have read from Lizzie. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this story in advance!

I have to say the MFM age gap both ways is what truly intrigued me about this story. How will the FMC coordinate an older suitor and a younger suitor and how will those dynamics differ. Do the men know each other, are they strangers? I think this is a rare twist on the why choose trope and I had to know!!

It wasn't a super convoluted read, which I appreciated, you got to meet all the characters fairly quickly. I didn't know any backstory before experiencing this trio, but I'm now learning that there's more than meets the eye so I'm curious to go back and see if I can fill in some of those pieces. There's a previous duet with Janet's ex that is supposed to give some light on her character before the beginning of the story.

Some of the decisions Janet makes are totally okay for a romance novel and you just go with it, but sometimes I did wonder about her. She doesn't always show herself in a good light, but I think her stressful job, a breakup and facing her ex at a wedding is probably compounding. Definitely giving her the benefit of the doubt, but I think its the MMC's that carried the story for me.

Lizzie has been amazing and so delightful to ARC read for so I'm excited to follow along and see what comes next (or maybe I should say who comes next hehe).

This one definitely brings the heat, there’s no denying that. The tension and spice are front and center, and the dynamic between Max, Austin, and Janet keeps things interesting from start to finish.

I really enjoyed seeing the different layers of their relationships. Watching how each character interacts one on one versus all together added a depth to the story that kept me engaged.

Austin is an absolute sweetheart, completely gone for Janet and so easy to root for. Max, on the other hand… I have mixed feelings. I loved him in his more dominant, commanding moments, but outside of that, I struggled. At times, his behavior made it hard to fully support him, especially when Janet was left second guessing herself despite him being the one to comfort her.

This is only the first book in their story, and there’s clearly more to come. By the end, it’s hinted that Max is holding onto something, which gives me hope that we’ll get more depth and hopefully more of his POV in the next installment. I just wish we had gotten a bit more from him here to feel fully connected.

Overall, I wanted a deeper dive into the characters to feel more invested, but for a shorter read, it delivers on tension, intrigue, and plenty of spice. I am excited for the next book to piece everything together and see how they end up! The writing was good, clear and had great flow. I enjoy Lizzie's writing style!

This book is a quick read, the chapters are short and the information digestable, however the plot just moved way too fast to be realistic, and the lack of dialogue between characters before smut scenes felt jarring at best.
There's also a cliff hanger ending which feels out of place in such a short book.

Janet
Janet is a 40 year old bank manager whose just gone through a bad break up when we meet her.
She does a lot of swinging from I've just been dumped how do I do this, to jumping into bed with two men. She also relies alot on both men for emotional support within an hour of meeting them, but the book also gives her a best friend, who seems to just be there for the exposition.

Max
An older handy man who hates dating apps but immediately goes to a womans house when she askes him to fix her garbage disposal via said app? He also has a weird relationship with consent and by weird I mean he never askes for it but everyone seems to get on board.

Austin
Arguably the most normal character, yes hes a bit intense but at least he notices that whats happening is weird and tries to stop it, but ultimately ends up on board because the woman he met two weeks ago is worth it?

So if you're looking a quick read and are not that bothered by any of the above you'll get on okay with it.

***I received a free copy from the author to provide an honest review***

Overall, it was a quick read.

My personal opinion is that there wasn't much holding the story together. With the FMC's failed relationship and his BFF spreading nasty rumors about her are only mentioned in the first chapter, with no real depth to how the FMC would feel hearing this from a so-called friend (I say that because she wasn't mentioned again). The rumors go no further than that someone is talking about her. I think it was more intentional to have a quick overview to justify why she ends up in a sexuationship with two men.

I didn't really understand why she was acting like a child with Max but an adult with Austin - it felt like she was two different ages at times. Not a 40-year-old woman, which sometimes made it difficult to relate to the character. I am assuming the author wanted the whole Daddy vibe and age-gap relationship with Max, but didn't quite pull it off. Whereas with Austin, she was a genuine cougar, and I enjoyed who she was with him, the younger man.

I would have liked there to be more depth to the characters and story with some high stakes/emotional reward, and I think that will be in book 2, which is a shame, as this could have been a longer book and more rewarding to the reader.

I hate cliffhangers, and this sadly ends on one.

Janet has recently gotten out of a relationship that just wasn't making her happy so she's making some decisions for herself - whether they are the best ones or not. Lucky girl meets a cute boy, Austin, that's a Southern gentleman but maybe a bit on the young side for her but he definitely makes it known he's interested. Janet's friend convinces her to try a dating app where she ends up matching with a handsome but a little older handyman, Max, that she ends up asking for home repair help from. Enter age gap sandwich!

While I liked the premise of the book (which is why I applied for the ARC) the writing fell a little flat for me. I liked that we get POV for each character to get to know them each in turn - and I can't help but think how this would sound with multi-narrators in audiobook! However, there was something in the pacing of the timeline, Janet reacts to everything very emotionally and with the same arguement every time, and every other scene ends up with her passed out.

This book is a short read so good for some easy, steamy entertainment. This part of the story ends just as our three MCs are trying to work out how to make this dynamic work but that's the part I was waiting to read. I wonder if my overall impression will change after another book in the series.

Thank you to Lizzie Brown for an advanced reader copy of this book.

an enjoyable read that delivers on the emotional chaos and steamy dynamics, but doesn’t quite hit as hard as it could. The premise is immediately compelling: a heroine staring down unmet expectations, a life in disarray, and two very different men stepping into the wreckage. That sense of “nothing is going how I planned” is relatable, and the book does a solid job capturing that messy, transitional phase where everything feels uncertain but full of possibility. The contrast between Austin’s charming, slightly cocky warmth and Max’s more controlled, experienced intensity creates a dynamic that feels intentionally unbalanced in a good way. There’s a clear effort to give each relationship its own flavor, and the chemistry—especially in the open-door scenes—is strong and unapologetically central to the story. If you’re here for the MFM dynamic, it definitely delivers. the emotional depth doesn’t always match the setup. The heroine’s internal struggle—grief over the breakup, fear about her future, insecurity about age and expectations—feels like it should hit harder than it does. At times, it’s glossed over in favor of romantic or physical development, which makes her arc feel a bit rushed or surface-level.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I'm giving this a 3.5 Star

When I first heard about this book I really loved the idea behind it. A forty year old woman where is a 12 year age gap with the young guy Austin and the silver fox Max. I love when I why choose involves a woman who is a bit older and the fact that Austin has a southern accent and Max was this older man with a lot of experience sold it for me.

As much as I wanted to adore this book and there were parts that I did...Janet frustrated me A LOT. There were moments when I was questioning if she was really 40 years old or not. I tried to understand because the woman just went through a breakup and that takes a toll on anyone. It just seemed like her personality kept changing throughout the book and I found it a bit hard to connect with her.

I freaking loved Austin. He was so freaking sweet and caring but he has this whole other side in the bedroom. The way he had me laughing and swooning was wonderful. He has my heart and I loved his POV chapters.

Max....sir the things you say haha. I loved how he wanted to be needed but I wish we had more of his POV chapters but I understood why we didn't because the moment we got it, it packed a punch!

I am interested in seeing how the second book goes with the cliffhanger I am currently hanging off of haha.

A Beautiful Mess Lizzie B. Brown
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

This was my first read by Lizzie, and I loved this book!! Going in at first o wasn’t sure what to expect but I was sucked in! I enjoyed the storyline so much! A rh is always my jam so I was all for this when I saw that in the tropes!!
Janet is a beautiful independent woman who doesn’t take no crap!! She can be a bit grumpy at times but that made me love her character even more! Shes newly single and exploring the dating world after being in a relationship for many years. Her journey starts when we meet our sweetheart Austin who is younger and a romantic!! He rescued her, and they hit off from there! He later planned the cutest date for our girl Janet!! And then we have Max who is the definition of the word daddy🤭 he’s a dom and gives Janet exactly what she needs! He owns his own repair company that Austin works for👀 the dynamic between these 3 is different but so good!!
I loved this book even though we ended on a cliffhanger!😩🤭 and I’m patiently (not really🤣) waiting til I can get my hands on book 2!

Tropes✨

I loved this book!! It was the perfect short, steamy read that I have been looking for! I’m immediately needing to see where the story takes us with Janet, Max and Austin!

Janet is coming off of a breakup and ends up meeting not one but two great guys that both attract her easily. She meets Austin first, a young, sweet southern gentleman. Next, she meets silver fox, Max, who is experienced, dominant, and scratches her itch for older guys. First she struggles with dating two different but equally hot guys. However, she quickly realizes that her chemistry with both guys is electric and enjoys being with each of them in their own ways. Soon, we find out that Max and Austin share a greater connection than just their relationships with Janet. Meanwhile she realizes that she doesn’t necessarily have to choose between them.

This book is super spicy and her scenes with Max and Austin individually are very hot. Not to mention when she finally gets to share them. I’m looking forward to more of Janet exploring her “hellcat” side with sweet Austin and submitting to dominant Max. I’m already dying for the next one! Thank you for the opportunity to preview this!

💜: “If you want something, use your words, sugar. Tell me you want to choke on my c**k like a good girl.”

“You know what they say, sugar. Gentleman on the streets, freak in the sheets.”

The meet-cutes were so entertaining and had me laughing, especially with how Janet reacted to them. I mean, what a way to meet and make a first impression. This poor girl has the worst luck, like it is following her around like a debt lol. The story was so good that I did not even realize it was over until that final chapter hit me out of nowhere. The writing was wonderful, with strong characters and great pacing. The humor was just another highlight, making this story even more enjoyable. Janet is one lucky woman, getting quite the balance of men. With everything thrown her way, I would say things are looking very good for her. Max gives off that silver fox, daddy energy, and let's just say he definitely knows how to work with his hands. Then there is Austin, the younger one with that white knight streak who is just as yummy in his own way. Now I am even more intrigued to see how everything plays out in book two.

I’m entering my why choose era, so when I saw Lizzie B Brown asking for ARC readers for her novel A Beautiful Mess, I sprinted to sign up. Janet, a 40 year old bank manager coming off a devastating breakup, meets Austin when she gets a flat tire and he stops to help. They exchange numbers, but he leaves without telling her his name. They talk for a week, but then Janet’s best friend points out how weird it is that she still doesn’t know his name and encourages her to download a dating app, where she meets Max. Sparks (and clothes) fly as we barrel towards an ending that Max, Janet, and Austin never see coming. I laughed, I face palmed, and I crashed out in the ARC reader chat with all the grace y’all have come to expect from me 😅 if why choose is your jam, you will absolutely love this book, so head to your favorite ereader to preorder A Beautiful Mess, which releases May 9th!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Max, Max, Max... I have no words. None. You make me want to misbehave just so you can scold me.
Austin, that honeyed Southern drawl would definitely draw me to you.

A Beautiful Mess is a pretty quick read and does end on a bit of a confusing and unexpected cliffhanger, so be warned if you aren't a fan of those. Overall, I found Janet pretty relatable. She's forty, has been through a pretty bad breakup, bought a house that is essentially a fixer-upper to help cope with the breakup, and somehow finds herself entangled in burgeoning relationships with two men - one 12 years older and one 12 years younger. The twist is that no one involved realizes that these two men not only know each other but also live together.

Great banter, super steamy spice, and good pacing. The ending was a bit jarring, but if I had known there was a cliffhanger coming, I think it wouldn't have mattered. I am definitely looking forward to reading the second book when it comes out!

This was such a fun and chaotic read in the best way. Janet’s life really does feel like a mess at the start, and it is easy to connect with how overwhelmed and stuck she feels. Watching her slowly rebuild, even when everything seems to keep going wrong, was one of the strongest parts of the story.
The dynamic with Austin and Max adds a lot to it. They are very different from each other, which keeps things interesting, and I liked how both relationships brought out different sides of Janet. The age gap element adds a little extra tension, but it never feels forced.
There is a good balance of humor, emotion, and spice, and the story does not take itself too seriously while still giving Janet space to grow. Some moments feel a bit chaotic, but that honestly fits the tone of her journey.
Overall, this is an enjoyable and character driven romance that leans into the messiness of life, love, and starting over.

Janet is my spirit animal! Lovable, but a bit of a mess, just trying to do her best. She makes some crazy decisions (but then, don’t we all), and finds herself wrapped up with not one but two devastatingly handsome men.

Austin - the Southern charmer - is immediately infatuated with her. Despite being several (several several) years younger than Janet, he is determined to make her his.

Max - the silver fox - likes to be in control and wants his girl to call him Daddy. Which Janet is more than happy to do. Their meet-cute is more of a meet-chaos, but it’s clear from the beginning that they are both very interested in exploring the tension and sparks between them.

This story is a fun, fast burn MFM why choose that I absolutely cackled my way though. The banter is top notch. Janet is so unbelievably relatable and human in her messiness. And Austin and Max are two of the best book boyfriends a girl could ask for.

Thank you to Lizzie B. Brown for the eARC!

ARC Reader!

Considering I finished it in a day I'd say this book was AMAZING!

I'd give this one 4.5 stars only because I wish we had a little bit more at the end but other than that no complaints from me.

Loved the very different dynamics between Austin and Janet's relationship and Max and Janet's relationship and I'm excited/nervous to see how those dynamics come together for a why choose situation. Spice level was fairly tame but spicy nonetheless for a rom-com setting.

My favorite scene was Janet and Austin's date, Austin is such a puppy and I adore him! Max had me giggling and kicking my feet like crazy, takes me back to Birthday Girl and Praise with the Daddy trope🤤 he had some pretty great one-liners too!

I'm very excited to read more and I hope it comes very soon!

Well done Lizzie💜

The age gap you didn't know you needed

*keeps trying to swipe left* Where's the rest of it?! You can't just leave me hanging like that. I need more! Obviously, this ends on a cliffhanger, but instead of irritating me,it just makes me want to read more about these three.

The trio scene was fun, but I really enjoyed the separate spicy scenes because we really got to see the differences in the two men. I love Max's total dominance of Janet, don't get me wrong, but I really love Austin. His gentle, but fierce dominance of Janet made my heart flutter. For some reason, I figured that would be Max and Austin would go for total dominance, but you flipped the script on me and I am here for it.

I cannot wait for the next part to see how things continue to play out for the three of them. But can we get a good honest conversation going? Please? The three of them really need it.

So I was lucky to get this book as an early read. And I hope to read more of the authors writing in the near future. It was different than my usual reads. But I enjoyed the book. And I loved the way the author described well everything. lots of details. It had some super light moments when I was smiling and just so lost in the book. What I wouldn't give to be able to land in A Beautiful Mess like Janet. I mean to be breakfast, dinner, or desert with Max or Austin would be fine with me. This was a scrumptious weekend read.

This book was a quick little delight. I gravitate toward books with older FMCs and in this one the FMC Janet is 40. The story moves fast, which it would have to for the book’s length. It does take away from the story a bit. The type of relationship dynamic in this book needs more time to build up, in my opinion. Especially when involving characters that are not already in the life style. That aside, the characters are likable and the smut is definitely smutting. I was not expecting it to end as a to be continued, story. I would have loved to see a full length book.

This was a delightfully emotional and spicy quick read. The messy emotions and relational conflict are balanced perfectly by some very steamy scenes, and I can’t wait to see this love triangle develop into more. My only complaint is that I have to wait for the rest of the story!

⭐️: Barely finished, almost DNF
⭐️⭐️: Finished, but was nothing wonderful
⭐️⭐️⭐️: Enjoyed, but would probably not read again
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Highly enjoyed, would likely read again
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: This book is now a part of my regular rotation to re-read and/or changed my brain chemistry

Holy smoke, this book was so good! 😍

Imagine a 40-year-old brat, a charming younger man and a hot silver fox, aka his dad’s best friend. What could possibly go wrong? 😅

A very flowing and intriguing story and spicy at the right point. Both men are dominant but daddy Max 🔥🔥🔥

Really loved their dynamic, how they handled the situation. ❤️

Can’t wait until the next one in the series. If it’s going where I think, I’ll have to prepare with a fan! 🥵

I was so upset when I realized that the book was finished that I almost launched the Kindle. 🙃

I need the next one now!! 🥲

♥️ MFM Romance
♥️ Age Gap & Reverse Age Gap
♥️ Taboo Romance
♥️ Blue Collar MMCs
♥️ Cinnamon Roll MMC
♥️ Silver Fox MMC

Short and sweet with some good spice. But I need more! Max (silver fox MMC) and Austin (golden retriever MMC) each balance out Janet in different ways that help her deal with the stress and grief that’s she’s going through. She needs both of them and they need her.

I really like Max and Austin and their individual differences and similarities had me smiling and kicking my feet several times.

This ended on a cliffhanger and I need the next book!! I need to know how this situation works out!

When I saw “age gap why choose” I knew I’d love this book and it was such a fun read! I wasn’t expecting to relate to Janet so much and it made it so easy to understand her thoughts and feelings.
Austin was such a sweetheart and such a gentleman and definitely stuck to whatever he put his mind to.
Max was an immediate favorite. Who would love a silver fox who knew what he was doing? YES PLEASE DADDY!
This was such a fun read and it’s definitely what I needed. Very excited to see where Janet, Austin and Max’s story goes! I need book two right now!!

Janet's story is absolutely everything I have been patiently waiting for and more! Janet is such a brat but absolutely doesn't realize it. In comes Max, the most dominant, silver fox known to man, and man an I jealous of her😮‍💨 And then you stir Austin into the mix, the goofy, definitely golden retriever vibes. And they just make an absolute amazing thruple honestly. Do people even still use that word?😂 Who knows.

I loved the story, and the spice was so good. I loved both Max and Austin and each of their relationships and chemistry with Janet. I loved the age gap going in both directions for Janet, and I can’t wait to see what happens with the rest of their story.
