Southern Shield #1

Without Restraint

Rate this book
The first novel in the explosive new Southern Shield series from New York Times bestselling author Angela Knight explores the intoxicating games between a female cop and a Navy SEAL—and the killer instincts of a secret enemy watching every move they make.

Atlanta deputy Alexis Rogers and Navy SEAL Frank Murphy know all about power and restraint, necessary force, and pushing their limits. When they meet in the darkness of a BDSM club, their skills are put to use. With each successive night comes a new adrenaline rush, and while they’re falling into something perilously close to love, their games are still too private, too extreme, and too daring ever to be exposed.

But their intimate lives are upended when a fellow deputy of Alex’s is killed. It’s not a tragic hazard of the job. It’s cold-blooded murder. And he’s not the last to be taken out. Now Alex and Frank have found themselves more vulnerable than ever—and exposed to a killer with a twisted vendetta who turns desire into the most dangerous sensation of all.

Well! That was a lot of book with a lot of sensitive issues being brandied about. Whew, boy!

This one totally caught me by surprise. Pretty much from page one since I don't read blurbs and was expecting scifi-ish something and walked right into an erotic BDSM romantic suspense. Um. Hello, flogger! lol I'm good with that though. I do love a bit of spice. And spice it had!

The quick of it is that there's a cop killer terrorizing this town. Not only that but they're targeting minorities--those that are gay, in interracial relationships or into kink. You know pretty much from the get go who is behind the killings which can be a fine line of making things too transparent vs keeping the reader engaged. This kind of did both. I wished I hadn't known from the get go who was behind it all but at the same time watching it unfold and Frank and Alex deal with the fallout hitting their precinct pulled me in.

I loved the characters. Both the hero and heroine are cops. He happens to have been a SEAL as well and a Dom and does the growly alpha male oh so well. She was pretty badass too. Submissive but very much a fighter and challenge. I enjoyed them both. Their strengths and weaknesses and the chemistry between them. Things happen VERY fast but while reading it was easy to forget they'd just met. They just worked so well together it felt like they'd always been together.

The sex scenes were hot but had a bit of old school to them. There's lots of creaming and such which...not my favorite but it was okay. On the BDSM front I enjoyed the scenes but it also was a very BDSM 101 type read. Both characters were experienced but it very much assumed that the reader was not and was completely new to any lingo. So everything was explained. That got a bit annoying to me. It was a bit heavy handed and instead of working ideas into dialogue the characters thought them. So seeing a sub go into subspace and then the character thinking. Subspace is when... Once that kind of thing was passed it was very hot though.

There were a lot of sensitive subjects breached on the suspense side which is going to make this a hard one for some readers. Cop killings, race, homosexuality, the stigma of kinky lifestyles. Maybe not the best time for this one to have been released but maybe. If any of those set off your triggers probably not the read for you.

Overall, I enjoyed this one. I did have some issues--mainly with the writing style--but I loved the characters and spending time with them which will have me picking up the next to see what happens to the rest of the cast.

Without Restraint was one of those books that took me a while to get through. And to be honest, I have no idea why! Big, hulking police men and BDSM. What more could I want?? The writing was good, the characters were strong, sexy and believable, and the sex was kinky and hot. The plot was interesting and I was turning the pages to find out how it would be resolved.

It didn’t drag, it didn’t go into unnecessary detail. And yet, I felt as if it took me forever to read this book!

Both Alex and Frank are police officers with a penchant for BDSM. After meeting through mutual friends, they fall into a Dom/sub relationship pretty quickly. While the sex was steamy, it still felt to me that the connection was awful fast for a relationship that requires a lot of trust. But, I was willing to take it on face value and go with it. Frank is ex-SEAL and seriously smoking hot, and Alex challenges his ideas of what he wants in a sub by standing up to him and making him earn her submission.

When Alex’s mentor is killed and Alex and Frank become the next targets, their relationship ratchets itself up. What is interesting about this is that it is not a mystery who the killer is. As the reader, you know from the very start. What made it interesting though was watching the killer interact with everyone and his observations about their reactions to his crimes.

Overall, I found Without Restraint to be a good start to a new series. I’m not sure whether the series is going to focus on cops as the common thread between the books or BDSM (keeping my fingers crossed for the best of both worlds and kinky cops that are into BDSM!), but either way, I will be on the lookout for the next one to be released.

I'll start by saying this book was beyond HOT! I love when a BDSM relationship is well written. Not only is the sex hot, but that level of trust and respect really adds so much to the depth of a relationship. It really takes it to a new level of "bring the batteries" for me.

The pleasant surprise in this book however, was the absolutely engaging story! It had such well-developed characters, and did an excellent job connecting them to the reader. Alex was strong, and still loved to be submissive. I love when a woman is not afraid of stereotypes and just goes for what makes her happy. Frank was the sexy alpha hero in every way possible. Trustworthy Dom? Check. Sexy as hell ex-military? Check. Strong man not afraid to be sensitive? Check. You should probably just swoon now. I did, just remembering.

Then there was that edge of your seat suspense. Ahh, it was heartbreaking! It was thrilling! It was impossible to put down. So, do yourself a favor. Buy some extra batteries, grab a glass of wine to calm your nerves, and schedule some uninterrupted time with this book. It's well worth it! ~ George, 5 stars

The blurb for this one sucked me in and I am so glad that it did. This story had so much suspense and mystery that it kept me flipping the pages as quickly as I could. And then there was some kinky BDSM throughout it as well – a perfect combination!

“Suck up.”
“But you like it when I suck.”

Frank is a former SEAL and is now a cop. He is also a Dominant; a swoon-worthy, bullwhip wielding, caring Dom. There is an instant attraction to Alex when he is set up with her by his friend during a kinky party. The two hit it off immediately and it is hot!

I don’t want a nice man, Ma. I want a man who will beat my ass with a riding crop. Which was not something she could say to her mother. Ever.”

Alex is into two things – kink and kicking ass. She is also a cop and when she finds out that her new Dom is also working for her department, things get crazy. Throw in a sniper trying to kill her and her friends and this story blew me away.

“I’m your master, darlin’ And you’re my submissive. I don’t need to collar your neck if I can collar your heart.”

I really loved this story. I couldn’t put it down. The entire cast of characters was fantastic. I loved the other cops, especially Ted. I adored Alex’s family. I will definitely be checking out more of Ms. Knight’s work. ~ Tiffany, 4.5 stars

Ok this is a new contemporary series by this author whose paranormal work I adore! Could a more suspense driven storyline grab me just as much? It would seem so as this author has taken what's fast becoming a popular idea of mixing romantic suspense and adding elements of BDSM and then adding her own unique sexy and totally off the charts twist!
This story features a female cop who is more than happy to play kinky games in private. Oh yes Alex does enjoy being a submissive but her last Dom abused her and now trust does not come easily. What Alex needs is a man who can meet and hopefully exceed all her expectations. Well allow me to introduce Frank, a tough former Seal who has no time for dabblers or brats but the thought of controlling tough uber feminine Alex is the most exciting prospect he's had in a long while. From their first sexy encounter which involves naked wrestling ( I kid you not) to the brutal slaying of a much loved friend this book just pulls you in. Yes it's a hot romance so keep iced water and a fan close by but it's also a brutal, shocking read dealing with prejudice and ignorance . Plenty of sizzling scenes but it's the drama that unfolds that kept me riveted . This story has dangerous violent elements too and although as a reader we know far more about the villain than in some books I've read it still had a shocking conclusion although admittedly for this reader it seemed just too easy . So much happens in what is a quite short time frame and yet it works and happily I get the ending I wanted.

I was in the mood to try a new to me author and a hot romantic suspense so I picked this one up after reading the blurb. Whew, yeah, it jumped right in on the hot stuff and the suspense wasn't far behind. It was a moderately engaging read that definitely lived up to my expectations.

The story opens with Alex Rogers, Deputy Sheriff and submissive way in the closet attending a Kink party at her friend's house to meet a potential Dom that Cap vouched for. Alex recently got out of an abusive relationship with a jerk claiming to be a Dom and she is gun-shy of it happening again. One scene with Frank Murphy and she can tell the difference really quick that he is the real deal. He gives off the Dom vibes, but also has a real Dom's need to care for his sub. He gives her the rough play she wants and needs, but he holds back so not to hurt her and always checks to make sure everything is consensual and that she is fine. She is rattled to discover that he is part of her other life, too.

Ex-Navy SEAL and now new deputy, Frank is thrilled to meet Alex. Things went well and he looks forward to more though he knows he needs to be careful after her last relationship. But then things heat up at work when Alex's mentor and work partner is killed. The department is rattled by the implications that they have a cop killer on their hands. Frank and Alex are also in the killer's crosshairs and they pull together since they are now new partners. Meanwhile the killer plans to make Alex hurt over each loss and then pay the final price for his need for revenge.

Alright, so this one was a blend of erotic heat and suspense. I liked it enough to read through enjoying most of it, but not engaging with the story completely.

Things were exciting and moved rapidly without as much development and build up. The author chooses to reveal the killer and his purpose right away so it is a matter of the reader knowing what his plans and wondering how Frank and Alex will end up stopping him. This took away the opportunity for the natural tension of not knowing where the danger is coming from, but knowing its close. I think the killer could have still done narrative bits between Frank and Alex's thoughts, but just not with the name and obvious stuff revealing exactly who he is.

The relationship was explosive and quick. They weren't spouting I Love Yous or even feeling it right away, but it wasn't long before they were feeling it and sliding into deeper relationship thoughts. I wanted to see more of connection outside of their work and the play room, but there was enough that it wasn't too big of a stretch for the romance. To be honest, I took a while to buy into that working until Frank brought up the fact that she is a switch, not just a submissive, and then her less than submissive behavior made sense. Alex was my first 'switch' and it was interesting what that brought to the D/s relationship they were engaging in. She enjoyed being Dominated, but there was a part of her that was calculating and controlling and not so much because she wanted to please as she wanted to gain satisfaction for her needs. I understand from what I've read that submissive is a power role because it is willingly relinquishing control, but it felt very different with Alex if that makes sense.

The writing style was tough for me and the part that made me only feel moderately connected to the story. I stumbled over the pauses to explain BDSM terms that read like bits from a glossary and having the lifestyle beat me over the head every other word as the story went along. There was a lot of telling in other areas, too. The reader is rarely allowed to be intuitive and it wasn't as fun having the story spoon-fed to me.

That said, there is some good aspects to the story. Their scening was fun to read. I loved that they could play and there were some creative scenes like the hunter and hunted in the woods. That was so cool, too, how he as a Dom shut that scene down when she wouldn't and he could see she was uneasy.
I also thought the attention to the setting of their patrol work for the Sheriff's department felt authentic and was glad that it wasn't just a minor background detail. It was also a nice layer of depth to include their families and that they came from two very different situations. They are also refreshing characters who have baggage, but they handle their stuff like adults. They are both protective and do impulsive acts to help others, but don't foolishly pull stupid stunts.

In the end, I was glad to have read it and think those who enjoy mild to moderate BDSM reads with a suspense element would possibly enjoy this one.

My thanks to Penguin Group for the opportunity to read this one in exchange for an honest review.

Without Restraint is one of those books that's really hard to rate. There were some parts that I absolutely loved and some parts that just did not work for me. And to be quite honest, the first few paragraphs alone had me almost DNFing but I'm glad that I pushed on.

So, the book opens up to our heroine, Alex, watching the hero, Frank, doing a BDSM scene with another woman. Now that alone is enough to put me off but I decided to skim to see if I could get past it, and luckily, after skimming I was satisfied enough with how it went down that I was able to read it without it tainting my view of Frank. And for my safety peeps on Goodreads, he doesn't actually do anything sexual with the other woman... Thank goodness!

Alex and Frank have been emailing and getting to know each other for a while now after a friend of theirs set them up but they hadn't actually met before the party, so after Franks scene, him and Alex decide to get together in a more quiet location so they can get to know each other better. This was probably one of my favorite parts of the book. You see, Frank is a Dom and Alex is a Sub in the bedroom but a badass out of it, and rather than submitting right away, Alex definitely makes Frank work for it which I loved.

Imagine their surprise, though, when they both show up at work the next day to realize that Frank is the newest member of Alex's department. Alex is a little worried about her lifestyle being found out with her new Dom living in the same town, but the attraction between the two is just too hard to ignore. And let me tell you, the sexy times between these two is definitely worth the risk of getting found out, in my opinion anyway.

Frank and Alex definitely didn't have the typical D/s relationship, and while I enjoyed watching Alex make Frank work for it, it also made it hard to really believe that their relationship had any hope of working in the long run. Not to mention that even Frank admits on more than one occasion that he doesn't know if Alex is submissive enough for him. Which is where my main issue is with this book... One minute you're telling your friend that you don't think it's going to work out and the next minute you're taking her to meet your mother... Huh?!

Aside from the romance, we also have a great suspense aspect that really made this book for me. We know who the villain is right away, which would usually ruin it for me, but in this case it actually made it better... Watching the villain do his dirty work then popping up to help Alex and Frank out... Priceless! And I couldn't wait to see when he would make his move.

Overall, this was an okay read with some really great parts and some other not so great parts, but I'm glad that I gave it a chance. I really would have loved an epilogue but I'm hoping since this is the first book in the series, that we'll get to see more of Alex and Frank in the future.

I have not been this torn about a book for a long time. Parts of it I absolutely loved and other parts I really disliked and found hard to get past.

Here is a story about Alex and Frank; Alex a cop and Frank an ex-NavySEAL who just retired and moved home and is about to join the sheriff’s office where Alex is a deputy. This is not where they first meet however – the first time they meet is at a BDSM party the night before where they have been set up by the party coordinator. Frank is a dom and Alex ends up being his submissive but they aren’t your typical BDSM pair – not that we should expect them to be considering Alex is a cop one who can bring down men twice the size as her. She has not responded to vanilla sex in the past so she believes that the only way she can enjoy it is in a BDSM relationship.

What I loved – this is the first time I have read Angela Knights books and she does a great job with disposition – I could see the places and the people clearly with her descriptions. There is a great mystery that Alex and Frank have to solve that again I thought was a great part of the story. The author does tell the reader early on who the villain is but I was ok with that – the suspense leading up to the capture was fantastic. I loved the relationships as we meet the additional characters and the relationship between Frank and Alex. They both have baggage that has impacted them in the past but how truly open and honest they were with each other was refreshing.

What I didn’t love about the story was the BDSM; under normal circumstances I have no issues with the dom/sub dynamic. Its not my first go to but I am ok with it. In this case though Frank and Alex to me are not a dom/sub nor are they in that type of relationship. Frank is a true alpha male but Alex can dish it out and be just as dominating and strong has Frank and she does so throughout the book. Their sex life is unconventional and kinky but that was part of the fun, what I started to have issues with was throughout the book especially towards the end where they kept referring to each other as dom/subbie when it was just 2 people protecting each other both taking each role as needed. The constant reference to the BDSM was unnecessary and distracting from the main part of the story which to me was the mystery and the two of them falling for each other.

I am going to recommend the book based on why I loved it – I think the dynamic of all the characters and the love story between Frank and Alex is worth the time.

This is the first book in Knight’s Southern Shields series. It is definitely a contemporary romance but does have an erotic twist as the two main characters are involved in BDSM.

The female protagonist in this novel is Alexis Rogers. She is a deputy on a police force in Georgia and is an independent, confident, strong woman. She is also a sexual submissive who is an active part of a BDSM community in North Carolina. While at an event there, she meets Frank Murphy, a former NAVY Seal and sexual dominant. They have an electric encounter at the event and decide to pursue a BDSM relationship. A main focus of this story is the sexual chemistry and relationship between Alexis and Frank. As BDSM stories go, this is fairly tame (lots of bossiness from Frank and spanking of Alexis) but there is an overall chemistry between the characters that is nice.

The other part of this story is almost like a police procedural. There is a crime early on in the book that affects Alexis personally and a major focus of the plot is the resolution of this. Sections of the book are written from the perspective of the criminal so the reader knows from almost the first chapter who the “bad guy” is that Alexis is searching for. I think this aspect of the plot was supposed to increase the tension and feeling of “danger” within the story, but it mostly bored me.

What I liked: Alexis and Frank were likable characters and had interesting back-stories that made them seem realistic and three dimensional;

What I didn’t like: Reading passages from the “bad guy’s” perspective; The mystery/police elements of the story (just not a genre I enjoy); The BDSM aspects of the relationship were not that interesting.

Final Verdict: If you like BDSM and police procedurals, read Natural Law by Joey Hill. It’s a much sexier, interesting, and better written book.

A hot read. The heroine is a submissive and the hero is a Dom. They are both police officers and the hero is a former Navy Seal.

The hero and heroine like to spar together, and then have kinky sex. I liked the scene where he chases her down in the forest while wearing camo paint on his face.

It did have a few sad moments because they are hunting a killer who shot the heroine's friend. And the author makes a point of including the sad funeral scene.

One issue: the author has written a previous book where the heroine's name was Alex. This book had a heroine named Alex too. Use a different name.

Other than the sad funeral scene, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to other books being released in this series.

REVIEW:
This novel hit all the checkmarks for me; romance, hot sex and explosive danger. The best part was that nothing overshadowed the other and it all flowed believably throughout the book. I liked Alex and Frank right away and their chemistry was a foregone conclusion. The BDSM was not too hard for the casual reader and I liked the imaginative interplay between the two. That made it fun and slightly different than the usual BDSM novels. The murder mystery and danger was a real page turner as well with a bad guy you love to hate. A very fun book that has me excited for the next installment in the series.

Wow. Okay, so this was my first Angela Knight read and I was a little shocked at the beginning of the book where we are watching the hero whip someone else's wife in a BDSM basement. I knew there was going to be this type of stuff in the book, but I didn't realize the author wasn't going to--for all intents and purposes--lube us up and ease us into the BDSM element of the story.

After that, I couldn't enjoy the rest of the story, nor did I want to find out what happens. I thought that technically, the book was written well, but I think I would have liked a scene like this farther in the book instead of right at the beginning of the story. If the author was going for shock value, she succeeded.

Perhaps if this book were released a couple years ago, I wouldn't have reacted so strongly to it. In the wake of many tragedies making the news, I found parts of the plot to be in poor taste: the talk of a killer getting a gun and murdering few people, the setting of South Carolina, the references to racism and instances of white on black violence, a man driven to a shooting spree on account of a woman's rejection, the depiction of women with mental illnesses.

The quality of writing isn't why I'm rating it so low. These issues I've listed above really upset me while reading. This may be a great book, but it's not a book for me.

Only 90 pages in, and, nope, not going further.

1) we know who the murderer is - so no suspense at all.

2) we know Alex and Frank fancy each other and will be a couple by the end.

3) I just cannot, cannot stand the gratuitous sex between the above-said couple whenever they get together - totally, totally unnecessary.

While I did really like this book, it didn't give me the same kind of thrills that the first few books I read by Knight did. The BDSM aspects were good, and I liked the main characters, but that was a special spark that was missing for me. Again, I liked it, but I didn't fall immediately in love with it.

Why did I wait so long to finally read this book? And where is the rest of this series? I can only guess that not enough people picked this book up and the publisher didn't continue this on. That is a CRYING Shame. C.R.Y.I.N.G. SHAME. I enjoyed this book so much more than I expected. I really wish I had read it when it first came out 6 years ago. Maybe if we get enough readers interested, the author may self-publish other books in this series.

Full disclosure, I added this book on my shelf so long ago, I forgot what it was about and I didn't read the book blurb. All I did was look at my TBR shelf, find an author I haven't read in a while and picked their book. I am so glad I picked this one. Wow, this book starts off with a kinky BDSM scene ... using a bullwhip. Mmm, I've been bullwhipped before and it is delightful in the right experienced hands. I didn't think I would like it but I was wrong. So this first scene definitely pulls me straight into the book and I read this all in one sitting.

Alexis Rogers is awed at the power and restraint used by the dominant while she watches him with a submissive. When she is introduced to Frank Murphy, attraction sizzles between them and they work out their arrangement for her to be his submissive. No one is more surprised than Alex to find that Frank is the new deputy at the sheriff’s office where Alex is also a deputy. Frank is a former SEAL and is assigned to the day shift while Alex works nights. This schedule changes when Alex’s friend and fellow officer is gunned down and left in the street. Frank is now assigned to the night shift with Alex as investigators try to find the gunman. While Frank and Alex enjoy their relationship, everyone is on edge as investigators find a hidden camera in the deceased officer’s home and a bug in Alex’s cruiser.

A cop killer is on the loose. Sheriff's Deputy Alex Rogers is in the middle of it, with ex-Navy SEAL Frank Murphy aided her.

I've looked for an Angela Knight's novel since I read her two novellas. This is the first I found, and what a disappointment.

The characters are reduced to their physical attributes and their sex preferences. There is really nothing to like or dislike about Alex or Frank.

I don't know where the author is going with the story. From the beginning of the book, we know who the killer and the intended target are. We know what the killer plans to do. It's not until the middle of the book that it captures my attention.

Without Restraint (Southern Shield #1)by Angela Knight

My Review:
I really really loved Without Restraint.. It totally had the old Angela Knight feel to it. Totally brought me back to the days that made me fall in love with her work to begin with.
The sex was hot, the plot was exciting, however I should mention that there are a lot of major topics that come into play that may or may not cause readers to feel uncomfortable if they are content sensitive to things such as sex, race, cop killing etc.
I have to give the author credit for being brave enough to release a novel with such heavy handed topics in a time in our country where these issues are forefront on every news outlet. Nature of topics aside I felt the story was written well but keep in mind that its an introductory novel to a new series so you get a lot of extra meat in the set up I have a feeling will eventually "clean up" once we get into further installations.
One note to be added about the intimate relationship of our h/h is that as a gimme from the blurb this is supposed to be a BDSM couple but the sex is defined rather quickly and the personalities don't quite mesh with a sub/dom couple it is also rather mild for BDSM but it has plenty of "play" to keep readers enjoying the kinky treat.
I would definitely suggest and pass Without Restraint on to others that are fans of Angela's work.

Frank is a former SEAL and is now a cop. He is also a Dominant, a swoonworthy, bullwhip wielding, caring Dom. There is an instant attraction to Alex, when he is set up with her by his friend during a kinky party. The two hit it off immediately and it is hot!

“I don’t want a nice man, Ma.

(4.5 stars)

A Cop, a former Marine and a cop killer all come together for a book that will keep you wanting more.
Early on you think you have the whole plot figured out, but Angela takes us in a wild ride with a few hidden twists you won’t see coming.
Frank a former Marine is also a bullwhip wielding Dom who likes it rough, and can fan a flame in your panties from the pages of your Kindle. I swear he is a magician too. He is also a brand new cop, and happens to find out the woman set to be his new sub, works for the same PD.
Alex, a female officer and almost reluctant sub, meets Frank at a friend’s house during his bullwhip foreplay for another couple. She is reluctant to call anyone her Master after a disastrous ex, and she lacks the submissive quality.
I truly enjoyed the journey Angela took me on, and I can’t wait to read more by this author.

This new book or series by Angela Knight is an excellent read. The only problem I have with the book is that I am really not all that interested in BDSM. I don't mind reading a bit about it in a book but there was a bit too much of it in the book for my taste or would have given a 5 star rating. The story is excellent and it was that part that kept me reading. Alexis Rogers and Frank Murphy meet up and get together in the BDSM Club. They are both deputy sheriff's and Frank is a Navy Seal that has gone on into law enforcement. He ends up in Alexis's precinct. Alexis has a stalker and keeps the reader very enthralled. Would recommend. Will have to see where the next book is going and if its a lot more of BDSM I will not be reading any more.

Well not really certain about this book. I liked parts of it and other parts I thought were dumb or strange. Ok I didn't read what the book was about when I clicked to enter the chance to win the book in goodreads giveaway. I wasn't expecting erotica-I haven't read that type of book in quite awhile. It was 'hot' in many of the scenes. But I'm not certain if I liked the book.

I received the book for free through Goodreads Giveaways.

If you’re looking for great BDSM, look no further. Angela Knight is one of the best. Her characters are amazing, you can’t help falling in love with them. And the suspense makes a great counter point for the hot sex scenes. And the best part? This is book one of a new series. Can’t wait to read more!

I'm glad I picked this one up. Characters were strong and sexy. I liked the way she introduced the antagonist right away, held the reader at the top of a precipice, as the suspense wound tighter and tighter. A great read!

Even though Jane's Warlord and the Mageverse titles have made me an A.K. fan for life, the heavy BDSM scenes and vernacular in Without Restraint didn't work for me. It is well-written so BDSM fiction fans should definitely give it a read.

3.5 stars.

The book is hot, but the mystery didn't was weak and made this a less enjoyable book.
