Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay (also spelt Saratchandra) (Bengali: শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়) was a legendary Bengali novelist from India. He was one of the most popular Bengali novelists of the early 20th century.

His childhood and youth were spent in dire poverty as his father, Motilal Chattopadhyay, was an idler and dreamer and gave little security to his five children. Saratchandra received very little formal education but inherited something valuable from his father—his imagination and love of literature.

He started writing in his early teens and two stories written then have survived—‘Korel’ and ‘Kashinath’. Saratchandra came to maturity at a time when the national movement was gaining momentum together with an awakening of social consciousness.

Much of his writing bears the mark of the resultant turbulence of society. A prolific writer, he found the novel an apt medium for depicting this and, in his hands, it became a powerful weapon of social and political reform.

Sensitive and daring, his novels captivated the hearts and minds of thousands of readers not only in Bengal but all over India.

Some of his best known novels are Palli Samaj (1916), Charitraheen (1917), Devdas (1917), Nishkriti (1917), Srikanta in four parts (1917, 1918, 1927 and 1933), Griha Daha (1920), Sesh Prasna (1929) and Sesher Parichay published posthumously (1939).

"My literary debt is not limited to my predecessors only. I'm forever indebted to the deprived, ordinary people who give this world everything they have and yet receive nothing in return, to the weak and oppressed people whose tears nobody bothers to notice and to the endlessly hassled, distressed (weighed down by life) and helpless people who don't even have a moment to think that: despite having everything, they have right to nothing. They made me start to speak. They inspired me to take up their case and plead for them. I have witnessed endless injustice to these people, unfair intolerable indiscriminate justice. It's true that springs do come to this world for some - full of beauty and wealth - with its sweet smelling breeze perfumed with newly bloomed flowers and spiced with cuckoo's song, but such good things remained well outside the sphere where my sight remained imprisoned. This poverty abounds in my writings."

এ বই পড়ে আনন্দে নেচেছি ঠিক আছে , কিন্তু একইসাথে কেঁদেছিলামও বৈকি।

Bipradas is my first foray into classic Indian Literature; and boy! What a journey it has been.

Set in the year 1935, in a rural backdrop of Balrampur. Bipradas is a story of the family life of Bipradas, being ingrained with the Indian traditional customs, observed in an orthodox Hindu family. It is a tale of how Indian and Modern cultures collide.

Bipradas being the protagonist is the charismatic and benevolent character and is Zamindar (Landlord) of Balrampur. He is a man with high principles and values, from which he never wavers off. And holds high regards for Justice and truth. He is the key force behind the family and family Business, he is very dear to his stepmother.

Bandana, Cousin sister of Bipradas’s wife Sati is a well-educated girl. Who does not believe in following ancient Hindu culture and is highly influenced by Western Culture, and is taken by the charismatic personality of Bipradas.

While Dwijdas is an impulsive extremist and eccentric free bird, who doesn’t believe setting his roots in one place. But fate it seems to have other plans for him.

What I liked about the Book.
Language is very easy to understand. Author has synced the characters of the book so well that when you read it’s like you are part of that book. The beauty of the book is its amalgamation of Cultures, values and different characters, all put into a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Last few chapters were tearjerkers.

What I didn’t like about the book.
Though this is my personal but Bandana talked too much for my liking though.

His writing matured at a time when the national movement was gaining momentum together with an awakening of social consciousness. The novelist in the role of a social reformer, with the power of his pen, brings to surface the social problems, which are the reasons behind the political oppression. Born in a rural family Sarat Chandra was familiar with the conventions followed in an orthodox Brahmin family. The political disturbances, which influenced the youngsters of Bengal, were also the theme of his novels. Sensitive and daring, his novels captivated the hearts and minds of innumerable readers both in Bengal and the rest of India. His best-known novels include Palli Samaj (1916), Choritrohin (1917), Devdas (1917), Nishkriti (1917), Srikanta (1917), Datta (1918), Griha Daha (1920) and Sesh Prashna (1929). Many of his stories were adapted for well-crafted and popular films in Bengali and Hindi languages for many years, extending even to the 21st century. He remains the most popular, most translated, most adapted and the most plagiarized Indian author of all time.

বিপ্রদাস : কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র, তাকে ঘিরেই কাহিনী এগিয়েছে। বমরামপুর জমিদার বাড়ির বড় ছেলে। প্রজাদের স্বার্থরক্ষা নিয়ে ভাবেন। বৈমাত্রীয় মা, ভাই স্ত্রীকে নিয়ে পরিবার। পাড়াগায়ের মত জায়গাতেও তার রয়েছে বিশাল লাইব্রেরী। দায়িত্ববান, কর্তব্যনিষ্ঠ এক ব্যক্তি। উপন্যাসের শেষে তাকে সর্বশান্ত হতে দেখা যায়।

দ্বিজদাস : পুরো উপন্যাস জুড়ে তার ভূমিকা বিপ্রদাসের চেয়েও জোড়ালো মনে হয়েছে (একান্ত ব্যক্তিগত অভিমত)। স্বদেশী করেন। মানতে পারেন না যে টাকা নিজে আয় করেন নি সে টাকাতে পায়ের উপর পা তুলে জীবন পার করে দেবেন। জমিদারী নিয়ে কোন মাথাব্যথা নেই।

সতী : বিপ্রদাসের স্ত্রী। যে যুগে স্বামী পছন্দ অধিকার ছিল না সে যুগে তার বিয়ে হয়েছিল। সাধারণ গ্রামীণ বধূ। কেউ অন্যায় করে বসলেও প্রতিবাদ করার সাহস পান না। অকালে মারা যান।

দয়াময়ী : বিপ্রদাস ও দ্বিজদাসের মা। ধর্মকর্মে দিন কাটান। গোড়া হিন্দু, ছোঁয়াছুঁয়ি এড়িয়ে চলেন।

বন্দনা : বোম্বাইয়ে থাকেন। সতীর কাকাতো বোন। বিলেতে যাবার কথা ছিল। প্রতিবাদী ধরণের চরিত্র। সে যুগের নারীদের থেকে অনেকখানি এগিয়ে থাকা ব্যক্তিত্ব। পরবর্তিতে দ্বিজদাসের স্ত্রী।

বইখানে পড়তে গিয়ে প্রথম বারের মত গুগোল প্লে স্টোর থেকে বই পড়ার সৌভাগ্য হল। প্লে স্টোরের বই পিডিএফের চেয়ে চোখে কম প্রেসার দেয় মনে হল। সামাজিক উপন্যাসে এলার্জি থাকায় তেমন ভালো লাগে নি। যেহেতু এটা শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টপাধ্যায়ের বই আমার ইতং-বিতং কথায় বিভ্রান্ত হওয়ার মানে হয় না। অবশ্যই পড়া যায়, ভালো লাগবে!

A translated novel by Sukhendu Ray. The book is set up in Balrampur depicting life of Bipradas. He was a well behaved man with principles and values belonging to an orthodox family.
Sati was his wife.His cousion Bandana,visited them. She was a good character of the story who was influenced by Western culture.
Bipradas believes and Bandana's ideology clashed almost out at every point.

Soon, she bonds with the family and when a tragedy hits them she stood by them. Bipradas leaves with his wife Sati and his son.

The story is a bit different in terms of morals, believes and superstitions.

বিপ্রদাস, বলরামপুরের জমিদার দয়াময়ীর সৎ ছেলে। এই বিপ্রদাসকে কেন্দ্র করেই উপন্যাস। মাতৃভক্তি, ধর্মভক্তি, দায়িত্ব আর কর্তব্যনিষ্ঠা তার অসাধারণ। দয়াময়ীর বিরাট জমিদারী সে-ই সামলায়। আছে দয়াময়ীর আপন ছেলে দ্বিজুদাস। সারাক্ষণ প্রজাদের স্বার্থ নিয়ে মিছিল মিটিং করতে থাকে। মা ও দাদার অবাধ্য না হলেও বৌদিদির সে সবচেয়ে বড় ভক্ত। মা দাদা থেকেও সতী বৌদিদিকে সে বেশি মান্য করে। আরেক প্রধান চরিত্র আছে বন্দনা। সতীর পিসতুতো বোন বন্দনা। খোদ দয়াময়ীর ব্যাপারে তেমন কিছু মনে হয় নি। স্বাধারণ এর বাইরের দশজনের মধ্যে একজন মনে হয়েছে। প্রথম কিছুটা ভূমিকা শেষে কাহিনী শুরু হয় দয়াময়ীর বাড়িতে বন্দনার বেড়াতে যাওয়া নিয়ে। দয়াময়ী পরিবার গোড়া হিন্দু পরিবার। ছোঁয়াছুঁয়ি মেনে চলেন। তাই বন্দনা যখন তাকে প্রণাম করতে যায় তখন তিনি একটু সরে দাড়ান। ব্যাপারটা বন্দনার গায়ে লাগে, তারচেয়েও বেশি গায়ে লাগে যখন সে দেখে তার বাবাকে একলা খেতে দেওয়া হয়েছে। সে রাগ করে থাকার আমন্ত্রণ বাদ দিয়ে বিকেলের ট্রেনে চলে যেতে চায়। তারপর তাদের স্টেশনে গমন, ট্রেনে মাতালদের খপ্পরে পড়ে বিপ্রদাসের সাথে যাওয়া, কলকাতায় বিপ্রদাসের বাড়িতে উ��া, কথায় কথায় ছোঁয়াছুঁয়ি নিয়ে বিপ্রদাসের প্রতি বন্দনার প্রচ্ছন্ন কটাক্ষ, মায়ের পক্ষে বিপ্রদাসের সাফাই, কলকাতার বাড়িতে বন্দনার সেবার বহর, বন্দনাকে দ্বিজদাসের বউ করার ইচ্ছা, অতিশয় আদর, সে ইচ্ছার ভাঙন। বিভিন্ন রাগ অভিমান, দুর্ঘটনা, বিপ্রদাসের হটাৎ অসুস্থ হওয়া, বন্দনার মনের পরিবর্তন, অসুস্থ বিপ্রদাসের অকুন্ঠ সেবা, কাহিনীর শেষে বিপ্রদাসের সর্বস্বান্ত হওয়া, দ্বিজদাসের মায়ের মত বৌদিদির মৃত্যু, বন্দনার নিজের দেশে চলে যাওয়া, এবং পুনরায় বলরামপুরে ফিরে আসা। তারপর দয়াময়ী ও বিপ্রদাসের একসাথে কৈলাস ভ্রমণ ও দ্বিজদাসের সাথে বন্দনার শুভবিবাহ একই সাথে কাহিনীর হ্যাপি ও স্যাড এন্ডিং এনে দিয়েছে।

শরৎচন্দ্র একজন অসাধারণ কথাসাহিত্যিক। বইয়ের উপর তার নাম না থাকলেও একজন নিয়মিত পাঠক তার বই চিনতে কখনো ভুল করবে না। তিনি যেভাবে ঘটনাক্রম তুলে ধরেন, মানুষের মনের অভিব্যক্তিগুলো সুন্দর করে ফুটিয়ে তুলেন তাতে তার জুড়ি মেলা ভার। বিপ্রদাস তার লেখা আরেক অসাধারণ উপন্যাস। তবে আমার ফেভারিট হয়ে থাকবে বন্দনা চরিত্রটি। মোটামুটি বলতে গেলে আবেগে পরে গেছি। :-D

এই বইটি নিয়ে অনেক অনেক কিছু বলতে ইছছে করছে কিন্তু নিজের আবেগ শামলে নিলাম। বইটির প্রত্যেকটা লাইন আমার কাছে প্রিয়।এখন পর্যন্ত মনে হয় আমার পড়া সবচেয়ে সেরা বাংলা বই। শেষে বলবো,বইটা আমি কলেজে দ্বাদশ শ্রেণীতে পরার সময় পরেছিলাম,তাই 'বন্দনা'আই আমার প্রথম প্রেম :)

Translated from Bengali, this book was such a treat. This book is rich in literature and would certainly entice readers who love translated work. Set during the time of 1935, Bipradas is the story of a family who have high morals and how their life revolves around various religious and caste systems.

The protagonist is Bipradas, the eldest son of the family who is highly respectable for looking out for others in need and also who never breaks his principles of being moral at all times. His younger brother, Dwijadas, has always been a free spirited kind who has the least interest in anything materialistic. When Bandana, cousin of Bipradas's wife enters their lives, clashes erupts between her educated opinions and Bipradas's conservational ideas.

As she spends more time with the family, she bonds with them and comes to admire Bipradas. As life would have it, his family faces turmoil when a tragedy takes place and Bipradas leaves the house with his wife and son. Dayamoyee, his mother then leans on Bandana who has always been her favourite. The Mukhujye family barely survives the blows when Bandana steps in and brings the family together.

Being considered as a casteless woman, Bandana wins the entire family's heart and faith in a very short time. The Mukhujye family who follow caste system, entrusted their hope in her hands to bring the family on their feet once again. This story is unique and talks about how things were done back during the 20th century in villages. The morals and conflicts that a family holds, the various superstitions that people always used to consider, everything is in this book.

I however felt that few parts were dragged quite a bit especially when it came down to Bandana's opinions. The story was interesting and made me fall in love with literature. The characters were complicated yet well executed.

কী এক অদ্ভুত কারণে আজও বিপ্রদাসকে আমি ভুলতে পারিনি।

যদি আমরা এক নিঃস্বার্থ আত্মার কথা ভাবি, যে নিজের সুখ-স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য ভুলে পরিবার, সমাজ আর কর্তব্যের পথে নিজেকে বিলিয়ে দেয়—তাহলে শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের ‘বিপ্রদাস’ উপন্যাসের প্রধান চরিত্রটিই যেন তার জীবন্ত উদাহরণ। এই উপন্যাস নিছক একটি গল্প নয়; এটি এক মানুষের আত্মপরিচয়ের সন্ধান, নীতি ও ত্যাগের এক নিঃশব্দ যাত্রা।
বিপ্রদাস আমাদের পাশের বাড়ির সেই মানুষটি, যাকে আমরা প্রায়শই বুঝতে পারি না। পরিবারের প্রতি তার দায়বদ্ধতা, ভাইয়ের প্রতি নিঃস্বার্থ ভালোবাসা আর নিজের আনন্দ বিসর্জন দিয়ে অন্যদের সুখী করার প্রচেষ্টা—এসব হয়তো আজকের বাস্তবতার সঙ্গে ঠিক মানানসই নয়, কিন্তু সেটাই তাকে অনন্য করে তুলেছে। উপন্যাসের শুরু থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত বিপ্রদাসের মধ্যে এক নিঃশব্দ সংগ্রাম চলতে থাকে; সমাজের কঠোর নিয়ম আর মায়ার বাঁধনে বন্দি হয়ে তার আদর্শ যেন বারবার পরীক্ষার মুখোমুখি হয়।

উপন্যাসটি পড়তে গিয়ে মনে হয়, বিপ্রদাস যেন দুই যুগের সন্ধিক্ষণে দাঁড়িয়ে। একদিকে আধুনিক শিক্ষার প্রভাব, যেখানে যুক্তি আর ব্যক্তিস্বাধীনতার গুরুত্ব, অন্যদিকে সমাজের পুরোনো প্রথা, যেখানে পারিবারিক বন্ধন, ধর্ম এবং কর্তব্য সবচেয়ে বড়। বিপ্রদাস এই দুইয়ের ��াঝখানে দাঁড়িয়ে নিজের অস্তিত্ব খুঁজে ফিরছেন। আজকের যুগেও আমরা একই সমস্যার সম্মুখীন—আধুনিক জীবনের চাপে আমাদের মূল্যবোধ টিকে থাকার জন্য লড়াই করছে।

শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের লেখায় এমন এক সহজ-সরল গদ্য আছে, যা পড়তে গিয়ে মনে হয় যেন জীবনের কথা শুনছি। প্রতিটি সংলাপ, প্রতিটি অনুভূতি এত জীবন্ত যে মনে হয়, আমরাই এই গল্পের অংশ। চরিত্রগুলোও ঠিক আমাদের চারপাশের মানুষের মতো—পরিবারের প্রত্যাশা, সমাজের চোখ রাঙানি আর নিজের স্বপ্নের মধ্যে ভারসাম্য রাখার চেষ্টা করে চলেছে।

উপন্যাসের শেষে যখন বিপ্রদাসের নিঃস্ব অবস্থার চিত্র ফুটে ওঠে, তখন এক অদ্ভুত শূন্যতা তৈরি হয়। মনে হয়, তার জীবন কি সত্যিই মূল্যহীন ছিল? নাকি আত্মত্যাগই তার সবচেয়ে বড় সম্পদ? এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর খুঁজতে গিয়ে আমরা আমাদের নিজেদের জীবনকেও একবার নতুন করে ভাবতে বাধ্য হই।

যদি কখনো মনে হয়, জীবনের সত্যিকারের অর্থ খুঁজে পেতে চাই, তাহলে ‘বিপ্রদাস’ পড়া উচিত। এটি শুধু গল্প নয়, বরং মানবিকতা, ত্যাগ আর আত্মপরিচয়ের এক চিরন্তন আখ্যান। বিপ্রদাসের জীবনের সঙ্গে আমাদের অনেক কিছু মিল খুঁজে পাবো—হয়তো এই কারণেই এই উপন্যাস এত timeless।
এই উপন্যাস শেষ করে মনে হবে, সমাজের দৃষ্টিতে হয়তো সব ত্যাগ অর্থহীন মনে হয়, কিন্তু সত্যিকারের মহত্ত্ব কোনো বাহ্যিক স্বীকৃতির অপেক্ষা রাখে না।

বিপ্রদাস,দ্বিজদাস,বন্দনা,সতী এবং দয়াময়ী — এই পাঁচটি চরিত্র একে ওপর থেকে ভিন্ন হয়েও যখন একই রঙের ছাঁচে নির্দিষ্ট তুলির দ্বারা আমার মনে একটি ছবি অঙ্কন করেছে তা চিরজীবন অক্ষুন্ন হয়ে থাকবে।
