Rules of Seduction

Rate this book
The first rule of seduction is: don’t fall in love.

Fresh out of college, Dani Young heads for the LA sun to chase her dream of becoming a screenwriter-director. So when her former BFF turned actress Elise offers Dani the opportunity to work on the hit teen show Vamp Camp, Dani can’t refuse, even if it comes at a price: Elise wants Dani to seduce her boyfriend, Vamp Camp superstar Tate Lawrence. Turns out Elise has some major trust issues, and needs Dani to test Tate’s faith. The only rule: don’t fall in love with him.

Sure, Dani doesn’t mind occasionally glimpsing Tate’s megawatt smile…or accidentally-on-purpose brushing up against his perfect torso…but she’s no fool. There’s no way she’d ever fall for a shallow celebrity and no way one would fall for her, a lanky movie nerd.

But amidst vampire-crazed fans, a conniving fellow intern, and a devilishly handsome showrunner, Dani feels like all the rules she used to know have disappeared, except for one: Love doesn’t play by the rules.

Part The Devil Wears Prada, part How To Lose a Guy in Ten Days, this story of friendship and romance is sure to appeal to fans of Stephanie Perkins, Jennifer E. Smith, and Anna Todd.

In fourth grade, Jenna put her classmates into an essay about fire safety, and they laughed the entire time she read it aloud. Since then, she's been writing with the sole purpose to entertain other people. Fire safety, however, fell to the wayside when she accidentally set her grandmother's bathroom on fire when she was 12.

In 2010, she moved from Indiana to Los Angeles to intern at E!, and for the past three years she's been a writer/editor/reporter/pop culture gatekeeper at E! Online. She loves to weave her behind-the-scenes knowledge of the entertainment industry into her stories, and she still has many secrets to tell.

A Midwest girl who prefers Southern California weather, Jenna loves the Indianapolis Colts, saving Hyrule and training for her backup dream career: deciding what goes into the baskets on Food Network's Chopped. She currently resides in LA with her nerdy, handsome boyfriend Kyle and their two fluffier-than-normal cats, Glenn and Zelda.

In Rules of Seduction, we meet Dani Young… newly graduated and heading to LA to work with her dream company as a screenwriter. But upon her arrival, she quickly learns her dream job is no more, the Independent Film company has closed up shop and she’s stuck with no job and no prospects because she also quickly learns that in LA it’s all about who you know.

Drowning her sorrows in ice cream, she runs into a high school friend who headed to LA, and Elise is just the friend she needs in this city. While catching up, Elise ends up getting Dani a job on a hit teen show, but it comes at a price. Elise wants Dani to seduce her sexy, superstar boyfriend Tate to make sure he’s being faithful to her.

Sounds easy enough, but what Dani doesn’t account for is dealing with a ruthless fellow intern, a showrunner who makes her feel like they just might have a future, and a not so shallow celebrity she can’t stop thinking about.
When you say a book is for fans of Stephanie Perkins, you’ve almost always immediately got my attention, that said, you also set very high expectations for me as well.

Unfortunately, while this was a fun and entertaining read, it didn’t really live up to Stephanie Perkins levels of character development and swoon for me.

First, Dani… I really liked her, but I felt like for someone who was headed to LA and who should have known the business, she seemed somewhat naïve. What I did like was her obsessive list making, it was a cute addition to her character and as a bit of a list maker myself, it really made her that much more relatable. Tate, too, was very relatable and easy to like. I thought he was incredibly sweet and kind and definitely not your typical Hollywood persona.
Secondary characters here, especially Brit, were interesting and a nice way to round out the cast. I really enjoyed her Southern charm and the way she was trying to fit into the vegan LA lifestyle and if this becomes a series, it would be interesting to get her story!

Overall, the story is an interesting glimpse into the behind the scenes workings of Hollywood… whether it’s correct or not, it was fun to follow along, and I enjoyed Mullins writing.

If you’re looking for a funny, sweet new adult romance has the perfect balance of drama and comedy… a story about the inner workings Hollywood, definitely grab this one as soon as you can.

RULES OF SEDUCTION is a super quick and thoroughly entertaining read. It’s one of those stories that you know from the outset will be fun and sweet and totally devourable and will involve plots and schemes that will backfire in ways that will either be hilarious or disastrous or a little bit of both. And with the backdrop of Los Angeles, a hot tv series featuring an even hotter leading male actor, a jealous girlfriend, a sexy guy who runs the show, a leading lady with a nightmare personality, a girl hoping to make a comeback after her dreams are crushed, and a set of rules for every occasion, it is a story that will be absolutely unputdownable.

When Danika Young left for Los Angeles she hadn’t even entertained the possibility that things could go wrong. She had the perfect job lined up – her dream job – and she was working on a screenplay she was sure would impress all the right people. So when things fell through, on her very first day, as shocked as she was, there was no way she could go home.

But if she hadn’t run into Elise, her childhood friend, she would have had to. Without any money or connections, there’s no way she could have stayed. And while working on a tv show wasn’t her dream, especially a hit series with a name like Vamp Camp, she was grateful for the opportunity. She just wished the favor she was asked to do in exchange didn’t involve attempting to seduce Elise’s boyfriend.

Jenna Mullins delivers a story that is more than just a guilty pleasure read. It is clever and well-written with an array of appealing characters. It challenges stereotypes. It touches on themes of trust, insecurity, self-worth and self-esteem, self-discovery, deception and betrayal. It adds humor. And it reveals a number of rules that are both on point and laugh out loud funny.

Told in the first person, the author gives readers more of a chance to connect with Dani. Her main character isn’t someone who is immediately, or always, likable. But she is someone who changes and grows as the story progresses. And she is surrounded by characters who are a mix of likable, charming, insecure, arrogant, driven, damaged, redeemable, making for an interesting and engaging read.

For those looking for a light and flirty one-sit read with a few deeper notes that lets them escape into the sometimes glamorous but always fascinating world of Hollywood celebrity, RULES OF SEDUCTION is a must. It promises to make you laugh, swoon, think, and maybe even fall in love.

Original GR comments:
Loved it. Super quick, sweet, romantic and fun read. Devoured it in a night. Loved all the characters and not just Dani and Tate. Review TK but so glad to have been introduced to this book. Look forward to reading more by this author.

The cover of Rules of Seduction is what first caught my attention. I was completely drawn to this book and wanted to know everything about it. Once I read the synopsis and saw what it was about I knew I wanted to read this book. It ended up being exactly like I thought it would be.

Dani picks up her life and decides to relocate to LA when the opportunity to work for a producer she’s been coveting arises. But as soon as she arrives and sees the company she was going to be working for has folded and she’s jobless, she starts to rethink her decision. No job, no car, and no friends, Dani sets off to build her new life. But is it too much for her to take on?

I liked that Dani immediately meets up with a former BFF of hers as it gave her someone to help with this venture she was on… but it honestly seemed a little too convenient. She just happened to run into her at the very first place she goes to, on her very first day in LA. AND her BFF Elise just happens to have the perfect job for her now jobless friend. I wish life was that easy, but it rarely works that way. So I thought this all felt a little too convenient to be realistic.

The friendship Tate and Dani built throughout this story was so strong and sweet. I have many guy friends myself, and I love seeing such strong friendships between a guy and a girl. View Spoiler » I loved Tate’s character in general. He came off as your stereotypical Hollywood star at first sight, but then we got a better glimpse into him, and he was so much more than that.

This story overall was very entertaining. It had my full attention throughout. I really enjoyed the story as a whole, despite the few issues I had with it. I was bothered a bit by how little knowledge Dani actually had in a field she had supposedly worked in and was very familiar with. But aside from this, this story had all the drama, comedy, and inner workings of the Hollywood scene that I was hoping for. If you’re a fan of books like this (like me!), you should definitely grab this one and give it a read.

Big thanks to The Studio, A Paper Lantern Lit imprint and NetGalley for an ARC copy for review.

Well... I must say that this book was nothing like I expected it to be. It was way better! A funny and charming story of a girl named Dani, who is trying to find her way in a new city, surviving at her new job as a behind the scenes intern on a popular tv show, and at the request of her friend spending time with star of show, Tate Lawrence. Not exactly how Dani had pictured her new life in Hollywood.

This book really had me laughing. The main character Dani was very witty and I loved her inner thoughts. She is young, but self reliant, and has the patience of a saint, especially when dealing with the stuck up jerks at her work. I wouldn't be able to it.

Then we have Tate, who is a Hollywood heartthrob. He is gorgeous, successful, with plenty of adoring female fans. Dani's first encounter with Tate was less than stellar. I found him arrogant and rude, but once he apologized and they got to know each other my opinion of him changed completely. He was really sweet and dedicated. Oh, and his love for cats is too cute.

The relationship between Dani and Tate is one that you'll root for. They are great together. I really liked Dani's roommate Brit, she was a great supportive friend to have. There were a couple characters who got on my nerves quite a bit, but by the end I warmed up to them. Overall this was an enjoyable book with a good ending.

Before I start my review, let me say this, do not judge this book by its title! The main character was not a vixen who was trying to become a seductress and sleep with as many men as possible. I promise, it wasn’t one of those deep, dark romance novels. Instead, it’s a light hearted New Adult book that was a very enjoyable read!

Meet Dani- she was a recent college graduate who has always had dreams of becoming a scriptwriter for Hollywood. Her passion and love for writing knows no bounds, and it is evident to everyone who knew her. Over the summer, she accepted an amazing internship opportunity, and arrived in Hollywood ready to work. The only problem? The business that she was supposed to work for went out of business, and Dani had no backup plan. Luckily for her, she had an unexpected reunion with one of her old friends, Elise, who got her another job in the industry. But Elise wanted something in return…she wanted Dani to flirt with her boyfriend and see whether he would stay loyal to her. With that plan in mind, what could ever go wrong?

I actually really enjoyed this book. For some reason, I’ve been in the mood for music/movie/reality themed books recently, and this hit the spot perfectly. There was a mixture of sweet and funny moments, yet also a couple of scenes that were dead serious. I thought that it flowed very well and provided a mixture of everything. Also, there was a well executed love triangle. Overall, Rules of Seduction was a very light and easy read.

I give it 4/5stars.

Danika Young moves from Illinois to chase her dreams but when her new job goes south, she gets a lucky break. In the moment when she begins to second guess coming out to L.A. she runs into her childhood best friend Elise. Elise also moved to pursue her dreams, not soon after moving she has a bad breakup. Now in a new relationship with a Hollywood heart-throb, she devises a plan for Dani to seduce her boyfriend, in exchange for getting Dani a job on Vamp Camp. Dani takes the offer, what harm could be done, right?!

I couldn't finish this book fast enough! I had to know what was going to happen next! What was most enjoyable was the authors ability to transport me into L.A. and witness the inner workings of a television set. I loved Jeanna's imagery, it was wonderful! The writing style was humorous and I could see these characters with that SoCal dialogue. Although I did enjoy the book, there were times when I felt the book hesitated at parts. Those parts are where I thought the book could have easily ended. Then again I am not the author and she tied the story in beautifully, after all. Perhaps this is just with my dying anticipation to figure out what would happen next between these three, Dani, Elise and Tate. I enjoyed all the characters especially Brit. She felt like the best-friend/roommate any girl would want especially when moving some place new. I don't know if there will be another installment but I will definitely read more by Jenna Mullins.

Jenna Mullins, thank you! I picked this novel simply because I liked the title and am delighted that I did. Dani and Tate are great together and it takes them a bit to actually become easy with one another since their first meeting went horribly wrong. Tate comes off as an arrogant twat but eventually shows his true colors which are a lot prettier. Dani is smart, witty, sarcastic, and good hearted. There are a few times in the story where I wanted to smack Elise, Dani's friend, and then smack Dani. The story also gave me a lot of laughs. The writing is pretty freaking awesome, the story and characters develop, and there's a much desired happy ending. I think Mullins created a golden piece of literature with this story.

A fresh, fascinating peek inside Hollywood...and all the delicious drama it entails. Fun, sexy, and so very addictive, Rules of Seduction has everything I crave in a book--charming characters, witty writing, shocking twists and turns, and a relatable heroine I can't help but root for. And did I mention the boys?? I can't wait to see what Mullins does next!

When I first read the synopsis of the Rules of Seduction by Jenna Mullins, I admit I was excited. It sounded fun, slightly goofy and the type of book that would have just the right amount of romance and fun without all the 'woe' you often see in other new adult books.

Initially it started off well and I really enjoyed the book. Dani is actually a quite fun character to read about, but as the book went on I didn't like how she became a little too 'yes' to everything even when it was going against her character. Her 'friends' and I use that word loosely with the exception of her room mate aren't really great friends. In fact one of them is such a using cow (Harsh I know), that every time there was an interaction between the 2 of them even when it should have been funny it grated me a little.

The romance aspect of this book wasn't great either, well the parts with Tate were - in fact Tate really saves this book. I would have probably given up if it wasn't for him. But the side lines of Dani finding herself and working in the industry just felt juvenile at times. If the book wasn't supposed to be humorous I (Again) may have given up.

The ending was ok, its sweet and worked. There's a climax in the story and that too worked with what happened before. I just had a few issues a long the way which was a shame as with a few minor changes this book would have been a 4 star book and not a 3.5.

If you like a light hearted new adult book with some romance and fun, then this is for you. It would make a great beach read as its actually quite easy going and there's not too much sadness either in it. I would have liked Dani to remain true to herself in the book more and not be such a GDB (General dogs body in case you didn't get the abbreviation) as it really did feel like she was walked all over at times by the other characters even when she shouldn't have been. 3.5 stars.

Rules For Enjoying This Book
1. Clear your calendar and avoid all interruptions (You'll thank me for this).
2. Read it. You can't enjoy it if you don't read it!
3. You might catch yourself wanting to slap some sense into the characters.. embrace it!
4. Love it.
5. Love it some more!

Dani "Danika" Young, fresh out of college, moves to LA to follow her dream of becoming a screenwriter-director.

She reaches LA, only to find the job she was promised gone with the wind. Feeling lost, she runs into Elise, her BFF from the fourth grade who moved to LA to be an actress. Elise gets her an intern position in the hit teen show Vamp Camp on the condition that she tries to seduce Elise's boyfriend, Tate Lawrence.

So much happens, and there were times where I wanted to sit Dani down and have a serious talk with her about accepting Elise's scheming! The plot turns out great though. I've really enjoyed reading it! And Jenna Mullin's writing is just awesome.. And you can see that she has a sense of humor from her writing.

Definite 5/5 for me. Can't recommend it enough

Rules of Seduction is about Dani Young, fresh out of the Midwest (Chicago) on her way to live her dreams in L.A. However, when Dani arrives in L.A. things are not exactly at all how she planned for them to be. In fact in seems like all of her well crafted plans and dreams are smashed into smithereens within the first day of her arrival. Lady Luck however must actually be shining down on Dani because she runs into an old friend who helps her get things back on the right path. Nothing is free, especially in L.A., even from friends, so the new opportunity has a few strings attached.

Dani has to seduce her friends megastar boyfriend Tate. The hard thing is, she must do this without being found out all while trying to make a name for herself in a cut throat business. Add in a few L.A. style characters, a failing t.v. show, and a fear of heights and you have a seemingly near impossible feat.

Rules of Seduction is a cute story. I didn't dislike it, I just didn't love it. There were some laugh out loud moments but also some eye roll moments. For me, the story was incredibly predictable. I felt like I have read this story before but with many different titles. Unfortunately, for me, it made this story a little boring and mundane.

Many thanks to the author for providing an ARC!

I love this book! It's the funniest I've read this year so far. Even though it's a little predictable, it makes total sense. I love these characters! Dani, Elise and Tate made lots of mistakes. It could be weird to say that one of the things I liked the most was how honest they are. But they are!! Even though they're wrong, they know exactly what they're doing and how bad this could get. It's really difficult when you don't want to hurt anyone.

My favorite parts are Dani's lists. Each one is better than the other! Definitely a must read!!!

ps: I didn't know this was originally a JB fanfic. I can imagine how happy the fans are to see it becoming a real book. This is so awesome! I'm happy for them, I'm happy for the author and I'm glad I could enjoy this story with you guys, even though I'm not part of your fandom. Thanks for sharing! :)

This was such a fun and lighthearted read! I read the book in one seating!

I've always loved stories about celebrities, falling for celebrities, etc and just basically Hollywood. It has a slight Disney feel to this book. I love her books of rules! They are adorable and witty! All the characters are so different from each other and I love how Mullins work that out.

I have a slight issue on Dani agreeing to her best friend's request. Because as soon as the topic came up, I smell trouble. And I know that Dani is quite naive but I wished she would've said no and stand her ground from the very beginning. But other than that, the book was very enjoyable and I was kinda sad to find that I finished the book faster than I intended to.

This was such a cute, fun, lighthearted, Hollywood-themed read. Fans of Stephanie Perkins will definitely dig this.

I pre-ordered this months ago, cause the blurb made it sound good, and had honestly forgot till I opened my kindle one morning! This was, from start to finish, a thoroughly delightful book! I loved that the main character didn't come to Hollywood for normal reasons - it was refreshing. The whole supporting set of characters are really well written and developed - I can totally imagine all of them as I was reading! As I got to the end, all I wanted was another book with this cast of characters, which I take as a perfect sign!

This was a cute story. I enjoyed Dani and her journey navigating Hollywood in hopes that she'd be able to fulfill her dream of directing her screenplay. Add to that, her budding relationship with TV bad boy, Tate Lawrence, and you had the perfect mixture of fun, humor and romance.

For anyone that enjoys a fun read where you can loose yourself for a few hours without being overwrought, RULES OF SEDUCTION is definitely one to think about picking up.

The only thing that was on my mind after I finished this book was that I WANT MORE. I NEED MORE OF DANI AND TATE AND EVERYONE ELSE. This book was honestly so great! Fans of Kasie West will definitely enjoy this. Dani & Tate's relationship reminded me a lot of Caymen and Xander's relationship in THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US by Kasie West! I enjoyed the chemistry and relationship between Dani & Tate SO SO much. I seriously need more of them!!!! PLEASE WRITE MORE JENNA MULLINS.

'Rules of Seduction' is a fun and light-hearted New Adult contemporary romance that takes place in Los Angeles. The story follows our main character - Dani Young - as she moves to LA after graduating college, in the hopes of pursuing her dream of becoming a screenwriter/director. The opportunity of a lifetime appears out of seemingly nowhere - Dani's ex-BFF Elise, who just happens to be an actress on a hit TV show, offers Dani a job on the show. There's just one catch to this deal - Dani has to seduce Elise's boyfriend, the star of the show Tate Lawrence. Apparently Elise has some trust issues and wants to see if her boyfriend will take the bait. Knowing that another opportunity like this will probably never happen again - Dani agrees. Elise gives her one rule: Don't fall in love with Tate. Dani isn't concerned about this though - she's there to work and gain experience, not fall in love with a TV star. And there's no way that a guy like Tate would ever be interested in a girl like Dani - right?

This was a really fun and fast read for me. I was swept up into Dani's world right from the start of the book. It's told from Dani's point of view - first person - which is my favorite style. We get to know the narrator - usually the main character - on such a deeper level than any other POV. With this book, we get to know all about Dani - her hopes, dreams, fears, memories, and hilarious inner dialogue. By the time the book was finished, I felt as if I knew Dani on a personal level - like she was my best friend and was telling me the story herself. Her witty inner thoughts and sarcasm throughout the book were one of my favorite things about the novel. I snickered or laughed out loud at least once per page (or so it seemed). Granted, the entire story isn't all happy and funny, but the way Dani tells it and the way that it's broken down - past, present, etc. - made me love her character all the more.

To be honest, the plot was pretty obvious - just from reading the description. You know exactly what's going to happen - how the hot TV star and the nerdy movie intern end up falling for each other, despite the odds and obstacles in their way. It's nothing new - especially when it comes to chick flicks and most romance novels. It's the story in between that we get caught up in - and I love how the author wrote that part of the book. I adored watching Dani take the job at the TV show, meeting Tate and getting to know him - while he obviously gets to know her - and seeing them fall for each other. It's ridiculously romantic and kinda cheesy, but we all need that sometimes - at least I do. Like I said, the plot is completely obvious just from reading the description; but the story itself and the way that the author writes it makes this book stand out for me. Honestly, if the book wasn't written so well, I would have stopped reading it within a few pages. That's how much the writing style means to me - it can seriously make or break a book. In this case, it definitely made it - and then some. I can't say much more without repeating myself. Here's the bottom line: You know exactly what you're getting into when you open the book. The plot could be taken from any number of chick flicks or romances and it's obvious how it's going to end. It's what is between those two points - beginning and ending - that makes it so much fun to read. Like I said - Dani's character is realistic and incredibly easy to connect with. You'll be rooting for her during the whole book - especially when it comes to the romance parts with Tate. Some readers probably won't like this book due to the predictability - but others, like myself, will look past the corny story line and see the novel for what it really is - a love story written with such obvious talent and humor. That's what sold the book for me and I hope that you'll at least give it a shot - even if it's not your usual genre of choice. I very highly recommend it for readers who love contemporary romances - especially New Adult, as well as those looking for a masterfully written story with a witty heroine. This is a perfect summer read!

Actual rating: 3.5/5

Jenna’s debut novel, Rules of Seduction, is a quick and fun read. The story follows Dani who’s graduated from college and moved to LA for a dream internship that turns out to be nonexistent anymore because Hollywood. Never fear though, through a couple chance connections Dani is able to get a job as an intern on the popular teen vampire show Vamp Camp. Dani’s faced with a lot of issues from the moment she sets foot in LA and they stay with her as she starts work. These problems that come up are ones she never thought she had to deal with because she just came to LA to write for movies. Dani soon has an epiphany and realizes that maybe she’s not living and writing how she wants to.

First thing’s first, when I say this is a fun read, I mean it wholeheartedly. There’s a lot of quirks about Dani that make her very likeable. For instance, her need to make lists about every single thing that she needs to overcome (see example below in Favorite Quote).

“Well, I don’t think I’m obsessed with rules as much as I’m obsessed with deciding when it’s worth breaking the rules.” -99% through eARC

There’s a lot of sarcasm and crassness to Dani that some people might not like but I do because I feel like that’s how I am sometimes. Also, her banter with Tate is on point.

Speaking of Tate, ah Tate. He’s such a wonderful character. He’s an actor on the show and is made out by the media to be a player and bad boy, but as Dani forms a friendship with him she learns the truth about who Tate really is and Tate is amazing. He has so many likeable qualities and some that are very unexpected.

The other characters are pretty stereotypical Hollywood/LA people. You’ve got the catty actors, actresses, and other people in the business. We do however get BFF-extraordinaire in the form of Dani’s roommate Brit. Brit is one of the good-hearted people who cares for Dani even before she knows her.

One downside of the book is the stupidity that Dani gets herself into by agreeing to spy on her friend’s boyfriend by seducing him and testing his faithfulness. I get that Dani agreed to it to help her friend but I wish she would’ve realized what a bad idea it was sooner than when she did. Of course if she had, we wouldn’t have had not only near as much drama, but we wouldn’t have really had a story.

I think by far my favorite part of Rules of Seduction is how it illustrates the truth of Hollywood and LA. It shows how people can be so mean and cruel to get what they want. Dani experiences so much of this firsthand. The fact that it’s not a typical book where the girl goes to Hollywood and all of her dreams come true without a hitch is amazingly refreshing.

Favorite Quote:
If you don’t want anyone to talk to you (and you never do) keep headphones in and your face in a book as soon as you sit down. Eye contact is an open invitation for other people to talk to you. Shut that down. -2% through eARC

Review in Review:
If you’re looking for a quick and fun new adult read that doesn’t have a lot–if any–explicit content, then Rules of Seduction is for you. There were some small issues that I had that would’ve bumped my rating up to 4 out of 5 stars, but overall I liked it. This books basically teaches you to never trust anyone in LA and the way that it does so is light, witty, and entertaining.

When I picked up this book, I thought it was YA. I don't know why I thought that--I guess for some reason, I thought that all books published by Paper Lantern Lit were Young Adult. When I started reading, I thought this book was New Adult. But I quickly figured out that this isn't really new adult. It's adult, just without sex. Or kissing.

Sassy Dani Young moves from the cold to sunny Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a screenwriter. Always one to make lists of rules for everything, Dani's got an amazing job working for one of her most respected directors as well as an ideal apartment waiting for her when she steps off the plane. Unfortunately, things don't go at all to plan when she arrives at work a day early to find that the entire organization has been shut down, and she's out of a job. Luckily, her new roommate is very understanding and agrees to let her stay since she knows she'll find work soon.

Devastated and feeling the depths of despair, Dani heads out for ice cream and runs into her childhood friend, Elise, who moved out to LA a few years back for her modeling and acting career. Elise has a proposition for her. She'll get her a job working on a hit TV show in exchange for her attempting to seduce Elise's superstar boyfriend to see if he can be trusted. It's not completely insane--Elise was burned by her high school sweetheart, and she's not sure she can trust Tate since he's crazy hot and crazy famous.

You know what happens while Dani's trying to do her job and gets to know Tate. Will she throw out all her rules and follow her heart?

The idea for this story was amazing, and I loved experiencing Dani's snarky, fun attitude coming off the page. She was witty and imaginative, and just outright entertaining. Though I thought Dani was unrealistic and juvenile, I did enjoy getting to see what goes on behind the scenes in Hollywood.

I also really liked Tate Lawrence and thought he was a lot of fun, too. He was sweet and a great guy.

But this...
Part The Devil Wears Prada, part How To Lose a Guy in Ten Days, this story of friendship and romance is sure to appeal to fans of Stephanie Perkins, Jennifer E. Smith, and Anna Todd.

...was not the book I read. Sure, Dani was cute and I liked Tate well enough. I thought quirky roommate Brit was the perfect amount of Southern charm and BFF material, and I totally wouldn't mind seeing her get her own book. But, there was nothing Stephanie Perkins or Jennifer E. Smith-esque to me about this book. Just knowing that the summary compared Rules of Seduction to these faves, I was so excited to read. But I was totally let down when it failed to deliver the characters and storyline that I had built up my hopes for.

If you're looking for a fun summer read with a somewhat naive heroine and a superstar love interest, then check out Rules for Seduction by debut author Jenna Mullins.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley. This did not affect my review.

When Dani moves to LA, she experiences a huge blow. The indie studio she moved to the city for has closed its doors without letting her know, and she becomes a jobless filmmaker in her first few hours in the city of angels. Luckily, her new roommate Brit is kind of awesome, and cheers her up and accepts her even though she can’t yet pay the rent. Her job situation turns around quickly though, as Dani runs into her old friend Elise, who gives her a proposition: seduce my boyfriend and I’ll get you a job.

First off, Dani doesn’t seem the type to take up this offer, but she accepts anyways. She’s so desperate for a job, even at the cheesy teen show Vamp Camp, that she’s willing to do something ridiculous to get it. Because she honestly doesn’t think Elise’s boyfriend is going to fall for her schemes. Why would an up-and-coming actor be interested in a film nerd like her?

Rules of Seduction isn’t very surprising, it follows the path you’d expect it to, but the story is well paced and the characters are all very interesting. Dani is a little vain when she comes to LA, sticking her nose up at the show Vamp Camp and its stars. One of whom is Elise’s boyfriend Tate. Elise is probably the shallowest character here, asking her supposedly dear friend to get her boyfriend to cheat on her. So, from the start I wasn’t invested in her relationship with Tate and didn’t mind at all when he and Dani grew closer. And they do seem to have a lot in common and were good friends, so I did believe in the relationship and chemistry despite one of them being famous and the other a “nobody.” And for being famous, Tate was entirely likable.

Dani’s roommate Brit is an awesome character, she’s a vegan chef and a lesbian, which was a nice mix to the cast. She’s also very new agey, which runs against Dani’s personality and creates an odd couple environment. But I really liked the dynamic and wish there was more about these two!

Dani grows a bit over the course of the story, especially when it comes to her superiority complex about making movies. When she first gets to LA she has a script idea that I thought was truly contrary to her “taste” and was cringing every time she bemoaned about not being able to work on it. One of the most satisfactory parts of the book was when Dani admits her story idea was pretentious and utter crap. I loved how we could see her mature over the course of the story.

Overall, this was a fast and fun romance with a quirky setting. The behind the scenes of the tv industry was not a setting I’d read before, and it was enjoyable to see the tension and drama unfold both personally and professionally!

Rules of Seduction was a cute and light-hearted read. Dani is going to Los Angeles with big dreams of one day being the next big thing in Hollywood as far as being a director or a screenwriter goes but when she gets there the job she had lined up no longer exists, luckily she bumps into a childhood friend who moved out to Hollywood to try and become a star also and who just happens to be dating Tate the star of Vamp Camp which is a popular TV show. Elise hooks Dani up as an intern on the set of Vamp Camp but not without wanting something in return. Dani has to seduce Tate to test his loyalty to Elise.

I found the book to be very predictable, it was pretty obvious how things would play out but that didn't take away from my enjoyment of reading it. Dani was hilarious, the things that came out of her mouth and her thought process is what really kept me reading. I loved the different sets of lists of rules Dani always made, some were just downright funny and there were even a few rules that I if I kept lists like hers I would add to mine.

Tate was such a sweet guy which is why the whole time I felt so bad for him with the way he was being played by Elise and even Dani (although Dani did feel like utter crap the whole time while playing the seductress). Tate was more than what meets the eye and Dani slowly figured that out as they grew to become very close friends.

Besides the romance there is more to the book, we also see Dani's world crashing in on her when she realizes Hollywood is not everything it's cracked out to be and the people are really self-centered, the only bright light in her world is Tate but even she knows once he learns the truth that will be over and then there was her roommate Brit who was what a true friend really is...not like Elise that girl was just horrible and I hated how Dani let her talk her into a situation she clearly was uncomfortable in.

The ending was sweet, I just expected Tate to give Dani a bit more of a hard time because it seriously was messed up what she was doing. Overall though I laughed quite a bit and I had fun seeing there friendship blossom and Dani trying to seduce him when she didn't have a clue on what the hell she was doing.

Rules of Seduction is an adorable new adult novel about the inner workings of Hollywood and what it takes to make it in the business. With a fun cast of characters and an awkwardly cute romance, it’s a quick read for contemporary fans.

Dani is both the best thing about Rules of Seduction and the worst. She’s an adorably awkward girl who is so easy to relate to but she is also extremely naive. She’s on her own for the first time and she’s just moved to LA. She wants to be some big time director of indie films but to get there she has to start at the bottom. People tend to walk all over her and things I could see coming from a mile away came as a surprise to her. I loved her personality though. She was such a nerd and she was so clueless when it came to guys, especially Tate. Speaking of, Tate was so much more than I expected. He was not the typical Hollywood bad boy player. He had a great heart and he was quite a nerd too, deep down. He and Dani brought out the best in each other.

The secondary characters really helped tie things together too. Dani’s roommate, Brit, was a totally unique person. She had a mind of her own and she did what she wanted. She was good to Dani through everything, even when she knew Dani was doing something totally dumb. Elise, Tate’s girlfriend and Dani’s friend from back home, was not all that great but I feel like I just didn’t see enough of her to really come to like her.

The story was really fun. I have never really been all that interested in famous people or the Hollywood industry but Jenna Mullins did a great job of making it fun and easy to understand. The base of the story was definitely a romance but there was enough other stuff going on that it didn’t feel completely devoted to the romance. The details surrounding Dani’s job and her dreams were really intricate and made for a very interesting look at Hollywood.

Overall, I was definitely impressed with Jenna Mullins’ debut novel. I look forward to reading more from her and I wouldn’t complain if Tate and Dani made an appearance in future novels.

Dani Young has just graduated college and is ready to start her screenwriting/directing career in Los Angeles. Her very first day in the City of Angels doesn't go as planned, but she reunites with her childhood best friend, Elise, who snags Dani a job on the set of Vamp Camp--a popular teen show where Elise's boyfriend (Tate Lawrence) just happens to be the star. Burned from a past relationship, Elise asks Dani to seduce Tate because she wants to be sure that he's a loyal boyfriend even when she's not around. Dani sees no harm in helping a friend out seeing as she has no intention of ever falling for a shallow and egotistical celebrity. However, Tate surprises her and she has no idea how to derail their growing friendship.

This is written as a flashback--the main character, Dani, is getting her hair and makeup done and begins telling the story of how disastrous her first few months in LA turned out. We don't find out what she's getting ready for or who exactly she's talking to until the very end when everything is wrapped up. I thought this was a unique spin that added depth to the story.

Overall though, I wasn't impressed. I felt like the dialogue was unrealistic and I didn't particularly like any of the characters except maybe Tate (who was a sweet, animal lover) and Dani's roommate, Brit (who was the most eccentric of the bunch and who was Dani’s only true friend in my opinion). Dani was a bit too snobbish for my taste and Elise was self-absorbed and annoyed me to no end. I thought that the drama between her and Dani ended a little too perfectly and conveniently to be believable. I also didn’t think that Dani and Tate had the best chemistry, but I did enjoy watching their friendship grow.

Even though this wasn’t one of my favorites, it is a quick, fun read and I think it might still be worth picking up if you like lighthearted new adult romances.

I received this novel from the Publisher in exchange for an Honest Review

Dani has just graduated college, picked up her life and Moved From Chicago
to California, LA to be exact. She is going to pursue her dreams of working
with her favorite indie film Director. Unfortunately, when she gets to LA things
are not what she planned for. The company she is to intern with has gone under,
and nobody let her know. Luckily for Dani when going to meet her roomate, she totally
took her in under her wing.

Dani ends up at an ice cream shop, and has a blast from the past when she
sees her best childhood friend! Everything seems like it's coming together for
Dani when her BFF offers to help Dani get a job, but in life we learn nothing is free, and
she has a few expectations of Dani...

I think this is a really cute light read for the summer time. The authors writing is excellent
and I found it very easy to get through this read.
My only problem with this read is it didn't come off as a New Adult novel. It read more of a Young Adult,
a more mature Young Adult don't get me wrong, but If I absolutely had to, I wouldn't classify this as a New
Adult novel. But because of the characters ages, I guess technically it is.

I like how Dani is a bit quirky, she writes rules out for EVERYTHING. How to Survive a plane ride, How not to be scared
of heights, How to seduce my best fiends boyfriend, lol! I really did enjoy her as a character, but I also think she was very flawed
and at time came off immature.

Tate wasn't one of my favorite male hero's. Probably one of the most unmemorable. But that's not to say
I didn't like him, because he wasn't bad, just, he wasn't someone I would consider book boyfriend
material.

I do have to say, my FAVORITE character in this whole book is Brit! She is like A little ray of sunshine
on a cloudy day, I definitely could go for some more of her, maybe get a whole novel on her, hint hint!
All in all this is def a cute summer contemporary and I do know a few people I would recommend this to
or even buy it for!

Dani had high hopes and rose colored glasses when thinking of breaking out of Illinois and heading to the City of Angels but her first day in LA was something of which nightmares are made. On top of the no good, very bad day, Dani runs into a blast from her past ... one of her closest friends from home. While this should be a happy moment, the old friend wants Dani to seduce her gorgeous TV star boyfriend to see if he is trustworthy. Dani discovers that seducing someone is a bit harder than making a list and having high hopes.

I didn't NOT like Rules of Seduction, but it is not one of my favorite novels this year. For me, it felt a little all over the place with what was going on within the pages. The characters were ... okay. I wanted to know a bit more about each of them and I think that a little more depth would have done them some good. I was also a little surprised with the immaturity. These kids are out of college, I wasn't expecting it to feel so incredibly young. Granted, that could be just that I'm feeling super old in my 34 years but I don't think that is the case. I found myself rolling my eyes and thinking "REALLY?!?" quite a few times at the situations these characters seemingly put themselves through.

I did find quite a few quotes that I really enjoyed and it was a bit funny at times. Unfortunately, that wasn't a redeeming enough quality to save it from the three stars that I thought this should receive. After I read this, I found out that the author has a pretty big history in television and that makes sense because since the majority of this novel takes place on a set and it seemed like it was very well fleshed out.

I might be interested in reading what else comes out by this author ... it looks like this is her first book and I'm wondering if future novels will be even better.

Dani is an aspiring young film maker trying to find her way into the movie business, when she finally gets to Hollywood to start a new life working for a small company, she finds herself into situations she thought could never happen, but at least she has her rules...

I did have mixed feelings about this book. Most of the time I found the characters to be stereotypical and cliche, and they were always easy to guess right off the bat if your gut feeling about them is right or not But sometimes I felt myself surprised at how much I could relate to the characters- helping out a friend in need and being in a web of lies. It's something that happens to all of us and Dani is able to pull her character together and figure out what she wants, not from the get go but she finds herself, someone who she never thought she would be. I wished they would have gone a little further into depth about the characters beforehand. How Dani was in college and more in the background of her and Elise when they were children. I did like how real Mullins was able to make this Hollywood. She did not take a turn on it as paparazzi and only told the bad that everyone sees and she didn't take the mainstream authors take on it where Hollywood is a fantasyland where all your dreams come true. Dani is able to go into Hollywood and find herself, coming in with all these ideas that everyone in Hollywood is stuck up and bitchy, but she finds that life isn't as black and white as everyone makes it, there are reasons for everything, and sometimes you have to break the rules, because they just don't fit anymore.Even Lexi has reasons for how she acts and Tate has more underneath. Dani finds friends in the people she never would have dreamed of and the people who she thought she was able to trust were not even her friends. This book had lessons about how to live by rules, but it turned to a novel about how to live without them. It took an unexpected turn that was very encouraged.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this novel in return for an honest review

If you follow me on tumblr you will have seen that I had a lot to say about this book. It took me quite a long time to get into this novel, to enjoy it, and to like the characters.

I was unsure of the premise from the off: a girl attempts to seduce her friend's boyfriend, as a favour to the friend, to make sure he's not the cheating kind. There's more to this novel than just that; it explores the idea of writing and hollywood and trying to find a job fresh out of university. But, for the most part, it's a love story. And I knew that the girl would end up falling in love with her friend's boyfriend (because, come on, it was inevitable), and I worried there'd be cheating, which I'm not a massive fan of reading about.

But, actually, though the whole idea is absurd (no one would really ask their friend to seduce their boyfriend for them, and even if they were stupid enough to ask, no one would be stupid enough to say yes), I thought it was handled quite well - even if it did wrap up a little bit too neatly in the end.

This book is fun and light-hearted, and relatively well written. At first, many of the characters struck me as a bit silly/unrealistic, or they made decisions that I really didn't agree with - like the main character, Dani. I did develop a soft spot for them by the end, and wanted Dani and Tate to end up together. It just took me a little while to get to that level, as Tate irritated me for the first few chapters, and Dani for about half the book.

If you're looking for a quick, light New Adult read, then I'd recommend this for you. You can't take this book too seriously, and you have much more fun reading it when you don't!

The number one rule that everyone should learn from this book is:

 photo tumblr_mu3gu4Lnzs1sk8cigo1_400_zps10jqemtq.gif

This is literally the entire book. NEVER. TRUST. ANYONE. Especially in Hollywood, because they are all bad people.

I mean seriously, what is wrong with these people. Nothing, other than they are self obsessed people with a separate room just for their egos. Dani grows up and gets thick skin pretty quick while working on the set of Vamp Camp (I found this title to be hilarious, because let's be honest, if this were actually a show, it would have just as high of a rating as it did in the book), and attempting to "seduce" the male lead Tate Lawrence.

I really liked Tate, and what everyone did to him was crap, I would have been much more pissed off than he was. He and Elise were an interesting couple, but I'm glad that everything worked out the way it did.

Tate and Dani's interactions were well written, and I looked forward to when they hung out together. Overall, a decent book, but pretty predictable. It was a fairly short read, but was so cute that it made me smile most of the time. I recommend this one to romantics who love HEAs with a bit of free time on their hands.
