This is a really good reference for parents interested in signing with their baby. I was just starting to get into it when my baby first got sick, and put it on the back burner to just focus on helping her feel good. Lucky for me that although she isn't speaking yet, she is pretty fantastic at communicating with me, because the book is still barely lit on the back burner. ;) Anyway, the little cartoons are great. I started to get my 7 year old involved by copying the pictures and having her cut them out and color them. Then she taped them around the appropriate place in the house where we might use them. Good idea for getting the older sibs into signing with the babes.
This is almost exactly the same as Baby Signing Essentials also by Nancy Cadjan. This book, however, has a list of signs with the helpful pictures altogether at the back of the book. This also includes the alphabet and numbers! I would highly recommend reading a physical version of this book. The ebook is a little finicky.
Sign language has been incredibly helpful for us. We started introducing signs around 9 months, but my son started using them effectively around one year. At first we just had signs in place for the most important stuff, like help and milk. As he got older, we added a few more, but kept it simple. This book is useful whether you plan to use 5 signs or 50.
I still want to keep this book handy, as I'd like to keep teaching my 1 year old more signs, but I don't remember to work on it very consistently with her. She does know milk, please, and more though!
I gave up on this one, hence the 1 star. 🫠 I couldn't get more than halfway through before finding a different book that was easier for me to connect with. I feel like the author of this book spent the whole time trying to convince me why I should learn and sign with my baby. But...I was convinced before I even started reading - I wanted this to teach me, not keep saying the same thing but in a different way to convince me. I didn't really need all the research behind baby signing, and I didn't realize this book was mostly that. I'd come across it in another baby book so thought I'd give it a shot, but I didn't even get to the illustrated part of the book before giving up on it. This style just wasn't for me.
I have now read through the chapter on 8-12 Months and love this book! It gives awesome evidence on why teaching your baby to sign can be beneficial to their development and temperament. The illustrations are great at showing how to make the signs. I'm still waiting for Adam to sign as he is just turning 9 months. I've stepped up the intestity of how often I sign and have added in more so hopefully it'll click soon!
I love this book!! It's not your normal baby sign book... the author goes through baby signing from several different perspectives-- by age and development (what kind of signs they can do & understand at different points... recommending books and other ways to practice with them) and then she includes a little dictionary at the end with signs sorted by category. The pictures are clear and easy. For anyone with a child who wants to sign, this book gets 5 stars.
Way to much "selling" the concept. Seems like the author was teaching the reader, through repetition, that the idea will work. Most readers will get the basic idea of what baby signing is all about and the value it has...however...it didn't need 30+ pages of preface, ah ha moments, and constant repetitiveness. Concept is interesting and probably works...review is not on the concept. The presentation of the concept sucked....get to the point and shorten the book.
Loved this book! We bought it during my pregnancy and practiced before our son was born. After he was born we would use signs when talking to him. After 6 months he could understand some of the signs. Now he is 18 months and knows 30 plus signs, as well as some speaking words. The book was very informative and creative. We use the book daily. I recommend it to any body interested in teaching signing to babies or toddlers. It breaks down teaching into sections depending on their age.
So easy to use! We started using signs with our son when he was four months old. By six months old, he was using many of the signs himself and he is still adding more all the time. It is a huge help to him and us- we don't always have to try to figure out why he's upset. He may not be able to verbally tell us yet, but he can communicate the problem.
I was really excited about this book, until I read a few scientific research studies about signing to babies who CAN hear. Some studies show no benefit to signing with your baby, and a few actually show SLOWER speaking abilities with these methods. As far as I'm concerned, I wont be trying it with my baby. Maybe when ALL the research shows benefits, then I'll try it with the next baby.
I like this signing book best, though I've just begun to even think about it. I like the organization and I really like the way they teach you the signs -- it just seems simpler with this one. I'd like to get the flashcards that Cadjan developed, too.
It has all the basic signs that every baby should learn. I used this one for my daughter and she learned a few. I wanted to make her learn more, but she is now able to talk and is no longer interested in learning more signs. We had a lot of fun while learning these new skills!
I think this was a helpful introduction to the how/why/when of signing with baby but I would have liked a larger signing vocabulary. Also, I thought some of the illustrations were a bit confusing.
