This installment was like 200+ pages of pure carnage, there really wasn't much of a story in this one but it did offer some character development and I really liked the battles.

I'm looking forward to reading Vol. 4!

• side note for faithful followers.

My reading has slowed down drastically because I'm back to work and doing 40+ hours and hitting 30.000+ steps daily. :|

Still here though, just having difficulty keeping caught up.

Hope you're all reading something enjoyable! :)

THIS IS DOWNRIGHT HORRIFYING (i love it)

i think it’s safe to say that i’m enjoying the :re series more than the first series which is so, so surprising considering i *love* the first Tokyo Ghoul series

i think :re pretty much improves on everything i didn’t like from the original series, which i can’t really talk about without getting spoiler-y, but to sum it up:
- the fight scenes are clearer
- the character intros are better!
- there isn’t a character i don’t like reading about
- no infodump-heavy chapters (yet!!)
- :re is waaay darker imo (i know, i didn’t think it was possible either)

the plot-twists and revelations are still as unexpectedly heartbreaking as ever and this world is still as fucked up as i remember. 5 stars lol

Cool, beautiful and all that but also VERY confusing at times. My head hurts.

OH BUT the fact that Sasaki’s subordinates call him “MAMAN” IS MY FAVORITE THING OHMBMBMN so endearing 😩💔

Però è totalmente cambiato come ghoul. Wow!

Hmmmmmm...not sure this really contributed much to the overall plot...this volume seemed to be battle scene after battle scene after battle scene which did become a bit tedious.

Also...how the hell are you supposed to keep track with what is going on??! Yes the artwork is great but it can also be really hard to decipher what is going on and who is being pierced by who’s kagune, etc.

I’m also not very happy that a character I really liked in TG is now going to be a main antagonist in this series - talk about changing your perception of someone! :(

But...Haise/Ken - I am completely there for and looking forward to their “progression” in the next volume.

description
Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

In the sequel series to Tokyo Ghoul, Haise Sasaki has been tasked with teaching his special squad of half-ghouls how to be outstanding Investigators, but this is complicated by the troublesome personalities of his subordinates and his own uncertain grasp of his Ghoul powers. Will he and the members of his squad become heroes or monsters, taken out by the other squads in the Commission of Counter Ghoul...?!

The art is especially great in this volume with all the battle frames. I was actually more confused by some of the plot frames than I was by the battle ones... so that was quite unexpected. I really love how the mangaka uses the art to SHOW the story.

This volume is all about the battles that result of the raid from volume 2! It's crazy and intense and people are dying and flying and GAH!!!! You just can't believe the battle plot. I have actually been waiting for a volume like this where it is just intense battle after battle.

The tension is SO, SO high in this volume as we are intercut from battle to battle. I was certainly rooting for certain characters to stay alive and trying to ascertain the motivations of the ghouls and why they fought when they did. Really despite not always understanding characters their comings and goings felt quite natural and motivated from internal ideas.

The battles were AUTHENTIC! I had to up my rating because really I was totally wowed... I was partcularly enthralled with how Shizaru figured out his battle and Juzo's role in the battles. In fact I can say that Juzo may eclipse Haise as my favorite character. We get some of his back story in this volume and I just want to know more! I do think the fact I haven't read Tokyo Ghoul affects what I understand but I also think it's only the difference between this being a 4 and a 5 star. I'm not missing THAT much and am quite enjoying the wild ride...

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⋆⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⋆⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

This is a multi-volume series and there may be references to the plot of those volumes... SO READ WITH CARE! Here is my review of 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

Thanks to Edelweiss and Viz Media for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. This has not influenced my opinion.

Tokyo Ghoul will forever be one of my favourite mangas. I look up to Ishida's art style more than any other mangaka (even did a giant painting of Kaneki last summer); the maturity in his storytelling and character development outshines that of most other seinens I've read over the years. I really don't know why it's taken me so long to get through :re when I hold such fondness for the original series, but after a long break since reading vol 2, I'm finally motivated to complete them all!

My favourite characters have pretty much solidified themselves. Urie has my whole heart despite going a little crazy for recognition in the last few chapters... I suspect my willingness to forgive his faults is because I'm already so fond of the typically strange characters like my boy Suzuya! It's also really lovely that Ishida has included a transgender character—Mutsuki—so seamlessly into this story; most other popular shonen and seinen manga tend to treat LGBTQ characters as comedic relief, with any substance to them being replaced with jokes or flamboyance. Mutsuki on the other hand is such a well-layered and integral character to the plot, holding a leading role in the CCG ghoul investigations, while their gender identity is almost never brought up other than to build up their backstory. I love him and the entire Mado squad so much!

My only complaint with this volume is one that's consistent with a lot of other manga I read. The action scenes were a little hard to follow in the first half of things, though I wasn't too bothered by that since the separate sequences started becoming more and more distinct each time we panned back to them. It's so difficult to portray large-scale battles in such a condensed media form like manga without things getting a little murky. Otherwise, I highly enjoyed this volume. The new ghoul on this cover is so creepy, I'm worried about how big of a problem he'll become for the CCG, and what his connections to Haise/Kaneki may be after the subtle reveal we got...

I think this volume suffers from what I call the bleach syndrome where there are too many characters and too many battles that the author more so the reader gets confused with whats going on, you have the rescue of Mutsuki but then you have another guy named the reaper attacking, Haise to the rescue but then Urie takes her away but a mission distraction to save Mutsuki but he wants credit so he tries to take down another few people, meanwhile another battle s going elsewhere with Nutcracker and somewhere Suzuya is taking out others and god knows we focus back on Haise and as he is losing his inner battles to Ken and losing his identity, Arima to the rescue, also Hinami is there? And there is a sidestory which was still good with Suzuya and his partner Abara and the latter learning to trust his instinct and save his partner. This volume was a fucking mess and the art was still okay but a clear focus makes it the worst volume of TG.

all'inizio sono i Pagliacci.
Poi diventano i Clowns.

So that's what happened to the missing bodies ...
In this volume the first big raid in this sequel on the auction house held by the Madame, but things are not that simple Agori tree were involved with the auction and we get various fights
but the major one is the guy on the cover who turned out to be former agent Takizawa with Sasaki former Kaneki ... and that made me think various bodies were missing from the past series Takizawa was one of them but most important body is Amon so are we gonna see him like that one day ???!!! that would be GREAT!!! :P
Hinami :( what will happen to her will he save her ???!!!

Syok!!!!!

Haduhhh...luar biasa.

Still not feeling this much. I mean the fights are still epic and brutal and that's great, but the rest? It feels like it's missing the connection to the characters. Maybe I just can't get used to the change. Owell...still decent.

Too many characters. (by now, I don't have a grasp on the CCG investigators except for Haise and Mado's squad and Juzo).
Confusing battle scenes, even if they look epic. (most of the time I can't tell who pierced or killed who)

I'm hoping that those lost memories will come back and they'll bring Haise closer to the Ghoul world, because the CCG world is boring. if only we could focus on the suspicious Arima, it might be more interesting.

I just can't with characters who are used by the people around them even though they were the most innocent at the start of the story. I am crying for what they did to my poor boy Kaneki.

I just think that it's so interesting how much my opinion about the doves has changed. In Tokyo Ghoul, I DESPISED them. But in this book, I am rooting for them over the ghouls? Pretty cool if you ask me.

Sasaki e Hinami. E ripartono i feels!
SPOILER

Anzi no, che badass!!

hinami <333 she’s so grown up omg. her saying she wouldn’t ever let anything happen to kaneki even if he doesn’t remember her anymore really touched me!! their sibling dynamic is one of the few that i really really like. && her saying ‘i won’t let you fight alone anymore’ was sooooo sad and touching. kaneki losing himself over protecting her and the rest of anteiku and now that everyone can protect themselves he is getting repaid.

:(((((( kanekiiii

the switch from sasaki to kaneki with the finger click.... WAHHHHH. you don’t even understand i love kaneki so much.

also iconic kaneki panel lolzzzz

onky reason this isn’t five star is because the kaneki fight was the only one i really cared about lol.

urie a bitch

I'm not really good at memorizing the names of characters, so the previous Tokyo Ghoul volumes might be needed as your companion. I've got to be honest, this volume is somewhat incomprehensible. The tricky part about this volume is that you can't stop rooting for CCG even though you know it's the opposite when you're reading Tokyo Ghoul.
