- Brings together the best criticism on the most widely read poets, novelists, and playwrights- Presents complex critical portraits of the most influential writers in the English-speaking world--from the English medievalists to contemporary writers- Introductory essay by Harold Bloom
I found it interesting that I had already read many of the contributions to this collection in the individual books on Hesse that the contributors had already published. I also confirmed that despite my absolute devotion to the subject, as evidenced by the almost 60 books about, or by, Hermann Hesse that I’ve read, I still find some style of literary criticism simply unreadable due to its philosophical musings. Nonetheless this book was still a great jumping off point for readers curious about the literary merits of some of Hesse’s work as well his place in the German as well as world literature. I was also especially thankful that the editor, Harold Bloom, included the references to the books that he excerpted these essays from and thus allow the reader to read more in the particular style of the contributors that were more engaging.
