The Hero in this book has been betrayed by his fiancée. When he takes her home to meet his family, she immediately ditches him for his very young cousin, who is the heir to the title.

To get over her, the Hero goes to Africa and cannot be contacted. He has been exploring w a friend and his mail for the past year, has been collected by the concierge at a hotel in Paris where he will stay. Amazingly, in the pile he notices one that looks like it is from his ex. It is dated nearly a year ago and in it she confesses that she still loves him. However, he reads another letter from his mother dated several days ago, urging him to come home because his cousin had an accident and died. His uncle, the Marquis, has also suffered a stroke. He is now the heir.

He had been very hurt by the betrayal of his fiancée and cannot quite believe that she had a change of heart soon after he left. But then, he notices that the hotel concierge has a habit of dating the envelopes when they receive it and the ex’s letter is dated just 3 days prior, same as his mother’s! So then he feels doubly betrayed and angry. She had been going to deceive him once again.

He goes for a walk and notices a young girl about to throw herself in the river! He manages to talk to her and convinces her to reconsider. He gives her a meal as she looks very hungry and they talk. He learns that her parents are dead and she is now penniless and alone. The Hero comes up w a plan to save both of them. Him from humiliation, and she from despair. She will return with him to England and he will introduce her as his fiancee.

When they return to his hotel, he gets a telegram that his uncle has also now passed away, so he is now the Marquis. In England, he discovers that the ex has remained at the estate and plans to attend the funeral. So he leaves instructions to have her removed! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 But this ex will not be stopped!! She tries to warn off the heroine, then she sends a box of poisoned chocolates to her. Sadly some unfortunate doggie gets poisoned instead and they all realize in time that the chocolates were tampered with. The heroine is afraid, she also thinks someone else may be trying to kill her. There is a mystery about her background. The Hero knows better and is convinced that his ex is behind this attempt.

However a few days later the heroine is kidnapped. The ex comes to the Hero and tries to blackmail him into marrying her, and threatens to kill the heroine. The Hero is no dummy and instead turns the tables on the evil ex, and scares her into revealing the location of the heroine.

He successfully rescues the heroine, they confess their love to each other and he wants to marry her for real now. But the heroine is still frightened of something or someone and wont agree to putting the Hero’s life at risk if he is associated with her. Just then, they get word that the Tsar of Russia is dying. The heroine is relieved and she tells her backstory.

Her father was a Russian Prince, but the Tsar hated him because he helped some jews to escape persecution in Russia. The heroine and her mother suspect the father has been murdered by the henchmen’s of the Tsar, and they flee to Paris where the mother dies also. But now that the evil Tsar is dying, the henchmen wont bother looking for the heroine anyway, so she can marry yer Hero and have a HEA!

Warren Wood is handsome, loyal and devoted to Magnolia. However, the one thing he lacks is a title and Magnolia betrays him in a heartbeat for the opportunity to be engaged to the Marquis of Buckwood.

For beautiful and beguiling as she is, behind her perfect exterior lies a scheming manipulative personality that is desperate for wealth and standing in Society.

Distraught and vowing to eschew love for evermore, Warren seeks solace in the African jungle, determined to forget the woman whose lovely face has nearly driven him to madness.

But now the wheel of fate has turned and suddenly a legacy is calling him home to take up responsibilities he never dreamt would be his, and the chance to be reunited with Magnolia who surprisingly begs his forgiveness.

Determined not to answer her siren’s call, he leaves for England taking with him the sweet but mysterious Nadia, another young person desperate to leave behind the past. Together they concoct a charade that should free Warren from Magnolia’s clutches and offer Nadia a new life.

As the time for Warren to meet Magnolia again grows closer, he begins to feel nervous. Will he be able to resist the seductive charms of the woman he once loved to distraction? For above all else Magnolia is determined to marry well and she is not going to let a little thing like Warren’s heart stand in her way.

I like how the Russian situation was used as a backdrop to this novel. I felt it ended rather too quickly. And as always, the dashing hero saved the brave heroine.
