Good diagrams. Advice seems sound. Clear explanations.

Explains importance of knowing the value of pieces in relation to other pieces and how this relates to knowing when to make an even trade. Discusses forks, pins, and skewers - what they are and how to make use of them. Talks about when and why to castle. Explains about different stages of the game. Gives advice about how to take advantage of a weak back rank, as well as how to try to defend against it if on the other side of it. Other generally helpful advice is included. This is a quick and easy read. I hope the author will correct the error (one instance) of "me and my." Worth reading.

I think of myself as a casual player, just a step past a beginner, but after playing as many games as I have (over 1000 games with an opponent who used to be a master) maybe I am better. I can say this book reinforced many things I already know, clarified a bit and did lend some solid advice. For the price it is worth buying. It is a quick read and Maxen Tarafa is a good writer who is to the point and utilizes visuals. In addition to pictures, he also has links to YouTube videos if you need more clarification but I thought his writing was clear enough. This is one book of three and I intend to read all three. I don't believe they need to be written in any certain order.

Excellent!

I was aware of most of the principles covered in this book but I was not proficient in ways of employing them. It was so refreshing to see each principle stated in plain English, and portrayed with a simple diagram. I have been playing for years and, though I am not rated, I would consider myself to be slightly better than average. I intend to read this book again and try to instill these basics into every game I play. I feel that it will improve my game and I recommend it to all but the very experienced and advanced players.

Simple, but I liked it. I like how he was just straight up, I'm not an expert. This book will not make you a grand-master at chess, but here are some helpful hints to beat people who are casual chess players.
