Finishing this book was like drinking cough medicine for the alcohol: It was weak, it tasted awful, and it upset my stomach. It's like the author took a respectable fantasy story and stripped out all the redeeming qualities before regurgitating it back onto the page. And I almost wish there were a law against writing such insipidly anti-feminist characters.
I think I'll recycle this book so I'm not responsible for it polluting the mind of potential readers.

The saying "never judge a book by its cover" is very true in the case of Lamp Black, Wolf Grey. I was expecting a story of magic and myth entwined with a modern, romantic time-slip. What I got was very dissatisfying.
The main character of the story is Laura, an artist who moves to Wales with her husband, hoping to conceive a child, which, as the story unravels, she attempts to do by sleeping with other men! She's torn up by guilt after the first affair, supposedly, but then falls in love with someone else and decides he is her true soul mate! Laura is an insipid character who does nothing to redeem herself after her behaviour but, in fact, feels justified in betraying her husband.
And where does Merlin the Magician come into all of this? Well, if you're a fan of Arthurian legends, like I am, then I don't think you really want to know. The story really failed to make the most of the legend and bring it into a modern love story that you could believe in and enjoy. Instead, I found it trite and dull.
This is one of those books where the reader can see what is coming from a mile away but the characters are either too dim or too self-absorbed to see it. I also found the copy of the book I read was riddled with errors, whether from the printing or writing, I can't say. Towards the end of the story, one of the characters has been walled up in a dungeon and is woken by the sound of a "scratching nose"! That hammered the final nail in to the coffin for me and I lost all respect for the story after that.
I do hate to give books a bad review, but this one disappointed me so much. I give the book one star for its premise and another because I'm feeling generous.

Paula Brackston once again lets her creative juices flow in the wild rustic countryside of her mystical homeland producing a heartbreaking story of beginnings and endings, ancient legend and myth mixed with a contemporary tale. Her characters both corporeal and fabled are impressive in their complexities and completeness. Her heroine is fallibly human so much so at times readers might want to shake her and her brush with fantasy is utterly convincing. Her co-stars are charming, mystical and scary. Her narrative is eloquent precise and foreboding, and illuminate her innate storytelling genius. Her cunning plot twist is nail-bitingly wonderful.
Paula has taken me on some wondrous journeys both past and present and I’m ready for where she takes me next!

I just feel that there was a lot of wasted potential here. Solidly meh. Also since when is Megan a Welsh name? Maybe it is but it didn’t feel that way when everyone else’s name is Twm or some shit like that. Also Laura was a prat and I hated her.

I suppose I enjoyed it well enough, as it was a light somewhat romantic? read. I wanted so much more out of Merlin, being a larger than life Legand (with a capital L) I had high hopes. He isn't what I expected in this story.
The begining had me intrigued but then it wasn't so mysterious because I began to predict what would happen (which I can't stand). I love supernatural novels but there needed to be more fire in Merlin and more sense in the connections. Laura is hard to love- and not just because of her sleeping around, there just wasn't a connect for me. Rhys had his draw, but sometimes I felt there needed to be more sense in all of this. I want strong female characters when I read, and that seems to be missing. It's not terrible, the wilds of Wales was a gorgeous setting (I have visited Wales and loved reading about it). I think people that enjoy romance and light reads will devour it, if they don't mind deception in relationships. Rhy's was appealing, I can't lie- who doesn't love mysterious men? But I spent a lot of time getting annoyed by Megan- for the time alone she should have been a stronger woman- but that's just my opinion. Merlin... what is the connection? Did I miss it? Someone please tell me. I have such mixed feelings about this novel. I give over to others to decide, I think I was looking for heavier characters and a magical storyline with Merlin leading the way, or at least a spirited woman guiding us along.

Once again I loved this book and to think I’d never thought of reading fantasy before! I’d never read books with fantastical and mythical creatures but this story doesn’t have those and it is for me ‘believable’. Laura the main character was such a good choice by Paula the author. She mentions at the end the storyline is taken from her own experiences of where she lives in remote Wales and it sounds such an ideal idealistic place, so special and rather beautiful and a wonderful place to dream and write as she does.
Laura has many ups and downs and makes a huge mistake only to be found out by the reader! The story jumps back forth to an earlier time to present day and it’s not until near the end you see why Paula has written it like this. Two similar lives intertwined that had me completely engrossed with each of the characters. Dan the loving husband who’d do anything for Laura then back in time with Megan and Merlin which was such a tragic story. Throw in Steph and Angus and there two boys which is also a reflection of time gone by with the boys Megan looked after in the castle. I don’t want to give too much away but I must admit it’s so well done even if I could have slapped Laura a couple of times but you will find out why!

Lamp Black, Wolf Grey is an interesting book with a very intriguing Welsh setting. There are two storylines, a historical one and a contemporary one. The main character in the contemporary setting, Laura, is likable, yet flawed. I enjoyed things about both storylines, but there were also aspects that I didn't find appealing. I didn't like Laura's relationship with Rhys, but I did like the writing style and the way that Brackston tells a story. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC in return for an honest review.

Frustrated Mary Sue artist, trapped in an emotionally distant marriage, moves to a remote Welsh cottage in hopes of achieving fertility. (Whaat???) Contrived stupidity ensues.
Full disclosure: I only got to page 45 before tossing this book.
Apparently, this author has a Master's in Creative Writing. She certainly has skill at describing picturesque scenery, but when it comes to humanity and relationships and motivations, well, she must have skipped those classes.
One thing that was somewhat interesting was the lush descriptions she gives to her female protagonists, especially their thick, flowing hair. (Is having long, thick hair a romance trope?) However, the male characters are all flat and static. Rather than described, they are "told". He is imposing. He is borish. He is dense. Not sure if she is being lazy with characters she doesn't care about, or if she is trying to manipulate the reader into disliking them.
Romance books annoy me because they are so contrived. I gave up on this book after the scene where the chick has just taken a shower--is practically naked--and discovers a hunky stranger has invited himself into her home. Rather than freak out, rather than scream, or demand he leave, or call the police, or something reasonable, instead she flirts with him. She FLIRTS with a burglar, because home invasion really gets a girl's ovaries revving. Bear in mind, this is also about 10 minutes after she declined sex with her husband. Someone she claims to love.
Yeah, romances are way-stupid.

What in the heck did I just read?
What does Merlin have to do with any of it?
He's just kind of there...sort of. Sometimes. A little bit.
I would describe the plot, but I don't think there is one. There are two "stories" running parallel to each other; one is set in the past, one in the present.
In the past, Merlin instantly falls in love with a girl in Wales. Tragedy strikes for some ludicrous reason involving an evil lord and rivalries with neighboring kingdoms and love and blah blah blah. I mean, does it ever explain what Merlin is doing in the area anyway? Just passing through on his way to Arthur? And when "tragedy" strikes, why doesn't he use his magic on the stereotypical bad guy and just take his girl?
In the present, another girl exists in Wales. She is an artist that wants a baby and those are her only personality traits. Merlin sometimes appears to her but never really says anything important. He mentions that their destinies are linked somehow and that "ALL WILL BECOME CLEAR", but then nothing becomes clear. I think he used his magic to make her pregnant by just looking at her intensely while touching her stomach? But he made sure the baby has the DNA of her husband and not himself because...? I dunno. It was ridiculous.
I know that it sounds like Merlin is a main character, but he really isn't. He has maybe two pages of dialogue total. He is a distant background character that our female protagonists are inexplicably drawn towards.
I picked this book up because of the title (which is referring to paint colors, by the way.) I never thought I would read a book with Merlin as the romantic interest. This just goes to show that there are a lot of weird books out there.

I’ve read a lot of Brackston’s books, mainly her witch books, which are always entertaining and well written. This book was a little different than her signature witch books but it still had some of my favorite elements such as a mystical setting and a strong heroine that many readers can relate it. What I liked about her heroines is that they are also flawed in some way, and Laura is no different. For me though, Laura came with a little more baggage than some of Brackson’s other characters, which was fine– but different.
Even though Laura had some baggage and was a little more flawed than some of her typical heroines, she was still realistic, complex, and had very relateable flaws. I had a little difficulty with the relationship between Rhys and Laura, not because she was already married necessarily but just their interaction seemed off to me.Her inability to get rid of Rhys was just annoying and I was ready for their affair to end. I personally was kind of put off by Laura’s husband in the beginning so I wasn’t completely put off by her attraction to another guy but at the same time, Rhys was not the ��knight in shining armor’ that I had hoped.
I liked that the story of Merlin and Laura were woven together….past and present, but part of Merlin’s story seemed a little wanting for me. He continues to be a mysterious figure and I liked that, but at the same time I had hoped to form more of a connection to him as a reader. He’s such a legendary figure in literature and I just had hoped for more from him in this story. He just seemed more downplayed in this book and I wanted him to take center stage.
The over all setting and descriptions of the Welsh countryside were flawless as always. No one captures the magic of this beautiful land like Brackston. She writes with such admiration and love for her country that no one else can even come close to describing it’s beauty like her.
Overall this book was just ok for me. There were things that I liked and things that I didn’t but at the end of the day, I love Brakcston’s stories and her magical descriptions of Wales that I would read anything by her knowing that it would at least be a decent read if not a wonderful read!

Is there anyone who describes Wales better than Paula Brackston? Brackston excels in describing the wild Welsh setting, and infuses her home with a sense of rugged beauty and hidden magic.
“Lamb Black, Wolf Grey” tells dual stories in different times, both featuring the Legendary Merlin. Laura, a painter, and her husband Dan move to the Welsh countryside to make a fresh start after years of infertility. Interspersed throughout Laura’s story is the story of Megan, a servant in the house of a wicked lord, and her romance with the magician Merlin. Laura is a complex and likable heroine, with very relatable weaknesses. While the mythical Merlin remains enigmatic and mysterious. I adore historical fiction, so it surprised me that I found myself rushing through the historical parts to return to the compelling contemporary plot line.
Overall, I found the book to be an enjoyable, magical read. Though you should be warned, it might make you want to take a trip to the Welsh countryside.

You know when you read a book and it leaves you scratching your head, wondering what you just read? Well, my friends, that’s what this book had me doing. Honestly, three weeks later and I’m still wondering what I read.
I had high hopes for this book. So many people have compared it to the works of Susanna Kearsley—my favorite author—that I knew I had to give it a go. Big mistake. This book was all over the place.
We have the story of Laura and Dan—they’re married and moved to the Welsh countryside for a quieter life with hopes of conceiving a child. There’s something about Blaencwm (the house they moved into) that seems to have Laura’s lady bits wanting all the men. First, she enters into an affair with Rhys, this nutty little hermit living down the road who believes himself to be Merlin. It was obvious from the start the man had problems yet here Laura was shagging him like they were rabbits every time her husband went back to London on work. Then there was this weird thing going between Laura and the actual Merlin—I’m still a little puzzled by that whole ordeal. Laura wasn’t even a likable character from the start. She was selfish and demanding and always had something to whinge about.
Woven through Laura’s romps was the story of Megan, a nursemaid, and how she fell in love with Merlin yet their relationship was thwarted by Lord Geraint who was intent on claiming Megan as his mistresses and the magician Merlin for his weapon of war. This was the story that kept me reading. Megan’s story was great and pulled different aspects from various Arthurian legends but, sadly it wasn’t enough to save the book.
I spent the majority of the book thinking/hoping the stories would eventually met somewhere along the line. I kept trying to convince myself that it would eventually turn out that Laura was getting a chance to right the wrongs done to Megan. Honestly, I thought it was going to come down to Laura being a reincarnation of Megan and, unfortunately, that never happened. This was actually two different stories horribly mashed up into one book.
There was no justifiable means (i.e. the Laura/Rhys being reincarnated) for Laura to suddenly have these overwhelming desires for Rhys and Merlin and this instant, on the spot connection to them. Laura’s story was basically a bunch of nonsense that would have my grandmother clutching her pearls and saying, “tis a pit she’s a whore”.
Let’s not forget the fact there was so much potential by putting Merlin into the story. Although for some reason, it just became weird. Rather than making Merlin an actual person, there was this odd explanation in Laura’s story that he was just a character from a book that was wished to life by those who read about him. Like I said, it left me scratching my head.
Oddly enough, I found that I enjoyed the narrator. Marisa Calin added a nice Welsh inflection into the story and was rather easy to listen to.
Overall, I wasted an Audible credit and ten and a half hours of my life with this book. The only reason I gave it a 2 cup rating—which was rather generous—is because I did like Megan’s story, sadly the rest of the book was rubbish.

Woven through Laura’s romps was the story of Megan, a nursemaid, and how she fell in love with Merlin yet their relationship was thwarted by Lord Geraint who was intent on claiming Megan as his mistresses and the magician Merlin for his weapon of war. This was the story that kept me reading. Megan’s story was great and pulled different aspects from various Arthurian legends but, sadly it wasn’t enough to save the book.
I spent the majority of the book thinking/hoping the stories would eventually met somewhere along the line. I kept trying to convince myself that it would eventually turn out that Laura was getting a chance to right the wrongs done to Megan. Honestly, I thought it was going to come down to Laura being a reincarnation of Megan and, unfortunately, that never happened. This was actually two different stories horribly mashed up into one book.
There was no justifiable means (i.e. the Laura/Rhys being reincarnated) for Laura to suddenly have these overwhelming desires for Rhys and Merlin and this instant, on the spot connection to them. Laura’s story was basically a bunch of nonsense that would have my grandmother clutching her pearls and saying, “tis a pit she’s a whore”.
Let’s not forget the fact there was so much potential by putting Merlin into the story. Although for some reason, it just became weird. Rather than making Merlin an actual person, there was this odd explanation in Laura’s story that he was just a character from a book that was wished to life by those who read about him. Like I said, it left me scratching my head.
Oddly enough, I found that I enjoyed the narrator. Marisa Calin added a nice Welsh inflection into the story and was rather easy to listen to.
Overall, I wasted an Audible credit and ten and a half hours of my life with this book. The only reason I gave it a 2 cup rating—which was rather generous—is because I did like Megan’s story, sadly the rest of the book was rubbish.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. It's about an artist named Laura who decides to move to the mountains to find inspiration for her upcoming show. Her husband Dan is less enthusiastic about the move, but agrees to try and make it work -- commuting back and forth between London every week. At first, their new home seems ideal, but Laura soon notices strange things happening. She feels a presence in her home sometimes, and her new neighbor Rhys is both gorgeous and flirtatious. And then there's the mysterious man she keeps spotting in the woods.

Loved the medieval romance with Merlin. Hated the modern TV movie stuff about the cheating wife and her *thing* with the sexy psycho next door. The best thing about the book are the nature descriptions of trees and birds and flowers in Wales. Every time I read Paula Brackston I'm like "almost . . . almost . . . almost . . . damn! Well, maybe next time." But I keep on reading!

Okay. This was a good book overall. But so much of it annoyed me. For a "magical" story, I expected more from the connections the different characters had with each other. At the start, Laura and Rhys feel this strong CONNECTION, so much so that Laura cheats on her husband with him. So you think, okay. There is some real magical soulmate connection. Either they are Megan and Merlin reincarnated, or they are descended from them - SOMETHING. But, no. She was just attracted to him and cheated on Dan for no real reason. Afterwards you find out that Rhys is actually mentally unstable and dangerous. That's cool because there was no sign of that early on and he just completely changes out of nowhere. Cool. So Laura knows she doesn't want to be with him anymore and regrets being unfaithful to Dan. Okay. But then MERLIN comes into the picture and suddenly Laura ACHES to be with him, it's all she wants, he is EVERYTHING, life is hardly worth living without him. Why? WHY? No reason really. And Merlin wants to be with her too, quite a lot if not just as much. Why? You'd think there was some deeper connection, but no. He tells her that their lives are linked, but why? He ends up using his magic to help her conceive since he was never able to have a child, but, okay. Why? Did he choose her at random? Lure her there, help her out, just because? Why not do that for other women then? And why does Merlin want to be with Laura when the love of his life, Megan, is still "alive," at least in whatever magical sort of way that Merlin is still alive. So can't they still be together? Wouldn't that be enough? Who cares about Laura? Honestly. Such a pain. Also: Merlin felt rather wimpy to me. I expected a stronger, more interesting character. I mean this is the MERLIN of legend. He just seemed like any old sort of wimpy romantic character.

I have mixed feelings about this book because there were things I liked and things I didn't really like on this one. I love Brackston's other stories so I immediately requested this when I saw it. Overall I thought the story was great - I loved how Brackston mixed in the past with Laura's story. The things I didn't like were mostly tied to Laura's interactions with Rhys, her neighbor.
I haven't read many books about Merlin and that was one of the things that drew me into the story. I loved the historical parts of the story and honestly wished I could have had more of that.
Rhys was creepy and as his story was revealed, he became even creepier. On top of that, I was not a fan of the way Laura handled the situation with him.
Overall, this story was only ok for me. With that said, there were parts that I really did like and because of that I would encourage people to check it out.

Am I glad this is not my first Paula Brackston novel. I expect a beautifully flowing story with a large dose of magic from Brackston. I don't know what the shit this was but it definitely wasn't my idea of a good read. I did not appreciate how Laura shitty actions are glossed over with an, "it's ok, bad things AlmOsT happened to you. that's enough punishment". Call my bitter. 🤷 Read literally anything else from Brackston. Just not this one.

I kept reading it thinking there would be some redeeming quality but I just finished it and I can warn others to just put it down. Luckily I bought it at a discount store for 2.99 and I’m giving it to Goodwill now. I kind of laughed when I realized there were discussion questions at the end, like a book club is gonna pick this book to read and analyze. Everything about this cardboard cutout of a book is a no.

I really enjoyed this book! At times a little "cheesy" and predictable, this story definitely had its mysterious moments. I loved the Merlin storyline! Recommended for the gorgeous cover as well as the picture-perfect happily-ever-after.

The characters, setting and plot were so beautifully described more than any other Fantasy book ive ever read!!

Interesting story! A modern-day woman meets Merlin in .... a fantasy / alternate reality / genuine reality? Fun, either way! Who wouldn't enjoy conversing with Merlin?!?!?

Though this novel moves along pretty well, it was a little weak in plot complexity. You can guess at what's going to happen next and who the "mysterious" characters are. It was a fine read for a trip.

First off, the cover was gorgeous. That originally drew me in to the book, then the possibility of a Merlin retelling of the classic legend was another draw. I, for the most part, liked Laura's character (especially because she was an artist), despite her weakness. Because what woman hasn't felt neglected at one time or another and then flattered when a good-looking mysterious guy pays attention to you? But then, her inability to get rid of Rhys drove me nuts, especially after she knew something wasn't quite right with him, not to mention the whole cheating on your husband thing. At first, I was convinced that Rhys was Merlin (how badass would that be!), but then he turned out to be a creepy psycho. My biggest issue with this book was the jumping back and forth between Laura and Megan's story. I felt like the author should've either divided the books into more chapters (like one for every switch of character/time period) or at least put one of those "~" marks in-between, so you could differentiate between the two. I sometimes got lost.

I suppose I enjoyed it well enough, as it was a light somewhat romantic? read. I wanted so much more out of Merlin, being a larger than life Legand (with a capital L) I had high hopes. He isn't what I expected in this story.
The begining had me intrigued but then it wasn't so mysterious because I began to predict what would happen (which I can't stand). I love supernatural novels but there needed to be more fire in Merlin and more sense in the connections. Laura is hard to love- and not just because of her sleeping around, there just wasn't a connect for me. Rhys had his draw, but sometimes I felt there needed to be more sense in all of this. I want strong female characters when I read, and that seems to be missing. It's not terrible, the wilds of Wales was a gorgeous setting (I have visited Wales and loved reading about it). I think people that enjoy romance and light reads will devour it, if they don't mind deception in relationships. Rhy's was appealing, I can't lie- who doesn't love mysterious men? But I spent a lot of time getting annoyed by Megan- for the time alone she should have been a stronger woman- but that's just my opinion. Merlin... what is the connection? Did I miss it? Someone please tell me. I have such mixed feelings about this novel. Laura and Dan Matthews have recently moved to Blaencwm from the big city. Blaecncwm is an extremely old longhouse high up in the hills in Wales. Laura is a struggling artist in need of inspiration, which she hopes she fill find in the countryside, and a woman who very much desires a child, as does Dan. Enter Rhys. Rhys is a neighbor who is very much enthralled with Laura and pursues her relentlessly. Another wonderful neighbor, Anwen, is an older woman who lives nearby. Anwen doesn't always make a lot of sense to Laura; nevertheless, within her ramblings lie some wisdom if one listens closely. As if those two neighbors aren't enough, there's Merlin. Yes, THAT Merlin. Merlin once lived in this remote area, and he loved to roam the hills - with his young grey wolf by him at all times. Eventually, Merlin meets Megan, and he falls deeply in love with the young lady . Megan is under the employ of the ruthless and hated Lord Geraint, as nursmaid to his children. Geraint hears that Merlin is becoming quite the magician and tries to force him to do some things that are immoral, unethical, and go against everything Merlin stands for. However, if he refuses, Geraint decides to use Merlin's love for Megan to try to force him, hinting that if he won't, it's Megan who will pay. Forward to present day, and you will learn how Laura, Rhys, Anwen, Megan, and Merlin's stories all intertwine, despite the eons of years between them. This book will grab your attention and keep it. It's a great read.

Lamp Black, Wolf Grey is a story with the basic premise of Laura being unable to conceive. She feels she is stressed and in a rut about her painting so she and her husband Dan move to Wales to a remote country village where Laura meets an assortment of various character of a possible supernatural origin. A shift in the story occurs where the reader is transported for the past to the present and where the past and future are intertwined. Merlin the greatest wizards who ever lived and his wolf/dog make themselves present to Laura. Rhys is a neighbor who believes he is Merlin in a delusional manner yet convincing to all who see him and takes advantage of Laura’s weakness and becomes her one time lover. Laura’s appearance is very similar to the lost lover of Merlin’s. Merlin makes his appearance in both time periods to Laura. I really liked this book. I do not want to tell all about it so you should read it.
