The Carousel of Desire is a beautifully crafted set of stories by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt all focused on love, romance and desire.

This book was hard to get through, if I'm being honest. There are SO many character and storylines to follow that it was really hard to put the book down and pick it back up. I would forget what people were doing, and even when I took notes I felt it had the "Game of Thrones" effect for me. Too many people around, to many things going on and fantastic writing. It kind of upset me.

The Carousel of Desire was translated, and boy it is marvelous. Reading it felt like cheating fine chocolate or sipping on fine wine - it's absolutely glorious. If you want a well crafted book that felt like it was written by someone who truly loves literature and crafting stunning sentences, this book is for you. I was honestly floored by some of the descriptions because they're just... good. Too good.

All of the stories interconnect through a series of notes being passed around. The notes express sentiments of love, and every set of romantic partners/couples/trios/squares get one. Watching the drama play out was fun as well, but I felt like it would have been way more enjoyable if the stories had been separated. If I only had to focus on one story at a time instead of waiting twenty chapters to get the second part to a couple I read in chapter one.

HOT TAKE TIME: I'd also argue that this book is a very adult book. It's R rated for some of the sex scenes and it ventures into various types of sexual relationships. Old/young, true love, asexuality, threesomes, young love, and second chance at love being some of the major ones. But... you can tell this was written by a man (only at times). Some of the descriptions and comments said in the book don't sound romantic, they sound ravenous (but at times when it is supposed to be romantic). Sure, maybe the characters are just horn bags and like talking that way, but I didn't feel like the character studies felt like a variety. They felt like different ways to have sex written in a man's imagination.

One story really angered me, and it was a woman who hated her body. Yes, they exist and most women have their insecurities but some of the descriptions about her made me want to throw up. It didn't feel like it was written in an honest take, but rather as an insult to women who don't appreciate themselves. Others might not see it that way, but I really did not enjoy that story. I've read other novels where they address this issue, but they don't insult the character along the way. It felt... distasteful and weird. It's a bad execution of the idea, in my opinion.

Overall, this felt like a very pessimistic book for me. It's definitely not a book I enjoyed as a reader but other people will thoroughly enjoy it. Maybe I'm getting soft with the novels I like to read... Either way, it wasn't a book for me. I still think Eric-Emmanuel is a master of description and sounds like an author I would have read in my literature classes - beautiful writing style with beautiful prose.

One out of five stars - it's just not for me. It took me a long time fighting myself to finish this book, unfortunately.

“Папагалите от площад Арецо” е различна от “Любовен еликсир”, най-малкото с дължината си – пространни 650 страници, на които пърхат пъстроцветни и кривоклюнести папагали, а хората са по-невъздържани, по-кресливи, по-необуздани от тях. Живеещите в центъра на Брюксел са жужащ кошер от емоции, от скрити желания, от щения, които не могат да бъдат извадени наяве – и всичко си тече бавно, по реда си, скрито-покрито, толкова различно от света на социалните мрежи и папаращината, който приемаме за даденост. В тази подредена, аристократична и ясно йерархизирана общност положението се променя, когато няколко души получават еднотипна бележка със следния текст: “С тази бележка само ти обръщам внимание, че те обичам. Подпис: знаеш кой.” Тази бележка става катализатор на промени, които вихрено обръщат живота на получателите им – някои литват, други се сгромолясват.

Ça y est, je suis pour la première fois très déçue par Schmitt. L'idée de départ du livre est très bien mais malheureusement très mal traitée. Beaucoup trop de personnages, ça part dans tous les sens et on se perd. Cerise sur le gâteau, un personnage ressemble à Strauss-Kahn et ça n'apporte strictement rien! Schmitt est-il tellement à cours de personnages qu'il doive aller chercher l'inspiration dans une actualité passée vue, revue, remâchée, etc?

Dans ce roman Schmitt nous dépeint les mœurs des habitants de la place d'Arezzo. Il s'immisce dans leur vies intimes pour nous faire une critique de la société de nos jours. Le livre est un peu osé, mais le style fluide et agréable comme à l'habitude de ce merveilleux écrivain.

Всъщност писането много добре се връзва с брака. И ето ти в резултат субективната, лична енциклопедия на Шмит, посветена на любовта. Един социален, респективно читателски, експеримент.

С това анонимно писмо-признание писателят въвлича в книгата безкрайна върволица от герои и човешки съдби, сред които, разбира се, и Негово Величество Читателя (Зрителя). Защото това не е само текст, това е пъстроперо, полифонично, полисексуално представление с изкусно гримирани и костюмирани актьори, написано с любов за почитателите на Шмит. В него гласовете на актьорите са равнопоставени на гласа на разкавача. Няма хладина, няма дистанция, няма присъди. Шмит просто им дава думата, приема различността им и за пореден път демонстрира невероятното си умение да се радва на живота като истински французин.

Това е неговата енциклопедия на любовта, която някои биха нарекли енциклопедия на сексуалността. Персонажите му принадлежат към различни социални прослойки, имат различен пол, възраст и различна сексуална ориентация – хомо, les perroquais frхетеро, би- и асексуални. Политици (зад чиято история не е трудно да разпознаем скандала с Доминик Строс-Кан), бизнесмени, богаташи, бедняци, добряци, наивници, грубияни, млади и стари, всякакви обитатели на площад Арецо, сред тях и сводобно летящите папагали. От тях блика животът в неговата пленителна и живителна многоликост. Да, сексуалността на моменти е стряскаща с крайните си вариации, но никога груба, вулгарна или евтино разголена. И под тази пъстра илюстрация на пяната на своето време, в което сексуалността е над всичко, откриваме абсолютният оптимизъм на Шмит, който не може да се сдържи да не изкрещи: „Докажете ми, че любовта не съществува.“

Съществува, разбира се, доказва го ефектът на анонимното писмо. То ражда всякакви истории, не само красиви. Защото хората усещат и очакват различни неща от един и същи жест. И често в любовта произнасят едни и същи изречения, но рядко в подходящия момент. В този роман животът просто демонстрира изобретателността и превъзходството си пред който и да е писател в създаването на истории.

„И сега, докато вървяха по тротоара, минувачите имаха усещането, че са влезли в някакъв шантав филм, в който чрез дяволско наслагване картината идваше от цивилизацията, а звукът – от природата.“

В този пищен спектакъл папагалите са напълно равностойни актьори. Пъстри, крещящи, бъбриви на всякакви езици, но мълчаливи на своя си език, гальовни, ухажващи, съешаващи се, те са едновременно хипербола, алегория и олицетворение на еротичността. Прелюдия към всяка част от романа, те допълват фоновия звук с жизнерадостта на бразилските ритми и с багрите върху платната на Тиеполо, Курбе, Мане, Реноар.

„Единствено тукашните деца смятаха за нормално, че на това място са се настанили папагали, но всички знаят, че слабостта – а и силата – на младите умове, е да приемат всякакви ситуации.“

Харесва ли ни или не, такъв е животът. Има толкова вида щастие, колкото и хора.

Как да се опише роман, който много ти е харесал? Чак ми се иска да прасна няколко спойлера. Няма, от мен да мине.
В началото си запленен от красотата на площад "Арецо", от папагалите, които са навсякъде (колкото и странно да звучи и човек да не може да си го представи), от пищността и състоянието на героите. Всичко, което сте прочели до тук, е напълно грешно и огледално на първоначалната представа.
Красотата и папагалите са само декор. Тя прави картините пленителни и показва статутa на неприкосновеност на тази част от Брюксел, а животинките носят настроение, обогатяват с присъствието си реалността. Това е шаблонът.
Богатството... Ами, не то не е водещо. Когато вече се запознаеш с персонажите( първата част представя всички и се объркваш), научиш имената им и частта на всеки един спрямо другите, вече не ги приемаш за богати и влиятелни.
Пленителността на романа се крие в човешките отношения. А те са много и разнообразни. Навсякъде витае сексът, но и любовта има своята част. Не това не е роман за секса също, защото зад него се крият помисли, желания и интриги.
Преди да си се усетил вече си част от площада. Живееш на него и героите са твои съседи. Повече не броиш страниците (защото 650+ страници са си нещо). Ти си комшия на всички и чакаш да те споменат в романа.
Романът не е нещо революционно, нито историята иновативна. Всичко е семпло и изградено около отношенията. Защото те са най-важни- връзката ни със света. А и читателят не иска нищо повече, те са напълно достатъчни.
СПОЙЛЕР: Не се лъжете по началото и жълтите писма. Тяхната роля не е такава, каквото си мислите. Романът не е детективски.

Some books feed one's pessimism with regard to humanity and the state of the world, other books tend to preserve a sense of optimism and hope. Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt is a writer who, with each new book, feeds that optimism - or keeps it alive, at least - and manages to restore my hope. I believe that is the main reason why I love his books and am always happy to find that a new one has been published.

This book is, probably, one of his finest so far. Although it is almost 800 pages long, reading it felt like savouring an exquisite dish with a whole palet of flavours and scents.

The basic idea behind the novel is that each individual responds in his or her own unique way to the expression of a certain feeling, in this case: love. But love, being a positive feeling, does not necessarily and always entail the most positive of consequences.

I fear that some readers may find the message 'too soft' or 'irrealistic' or 'far-fetched' or whatever, but, for once, I do not care. I feel that I need books like this to keep me going, to keep faith, to continue to love and cherish others in spite of all the negativism in the world.

Ma io volevo il lieto fine per tutti, anche per i personaggi più demenziali. Ammetto che mi sarei fermata volentieri a metà, al "vissero tutti felici e contenti". Tuttavia Schmitt, da bravo narratore dello spirito umano, con la scusa di esplorare l'amore e il sesso in place D'Arezzo ci declina i vari modi con cui le persone si ingegnano a rendersi infelici.
Prima di tutto l'ambientazione: la piazza è una delle più belle del Belgio, enfatizzata dalla presenza di pappagalli e cocorite liberate decenni prima da un collezionista. I volatili si sono ambientati e riprodotti, ed ora la loro vita rumorosa e promiscua serve da paragone a quella degli abitanti.
I residenti sono persone importanti, facoltose. Si va dal commissario europeo che ambisce a diventare primo ministro del Belgio al direttore del quotidiano più diffuso, dalla famiglia del banchiere al romanziere di fama mondiale. Un tocco autobiografico, quest'ultimo? Certo non è difficile appore facce di contemporanei alle descrizioni dei personaggi, prima fra tutte Dita von Teese. E il politico con la passione per ogni gonnella, la cui carriera viene compromessa dalla sua dedizione al sesso? Mi verrebbe in mente un altro nome, poco belga...
Schmitt analizza tutte le sfaccettature della sessualità contemporanea, ma non è mai volgare. Abbiamo l'affermata coppia gay e le due lesbiche assai più discrete. Il giovane asessuato e gli scambisti, un po' di sadomaso e l'amore (alla fine) romantico di un paio di teenager.
Il mio preferito è il giardiniere, Hyppolite. E' l'unico a non farsi le proverbiali menate, a parte qualche sbuffo in cui si crede troppo poco intelligente per piacere alla compagna. Io invece ritengo che l'affrontare criticamente il proprio bagaglio culturale sia proprio indice di intelligenza. Ha un che di socratico: nel momento in cui so di non sapere ho anche lo stimolo ad istruirmi. Se credo di conoscere tutto difficilmente farò passi avanti.

Come sempre il romanzo si legge senza fatica, nonostante la mole. Anche se so di ripetermi non posso evitare di parlare della leggerezza con cui Schmitt si insinua nella vita dei personaggi. Nonostante ci siano molti protagonisti, l'impostazione del romanzo rende facile seguirne le vicende. Non sarà il mio preferito, ma è una storia che potrebbe contribuire a far apprezzare di più Schmitt in Italia. Pensateci, per i prossimi regali di natale.

„Папагалите от площад Арецо” – наистина не знам откъде да започна. Дълго чакана книга, започната с огромни, почти непоколебими очаквания за литературно пиршество. Авторът, корицата, обемът, анотацията – всичко говореше за тази посока. Обаче нещата не се оказаха точно такива. На първи план романът може да бъде описан с две думи – първата е много, втората е секс. Той просто извира от всяка дума, от всяка сричка, че дори и шпациите тук са сладострастни. Както с всичко прекалено обаче и в „Папагалите” идва момент на тежко пренасищане. Ама толкова тежко, че дори не искаш да се определяш към кой пол принадлежиш.

Както винаги при Шмит разбира се романът е многопластов, зад масовия секс, двойки, тройки, гангбанг (това не беше дори обяснено в романа, все пак не всеки знае терминологията на порно сайтовете;) )прозира една неудовлетвореност на героите, едно неистово компенисиране на липси, един екстремизъм до болка само и само да не станат част от обикновения буржоазен живот. А развратният политик донякъде ми напомняше на видния евро функционер от близкото минало Доминик Строс-Кан.

За съжлаение цялостното ми впечатление от романа не е чак толкова позитивно. Мъчно ми е, че най-дебелата книга на моя любимец Шмит, до която съм се докосвала, е за мен лично най-слабата му. Да, разбира се че може да пише, да без проблем прави една антология на секса и любовта, но всичко е прекалено разтеглено, героите са адски много и никой не те трогва (може би е умишлено така) и в крайна сметка основната идея, няма нищо общо с онези великолепни творби от цикъла „Кръговрат на незримото”, които ме привързаха безвъзрватно към автора. За фенове на Шмит бих я препоръчала, но ако говорим за първо запознанство с автора – твърдо не.

Through this book, Schmitt explores the multiple facets of love, starting from a simple yet intriguing plot: numerous social figures getting the same anonymous love note, transforming their monotonous stereotypical perfect relationship into an exploration of their fantasies and burning desires. From closeted homosexuals to a woman hating her body image, a pedophile, a perverted politician, a mother that doesn't know how to love her daughter, an asexual man in denial, a polygamous relationship, genetic diseases and family hatred, Schmitt penned the realities of today's society that desperately tries to keep what's "abnormal" behind shut doors, instead of raising awareness; leading to the horrendous problems that Schmitt depicts. But what really attracted me in this work were the insanely clever descriptions that I would avidly read and meditate multiple times, and the ongoing metaphor of the parrots, representing the raw and archaic sexual image of humans and their desires, accompanying the protagonists through their breakdowns. The only thing that bothered me was the density of the book, as it was hard to stay focused on every story written. All in all, Schmitt conquered my heart as I underwent an unforgettable one month adventure through the twisted ideas of the oppressed human mind.

This was one of the most beautifully written books I have read in years. It presented a rare slice of life among the residents of a relatively high-end neighborhood in Brussels that centered around a town square inhabited by exotic birds. Although you initially feel like you are reading individual short stories, if you take the time to sit with the book, the stories begin to connect to each other along with the birds who inhabit the trees in their town square, resulting in a magical experience for the reader. You could actually feel and hear these noisy birds taking part in and reflecting back the lives of the fascinating residents whose unique life experiences became part of your life. It is rare that you come away from such a complex book feeling so satified and engaged. Schmitt paints three dimensional portraits of his characters with words. You truly feel as if you have met these people and understand their lives and their motivations. A tour de'force indeed. I look forward to reading more of his books in the future.

Alive with passion and sensuality! Schmitt gives a detailed account of contemporary relationships, insisting on their lushing sexual practices. Beneath the surface, there is an acute feeling of emptiness, loneliness and desperation, pushing some the characters to extremes such as rape or suicide.

La lettura è scorrevole, però penso che Schmitt avrebbe potuto snocciolare l 'enigma dei biglietti misteriosi in molte meno pagine; invece si attarda e si crogiola nella promiscuità delle preferenze sessuali dei protagonisti, che poi francamente mi sembrano anche inverosimili. O io sono fuori dal mondo, o i personaggi hanno una attività sessuale da elefanti! Schmitt prende a campione per questo libro gli abitanti di una piazza di Buxelles, i quali ricevono tutti il medesimo biglietto d'amore che modificherà, nel bene o nel male le loro esistenze. Ci sono coppie che si amano, ma lui, appena può, si fa segretamente trastullare da aitanti giovanotti e lei ha apertamente una amante donna; oppure coppie di scambisti con preferenze sadomaso; donne sole con amori immaginari e portiera insaziabile di sesso; coppie gay e adolescenti in perenne conflitto. Pochi i personaggi davvero simpatici, forse l'unico che mi ha trasmesso un po’ di tenerezza è Ludovico, detto Ludo...
Insomma lettura scorrevole, ma niente di speciale; da leggere, magari, durante le vacanze sotto l’ombrellone, tanto per lasciarsi andare a qualche sorrisino amaro sulla fragilità dei rapporti d’amore e umani in generale.

La seule raison pour laquelle je n'ai pas mis 5 etoiles c'est qu'il y a beaucoup trop de characteres. Il y a eu des moments ou il fallait revenir en arriere pour se rappeler qui est telle ou telle personne. Pourtant si maintenant j'ai le choix d'eliminer quelques uns, je ne le ferais pas! C'est trop tard car j'y suis deja trop attachee! Ils sont tellement bien decrits et analyses qu'il m'a parut que l'auteur est psychologue, sociologue, anthropologue et philosophe tout en meme temps. Il connait la nature humaine jusqu'au bout. Il immerse la sexualite dans le bain de la realite et du quotidien. Fantasmes, desirs, et orientations sexuelles se manifestent a travers le pere de famille, la veuve, le libertain, l'artiste, l'adolescent et beaucoup d'autres personnages. Eric-Emmanuel est doue d'une perspicacite que j'ai rarement vue.

This is a tour de force. No wonder it is called #thecarouselofdesire. Originally I was sucked into this book by the cover because I thought it was some 1930s extravaganza. It is not. The only complaint is that it is quite long (645 pages)and there are too many characters which keep getting added as the book goes on.
They are all rich.
They are all rich and stylish and having sex.
They are all rich and stylish and French and having sex. They also have nice food.
An enjoyable and whimsical novel of the feasts of love. I especially liked the character of the parrot called Copernicus who repeats the name of the woman’s lover in front of her husband and he now keeps asking who it is that the parrot regularly mentions. It is a candid and farcical side effect of erotic fantasies. Very European. Vive l’amour!

Не бях чел роман с толкова много герои. В един момент престанах да следя кой кой е, но нещата плавно се навързаха.
Всъщност това не е роман в точния смисъл на думата. Авторът рисува един свят, в който има разнообразни двойки и екземпляри и ни оставя да живеем в него и сами да решаваме кой е прав и какво ще се случи.
В романа има много секс, много любов (най-вече при папагалите) и най-различни човешки отношения. Всъщност нормални хора в тази книга няма, но някак си никой не съди другите за начина им на живот.

I loved this. I loved every part of this book. This is an absolutely wonderful love letter to sex positivity. So many different kinds of sexuality and relationships, and no one is vilified (except for the rapist, and deservedly so) or ends in some sort of tragedy that befits the "crime" of their sexual "deviancy." This is a book of people loving people in all varieties, of people finding out who they are and what they want out of life. Such a celebration of love and sex, what an affirmation of life. A phenomenal and beautiful book.

Was a bit disappointed by this one. As almost every comment below says, it was a good idea but the execution is not as good as it could have been. There's a lot (read: too much) of characters, and one of them looks so much like Dominique Strauss-Kahn (it was hopefully meant this way) that it is disturbing, and doesn't serve the story the way it could have. This book feels like a lot of "could have".

Easy to read book about upper class living in expensive area. Is mostly about their sexual life.
Is a pity that all book is not like 2 last pages which I found well write.
