Lake Superior, 1880 Tressa Danell is finished with men—from the wastrel who left her a widow, to the smelly trapper who keeps proposing, to the banker who wants to repossess her bakery. Every hour is spent working to pay off her late husband’s debt and keep a roof over her son’s head, though it’s doubtful she can do both for very long. But one thing’s certain—she’ll never be beholden to a man again.
Tired of living in a small town that blames him for actions his father committed ten years ago, Mac Oakton is scheduled to leave Eagle Harbor. So why does the pretty widow at the bakery keep tugging at his heart? He can’t get involved in her predicament when he’ll only be around for two more weeks.
But when Tressa’s burdens overwhelm her, they both face a decision. Can Mac set his own plans aside to help? And can Tressa accept his support if that means giving up her independence ... and being obligated to a man again?
Naomi Rawlings is the author of historical Christian novels, including the Amazon bestselling Eagle Harbor Series. While she'd love to claim she spends her days huddled in front of her computer vigorously typing, in reality, she spends her time homeschooling, cleaning, picking up, and pretending like her house isn't in a constant state of chaos. She lives with her husband and three children in Michigan's rugged Upper Peninsula, along the southern shore of Lake Superior where they get 200 inches of snow every year, and where people still grow their own vegetables and cut down their own firewood--just like in the historical novels she writes.
. The story takes place in a small town located on the edge of Lake Superior. It held well-defined characters, a progressive plot line, dramatic action, judgemental attitudes, heroic romance, and some mystery. This was a well-developed, clean and wholesome historical romance located in Lake Superior that lends an ear to scriptures, but doesn't hit you over the head with them.
Being mistreated by the majority of people in this town because of someone else's shortcomings makes life difficult for the three main characters, who struggled to survive. They were presented with external challenges and internal doubts but were able to work together to attain a happy solution. Those judgmental townspeople were narrow-minded with unforgiving natures which is sad, ominous, and downright pathetic.
This was the introductory installment of this historical Christian book and was an enjoyable tale based on the complexity of love, faith, and enduring strength.
This book is able to stand on its own, but if you read them in order, you will be more familiar with some of the characters that carry over. Each story does include its own H.E.A., which is always a good way to conclude a fictional adventure. .
In this first book in Naomi Rawlings's Eagle Harbor Series, the reader is set down in beautiful but dangerous Eagle Harbor, Michigan, where strength and desperation clash like the storms that rage on the lake. I was immediately drawn into the lives of Tressa and her son, who are so admirably trying to make their way; and charmed by the hero who only wants to help, though he still has demons of his own to fight.
A romance to make your heart pound, but laced with God's truth and the power of family and forgiveness, Love's Unfading Light is a fabulous story and the start of a wonderful series!
Reread 2022: I’ve been meaning to revisit Eagle Harbor & this time my experience felt different. This was a quick, easy listen. I will say that this time around I wasn’t quite impressed with the story. I love the characters Naomi creates in this series but I have to say this story was lacking in development. (the romance felt underdeveloped & a bit too cheesy for me this time). If this would have been my first time reading this book I may not have continued the series- but knowing I like other stories in the series better, I would still say worth the read.
Naomi weaves Bible verses & faith themes very naturally throughout the book. If someone is looking for a very light, easy read with strong Christian elements then this is for you. It reminds me of some older Jody Hedlund novels.
2018: I so enjoyed reading my first novel by Naomi. I do not always have the patience to start a series with a lot of new characters, but I enjoyed meeting all of them and her setting the stage of Eagle Harbor. The love story was very sweet and the book had a very steady pace. I can't wait to read Elijah's story in the second book!... On another note, I really wish the cover model didn't have such heavy make-up. Haha.
I really enjoyed Mac and Tressa’s story—I love good love stories where it looks like the couple just can’t get together, especially when the hero is besotted. Makes me cheer for them all the more. And the setting on Lake Superior was really well done, I felt like I was there, especially out during the rescue scene, in the lighthouse and the beach, just well done. And there’s all kinds of characters to love and hate—Looking forward to reading the next one!
Mercy, but the townspeople got my dander up from the get go. I have never come across so many narrow-minded, sanctimonious, grudge-holding, unforgiving, judgemental people in one book! I was fuming on Tressa's behalf the whole way through the read. There's something very energizing about being righteously indignant for a sustained period of time. LOL
Tressa's future looks beyond bleak. Overwhelming odds keep pummeling her down. Just when you think it can't get worse it does! Mac is a bright beacon on her horizon. (pun intended since he's a lighthouse keeper.) His gallant and earnest desire to help Tressa is so endearing. Unfortunately, Tressa doesn't think so. But she can't always resist his charm which results in some lovely playful and humorous scenes.
Rawlins expertly weaves strong inspirational threads amidst the angst and drama. Mac comes to grips with his past and searches for God's hand in his future while Tressa struggles to believe in her worth as a daughter of a Heavenly Father. Both touched my reader's heart without the message feeling preachy or forced. Definitely deepened the read and left me with lots to think -- and pray -- about.
A delightful start to a promising new series.
My thanks to the author for providing me with a review copy of this book.
Tressa was the widow of a horrible man who was a cheat, a liar, and owed a considerable amount of money throughout the town. He died in a mining accident leaving her with nothing but debt.
Mac was the son of a horrible man who swindled about half of the town and died when Mac was quite young. The town-folk unfairly held his father's actions against Mac a very long time.
So here were two people who had to show the town that the legacy their next of kin left them was not who they really were. Poor Tressa felt the obligation to pay off her husband’s debts, even though they were made without her knowledge. To keep herself and her son from starving she started a baking business which no one would patronize because of the debts her husband incurred with nearly anyone who walked into the shop.
Mac understood Tressa, but she'd been treated poorly by so many people, she couldn’t trust his understanding nor concern.
The rest of the story was about how Mac broke down her walls by just showing her his trustworthiness and affection.
Well written. I like this author.

I have just added a new favorite author to my growing list. This easy-to-read historical romance was filled with the trials, tribulations, and sweetness of the time period in which it was placed. It's the 1880's and women have no rights and widowed women even less.
Married to a scalawag miner due to the death of her father, Tressa is then left a widow when her husband dies after 10 years of marriage leaving her with a 10 year old son. Not only is she left with just her son and the bakery she owns, but he also leaves her with a pile of debts from gambling, purchases and procuring wild women. The townspeople look down on Tressa due to the man she was married to and the debts he left. Now she's been told the debts are hers. Mac Oakton is beset by his own problems as the son of the man who scammed the entire community.
Both of these characters were so richly developed and so real. Each was dealing with a past that they didn't think they could outrun or outlive. Yet, in turn, each of them was so warmhearted and giving when it came to their friends and neighbors. The touches of humor that Rawlings included added to the sweet feel of this story. I also liked that the romance was sweetly developed without being the focus of the book, and faith is threaded throughout the storyline. As the first book in the Eagle Harbor series, it definitely leaves you with an invitation to discover what happens next to the town of Eagle Harbor in Book 2.
FAVORITE QUOTES: "The Lord has been good to us today, and there's no reason not to share His blessings."
"God paid a bigger debt for you than what I did today, and that's truly something you can never repay." "God paid
Uuugh! I'm 12 chapters in and I am so DONE! The evil, ugliness and despair far outweighs the very minimal moments of contentment. I can't claim enjoyment or diversion because I only feel anxiety for poor, widowed Tressa. At 15 she was forced to choose marriage to a scoundrel or work in a brothel. At 25 he's dead and has cheated nearly everyone in the small seaside village who all come to her to claim their pound of flesh. There are a few exceptions including Mac, the lighthouse keeper, who is obviously the love interest, but who cares! I feel like throwing up every time some new jerk shows up to belittle, humiliate and step on top of this sweet young mother. There are others also obviously under the thumb of a handful of rich businessmen, which does no favors for pulling this book out of my negative opinion.
Unfortunately I purchased the entire series. I will be deleting it.
All opinions are mine alone without expectation or compensation.
For me, it was difficult at first to get into. A lot of different people & information was written right out of the gate. Very hard for me to figure out what was going on at first! But I was determined to read the book as it really did sound like a good one. So glad I persevered! I figured once I got into the story that everything would fall into place & it did. The first time meeting Tressa, I felt sorry for her as she was being proposed to by a old trapper, and a very persistent one at that! She's desperately trying to keep her bakery afloat after her husband died & take care of her young son Colin. The more I learned about her the more I felt like I could befriend her! She's one tough cookie (no pun intended)! She's also trying to overcome the bad reputation she has due to her late husband's indiscretions. And to do it her way! Mac is a delightful character! Strong but tenderhearted, God fearing, loyal & steady, reliable & takes young Colin under his wing. His friend & him are buying a shipyard down on Lake Huron, so he's only staying long enough in Eagle Harbor until a replacement lighthouse worker comes. We find out soon enough that God has other plans for both Tressa & Mac! The resounding theme for me was this; the unconditional love & redemption God has for each of us! He took our sins upon himself just as Mac was willing to take Tressa's debts upon himself so that she could be redeemed in the eyes of the town! Why? Because He loves us that much...just as Mac finally realized he loved Tressa that much too! What a wonderful, heartwarming story this turned out to be! I can't wait for the second one to find out more about Mac's friend Elijah. Noami did a great job in fleshing out her characters & plunking us right in the middle of Eagle Harbor MI. A thoroughly enjoyable book with a happy ending & a few twists and turns to keep it fun! I hope you pick this up to read!
I was given a complimentary digital copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
A LIFE FULL OF STRAWBERRY PIES AND SUNSHINE Tressa Danell has had a hard and bitter life. Losing her mother early in life, her father when she was 15 and forced into accepting a marriage immediately to Otis Danell, rather than being forced to work in a brothel. Otis is nothing but a low-life scoundrel, cheating husband, swindling people out of money and when dying in a logging accident leaving debts owed everywhere. Mac Oakton has lived with people resenting him for the money his father swindled from neighbors on a fictitious copper mine and deserting town and his 10 year old son. Mac was blessed to be taken in by Hiram and raised along with his children and taught God's word. Mac does his best to share God's love and forgiveness with Tressa, but she has hardened her heart to God's love and greatest gift, His only son. This story has anger, bitterness, deceit, betrayal, a town that is cruel and unforgiving, but also shares true love, sacrifice, acceptance, and the proof of being Christ like. It is not a preachy story, but one of enlightenment of God's love and grace and a man's proof of unselfish love.
Tressa and Mac's story is very well written. Both of them are fighting to seek restitution for something they didn't do, yet feel responsible for and are blamed for by the town. a beautifully written setting along Lake Superior with a lighthouse and danger among the lake the author writes the scenes as if you were there. Mac has his future all laid out just the way he wants it to be. Tressa is fighting day by day to protect her son and keep a roof over their heads. Mac is compelled to help her, her Tressa doesn't want a man's help. Can God get thru to either of them to show them His perfect plan for their lives? I really enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down, and was eager to resume reading when I did have to pause for a bit. I am looking forward to book 2 in this series.
This is a great Christian love story with a bit of everything. I love how the author, Naomi Rawlings, not only gave us a clear picture of Eagle Harbour community, the lighthouse, and the surrounding waters, but a very comprehensive picture of most of the occupants of the town. The widow Tressa and her young son, Colin, are likable and their story will touch your heart. Mac Oakton, who returns to the town later in the story, is the kind of man you can imagine putting his coat down to prevent a lady from walking in water, but also a man full of fun and rowdy in many ways. He is a man one can depend on to do the right thing. His friend, Elijah, is also a very lovable character. The storyline and plot actually kind of reminded me of "Anne of Green Gables" in a more grown up setting and various people in the community could be related to some of the characters in the Green Gables community. There is even a Gilbert in the story who, I understand, from the author's comments, will appear more later in the series.
This is the first book I have read by Naomi Rawlings and I certainly hope to read more. I believe I received this ebook free as a promotional giveaway, and I certainly appreciate it. It is a clean, well-written and edited story which will keep you guessing right up to the end. Great job, Naomi Rawlings!
Tressa's story is one of strength and fortitude in the face of heartache and loss. Naomi writes with a deep well of feeling and passion and you feel that in the characters of this story. I enjoyed the playful tender moments as well as the deeper more thought provoking ones.
For me, the deeper theme of Tressa's story was her struggle not only with her own self-worth as her neighbors saw her but her need to understand who she was to God. This story brings a powerful reminder to us all that we were each bought with a price. One that we can never repay. We are all worthy, regardless of how the world sees us.
The secondary characters are likewise engaging and I am looking forward to reading more of the Eagle Harbor series and especially reading Victoria's story!
(I purchased this book from amazon. The thoughts and opinions are my own)
Hmm, this was a good read! It had a light mystery, sweet romance, true-to-life small town personalities 😜, & it made me want to go to a Lake Superior lighthouse 😊 But realistically, if Tressa was married to a mean man from age 15 to 26 & he’s only been dead for 3 mos, I doubt she would be fully ready to marry like she was at the end of the book. It felt rushed, like they need to marry right away instead of taking things slow. 🤷♀️
What a wonderful story of heartfelt love, forgiveness, Christian insights and pure enjoyment for the reader. I could relate to Tresses money problems, her young son's issues with bullying and I really loved Mac, tender, fun-loving and hard working. Wonderful reading for everybody!
This is a 3+ star rating. I enjoyed this simple story of determination, forgiveness, fortitude, romance, and all the drama that comes from a small town in the 1880's. I love this time period, and I'm drawn to lighthouse stories.
Oh my... What a quandry the main character was left in when her husband died. She was left to take care of her son and herself in a town that was not understanding......
This is an interesting read. It certainly is a time period where women were still being taken for granted and shouldering a lot of thankless responsibility. There are multiple and well written interesting characters that I'm sure make appearances in the others books in the series. I actually picked the book because of the lighthouse on the cover and the fact that the main male character, Mac Oakton, is a lighthouse keeper. I wouldn't have minded it if there was more about the lighthouse etc. but no matter. The author did an excellent job of making me 'feel' the terrible pressure the main female character, Tressa Danell was under. (I had an aunt named Tressie so it was neat to see a similar name.) This is an inspiring story. I noticed someone was upset with how the female was being burdened with the dead husband's financial mess. This kind of thing really did happen even into the 1970's. So it was realistic to me. I enjoyed the character of both people who felt they were looked down upon the community because of what their family members had done. Even though Mac and Tressa felt that way, both instantly were ready to help others. To me, this book is an invitation to read the rest of the series and I plan to.
Book Review: MY RATING: FOUR STARS * * * * -- I really liked this book! This historical romance is set in the Lake Superior region in 1880. The heroine, Tressa Dannell, is recently widowed with a ten-year-old son, Colin. She runs her own bakery, but is drowning in debt thanks to her ne'er-do-well, deceased husband, Otis. From the beginning of the story challenges, trials and tribulations are piled upon Tressa. I honestly wondered if and when the woman was going to get a break! Her son, Colin, is an active boy who is very compassionate about and sensitive to his mother's plights. He does odd jobs such as sweeping out the store and cleaning up litter to earn quarters which he promptly turns over to his mother to help with the expenses. I really enjoyed this character and his involvement in throughout the story. The hero, Mac Oakton, appears early on in the story. On many occasions he 'saves the day' for Tressa and Colin. There are many humorous scenes involving this couple such as the food fight involving one of Tressa's handmade strawberry pies. Mac and Tressa each have a special friend, Elijah and Jessalyn, respectively, with whom they share a warm rapport and trusting relationship. I felt the final chapter of the book was especially strong in defining the depth of Tressa's and Mac's feelings for one another and the future of their relationship. The author has done a fine job of taking us back in time to get a glimpse at the lives of the citizens of Eagle Harbor, Michigan, in 1880. I recommend this book to fans of historical romance and Christian fiction. NOTE FROM BLOGGER: The author provided me with a PDF copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation for posting this review here or anywhere else. * * * * * * * * *
Love’s Unfading Light is book one in the Eagle Harbor series. I actually read book two first. After reading book two, I really wanted to know Tressa and Mac’s back story. And what a back story it is!
I am really enjoying this series and the deep characters in these books. Tressa is such a complicated woman. She is strong, stubborn, and has an unending devotion to her son. Although she is a widowed mother, she is still very young and is scared of ever being under a man’s control again. And she doesn’t know how she will ever make it out from under her dead husband’s debts.
Mac has his own issues to deal with. There are some who distrust him because of his father. There are others who recognize the honorable man he is. But Mac has his sights set on getting out of Eagle Harbor and starting over.
Both of these characters were wonderful! I liked Tressa for her strength, yet also felt for her in her insecurities. Even in book two, Tressa’s insecurities follow her and cause some issues in her marriage. Mac was a great character! I loved the way he tried to take care of Tressa and her son throughout the story. He also had a great sense of humor. He was just an all around honorable guy.
Another thing I enjoyed in both books one and two was that the reader gets to know the main characters, but also meets and connects with a few side characters who have interesting stories of their own. It makes this town feel realistic and makes me want to read more about the many people I have met.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Love’s Unfading Light is a captivating tale of history and romance! Naomi Rawlings paints a vivid picture of life in Eagle Harbor, Michigan, bringing the story and its characters to life. My heart ached for Tressa Danell and her struggles, as it did for Mac Oakton and the scrutiny he faced. I loved these special characters and their emotional and spiritual journeys!
Love’s Unfading Light is a compelling story and a highly recommended read for fans of historical romance. I can’t wait for the next book in the Eagle Harbor series!
A complimentary copy of Love’s Unfading Light was provided to me by the author. I appreciate the opportunity to read this story and offer my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were real with real issues. Both main characters had to learn to forgive themselves before they could fully accept the friendship and forgiveness of others. This is a Christian romance but not too preachy- if anything I would have liked to see Tressa come to a fuller understanding of God's love for her, though I think it's understood that she does thru Mac's example. In general, this is a very good book. I just wanted it to go a little deeper and last a little longer. I really hope we get a glimpse of how this couple is doing in the books that follow. Really looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
This was my first book to read by Author Naomi Rawlings and I was not disappointed. From the beginning, I was captivated by Love's Unfading Light. I love the details and descriptions, because it makes the storyline feel real. The author does excellent in portraying her characters. I enjoyed reading Love's Unfading Light by Naomi Rawlings and rate it as a fantastic book. I am delighted to have found a new author to read. Love's Unfading Light is Book One in the Eagle Harbor series. I'm looking forward to Book Two in this series.
I received a complimentary copy from the author in exchange for my honest review. This review is one hundred percent my opinion.
I innocently started this novel and became addicted to the deep characters and beautifully woven story of Love's Unfading Light, the first of the Eagle Harbor books. Tressa Danell and her son find themselves in an impossible bind with no way out. Mac Oakton, an unlikely savior jokes his way into Tressa's bakery and can't stay away from her tasty pastries and pies. One pie lands on his face and away goes this delectable, charming novel. I highly recommend book one of the Eagle Harbor series by Naomi Rawlings
Bleh! I hate how romance is built on the leading man rescuing the leading lady from all sorts of calamity. What can be more romantic than a good man falling in love with a strong woman who can manage her own affairs and if not, ask for help and work on the problem together? I cringed most of the way through this book, and will not be reading any more by this author.
It got two stars because I liked some of the characters that were NOT the main character.
I really enjoyed this story of Mac and Tressa. I loved the setting of Lake Superior. I enjoyed how the author compared God's love with the light of the lighthouse. I enjoyed Naomi Rawlings' writing style, of how she detailed what the characters were feeling inside. It is definitely a book I will recommend to others. I can't wait for Book 2 in this Eagle Harbor series to come out.
