Summer Lane has done it again with her newest novella addition to the Zero trilogy a companion series to the Collapse series in which she has created a magnificently colorful and realistic apocalyptic society. Day One picks up immediately following the events of Day Zero and takes place sometime before State of Alliance. Your are once again following Elle Costa, this time it's as she begins the daunting task of searching for and attempting to rescue her newly acquired friends Jay, Georgia and Flash. Once again I was struck with the strength of this young female character and her ability to take charge and survive at any cost. Much like Cassidy, Elle never even thinks of giving up as an option, she knows that this life may suck, but it's the only one she's got, and that is worth fighting for. Elle is however different from Cassidy, because she is more selfish and her only real fight is for herself and the few people she cares for, she doesn't give a shit about the bigger picture she just wants to survive today long enough to see tomorrow, there is something relatable about that, something I haven't felt in Cassie's story since like the second installment (not to say I don't love Cassie and Chris cause I totally do) Having read State of Alliance already I loved how Ms. Lane tied everything in to the ongoing storyline, and I am intrigued by the mysterious cliff hanger epilogue she threw in to keep me guessing. I love this world, I feel like there is an element of realism here that I have never felt in an apocalyptic environment before, like somehow Summer Lane knows how the end will come to this "land of the free" we call our home and she is writing these books to warn us all and give us insight from the future or something. That may be totally crazy and irrational but I'm hooked non the less. All I can really say is hurry up and release State of Vengeance already cause this novella was too short to hold me over for long.

Day One is a fast-paced novella, just like Day Zero, the first book in this series. The story continues the travels of Elle Costas as she searches for her recently-acquired friends and also makes new friends along the way.

When you read the book, you will be amazed at the strength and perseverance of Elle as she moves toward and away from trouble. (Although, she seems to always be moving towards trouble in post-apocalyptic California. She can never really escape trouble.) You will will admire her drive and dedication, and you might forget she's just fifteen years old.

If you haven't picked up Day One, please do. But you'll have to read Day Zero first. It's okay though; you won't be disappointed.

Summer does it again

I have thoroughly enjoyed learning of the world after the EMP through the eyes of Elle. Because not much of her back story was given in The Collapse Series, I had a difficult time deciding whether or not I could trust her. The Zero Trilogy gives you all the insight you need as to why she's the way she is. Her and Cassidy are very much alike and I've enjoyed learning about those similarities.

Now...what am I going to do waiting for the next installments of each series??.

Summer does a great job of developing her new set of characters. You may love them, you may hate them, but they leap off of the paper and are real once you read about them. Day One does not disappoint. It answers questions left dangling in previous books and begs for deeper dives in new situational pools. I have a new favorite character in Ms. Lane’s books and his name starts with a ‘B’. (No spoiler here) I would recommend the Zero Trilogy as time well spent.

Like Elle and her new friend

Elle rescues her friends, the ungrateful, naive, know it all friends who when they first met her begged her to help them in their desperate state. She did. She does. But she is safest on her own, now with her new companion.
Again, well written, characters you care about, and the meeting with Chris Young and Cassidy Hart looms. I can't wait to see these characters meet and merge alliances.

Wow! Can't even imagine what Elle has gone through in a few short months! I grew up in LA so this is all familiar territory to me too. Love the fact that she gained her empathy and compassion back when she met the kids. And absolutely adore Bravo!

Easy reading

The story flows, descriptive without being over done. Well written. Zero flows to one perfectly. You won’t want to put it down, but if you have to easy to pick up and get right back into the book.

This was the second in the Elle chronicles and sees the introduction of one of the best characters in the entire Collapse Saga - Bravo.
The continuation picks up with Elle on a desperate chase for her friends, and this is yet another gruelling book of trials and some serious personal growth for our main Female Hero.
I'm not going to go into the story too much, so I don’t give it away, but needless to say that Summer Lane does not let up on Elle in the 2nd part of the series. The only good thing for Elle as I mentioned, is Bravo.
Bravo is an ex-demolition dog, so well trained, but now left for dead by his owner. Elle manages to get a few simple commands from Bravos dying master, and they instantly bond. And so begins a wonderful relationship, one I think will endure into other stories beyond ‘The Zero Trilogy’ (If we are really lucky!! )
As with ALL her stories Summer Lane has again delivered a brilliant storyline that gives you no room to breathe. It's on from the very start, right through to the very end.
As with the first book, Elle is still an amazing character, strong and capable, and very self-sufficient. Of course, she had started to grow in the first book – realising that there was more to life than just survival, that there was also the need for others and with this came the responsibility to care for them as well.
As with all of Her work, Summer continues to write brilliant characters, with non-stop storylines that you just can’t put down.

The Book
After the apocalypse and escaping Los Angeles, Elle is stranded alone in California when the Slaver kidnaps her friends. She determines to rescue them.

My Thoughts
I had read Day Zero by Summer last year. After watching the movie, “The Fifth Wave,” I again became interesting in dystopian stories. I picked up Day One, the continuing saga of Elle and the apocalypse, and jumped into the world after the unthinkable happens.

After book one, Elle has changed and has become tougher as she shifts into survival mode. The question, “What would I do if I were faced with destruction?” stays with me as I read Day One.
I first became a fan of dystopian stories through Summer’s first book-Day Zero. Another book in this genre that’s really good is Rachelle Dekker’s Choosing.

A character shines the brightest when faced with the darkest moments. Summer paints a very dark picture but an alive spirit within a teenager.

The world is in chaos with no electricity or electronics. Nothing. Since the human spirit presses forward, hope shines in the midst of darkness.

I look forward to the next book.

In the desert you can remember your name..

The further adventures of Elle, in the apocalypse.
This is the second book, and in this one Elle is trying to find the friends she met in book one. They were captured and she tracks them through the Mojave.
Elle has some excellent survival skills, which is interesting, considering her privileged background.
The story could use some better proofreading, and I don't much care for the flashback method of telling the backstory, but it's fairly entertaining.
Results: an interesting post apocalyptic story, kind of short, and there's another 'book' you'll have to pay for if you want to read more.

Food for thought

Summer lane.... it's another homerun loved the series. i'm really looking forward to the next adventure I hope that you're just a fiction writer and not precognitive in any manner. It's pretty terrifying how vulnerable we really are. After I finished this I've started stocking up on dry goods and ammunition just in case.

I enjoyed the second book far more than the first because of how much personality each character develops throughout. This book mostly focuses on Elle and I loved seeing her develop as a character and her believing that there is still hope and good people in the world. I also adored Bravo and Elle's relationship because who doesn't love animals? Their bond is endless.

Fast but a goodread

My only wish..... that they had made Elle older. I can see here doing the things she does at a older person, I'm only saying a few years older ( not talking about making her in her 30's , just maybe18- 20 .( I'm not saying much a because I don't wanna give anything a away.)

Read this book in a day and it starts to tie in nicely with the collapse series. I feel that the story is too short. So when I finished I was left disappointed as opposed to waiting with eager anticipation for the next book.

Pretty stupid

More of a teenage story. Drags on and is really slow. It's NOT an end times book but a supergirl/i win at everything book. Not reading the rest of the series. Skimmed thru this one...waste of 99 cents!
