He was born to marry wealth. She was born to be invisible. But fate—and a magical wolf—have other plans.
Nicholas is the privileged heir to a powerful estate, with a future as carefully arranged as the marriage he’s expected to make. Mira is a commoner—the quiet, strange servant who disappears into the forest, returns with mysterious herbs, and keeps company with a magical wolf. To Nicholas, she’s nothing more than a witch in disguise, and when his father is poisoned, she’s the perfect suspect.
Determined to expose her, Nicholas sets out to prove her guilt. But when a hunting trip ends in disaster and leaves him wounded, it’s Mira who finds him, tends his wounds, and risks everything to bring him home.
As suspicions clash with undeniable truth, Nicholas begins to see the girl he thought he hated in a very different light. But with an arranged marriage on the horizon, a village quick to accuse, and a family name on the line, love between a nobleman and a servant is not just forbidden—it’s dangerous.
And the real murderer may still be closer than either of them realizes.

As someone who enjoys learning about plants and their medicinal benefits, I really liked Mira. She was very sweet and reminded me of Snow White at times with her kindness. She definitely made the book better and was a great main character who perseveres through hardships.
Nicholas on the other hand: he was absolutely horrible at first. I’m not a fan of the enemies-to-more romance trope, so I was a little leery about this book because of it. Nicholas was a terror to Mira for their entire lives, basically, and it took a good shock to realize how awful he has been to her. I liked the character development—especially because it was much needed for him—but I wish we could have seen some scenes leading up to his change with feeling a prick of guilt for his actions and mean comments to her. I think it would have been more natural then as I was questioning how they could even fall for each other.
Rather than a find-out-who-the-murderer-was kind of mystery, it was more of a get-evidence-of-the-murder kind of mystery. The answer seemed obvious to me, but I enjoyed the setting of a regency-like fantasy time-period. There’s magical creatures, but no magic per se. I would have liked a bit more in the faith content regard regarding the magical creatures—did the Creator make them for a special purpose? Or are they just animals to hunt like deer? I think there could have been more with the world-building, but for the page length of the story, I mostly enjoyed it.

Thank you to the author - for the ARC and for writing this book! This book was honestly a really fun read - I devoured it in a single day. Enemies to lovers is a weakness of mine and I enjoyed that it seemed that the main characters did seem to truly be enemies at the start. Nicholas is a piece of work at the beginning - props to Mira for being able to deal with him. Mira, our protagonist, is kind-hearted and courageous. I found myself really enjoying her character - she was inspiring in that she chose to be good above all and see the good in others. She may have been a so-called lowly servant on the outside, but on the inside, she was strong, smart, and resilient. The redemption arc between Nicholas and Mira was pretty cute - his apology seemed genuine and the way he treated her from then on was a lot more sincere. I just wish the ending didn’t feel so rushed between them. I would have liked to see more of them being happy together while tying up the loose ends. That being said, I’m happy they still got their HEA in the end. I feel like a lot of my complaints about the book stem from the simple fact that I wish the book was longer - but alas, it was only a novella. However, there was a bit more that I wish could have been explored. For example, the relationship between Henry Lockwood and Mira’s mother - I know the two were close but there still feels like there’s more to the story there. I also would have liked to know more about Elizabeth and her dysfunctional family. Additionally, I feel like there could have been a bit more development between Mira and Nicholas had the story been longer - not that their story wasn’t enticing, but rather, I simply want more of them. Another (irrelevant) comment, but I really thought at first that Valerian was going to end up being a shapeshifter - like human and wolf. I kept on expecting it at first then it never happened, but still - Valerian is an underrated character. I thought the whole dynamic with the wolf and Mira was pretty cute. My rambles aside, I still think it was a charming story, one fit for a rainy day. It definitely felt cozy to me - it was well done and well-written. I would definitely read a longer version of this story - and I will definitely read more from this author in the future!
I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really enjoyed this novella! It's a YA fantasy centered around a murder mystery in a regency setting, with an enemies-to-lovers romance and faith themes.
The world-building in this story was very intriguing; I loved the magical, guardian-like wolves and mysterious forest. I could honestly read a full-length novel about the forest and other creatures dwelling there, or even one about the wolves.
I also enjoyed the romance in this novella! I did not like Nicholas at all in the beginning of this book and actually stopped reading to double-check the description to make sure he really was the love interest. However, the author did an excellent job with his character development! The redemption arc Nicholas went through was well-done, and his growth by the end was satisfying to see.
Mira was also a great protagonist. She was intelligent and courageous, but I think what stood out to me most was her unwavering resolve to do the right thing. Her mindset under the circumstances she found herself in was impressive and commendable.
I do almost wish it was longer because there was more I would have liked to see in this world/story, but it was a great novella! I would definitely recommend this to YA readers, and I did enjoy the way faith themes were woven into the story.
ENGLISH:
Okay, finally a true enemies-to-lovers story! There was no attraction at first sight or justifications for mistreating each other. There was as much pure contempt as there was organic love after clear development. Even so, I feel the book was too short . A longer length could have benefited the characters' spontaneous evolution.
For example, themes like grief would have been better illustrated. The good thing is that it was the perfect book for my two-hour commute home without the internet.
Also, what I did like about the book was the use of magic as part of the atmosphere, rather than being fundamental to the plot. I also loved that the protagonist was steadfast in her cause and how the MMC showed genuine repentance in her return to the faith.
In conclusion, if you're looking for a murder mystery with magical creatures as friends and a bit of gunpowder in your story, this is your next read. Thanks for the arc!
What a fun story this is! I've read 1 other book by this author (under a different pen name) that was a murder mystery rom-com and I loved it. So, I was very excited when I recently learned she also writes in the fantasy genre. I couldn't wait to read this book and it did not disappoint! The author does a great job of seamlessly blending fantasy and mystery in a regency-style setting that made this book incredibly creative and interesting.
I loved that the focus of the story is a murder mystery, with a little bit of a "whodunit" feel to it, but the author also incorporates elements of fantasy and magic that make it very unique. The enemies-to-lovers romance in this book was sooooo lovely to read, and I really liked that it was a significant part of the story without overshadowing the murder mystery aspect of the plot. Cara Ruegg knows how to write just the right amount of suspense to keep you on your toes and at the edge of your seat! The main male character, Nicholas, has an incredible character arc throughout the story and that ended up being one of my favorite parts of the book. Lastly, I loved the overarching theme that truth, kindness, and love can overcome even the deepest societal and social class segregations and prejudices. This book kept me hooked on every page and I was so impressed with the author's clever and flawless fusion of mystery, fantasy, regency, and romance. I look forward to reading more of Cara Ruegg's books in the near future!

A Standalone in the Multi-Author series, Realms of Lurin.

I’m so happy I was able to be apart of Cara’s ARC team again! She did not disappoint in this Regency Fantasy Novella! I would’ve like more detail and just “more” in the story, but I realize that this is a more like a Novella so I understand the quick pacing of this book was crucial. I really liked the mystery and am proud of myself for figuring out who the murderer was before Mira finds out 😏😂 I also thought the wolf, Valerian was really cool! I pretty much loathed Nicholas until he realized how much of a jerk he was being; but I really liked Mira! She really had a tender and loving heart even though she herself hated Nicholas. Their romance was really sweet and very much a slow burn. And really their banter and Nicholas’s redemptive arc was so sweet.
I would totally recommend this Little YA Novella to anyone wanting to read an interesting murder mystery and a couple who were first enemies who hated each other and somehow becoming lovers in the end.
My rating: 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Petals and Poison is a captivating teenage to young YA fantasy that beautifully blends enemies-to-lovers romance with an engaging thread of murder and mystery. Set against the backdrop of an enchanted forest—and featuring a mysterious, protective magic wolf—the story feels immersive, atmospheric, and full of intrigue.
From the very beginning, the tension between Mira and Nicholas pulls you in, and watching their relationship evolve is both satisfying and heartfelt.
What truly stands out is the depth of the characters. Mira is an inspiring protagonist—steadfast, courageous, and unwavering in her faithfulness despite the challenges she faces. Nicholas, on the other hand, brings a compelling mix of humility and inner strength that makes his growth especially rewarding to witness.
Beyond the romance and suspense, the story explores powerful themes of redemption and forgiveness in a way that feels genuine and impactful. If you enjoy emotional character journeys wrapped in a magical, mysterious setting, this book is well worth your time. Highly recommend!
This was a fun read that was not what I expected, and I mean that in the best way! The book is a regency-inspired fantasy novella with a murder mystery plot and an enemies-to-lovers romance.
Things I liked: -Mira, the FMC: She is intelligent and clever, observant and cautious, caring, brave, and gracious. -Valerian, the magic wolf: He is just really cool (I do wish we had a little more of him in the story, just because he’s so cool!) -The murder mystery: I really enjoyed trying to solve the crime along with the MCs. It felt like I was watching a BBC cozy crime show! -The dual POVs: I’m grateful to have had the POV of Nicholas, as it helped me understand and believe in his redemption arc. -The redemption: I LOVE a good redemption in a story!
Overall, I enjoyed and would recommend this book. It was clean from any spice/explicit content (it is kisses only) or swearing. There are some mentions of physical violence but it is free of any overly descriptive gore.
Thank you to the author for the ARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and given willingly.
This is a cute little mystery! I love fantasy and murder mysteries, so combining the two is always a winning combination for me! I especially love when magical elements are involved in the mystery, which they were here.
I really liked Mira, but I did not like Nicholas at first. He acted really terrible and seemed to feel completely justified in doing so. He has some great character growth, but he does a complete 180 on his feelings for Mira, and I wish that part had happened a bit slower. Still, I suppose near death experiences may do that to a person. I really enjoyed his character growth and like who he is by the end of the book. Valerian was a fun character, and I really enjoyed the idea of magical wolves, and I'd love to know more about them!
The mystery was fun, and I thought the solution was well foreshadowed. I do wish there were more scenes of sleuthing and putting together clues because I really enjoy the snooping around parts of my mysteries.
Overall, it's definitely a quick, fun read, and I wish there was more!
What an intriguing story! This was full of surprises and twists up to the last chapters. I felt for Mira. Her life had become tumultuous and she was feeling lost. Mira was still trying to do what she knew was right, but the mysteries around the lord of the estate’s death put her in danger. I loved her connection with the woods and the magical creatures in it. Mira was very honorable, I was not sure how I felt about Nicholas at first. He was stubborn and a bit self-focused. He allowed his feelings to influence his choices and it led him into danger at different points. I appreciated his growth and how he started to have a better perspectives. The story was quick paced and it did feel fast at times, but it is a novella! I enjoyed the light murder mystery and adventure elements. It was also cool to see the magical elements and the way the story unfolded. This magical regency-inspired novella has some non-descriptive violence and only kisses. I received an ARC.
3.8 I enjoyed this story! Even though it's relatively short, you'll find an engaging murder mystery, an enchanted forest, characters with depth and romance. This story highlights aspects around forgiveness and redemption.
Mira is a strong and courageous character even though her circumstances, while life has made Nicholas cruel and selfish. There's tension between them but they are enemies. It was satisfying their relationship bloom and evolve regardless their different social status.
Even though I loved how Nicholas changed and his redemption arc to become a better person, I only hoped there would have been more development as I felt it came overnight. Also I'd have loved to know a bit more about the wolf and the forest.
* This is a closed-door romance * No language * Thanks the author for this E-ARC opportunity. All the opinions expressed are purely my own.
If you love regency vibes, murder mysteries, fantasy elements, and a protective wolf sidekick… this one might be for you 🐺
I flew through this novella in just a few hours and thought it was such a sweet, cozy read. The atmosphere was probably my favorite part — it felt like a blend of fantasy intrigue and regency charm with a fun mystery woven throughout.
Because it’s a novella, the romance moves pretty quickly, and I personally wished there had been a little more buildup and chemistry between the MMC and FMC before his feelings changed. But overall, I still thought it was a cute story and very well written for the shorter format.
Perfect for readers looking for: 🖤 Regency-inspired fantasy 🖤 Murder mystery elements 🖤 Fast-paced romance 🖤 Protective animal sidekicks 🖤 Cozy novella reads
This was a lovely story. I really enjoyed the mix of regency world and enchanted forest. I liked the tension between Mira and Nicholas. It was interesting to see them go from mutual indifference, to animosity, to forced proximity, to falling in love. The murder mystery plot added an intriguing layer to the story. As blame was cast and clues were uncovered, I was on the edge of my seat, waiting for Nicholas to finally see the truth. It was touching to see him get over his prejudice and look past the accusation against Mira once he got to know her better. This novella was the perfect combination of forbidden romance, cozy fantasy, regency vibes, and a villainous scheme.
Thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I really enjoyed this arc! The Realms of Lurin has so far been an amazing series! This book follows childhood enemies Mira and Nicholas. Mira is a really sweet and misunderstood character. I love her connection with the forest and Valerian. Nicholas was pretty immature at the beginning, but through the book he grows and realizes what is truly important. I also loved Christopher and how he knew they would get together from the start. He was such a fun addition to the characters. The slow progression of the romance was done really well, and I liked how they gradually fell in love instead of all at once. I really enjoyed reading this and am excited to see this series continue! Thank you to Cara E. Ruegg for this arc!
A quick to read mystery in a Regency inspired fantasy setting. The set up for the story in the first half (or so) was interesting but I did find the second half felt a little rushed. It would have been great to have a few more details of the setting and story explained, to see the character development and the romantic relationship evolve a little more gradually and for the culprit to have been a little less obvious all along (or maybe I was the only one waiting for a twist that never came that made the obvious killer not the killer). Still, it is a fun (though not always lighthearted) and imaginative quick read.
I received an ARC and voluntarily leave an honest review.
Perfect weekend read. I loved the murder mystery with a fantasy twist. Petals and Poison was just what I needed since I was in the mood for a mystery, but nothing heavy. This is a standalone story that is part of the multi-author Realms of Lurin series of fantasy novellas. The interesting storyline drew me in from the beginning. I felt an easy emotional connection to Mira. I liked Nicholas' growth. His inexcusable behaviour established the enemies angle and set the stage for his character arc.
I enjoyed the themes of love, resilience, and redemption. I especially appreciated seeing Mira wrestle with forgiveness, and Nicholas being determined to set things right. I also loved Mira's wolf companion. I wouldn't have minded if the book was 100 pages longer because I didn't want it to end.
Thanks to Cara E. Ruegg for allowing me to read an early copy.
Petals and Poison by Cara E Ruegg Nicholas is expected to marry well... if he can avoid getting murdered first... A fun little murder mystery! This one has regency vibes with a dash of fantasy. Our main characters, Nicholas and Mira, have been enemies since childhood. This is quite a short book, so Nicholas's turnaround is rather fast, but I think the author managed to pull it off. I was a little less sure about Mira actually liking him back. If it were a longer book that could have been fleshed out a bit more. I definitely liked the murder mystery aspect. Genre: Fantasy Standalone Favorite character: Mira (FMC) Favorite scene: the ladder and the apple tree
Received a copy from the author (all opinions are my own)
This was an interesting book. I liked the magical creatures and the medicinal knowledge. I liked the murder mystery. I almost didn’t figure out who it was. This is an enemies to lovers book, but in a weird way, they start off enemies and then through an act of saving his life after trying to convince him that his life was in danger in the first place, his heart softens and he finally believes that she’s truly on his side. This was a fun book to read. I enjoyed the characters. I enjoyed the storyline and if you like close door, Regency romances that are in a magical setting. This is a book for you.
I really enjoyed this book. It is a true enemies (since childhood) to lovers, murder mystery romance. I loved the theme of overcoming prejudices. There is no witchcraft in this book, FMC Mira is accused of it but does not practice witchcraft. Magical wolf protector/friend. The beginning of the book made it hard for me to believe the MMC was actually the right one. That's how good the enemies to lovers trope was. Nicholas' transformation and begging God for forgiveness is one of my favorite parts. They save each other!
I received this copy as a gift from the author, all opinions are my own.
I received this as an ARC so here is my honest review.
What is it with Cara and always writing books with such pretty covers? If I ever publish any of my writing, I want at least some of my covers to be as pretty.
I’ve been craving a fantasy lately, so this was almost exactly what I needed. My craving just wanted a wee bit more fantasy, though.
The magic wolf thing is cool. If you get bitten by one you get some sort of vision? Like, woah. But it wasn’t exactly clear on what the vision could be. Is it a vision of your future or a vision of your worst nightmare? Both? Or either one? I was a bit confused about that.
I was able to guess the murderer pretty easily, which is surprising ‘cause I’m not usually very good at figuring out mysteries. Since I had already figured out who the culprit was, I wasn’t as intrigued as I wish I was.
In my opinion, this was not the author’s best work, but I still did enjoy it. I’m always glad to read another Cara Ruegg book as her books are always clean and she and I share the same Faith. Plus, her books are underrated and deserve more publicity.
Talk about an emotional roller coaster! First Nicolas drives me crazy with how he treats Mira. Then after some beautiful character development, he sees the error of his ways. I also loved how much Mira payed attention to her environment and the people in it. And in doing so made numerous allies! If you love murder mysteries and regency novels give this book a look! Thank you Cara E. Ruegg for the opportunity to read an ARC of this story!
A short, sweet, enemies to lovers fantasy romance with Pride and Prejudice vibes. The plot was an intriguing mystery that honestly had me guessing until the very end. The romance was a little rushed, but this was a short tale, and it was mostly believable based on certain events. There is also a wolf companion which made a fun addition. Clean, with light kisses. There is also a faith element with the Creator and prayer book mentioned.
Do you like young YA that has a blend of enemies to lovers and engaging plot filled with murder and mystery? This book has the back group of an enchanted forest and mysterious magic.
The book is just oozes intrigue through the pages. You feel the tension between the main characters from the first couple pages and it pulls you to watch the relationship develop.
I really enjoyed this book! It’s a quick read, I finished it in one day. I loved the FMC and the wolf! The setting was also really neat and I could visualize it perfectly with the way the author described it. It was a good mystery story in a fantasy setting. It also was clean and had some faith themes that I enjoyed. As someone who loves natural remedies, I really appreciated that aspect of this book as well.
Like the first book in the Realm of Lurin series, it began slow to read. But as the chapters move on it became exciting especially after a murder took place. I couldnt put the book down after it. It became intrieging and wanted to know the end of the book. This is definitly a book I am gonna re-read again someday
Petals and Poison was a great enemies to lovers, clean adventure. Mira went through so much and still kept her strength and kindness. While Nicholas took a longer harder path to have a change of heart. This was well written and fun to read. I liked the mystery and intrigue. I did receive an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was a wonderful story that had hints of Cinderella throughout the book. There was a very Christian theme of reliance on God and His word, as well as forgiveness and grace. I enjoyed the journey of former enemies evolving toward discovering the true person who was there all along! I received an ARC copy and this is my review.
I did enjoy this book and there were definitely points of the plot that had me curious about what would happen next. But I did have a hard time suspending disbelief while reading and found myself questioning some choices a lot. As an overall is a satisfying story.
I read an advanced reader copy of this and really enjoyed it. The way Ruegg takes us through a redemption arc, a murder mystery, and really a rags to riches story is masterful. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to more from this author.
I liked the dual perspectives between Mira and Nicholas. There is plenty of history between the two of them, hints of which are shown throughout the book.
Another sweet little story in this collection that centers around another one of the kingdoms.
