I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book for free and this is my honest review.

Great start to the book series, which ends with a cliffhanger and leaves you wanting more. Maggie was the perfect wife to her husband, David. It is David’s accident that brings a secret to light that Maggie now questions herself as to how she could have missed it or even if she did miss it. She questions if she knew it all along but now doesn’t know if she can continue as “normal” as David now asks her to do. I like that we are truly getting the background to what leads Maggie to The Music Shop.

If you read the book blurb about The Music Shop Book 1, you need to reset your expectations. This is a cliffhanger. And I imagine each book in the series will be a cliffhanger as well. There is nothing at all about the music shop here. I assume that will be coming in book two... This is the story of Maggie, marrried to rich, entitled, controlling David Donovan. Maggie has learned to be small, to always look perfect, to always be perfect, to always acquiesce to David. She has learned to accept that David will always correct her and disguise it as guidance; always make her feel she must "apologize, justify, smooth over every rough edge" so David won't be upset; always make Maggie feel she must explain herself or apologize for things that aren't really her fault; and David will always reframing every situation so it will never be his fault or responsibility. Maggie has accepted this because she feels it is the price she must pay to over come her inferiority (the entire house she grew up in would fit in her current bedroom suite with room to spare) and "belong" in this world of "old money." Maggie is at home, waiting for David, knowing that if they are late to the function they are to attend, it will somehow be her fault. David is driving, with his mistress in the car, when he briefly takes his eyes off the road to look at her, and gets into an accident. When Maggie calls his cell, a stranger picks up, tells her there was an accident and the ambulance went to St Anne's hospital. When Maggie arrives at St Anne's, she's told that David can only have one visitor at a time and "Mrs. Donovan" is already in the room with him, which is how Maggie learns of David's infidelity. This is the story of Maggie coming to terms with the life she has lived for the past twenty-five years. When the storyline in book one ends, Maggie is just starting to realize she needs to leave. And the story will be continued in book two. This is a is very well written story and very introspective on Maggie's part. And regardless of how well it is done, I feel completely deceived that this short novella is not an encapsuIated story. There was absolutely no upfront notice that this series is, in fact, a cliffhanging serial series, which is misleading, at best. Unless you are ready to purchase all six books in this series, you might want to do a rethink, or wait until all are published in a bundle. I would rate the writing on this at 5 stars, it is that well written. I would rate it zero stars for not being upfront about it being a cliffhanging serial.

This contemporary sweet, small-town women's fiction slow-burning second chance later-in-life romance is page-turning with exceptional world-building in the Gulf town of Harmony Bay, a small town in a charming coastal community, where the sunrises and sunsets are magnificent and majestically painted across the sky in vibran hues, and characters who are a female heroine who is divorced and a male hero who offers friendship without conditions, who are both captivating, and realistic. Their journey is enthralling with the music shop, an inspired romance where later-in-life self-discovery, second chances, finding love in a charming coastal community, starting over, sisters, chaos/drama, heartfelt emotions/emotional depth, action, adventure, and more. I recommend reading this book by an extraordinary author who knows how to captivate her readers' hearts and attention with the music shop and contemporary sweet, small-town women's fiction slow-burning second chance later-in-life romance that is sure to transport readers into a world that is wildly emotional, intriguing, and unforgettable.

Reviewed at Happily Ever After Romance

The Music Shop is the first title in the Harmony Bay series. This series takes us along Maggie’s journey (this first title), where she is right now, through her discovery of who she will eventually become by the journey’s end (in book #7). Each book ends on a cliffhanger, taking us directly into the next on this continuing journey for Maggie.

Maggie has made herself into the “perfect wife”, making herself extremely small as her husband’s demands and personality have shaped who she’s become over the years together. Life as she’s known it is about to be upended by her perpetually perfect husband being late (something that never happens), and reality hitting her hard with the discovery of another woman in her husband’s hospital room, in his life for a while now. Yet David doesn’t apologize, doesn’t make promises of future faithfulness… he simply continues on as usual, his demands and his personality not changing one bit. (To say that I despised David is an understatement.) Maggie is beginning to see how she’s wasted her life on this man who has practically made her true self disappear. They have a college-aged daughter, whom Maggie is afraid has been set on the same path as her mother. Maggie will step away from the life she knew to take refuge in the small community of Harmony Bay, in a shop where her love of music is remembered, among people who see her for herself and not for what they can make her into. She has a decision to be made… and rediscovering herself is her first step.

The Music Shop is well-written, insightful, and emotional. It’s very easy to feel Maggie’s world crumble around her, and her fears and determination as she takes the time away from her marriage to find out who she truly is. I enjoyed myself, even if there was a cliffhanging ending that flows into the next book… I’m not a fan of cliffhangers. I’m not sure if I’ll continue with all seven titles; perhaps, at some point, but I just can’t commit to that right now. If you enjoy a self-discovery journey and women’s romantic fiction in an ongoing series, you’d enjoy starting Maggie’s journey.

This Isn’t the sweet story the blurb or title set readers up to expect. The narrative is unfinished, part of a series. In this segment Maggie doesn’t punch David, ask the questions she is swallowing, reclaim anything, or connect with her daughter. She is slowly trying to gain enough courage so she can leave her relationship tomorrow. While this is realistic progression from coercion and years of inferiority sentiments, it is not an enjoyable escapism read even if it is setting the stage for better options in the future. My rating would likely go up if the story was presented as a whole, but that isn’t the case.
Maggie Donovan’s carefully curated life stutters when she walks into the hospital in a blue evening gown and is told David’s wife was in the car crash with him. Abigail, heiress, childhood friend, and affair partner, leaves when Maggie walks in. Twenty-five years Maggie has spent as his perfect wife despite never feeling like she belonged and now she must confront reality. Their daughter Tiffany books a flight home from college after a night of unanswered calls and David doesn’t even apologize when he awakens the following day. At home David says that they should move on and not make waves. However, Maggie slowly realizes the years of guidance and demands were control rather than love. She hears echoes of her own life when Tiffany describes her boyfriend.

This novella is a thoughtful women’s fiction novel that explores marriage, identity, and the courage to start again.

The story centres on Maggie Donovan, whose ordered life unravels after a car accident exposes her husband’s long-hidden affair.

The plot unfolds, focusing more on emotional realisation than dramatic action.

This approach works well because the author builds tension through Maggie’s internal reflections and observations.

Maggie is a sympathetic protagonist, and her gradual awakening to the truth about her marriage feels believable and grounded.

One of the book’s strengths is its writing style. The prose is clean, clear, and easy to read while still conveying depth of feeling.

Scenes such as Maggie discovering Abigail at David’s hospital bedside are especially effective and memorable.

Some sections rely on introspection, which may feel slow to readers who prefer more external action. A few scenes could benefit from sharper dialogue or tighter editing.

Overall, the novel offers an interesting portrait of a woman reclaiming her sense of self after years of compromise.

Readers who enjoy reflective women’s fiction about second chances and personal growth will find this story engaging and satisfying.

This is a clean book. It is part of a series of 6 books and ends with a cliffhanger. To get all of the story, you will need to read all 6 books. This is the start of the series. TW – Deals with infidelity.

Maggie and David have been married a long time and have an adult daughter in college. Maggie has always had to be the perfect wife and defers to David and what he wants. She is at home waiting for him so they can attend an event. However, he is late, which he never is. He has been in an accident with another woman as his passenger. He won’t admit to anything or say he’s sorry. He just continues to criticize her as she tries to help him. When did she start feeling like she was less than? Is this all there is to life?

Maggie is definitely struggling in her marriage. She is figuring he’s had an affair but he won’t discuss it with her. The author gives you the feels that you just want to punch David and get answers. You feel for Maggie and hope she realizes she is worth more. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book to see if she starts believing in herself to leave him.

I received an ARC from the author and am leaving an honest review.

Having read the Hearts of Palm Shores series, I knew Kel Summers could create engaging stories, but I also remembered how each of those books ended with cliffhangers, which isn’t my favorite style. That said, I still wanted to give The Music Shop a try, and I’m glad I did.

This book is the start of a new series, and it focuses on Maggie Donovan, a woman whose carefully constructed life begins to unravel after a shocking event. What I appreciated here was how the story leaned into emotional honesty rather than dramatic twists. Maggie’s journey felt grounded and believable, her struggles as she started questioning the choices she had made and the life she had been living.

Kel Summers has a way of writing that makes you feel like you’re right there with the characters.

While I still wish the book didn’t end on a cliffhanger (because I prefer closure in each installment), I can’t deny that it left me curious to see where Maggie’s story goes next. I’ll likely continue with the series, even knowing I’ll have to wait for the full arc to play out.

Maggie Donovan has been the perfect wife for over 20 years until her husband is injured in a car accident along with a female passenger. As her husband comes home expecting everything to be normal she realizes that the perfect marriage she had, isn’t perfect at all. Their college aged daughter arrives home to check on her father leaving her controlling boyfriend back on campus. Maggie realizes that the years of being the “perfect wife” has led her daughter to believe that control and subservient behavior in a marriage is normal. She decides to leave her marriage as soon as er daughter goes back to college.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I’m looking forward to reading the remainder of the series and seeing how Maggie (and her daughter) become stronger and more confident women.

Sigh. I liked this book, but did not go into it knowing it was a serial. When I realized 3/4 of the way through the book that it was ending soon, I was beyond surprised. I was enjoying the build up of the story between Maggie and her husband and the slow realization she has after the accident that her life was essentially being controlled by her husband. This was very well done and I liked being there with Maggie as she was slowly realizing this.
I was not happy that it's called "The Music Shop" and there was no indication that it was a serial. I've read many books that are a series so I was assuming that book 2 was maybe a side character's story or something, not a continuation. I agree with a previous reviewer, unless you plan on buying all six books (which may be wonderful), you may want to take a hard pass on this one.

A very emotional reading where pain is carefully hidden and compliance is outwardly expressed. Maggie’s been living in a carefully structured bubble that David her husband of over twenty years has created. Image over feelings is what he calls a « normal » life…until the unexpected happens and all is revealed. David’s deceitful behaviour, the lies and the non remorse or apologies from him leaves Maggie in turmoil. She’s deserves ALOT better and she’s finally acknowledging herself that she needs to get away from her very controlling husband and rediscover who she really is and want. I was captured with this story from the very first page and read it in one setting. A real page turner and looking forward to reading Book 2 as this one book ends with a cliffhanger.

For twenty-five years, Maggie lived a "carefully curated" life, striving to be the perfect wife and mother. She resided in a world where she felt she never quite belonged, sacrificing her own identity to maintain a polished image and a controlled marriage. Maggie’s life fractures when she is in a hospital hallway following an accident involving her husband, David. Maggie escapes to the quiet Gulf Coast town of Harmony Bay, marking the first real decision she has made for herself in decades. Her journey toward self-discovery is centered around a small-town music shop where she meets: Nora Hale and Andrew Hale. The story follows Maggie as she reconnects with music and the abandoned parts of her soul.

Let me start by saying I am not a fan of cliff hangers that force you to buy the next book to continue the story. Having said that, this is an awesome prequel to what I assume will be Maggie working or something at the music shop. David thinks the world revolves around him and he is God's gift to women. Maggie has fit into this marriage for years, but a car accident makes her face the truth. And the truth of children learn what they live as she sees her daughter heading for the same kind of guy. It's a good start, I just wish it didn't end with the cliff hanger and the Music Shop came into play.

The Music Shop, Book 1 by Kel Summers really is a rollercoaster of emotions. Maggie’s world shatters with that phone call about her husband’s accident, only to discover his girlfriend at the hospital. That moment of betrayal sets the tone—raw, painful, and decisive. Maggie’s quiet strength in choosing to wait until her daughter returns to school before ending the marriage shows resilience and resolve.

It’s a gripping start to the series, blending heartbreak with empowerment, and promises more emotional twists ahead.

Harmony Bay book 1
ARC review
Antecdotal thoughts while reading
David - type A personality with multiple women he is stringing along??? Maggie and Abigail??
Maggie - groomed to be type A, came from humble beginnings but is living quite the lifestyle now
David, what are you doing?? Can't you finish with one before you get the next one?
Way too loyal
David, everyone deserves to be worthy of knowing, to be somebody not just "the help".
🚗 💥🏨
Politeness is free David. You should try it sometime.
Come on Maggie, you can do it. Stand up for yourself. Think of Tiffany.

This book really knows how to get you hooked on series in a short amount of time. It’s a really quick read that leaves you wanting to immediately jump into the next book. And in such a short book it takes a big topic - how love and control don’t always look so different from each other. Not what I was expecting. Maggie is so strong and makes tough choices. Now I just need the next book to know what happens as a result of those choices. This story will pull at your heartstrings. And leaves you needing to know where things go for Maggie from here.

When Maggie’s husband is in an accident while driving with his girlfriend, Maggie begins to question her entire marriage and the emotional neglect and abuse that she has endured from him for the past 25 years. She worries that her college aged daughter has witnessed this behavior and normalized it as acceptable behavior in a romantic relationship. Should she leave her husband and disrupt all of their lives? Or should she strike out on her own and be an example for her daughter? I’m thinking and hoping book two will be the latter decision!

This was an absolutely wonderful read. Maggie is basically nothing more than a doormat for a husband that gaslights and steps out. For twenty five years she’s done everything for this man. All while raising their daughter, who is twenty and in college. After a car accident, she realizes that it’s time for her to go. Especially when she sees that her daughter has learned to basically be a doormat herself. I loved the growth Maggie found in this story. Seeing her move on and move forward was wonderful. I can’t wait for the next one.

This book is a quick read and sets the stage for the rest of the series. Maggie’s world has cracked and she’s started to see things for what they are - how caring and control can look the same. And she is seeing how this is affecting her daughter. In this story, a decision has been made, but no actions have been taken.

This book gives you a taste of what the rest of the series will bring and will have you wanting to finish the story.

She is a perfect wife to arrived to David who is a real piece of work. She’s waiting on him to arrive to pick her up for an event and when the doesn’t arrive a stranger answers his phone and relays to her that he had been taken to the hospital due to an accident. She rushes to the hospital only to find a woman sitting by his bed. What a way to,find out that your husband has been unfaithful this story is very emotional. The Music Shop, Book 1, is the beginning of the Harmony Bay series which introduces Maggie whose husband, David, is involved in a car accident with a female passenger. The accident is a revelation to Maggie as she starts looking over her married life with David and realizes how controlling he has been and how it has affected not only her but their college age daughter, Tiffany. This book is an exceptional read but also very emotional. It is a later in life saga of a woman who is beginning a personal journey of self-discovery. It ends with a cliffhanger and I am really eager to read the second book in this series.

"Nothing had changed. Yet everything had changed."

This book, the beginning of a series, is about the beginning of the end of a marriage. After her husband of many years is in an accident with his paramour, Maggie comes to grips with the changes this brings to her controlling husband... you really either want it over for her or are abhorred with how he is brushing it off.

This book hit very close to home for me and I hope she leaves the scum. Highly Recommended 5/5

Difficult choices!

Maggie’s world is shattered when her husband, David, had a car accident. The anxiety, the tension builds as Maggie reflects on what has happened to her perfectly ordered life. This is a great first book in what will be a fantastic series. I highly recommend this book and author.

Can I? Will I?

I really don't care for having to wait for the next chapter in a book, BEC AUSE
IM SO CAPTURED as Maggie appeared to be. It is like I just have to know if Maggie will come out of a spell that she inadvertently had captured her daughter into the same web
Will she? Can she?

Is a sweet small town, second chance later in life romance.
Is Maggie going to continue to accept things the way they are? Is Maggie going to let David to continue to control her life? Is Maggie going to open up to Tiffany before it's too late? These and other questions will be answered in books 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6.

The Music Shop poses an important question: How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice for the person you love?

Maggie never imagined she’d receive the call that would change everything. Her husband has been in a car accident — and he wasn’t alone. A woman he knew was in the car with him, raising painful questions Maggie isn’t sure she wants the answers to. When she visits him in the hospital, his coldness and indifference cut deeper than the accident itself. Despite the hurt and confusion, Maggie is determined to help him transition back home and recover, even as her own world feels unsteady beneath her feet.

Unsure of what to believe and unsure of how to move forward, Maggie is forced to confront the truth about her marriage, her heart, and her own strength. Through her journey, she discovers that sometimes following your heart — even when it aches — is the only way to find clarity.

This book was short but packed with emotion and depth. Anyone who has ever experienced manipulation from someone they love — someone they should have been able to trust — will find pieces of themselves in Maggie’s story. A wonderful and heartfelt read that leaves you wanting more.

Wow! What an amazing start to a this new series! It's relatable, interesting and emotional, I was hooked from page one. Wonderful, authentic characters that have depth and that you will easily fall in love with. Well, not David... A beautifully written story that is going to be an entertaining journey. The wait for the next book has already been too long.
