Sacarred by Marie Long
The Anderson Brothers book 1. New adult contemporary romance.
Bars, nightclubs, tshirts with logos and on-night hookups. Angsty male voice written in present tense. Crude. Lots of references to T&A.
Narrated by Levar Ross who had a rough, flat dialog. Mid East coast. Not really pleasant to listen to but definitely representative of the male characters.
Neither new adult nor male 20ish perspective are in my line of preferences.
I read this as part of a reading challenge. I doubt I would read the author again if it fits these two categories.

So at one point in this book, the hero gets a number from a woman he met in a club and gives it to his roommate as an apology of sorts. exSQUEEEEEEZE ME?!!!
Oh, what was he apologizing for? Well, his roommate asked him to go pick up a box of condoms for a threesome he was about to participate in. Roommate couldn't get them himself because he can't leave the women "unattended", his license is revoked...blah blah dumb dumb "I kept forgetting all week to go to the store after work, and now I have these two anxious chicks here, and … Damn! I need to introduce you to Melanie. She’s got amazing legs!”
Not a conversation anyone would EVER have. Ever.
So he doesn't get there in time to, I don't know, personally wrap up this manchild's junk and roommate fucking POUTS and so the hero gifts a fucking NUMBER, like it's something you can just pass around to be nice to your horny friends. And when he delivers said number to his roommate the roommate says this:
“You said she’s got nice tits? What’re her measurements?” Chris’s eyes widen with intrigue.
“Uh … I dunno. Forty inches, maybe?” I throw some random number out there. I’m definitely not a boob connoisseur.
He looks thoughtful for a moment, then narrows his eyes. “Chest or band?”
“What?”
“Chest, then.” He does some counting on his fingers. “The way you make it sound, she’s pretty big, so I’m thinking maybe around a thirty-five band.” His eyes suddenly go wide. Dude! You realize that’s probably a double-D cup?”
I blink. Several times. Did he just calculate her bra size in his head? It amazes me that Chris practically has this down to a science.
“Are they real?”
I shrug. “Never said they were real. I honestly have no idea. Guess you’ll have to find that part out yourself, now won’t you?”
“Damn right, I will!” He springs up from the couch and marches to his room, napkin in hand.
See: Not a conversation anyone would ever have, etc.
She scribbles her number down on an unused napkin, then her name beneath it— Adrienne. She has nice handwriting. Might actually be a smart girl under that painted-on dress. <--Nope
I take the paper, which carries a hint of her alluring pear scent. Her name and phone number are written on it. Her handwriting is gorgeous.<----double nope
How to write male POV:
1. Remind the reader the dude has a dick in case they forget
2. I think I read somewhere that men are visual so put a pair of bouncing boobs in every scene
3. Did you mention their dick yet? Mention the dick. Make it hard after seeing a pair of bouncing boobs because dudes are visual
4. Give the hero a best friend who sleeps around even more than he does
5. Drop a bunch of f bombs
6. Pour a shit ton of misogyny on that mess

I love discovering new authors... And when they offer a unique story that hasn't been done over and over again? That's even better!
Scarred is so different from any new adult romance that I've read before. Dominick wasn't a manwhore frat boy, Denise wasn't a slutty heroine with a tragic past, there were no jealous ex-girlfriends, or stupid misunderstandings... Basically this was a new adult romance without all the overdone cliche's. But what really makes this one of a kind was the fact that it was told entirely from the heroes POV.
Dominick has a tragic past, and although he still has nightmares and flashbacks, he doesn't let it define him. He doesn't want a bunch of meaningless one night stands or drunken hookups, he wants something real... And as soon as he meets Denise he knows that she's his something real.
Unfortunately for Dominick, Denise's ex comes back into the picture and puts his relationship with her on hold. At first I was mad that Denise went back to her ex so quickly without even giving Dom a chance but at the same time that's probably what most people would do if their first love showed back up in their life.
Without giving too much of the story away, I'll just say that something went down with Denise and her ex, William, and Dom was there to save the day. I loved watching their friendship and eventual relationship build from there. While they each had their own demons to work through at that point, you could feel their love for each other helping them heal.
Overall this was a great read and I can't wait to check out Scratched, the next book in the series, when it comes out.

At this point in my New Adult Project I'm ready to weep of joy whenever I come across a NA story with a diverse set of characters. Heck, give me a story where our two main characters aren't both white kids and I'll be happy. Scarred gave me the joy of having a diverse set of characters. I'd give five stars to that alone, honestly. I want to give this book props for bringing that to the table in this genre.
That said, Scarred, while overall a decent story, lacked in other areas. Given, this is not your typical white-kids-with-tragic-past-and-oh-so-sorry-lives. It's an actual story of what it's like to be a new adult. Struggling with finances, keeping up with school, living on your own. All that. To be honest, that too was a like a fresh breath. So why only 2.5 stars, you ask? Well, first of all, this book is slow. The first half of the book is basically our hero Dominick moping around about not getting the girl he likes. The problem is not the moping hero rather how it was all presented. Dominick more or less falls for this woman, Denise, the second he meets her. If any, his obsession with her after meeting her once or twice is almost stalkerish. Add that up with that he barely knows her, and I couldn't quite buy his interest in her. All that together made the first half of his moping around after her a boring read.
So, the story moves along slowly and the development of Dominick and Denise's relationship didn't draw me in as much as it should. However, Scarred doesn't follow the standard NA formula. It has some of the clichés, but it seems to be inevitable in this genre, and those used in this one are pretty minor. I liked the author's twist on some themes and I liked Denise's character.
But we still have a problem. And it starts with Denise's character. When she's introduced, she's described as different. Different how, you ask?
Yeah... She's different because she doesn't dress like other girls. She covers her "assets". This didn't sit well with me. I don't like people judging a woman by what she wears. If this woman wanted to advertise her "assets", than it's her right to do so. And even if she wore those clothes, maybe she wasn't "advertising" them. Maybe they were just what she thought looked good. Still, this wasn't my only problem.
Urgh. Just. Urgh. Diamond in the rough? Seriously? Like being a woman and a virgin means you're worth more than other women? Give me a break. What century is this?
Did I like Scarred? To an extent. I liked some of the themes and how they were handled, but my main issues with it were the pacing and how some things were presented.

I got an Arc in exchange of an honest review so here it is !
This is the first book Marie Long published and I have to say this is a really good first novel. It's well written with moving and realistic characters. I think this is the kind of romance that is both deep and tender. I loved Dominick and I really enjoyed reading from his POV. He and Denise were really endearing and well, perfect for each other !
The author promised a great book boyfriend and here we have it ! Dominick was not just scarred, broken and afraid. No, he was also funny, smart, so thoughtful and caring. The way he thought and acted were trueful. You can look for a guy like this but I'm pretty sure he is already taken or hiding somewhere. I felt like he was some rare treasure you would only find in an old shop where you wouldn't have looked. But iof you're like Denise, you'll want to keep him close. She realized quickly enough he was everything she always hoped for. She seemed so nice and fun, cute and reliable. You will want her as your best friend !
Again, the two of them were meant to be together. Even darkness couldn't keep them apart or make one of them run away. Dominick' secrets were terrible and it made my heart hurt. So I'm beyond happy he finally got what he deserved so much. Now I can picture him being happy for the rest of his life. His demons are fading away like snow under the warm and shining sun.
The second characters were great too, I loved Kevin and I can't wait to read more about him. Also, there were intense moments that made the read lively. And what about the hotness of this true love? Denise and Dominick were so touching. I often smile and like me, I'm sure you will feel something deep inside.
So as you can see, I really enjoyed this novel ! Thank you to Marie Long for this beautiful and lovely happy ending ! I'm a big fan of this kind of love story. There is everything a book lover like me can appreciate.
I highly recommand you to read this book. This is the first novel of The Anderson Brothers series and I will gladly read the sequel.

Dominick is a good guy. He is tired of "playing the field". He knows he's ready for a real relationship. Then he meets Denise. Instantly Dominick knows she is the woman for him. Just as their relationship is blossoming Denise's ex comes around to try and get him back.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. As much as I love the stories with the bad boy and the naive, virgin girl, I really liked reading a story about two grown, mature adults. It was extremely refreshing. It's the debut novel of Marie Long and it's beautifully written. I'm excited to read more by her. A MUST read!

I had the impression that this was an interracial romance. However after getting into reading it . I discovered it was not. I didn't stop reading it though. I can't tell you how long it's been. Since I've read an non interracial romance lol. Anyway I digress lol... Romance didn't start until about 40% left into the book. However I have no complaints. It was a good read, and it was free. It kept my interest. The lead and his love interest were dealing with similar issues. (Don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't read this book yet.) So if you look for something that's in the young adult genre, but doesn't read like one. Then give this book a try.

First, I would like to say there was a certain word used that sort made me cringe, but was not used in excess or in any sexual situation, just a few times in the thoughts of the male.
That said, I also want to commend this author, she wrote a hero I could root for and care about, this is the kind of male character we need to see in more romance books. though I am sure he could get any girl he wants just to hook up or whatever, he wanted something more meaningful and meaningless one night stand was not going to do it for him. This character is the true meaning of a grown ass man! I hated what he went through at the hands of his father.
The female character was quite a heroine, she is one I respected and admired.The two of them together are truly amazing, I could feel how much they felt for each other.
The sex scenes were, those two together were hot without it being explicit or smutty. They made love, They did not just F**k. T o me there is a difference. I was so happy the hero got his happiness after a life of hellish pain.
Alot of people will have a problem with me saying this, but I speak my mind, my opinion, but books like this separates the difference between a man and a boy playing as a man who tries to turn sex into love, thinking sex is love like a uncontrolled hormonal teenager. It is so much better when the couple learns about each other on a deeper emotional and mental so when they do make love we know it id just not physical.

Sweet and sexy at the same time. Scarred definitely went beyond my expectations. I've already said before that I'm quite picky when it comes to New Adult novels, but this book is among the few ones that I liked.
First, I liked the characters. Both Dominick and Denise are just genuinely nice people. Although Dominick has a terrible past, it doesn't make him a nasty, angry bad boy so common in the NA genre. Denise is a smart girl. She's nice enough but smart not to immediately trust strangers, even strangers as hot and chivalrous as Dominick. And speaking of chivalry, I liked the fact that their first meeting happens in a relaxed but meaningful manner with Dominick coming to Denise's aid during a problematic situation. It only goes to show that chivalry definitely isn't dead.
So the cover apparently suggests that Scarred is an interracial romance. However, I didn't read anything that says the characters are interracial. Correct me if I'm wrong, guys. Maybe I just totally missed that part or something. But yeah, I couldn't really picture the characters' appearances in my head. I just relied on the cover models to visualize Dominick and Denise. So I think the characterization is somewhat lacking. And here I am waiting for diverse characters.
But the story's so good! I liked that they started out as friends, even though Dominick was immediately attracted to Denise from the time they met. The build-up of romance between the two was slow, but I'm not complaining. I'd prefer that over insta-love anytime. And I admire Dominick's respect for Denise. He was rejected, but he took it gracefully and remained her friend. Nice guys for the win! The conflict (aka William) is not really something to fuss about, but enough to give the characters the obstacle they needed to overcome to be together. Although, Dominick and William's last confrontation was a bit short and anti-climactic, in my opinion. I was like,
All in all, Scarred is a well-written and enjoyable New Adult read. Aside from the few peeves mentioned above, I really liked reading this book. It's romantic and sweet and there are also bits of humor in there. Dominick has some serious issues, but he shows that the past can be overcome and he certainly did it.

So I think the characterization is somewhat lacking. And here I am waiting for diverse characters.
But the story's so good! I liked that they started out as friends, even though Dominick was immediately attracted to Denise from the time they met. The build-up of romance between the two was slow, but I'm not complaining. I'd prefer that over insta-love anytime. And I admire Dominick's respect for Denise. He was rejected, but he took it gracefully and remained her friend. Nice guys for the win! The conflict (aka William) is not really something to fuss about, but enough to give the characters the obstacle they needed to overcome to be together. Although, Dominick and William's last confrontation was a bit short and anti-climactic, in my opinion. I was like,
All in all, Scarred is a well-written and enjoyable New Adult read. Aside from the few peeves mentioned above, I really liked reading this book. It's romantic and sweet and there are also bits of humor in there. Dominick has some serious issues, but he shows that the past can be overcome and he certainly did it.

When I heard about the book, I was excited because I loved the synopsis but also a bit uncertain if I would like the book or not. This book was unlike any other new adult novel that I have read. There is romance, drama, emotional play and a bit of suspense.
The cover is good but I could not visualize Denise and Dom being like the actors on the cover. The blurb is interesting and caught my attention making me want to read the book to know more!
Marie's writing style is simple and typical of the area she focuses on in her book. The style of speaking was new to me since I am from another country but it was fun to read and had me engrossed soon in the book. The plot has been well conceived and executed and the author had me totally engaged all throughout the story.
The characterization is expertly done and I loved Dom with his gentleman ways. Dom's traumatic past and its effect on his present is admirably described and sometimes had me scared when the dialogues from the past ran in his mind and he whispered them. You will have to read the book to know more about this. He is gentle, caring and considerate. When he falls for Denise, I fell in love with him! His past is still left unresolved which I think will be handled in the subsequent books and has me eager to know more.
Denise is portrayed as a sweet, intelligent and independent girl.Dom and Denise's interactions with each other had me me laughing, sighing like a love struck teenager and then rooting for a happily-ever-after for them. She also has a past which is beautifully brought to life by the author and had me sitting on the edge of my seat to see what happened next!
Dom's brother and his roommate, his mother and Uncle also play an important role and do an admirable job of taking the story forward. I felt connected with all the characters in the book and could visualize them as real people with real problems.
The emotional play, the pain Dom has suffered and the budding romance between him and Denise along with the drama going on in the lives of some of the supporting characters made this book multi-dimensional and entertained me thoroughly.
All in all, Scarred is a promising debut from Marie Long and definitely recommended to all lovers of new adult romance. 4.5 out of 5 to it from me. Go checkout and grab the book. I am so eager to read the subsequent books in the series to know what happens next that I cant wait. Marie is a talented new author and definitely someone to lookout for. First, I want to say that I really like the book cover. It’s amazing. Seeing the cover will make you think of what the book is about. I initially thought, Denise will be like a motorcycle chick, hot and deadly—literally ‘deadly’. Heavens, was I wrong.
Scarred is about 22 year old Dominick who is still being shadowed by his past. He is a gentleman but a scared one. One faithful day, he met Denise while on his way of buying his best friend condoms. I know right, it’s hilarious. His best friend, Chris, is a very funny guy. Only if he doesn’t sleep around a dozen times a day, I would have a crush on him.
The book is narrated on Dom’s point of view, which I find great because it is good to know what runs inside a guy’s mind. But I expected to see more of action from Denise. I mean, I thought she will be like the Alpha woman in the story. Boy, I am really disappointed. I was really looking forward on it.
I’m not into insta-love so I really do not hundred percent buy how their feelings start towards each other. But I must say, I enjoyed reading their progression.
I can’t get enough with the characters, though. They are all unexpectedly fun.

This was a refreshing story in the fact that Dominick is a twenty one year old college student that is looking for a meaningful relationship and not a one night stand. He works hard in college and at his job. He has demons from his past that he is also dealing with. Denise is your average college girl who does not have a tragic past. She and Dominick don't even have an instant connection. They have to work on their relationship. I don't want to give away the story so I will say this is a refreshing story that does not follow a cliche. Dominick and Denise are characters you will be able to feel like they are your friends. I loved that they did not fall in instant love. I will be looking for more books by Marie Long.

4.50 stars. This is a well written lovely story of two people who suffered similar injuries. Denise Ramsey and Dominick "Dom" Anderson attend the same college; but do not meet until Denise has car trouble, Dom who works as an auto mechanic offers to do the repairs. They have an immediate attraction, go on a date, Dom sparks Denise's interest in motorcycles since that is his means of transportation. Her former beau reenters her life, Dom saves her and their romance and love grow throughout the story. It is a good read with well developed characters and a storyline that is interesting and that flows well.

I was given this book to read for an honest review. Now having said that let me say I am so glad for the opportunity
to read this book. Marie Long has written a book that was a pleasure to read. I found myself unable to put it down.
I fell in love with Dominick and Denise. I hope there will be more books continuing their story and the story of the

They should be talked about though, because these evil things that we do to each other are a part of our world. They shouldn't be relegated to the darkness and shadows. 3.5 stars. I haven’t read many male POV books, and that had me questioning if that was why I didn’t find this book to my taste. That may have something to do with it as it is difficult to relate to a male and their experiences in the dating world in their late teens/early 20s. However, I think it was more that everything in this book was an extreme that really bothered me. The core story I could get behind and I even found myself smiling when the main characters finally get on the same page. But... he was a saint and “all girls only wanted sex”, the girl was an absolute angel before he knew her from Eve, he sets his overly promiscuous friend up with someone who gave her number to him at a club and his roommate is now in a monogamous relationship, the girl’s ex that showed back up was a straight up asshole before he knew him from Adam, and the list keeps going on. There was a lot of objectifying females, but seriously, this happens in female POV books as well when the male character has washboard abs, nice but, great biceps.... etc. Males are going to comment on boobs and butt and probably be crass about it when they are in their own heads or talking with their buddies.
I *might* try something else by the author, but this book wasn’t my cup of tea. There was a good story underneath all of the extremes and discussion of girl’s measurements.

The only reason this book wasn't a 5 stars was because I just wasn't completely in love with it , and it's not necessarily my favorite . I didn't like a little bit of insta love on the mans part but I got over that quick . I also didn't like Dom in the beginning, but I am so HAPPY that I continued on ! This was AMAZING so much , that you need it in your life NOW!
I loved this book so much ! I adored the writing of marie long , and she can really write characters that have serious depth . I didn't like Dom in the beginning but he sure as hell grew on me and towards half way I really liked him and his attitude and how he treated the other sex.
To be honest , I didn't expect a guy to go through the shit he did and still be so sweet and not letting his demons take over his state of mind wAs a good trait to have . I completely understand his relationship with his mother but I hope in the next book , he at least talks with her .
Denise is such a sweet heart and she deserves a man like Dom. She was very cautious and I wish I had more insight into her mind set but she seemed to be younger than her age really was . I liked that about her, and I loved how she let loose with Dom finally towards the end. I adored how Dom became her light , her guardian angel, the one perfect for her.

I liked aspects of Scarred by Marie Long, but if I'm being honest I didn't love this book. I do wonder if listening to this book on audible skewed my views as I didn't care for the narrator. The back story to Dominik and his brothers was compelling and emotional, but the story being told came off juvenile and flat, in my opinion.

Dominick and his brother were once thriving in life and then one day an incident changed the trajectory of both their lives. Dominick was scarred, yet not totally damaged by the incident. His brother gave up a lucrative chance at a sports career, yet he came a successful recognizable DJ.. Dominick attended the university seeking a degree in engineering. His biker buddies called him genius.. He was a quiet soul hoping to survive his traumatic life after the incident. He mostly kept to himself.. Dominick's roommate was a manwhore.. So when Dominick met Denise the day she had car problems, he knew he had to keep her away from his roomie..... Sadly, Denise was in a relationship with a not so nice guy, and Dominick realized he had to keep an eye out for the lady of his dreams. At mid point in the story it was evident Dominick was smitten and Denise was unsure about her true feelings. The chemistry was evident between them, as the author did a great job with this visual. By the time the story concluded the story felt completed, readers had a clear vision of the story and each characters point of view. The story was a nice easy read..

The storyline is a great concept. I just feel like it was rushed. When overcoming a difficult past I do not expect the characters to get together after one very awkward date. If Dom is slow to love and trust,I don't see him falling that fast for Denise.

The book synopsis didn’t exactly jump out for me. It was just another routine from this genre, but I didn’t want to write off the book for some reason. I’m glad I didn’t. The story line is pretty much conforms to that of the summary, except that “demons” and Dom’s “past” are elaborated (of which I am not going to mention for it will be a major spoiler)
Characterisation: Simple and Neat
The characterisation was simple and neat. Writers normally tend to get carried while writing a story that has a heavy storyline in terms of emotions making their character all complex and dark. Thankfully again, this writer did no such thing. All the characters were in check with their emotions. Chivalrous men are such a turn on. Dom was such a gentleman all throughout in spite of Denise being such a strong character. I felt Denise’s character was a bit rough and could have used much more emphasis.
Storyline: Sturdy and Clean
The story line was simple, clean and had all the right ingredients such as romance, drama and action in the right amount to make sure the reader isn’t bored. In fact, I wanted to finish of the story in one go just to know what Dom’s haunting past was.
Writing and other essentials
The writing was simple and focussed. There was enough proper “good old romance” and there was enough “new age romance” too. A perfect balance between them I’d say. The writer beautifully tied all the loose threads that she initially left hanging. In spite of many pluses in the form of good characterisation and a neat story, the book lacked something for me. I felt the emotions could have been a bit deeper, with the exception of the Frank and Dom thread of the story.
The writer obviously has a potential to create magic, maybe she needs a push.
VERDICT: A good story backed by good characterisation. Just lacks that magic!

One of the best things about being a blogger, is the opportunity to discover so many new and awesome authors. I'm so glad I got the chance to discover Marie Long.
Dominick has a dark and tragic past that he doesn't let define him. Although he still has flashbacks and nightmares, he still doesn't use it as an excuse to be a douche. There are no one and done incidents in his life, as he is on the hunt for a relationship that is meaningful. As soon as Denise comes in his life, he knows she's it. However, Denise has some lingering feelings for her ex, so she tries one more time to make it work. Can Dom show her that they belong together?

I like the ideas behind this book and I like the point of overcoming past obstacles to get to the good/better things in life. I have read others review and agree that some of the tone of this book can be a little off putting. However from a females perspective most guys are misogynistic. And men tend to view virginal women as a golden ticket to some idea of perfection. I did find Dom's character a bit stalker-ish but he himself says he was this way but he also had reason behind his action that turned out to be quite noble. My disappointment comes from how the characters are described or lack thereof. I found myself struggling to figure out what they would look like or true character development. Some of the ideas are there but left me wondering if the reaction or actions were justified. for instance nobody says anything about Dom's altercation at the frat house like it happens everyday. No shock or upset or even anger just blatant acceptance.
Over all I did like the story and I was rooting for them to get together but I was still left with wanting more.

Besides enjoying it, the first thing that struck me about Scarred is that it feels real. Dominick and Denise read like people you know, trying to be good, trying to do the right thing - all while dealing with the overwhelming issues of becoming an adult, including coming to terms with their childhoods. The side characters are real too. They’re not just plot devices or talking heads to further the narrative. Their stories are as complicated and compelling as Dom’s, and his interactions with them are just as heartfelt as his time with Denise.
Scarred is a story about people: some good, some bad, some wild, some lonely and some seeking second chances. It’s easy to understand or relate to all of them in one way or another because Marie captures the essence of who these people are and presents them without apology.
It's also a story about not giving up, on love, and especially on yourself. I’m excited to see where the series goes from here.

I love when a writer gets the story just the way it should.This is a story of an extraordinary man who's looking for love from the right woman and someone to help him to finally release his demons.Dominick is the kind of man you want for your daughter who's fresh out the gate and looking for love.Denise is so just right for Dommick,that are two strong people who want to love.This is story dealing and handling some strong subject matter and the writer does a very good job.There are also some pretty good laugh out loud moments.This is good solid romance about real life and the things that can happen.This is also about true friends and real family even when sometimes it's not about blood.I so look forward to the next installment of this series on some real Alpha Men.

There's this thing that's called talent, and I know that Marie Long is one of the few people who has this real and natural talent to write. I loved reading this story.
It wasn't just a book with hurtfull events and love. It was a real life story. I loved Dom, the abusive family isn't different from the other ones I read, buit I'm sure that if you read this book you'll be convinced that this bok is worth reading it.
I was reading this book just before I was going to travel and this book made sure that I was relaxed. It's a book that'll make you cry but it's a book that'll make you laugh and give you hope. The two leading characters really did have a special connection.
Would I read the next book? Hell yeah, i've got it ready to read it.
