I love this book, and, I am excited to read the next novel in the series!
Like many high school seniors, the title character, Claire is looking forward to graduation and starting college in the fall. When her grandmother unexpectedly dies, everything in Claire's life is turned upside down when she discovers that she has inherited the gift of "true sight." At first, Claire struggles with all of the rapid changes in her life as ghosts seek her out so that they can find closure and pass on to the other side.
The author does a really good job at humanizing both Claire and the spirits that ask her for help. The reader is easily drawn into Claire's world, and viscerally experiences her emotions, as well as the mix of confusion, pain, and other feelings experienced by the ghosts, and their loved ones, as they try to come to grips with their deaths. While there are many supernatural suspense stories out there, I felt this was an area where the author and her creation really excel --- I literally laughed out loud, and cried actual tears right along with Claire and the others in this story.
While this book is clearly the beginning of the series, I liked that the author not only established the characters and left open the door for more stories, I also liked that the novel is complete in and of itself. I really hope the next story in the series is released soon because I want to learn more about Claire, the Voyant family, and whether or not Claire will be able to break free from the dark spirit that claimed her grandmother's life.
I started reading this thriller earlier this morning, and it was such an engrossing tale that I could not put it down until I finished it! If you enjoy supernatural suspense, then you won't want to miss this series!
I enjoyed reading about the ghosts and humans that came in contact with Claire. They have very realistic pasts and it was saddening reading about them. It just shows that the characters in books are very much alive in the real world and vice versa. I felt that the exposure of such lives, even if a short one is very much appreciated and needed. There were so much unheard pleas and cries for help in the world and I think that it was conveyed through this book and help was given to the characters in the book, enabling them to break free and start over or just to pass on. Claire’s responsibility is a really heavy one and I certainly commend her for trying to help those that need her help.
